Spain’s Yamal provides update on his availability for Saudi clash

Spain star Lamine Yamal said on Friday that it is “too soon” for him to play a full 90 minutes as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury, ahead of the European champions’ FIFA World Cup 2026 game against Saudi Arabia.

Luis de la Fuente’s men were held to a surprise goalless draw by debutants Cape Verde in their Group H opener and will be hoping to get up and running on Sunday when they face the Saudis.

On Monday, Barcelona winger Yamal made his first appearance since suffering the injury in mid-April, coming on as a 71st-minute substitute against Cape Verde.

“It’s very early, it’s unnecessary,” the 18-year-old told Spanish public broadcaster RTVE about his readiness to play an entire game. “It’s not the time to play a whole match, but I can play whatever minutes the coach wants.”

Coach De la Fuente told Radio Cope on Thursday that Yamal would be able to play “an hour” this weekend in Atlanta.

Yamal could not inspire his teammates in the closing stages against a dogged Cape Verde, but his Barcelona teammate Pau Cubarsi backed him to deliver at the tournament.

“We already know Lamine’s qualities,” Cabarsi said Friday. “Whether he comes on or not, he’ll help us as much as possible, but I think whoever plays in his place will do just as well.”

Spain were the pre-tournament title favourites, but they have not got past the last 16 at a World Cup since lifting the trophy for the first time in 2010.

Ismael Saibari fires fastest World Cup goal as Morocco beat Scotland

Ismael Saibari scored the fastest goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far after just 71 seconds as Morocco beat Scotland 1-0 on Friday to close in on a place in the knockout rounds.

Saibari scored in Morocco’s opening 1-1 draw with Brazil last weekend, and his clinical finish with just over a minute gone settled a hard-fought, physical contest watched by a crowd of 64,146 at the Gillette Stadium near Boston.

The 25-year-old, who was born in Spain and raised in Belgium, is reportedly on the brink of a 55 million-euro ($63m) transfer from Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven to Bayern Munich.

The quality of his strike past goalkeeper Angus Gunn showed why he is attracting such interest, and it was telling that Scotland lacked the same quality in the opposition box, which helps explain why Morocco are ranked fifth in the world, and Scotland 40th.

With four points from two games, Morocco are now primed to advance to the last 32 as they aim to at least match their historic run to the semi-finals in Qatar in 2022.

However, it was a sobering evening for Scotland and their army of fans who have taken over Boston during this World Cup, as their team never really tested Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

The laboured 1-0 win over Haiti in their opening game at the same stadium last weekend, which was their first victory at a World Cup since 1990, gave them a platform to build on and reason to believe they can progress beyond the group stage at a World Cup for the very first time.

Another win here would have secured progress from Group C, but their chances of going further remain up in the air going into their next match against Brazil in Miami next Wednesday.

Morocco, whose captain Achraf Hakimi started hours after it was confirmed he must stand trial in France on rape charges, face Haiti in Atlanta next.

Moroccan coach Mohamed Ouahbi went with an unchanged starting line-up here following the Brazil clash, but opposite number Steve Clarke made three changes.

Clarke sought to reinforce his defence, meaning striker Lawrence Shankland dropped out as defender Kieran Tierney came into the side to make a back five. But that was of little use as Morocco went ahead practically from kick-off.

The assist came from Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz, and Grant Hanley played Saibari onside as the latter latched onto the ball over the top, controlled and rifled high into the net.

Morocco, who defeated Scotland 3-0 when the teams met at the 1998 World Cup, threatened to overrun their opponents every time they got forward but were wasteful, with Bilal El Khannouss squandering a good chance on 36 minutes.

Scotland were as stodgy in attack as they have been for a long time, and it took until first-half stoppage time for them to create anything dangerous.

That was a cross whipped in from the left by skipper Andy Robertson that John McGinn was unable to make anything of, and the opening period ended without Bounou needing to make a save.

Morocco hit the woodwork five minutes into the second half as Saibari met a cutback by El Khannouss and his attempt was deflected onto the bar by Jack Hendry.

Moments later, Gunn made a fine stop to keep out an El Khannouss header from a corner taken by Hakimi, who was regularly booed by the crowd.

Morocco nevertheless seemed content to see the game out and soak up what Scotland could throw at them.

