USA blunt Ghana 3-0 in FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup 2022

ALAJUELA: United States of America (USA) started their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup campaign on a high as the side defeated Ghana 3-0 in the Group D match on Thursday.

The young USA side displayed their domination over Ghana for the majority of the match as the team had significantly better pass accuracy and possession than the latter and hence ran away with a consolidating 3-0 victory.

USA were off to a flying start to their opening match as Michelle Ivory Cooper struck in the 11th minute of the game to hand the side an early lead.

The two sides then remained involved in a hard fight and tested each other’s defences and it seemed that the first half would conclude with the unchanged scoreboard before Alyssa Paola Thompson sneaked through the Ghana defence to enhance USA’s lead to 2-0.

Team USA then had a similar start to the second half as Alysson Marie Sentnor took just six minutes to net the third goal for the side.

Ghana then looked to cut USA’s dominating lead but remained unable to do so as the USA defence did well to bar them from netting the ball.

Following this victory, the USA secured the top position in Group D, while the opening match defeat resulted in Ghana dropping to the bottom.

The second day of the world cup features three more matches including the defending champion Japan starting their campaign as they take on the Netherlands at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto.

The action-filled tournament is being telecasted live on Pakistan’s first HD Sports channel – A Sports and will be simultaneously streamed on the digital platform of ARY Digital Network – ARY ZAP in crystal clear HD quality.

Australia dominate hosts Costa Rica 3-1 in FIFA U20 Women’s WC

SAN JOSE: Young Australian side started their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup campaign in style with a 3-1 win over Costa Rica in the Group A match on the opening day of the event, here on Wednesday.

Sarah Hunter and Bryleeh Henry scored back-to-back goals in the first half to upset the home crowd before Kirsty Fenton’s header in the second half steered Australia to a comfortable win.

The hosts went for a solid start and scored the opening goal in the 19th minute with a superb effort by captain Alexandra Pinell who blasted a free kick from 35 yards into the post.

Australia, however, continued to exert pressure on the Costa Rican defence in search of an equalizer and eventually found the one in the form of a penalty in the 37th minute.

Sarah netted the ball from the penalty spot to level the scores before Henry doubled the lead within two minutes.

The second half witnessed shaky and worn-out efforts by both teams as the young players grew tired.

Australia managed to score their third in the 72nd minute as Kirsty Fenton was able to head the ball into the post from close range after Lowry’s corner was delivered exactly into the hot spot.

Following this victory, Australia secured the top position in Group A, while Costa Rica dropped to the bottom.

Meanwhile, Brazil and Spain placed second and third in the group A standings respectively, after both secured a point each following a draw in the opening day game.

Mexico’s Grace Wisnewski scored the game’s first goal in the 30th minute, while New Zealand retaliated with an equaliser as Anette Vazquez scored a spectacular goal just before halftime.

Mariana strikes late as Colombia sink Germany in FIFA U20 Women’s WC

ALAJUELA: Colombia striker Mariana Munoz struck in the closing minutes of the match to hand her side a thrilling victory over Germany in the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup opener.

The two teams remained indulged in a see-saw battle in the first half of the curtain raiser as their defenders did well to bar the opposing team from making their mark on the scoreboard.

The opening match of the world cup was steering towards a tie before Mariana sneaked through the German defence to hand her team an important lead of 1-0 in the 87th minute that lasted till the final whistle.

German striker Ria Clara Fröhlich, however, had a vital chance to cut Colombia’s lead in the extra time but she failed to dodge the latter’s goalkeeper, who did well to deflect the ball away from the goal post.

Following this victory, Colombia secured the top position in Group B, while the opening match defeat resulted in Germany dropping to the bottom.

A total of four matches will be contested on August 11 including the host Costa Rica starting their U20 Women’s World Cup campaign against Australia.