Ryan Christie fired over on 64 minutes after being teed up by Scott McTominay, who hit the side-netting late on, but a Scotland goal proved elusive.

Women’s T20 World Cup: New Zealand edge spirited Ireland in thriller

SOUTHAMPTON: New Zealand survived a spirited Ireland chase to claim a tense four-run victory and secure their first win of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at the Rose Bowl.

Ireland fell short of 141-run target, ending on 136-4 despite half-centuries from captain Gaby Lewis and Orla Prendergast.

The pair forged a crucial stand after a steady start and kept their side in the hunt. Prendergast struck 59 from 53 balls, including five fours and a six, while Lewis made 58 from 53 deliveries with six boundaries.

The turning moment of the game was Melie Kerr’s double wicket in the 18th over, in which she removed well-set Prendergast and Rebecca Stokell (0).

Eventually, the match went to the final over, with Ireland needing 15. However, veteran Suzie Bates kept her composure, conceding only 10 runs as two new batters on the crease, Leah Paul and Louise Little, could not clear the fence.

New Zealand spinner Melie Kerr played a key role in the defense of the total, returning figures of 2-23 from her four overs. Rosemary Mair and Bree Illing claimed a wicket each.

Earlier, New Zealand were restricted to 140-6 in 20 overs after Ireland’s bowlers produced a clinical display.

Izzy Sharp top-scored with 36 from 28 balls, hitting four fours, while Brooke Halliday added 34 from 37 deliveries. Captain Kerr contributed 30 from 24 balls, and Bates remained unbeaten on 19 from 12.

Ireland mounted pressure on Whiteferns with tight bowling, with Orla Prendergast and Cara Murray taking two wickets apiece. Arlene Kelly and Aimee Maguire also chipped in with a wicket each.

USA advance to FIFA World Cup 2026 knockouts with win over Australia

The United States (USA) advanced to the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout rounds with a game to spare following an impressive 2-0 win over Australia on Friday, stoking the hopes of an already hyped host nation.

The US join fellow tournament co-hosts Mexico as the first teams to progress, and could be assured top spot in Group D if Turkey fail to beat Paraguay later Friday.

Excitement had been running high since last week’s US thrashing of Paraguay.

And a glorious day in the Pacific Northwest did not disappoint the red-and-white-clad fans who packed Seattle’s Lumen Field and its surrounding streets and bars.

Even before kickoff, chants of “USA” rocked a stadium best known as the raucous home of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, but also a US soccer hotbed that hosts the local Sounders.

Without injured talisman attacker Christian Pulisic, who failed to recover from a calf issue in time, coach Mauricio Pochettino switched to a 4-4-2 formation, bringing in second striker Ricardo Pepi.

For the second game running, the US were gifted an early lead, thanks to an own goal in the 11th minute.

Playing slightly wider than usual, star striker Folarin Balogun raced down the left and cut the ball back from the byline.

Under pressure from a lurking Pepi, Aussie defender Cameron Burgess steered the ball into his own net.

Having surprisingly dropped both goal scorers from their impressive opening win over Turkey, Australia looked toothless.

The US controlled possession and were lively and dynamic on the attack, Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest combining well down the right flank.

Alex Freeman doubled the US lead in the 44th minute from what was surprisingly his team’s first shot on target.

Taking a free kick from the right byline, Antonee Robinson ignored the scrum in the box and played the ball to Sergino Dest, wide open in the D, whose blocked shot looped up into the air.

Freeman — son of Super Bowl-winning NFL wide receiver Antonio Freeman — was first to the ball, heading it past Patrick Beach. The offside flag went up. But it was overturned by VAR, and the stadium rocked for a second a time.

Australia made three changes at the break — sending on Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda, the goalscorers against Turkey — and pushed higher up the field.

They were nearly caught out immediately. Balogun raced onto a through ball for a one-on-one chance, but his shot was blocked after a heavy touch.

Australia’s best chance so far came in the 62nd minute. The dangerous Cristian Volpato — who switched allegiance from Italy to Australia on the eve of the tournament — skied his shot from Irankunda’s cut-back pass.

With the US sitting back, Metcalfe had a shot saved, a rampaging Irankunda was brought down by Richards, and Jason Geria’s close-range effort was blocked in a nervy final phase for the hosts.