Nunez saves Liverpool from opening day defeat at Fulham

LONDON: Jurgen Klopp admitted Liverpool deserved no more than a 2-2 draw against newly-promoted Fulham in a pulsating start to their Premier League season on Saturday.

Aleksandar Mitrovic twice put the impressive hosts ahead, but Darwin Nunez came off the bench to make a huge impact on his Premier League debut.

The Uruguayan, who arrived at Anfield in a deal that could rise to 100 million euros ($102 million) from Benfica, flicked home to level at 1-1 and then teed up Mohamed Salah for an equaliser 10 minutes from time.

Liverpool’s season had got off to a flying start by getting the better of Manchester City to win the Community Shield in what was billed as an early showdown between the two title contenders.

However, the Reds were punished for a sluggish performance in the first hour in what could prove a costly concession of two points.

“The best thing about the game was the result,” said Klopp. “We got a point from a really bad game.

“The result was fine, I don’t think we deserved more than that. The performance can be massively improved.”

Mitrovic scored 43 goals in as many games last season as Fulham romped to the Championship title and gave Liverpool an early warning as he stabbed just wide inside the first minute.

Much to Klopp’s frustration on the touchline, the visitors did not wake from their slumber and were finally punished on 32 minutes when Mitrovic outmuscled Trent Alexander-Arnold at the back post to head in Kenny Tete’s cross.

“We have to respect Liverpool but of course do our job and trust ourselves,” said Fulham boss Marco Silva. “We did a great first half, almost perfect the way we controlled and blocked. In the second half, we matched them.”

Liverpool flickered into life before the break as Luis Diaz smashed against the post from a narrow-angle.

However, it was not until the introduction of the towering presence of Nunez that the Champions League finalists began to pose a persistent threat.

Nunez was at fault when Fulham were inches away from doubling their lead when he was caught in possession and the ball was fed to Neeskens Kebano, who drilled off the inside of the post.

At the other end, Liverpool’s new striker quickly made his presence felt as an audacious flick from Salah’s cross was saved by Marek Rodak.

Moments later a replica move did deliver Nunez’s first Premier League goal as he backheeled in from Salah’s low cross 26 minutes from time.

At that point, there appeared only one winner, but Mitrovic showed a surprising fleetness of foot to turn Virgil van Dijk, who clipped the Serbian striker inside the box.

Mitrovic coolly slotted the resulting penalty low past Alisson Becker, but Fulham failed to hold out in the final 18 minutes for a famous win.

Another long ball into the box towards Nunez caused panic in the Fulham defence and the ball eventually fell kindly to Salah to score on the opening weekend of the Premier League for a sixth consecutive season.

Liverpool could even have snatched victory five minutes into stoppage time when Jordan Henderson’s long-range strike came back off the crossbar.

But a point was the least Fulham deserved as they made a strong start in their bid to avoid relegation for a fourth consecutive season when in the top flight.

Injured Mbappe ruled out of PSG season opener

PARIS: Kylian Mbappe will miss Paris Saint-Germain’s first Ligue 1 outing of the new season this weekend against Clermont with an adductor injury, his club said on Friday.

PSG announced that Mbappe had been left out of the squad that would travel to Clermont for Saturday’s game “due to pain in his adductor muscles” and will instead remain behind for treatment.

“A further update will be provided in 72 hours time.”

Mbappe already missed PSG’s 4-0 win over Nantes in the French season-opening Champions Trophy in Tel-Aviv, Israel last weekend due to a suspension carried over from the last campaign.

PSG begin their defence of the Ligue 1 title with a new coach, Christophe Galtier having taken over from the sacked Mauricio Pochettino.

Lionel Messi and Neymar, who both scored against Nantes, are in the squad along with new signings Vitinha, Hugo Ekitike and Nordi Mukiele.

However, there is no place for the Qatar-owned club’s most recent recruit, with Portuguese international midfielder Renato Sanches not featuring in the list of 21 players announced on Friday.

Sanches only arrived on Thursday from Lille for a reported fee of 15 million euros ($15.25m).

Galtier, who led Lille to the Ligue 1 title in 2021, said he was eager for the season to start.

“We do this job to compete and experience all the emotions,” Galtier admitted.

“Training sessions and interviews are one thing, but we live for competition.”

He added: “When PSG go away from home it is often the biggest game of the season for the home team and the stadiums are full.

“We want to start the season in the best possible manner.”

England women beat Germany to end major tournament wait at Euro 2022

LONDON: England won a major women’s tournament for the first time as Chloe Kelly’s extra-time goal secured a 2-1 victory over Germany at a sold-out Wembley on Sunday.

In front of a record crowd of 87,192 for any match in the history of the European Championships, Kelly prodded home a loose ball from close range to end English football’s 56-year wait for a World Cup or Euro victory.

Kelly fought back from an anterior cruciate ligament tear to be fit in time for the tournament and made herself a national hero by being in the right place to pounce when Germany failed to clear a corner in the 110th minute.

The Manchester City winger tore off her shirt in celebration in scenes reminiscent of Brandi Chastain’s famous reaction to scoring the winning penalty at the 1999 World Cup for the USA.

“This is what dreams are made of, as a young girl watching women’s football,” said Kelly, who broke off a post-match interview to join in a chorus of “Sweet Caroline” with the crowd and her teammates.

“Thank you to everyone who played a part in my rehab. I always believed I’d be here, but to be here and score the winner, wow. These girls are amazing.”

England looked set for victory in the 90 minutes when substitute Ella Toone’s sublime chip over Merle Frohms put the hosts in front.

Germany showed remarkable resilience to bounce back as Lina Magull levelled 11 minutes from time.

But for once, England were not to be denied a major tournament success.

Fortune did not favour Germany, who lost captain and top goalscorer Alexandra Popp to a muscle injury in the warm-up.

But England will feel their time for some luck was due as 12 months on from the Three Lions’ defeat on penalties to Italy in the Euro 2020 men’s final, the nation’s women went one better.

England manager Sarina Wiegman has now led the home nation to the title in back-to-back women’s Euros after leading the Netherlands to victory five years ago.

“The game was so tight, there was a little bit of fight in there, but who cares, we won 2-1,” said Wiegman. “We are European champions.”

Under Wiegman, England are unbeaten in 20 games but were pushed to the limit by the eight-time winners despite missing the massive presence of Popp.

The Wolfsburg striker, who missed the entirety of Euro 2013 and 2017 through injury, had scored six goals in five games en route to the final.

Despite losing their major goal threat and facing the intimidating atmosphere of a full Wembley waiting to party, Germany still posed a threat and came close to opening the scoring early in the second half when Magull prodded just wide.

Strength in depth has been one of the key features of England’s success under Wiegman and the Dutch coach turned to Alessia Russo and Toone to turn the tide as they did in the quarter-final win over Spain.

The changes worked to perfection once more as Toone timed her run through the heart of the German defence to latch onto Keira Walsh’s through ball, showing great composure to coolly lift the ball over Frohms.

Lesser sides than the eight-time champions would have been broken, but Germany immediately pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

The excellent Magull smashed a shot off the post and Popp’s replacement Lea Schueller should have converted the rebound rather than rolling the ball into the arms of the grateful Mary Earps.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side were not to be denied, though, and fittingly it was Magull who sent the game to extra-time as the Bayern Munich midfielder slotted Tabea Wassmuth’s cross into the roof of the net.

The German attack was further blunted by Magull’s withdrawal at the end of 90 minutes due to a knock, and both sides felt the pace of a physical encounter in the extra 30 minutes.

England just had enough left in the tank to finally get the job done as Germany failed to deal with the second ball from a corner and Kelly’s telescopic right leg flicked the ball home.

After decades of disappointment, a major tournament trophy has come home for England fans.