But despite late-flaring tensions between the teams, the Americans held on for the clean sheet and will have the luxury of playing Turkey next Thursday, knowing their spot in the round of 32 is secured.

With home advantage and sparkling form so far, US fans will be dreaming of a run to the quarter-finals, which they last reached in 2002, and even beyond.

Algeria raises concerns with FIFA over Lionel Messi

Algeria have lodged a complaint with FIFA over “refereeing injustice” in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 loss to Argentina, particularly a tackle by Lionel Messi, an Algerian football federation source told AFP on Friday.

Messi caught Algeria defender Aissa Mandi on the calf with a studs-up challenge from behind in the 30th minute of Tuesday’s match, but was not booked.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who had already given reigning world champions Argentina the lead, went on to score a hat-trick.

“The complaint primarily concerns Messi’s challenge, which deserved a red card, in everyone’s opinion,” said the federation source.

“There were also two elbow incidents… Both of which warranted dismissals.”

Algeria face Jordan in their second match on Monday, before completing their Group J campaign against Austria on Saturday, June 27.

“We are not saying that the Argentine team was not strong, but we cannot remain silent in the face of injustice,” the source added when asked why Algeria decided to file a complaint.

“There were three incidents that were crystal clear, and VAR did not intervene.”

Messi’s treble saw him tie former Germany striker Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record of 16 goals.

Algeria are hoping to reach the World Cup knockout phase for only the second time, following an extra-time loss to eventual winners Germany in the last 16 in 2014.

New Zealand punish sloppy England on sweltering day

Henry Nicholls’ superb unbeaten century saw New Zealand into an utterly dominant position against England in the second Test at the Oval on Friday.

New Zealand were 252-3 in their second innings at stumps on the third day in south London — a huge overall lead of 352 runs — with Nicholls 119 not out.

The Black Caps, looking to level this three-match series after a 115-run defeat in the first Test at Lord’s, had been faltering at 28-2 on Friday when Nicholls was joined in the middle by Rachin Ravindra.

But the two left-handers restored New Zealand’s grip on the game with an excellent third-wicket partnership of 161 in 33 overs that only ended when Ravindra was lbw for 76 to Jacob Bethell deep into the final session.

New Zealand led by exactly 100 runs on first innings after Matt Henry took five wickets as England were dismissed for 291 earlier on Friday.

England then had a glimmer of hope when New Zealand captain Tom Latham and fellow opener Devon Conway both fell cheaply.

And the Black Caps were almost 48-3 when Ravindra was dropped on just seven by James Rew, the struggling debutant England wicket-keeper failing to hold a diving left-handed chance off Josh Tongue.

Nicholls was given the unenviable task of replacing Kane Williamson at No 3 after arguably New Zealand’s greatest batter of all time shocked the cricket world by retiring from international duty following the first Test rather than waiting until the end of the series.

But the 34-year-old Nicholls, out for just 24 in the first innings, demonstrated plenty of grit and concentration second time around, while still scoring briskly.

The elegant Ravindra, following his reprieve by Rew, was largely untroubled by England’s quicks repeatedly bowling bouncers on a good pitch during a 79-ball fifty featuring 11 fours.

Stand-in England skipper Joe Root deployed seven bowlers in total, including his own part-time off-spin, during the day’s play.

It was Bethell’s left-arm spin, however, that proved Ravindra’s undoing when the batter was given out lbw after missing a sweep to leave New Zealand 189-3.

But the resolute Nicholls completed the 11th century of his 59-Test career when he pulled Bethell for four — his 14th boundary in 136 balls faced.

Earlier, fast-medium bowler Henry returned fine innings figures of 5-80 in 24 overs.

An England team showing five changes from Lord’s and missing captain Ben Stokes, omitted after breaking a team curfew, would have been in an even worse position but for tailender Matt Fisher’s 50 not out — his maiden Test half-century.

Fisher, on his Surrey home ground, was supported in a last-wicket partnership of 53 by Sonny Baker, one of three England debutants, after they came together with the hosts in dire straits at 238-9.

England had resumed play on 222-6 on Friday morning beneath sunny blue skies — seemingly ideal conditions for batting.

Debutant Jordan Cox added just five runs to his overnight was 22 when a clip off Henry was well-caught at short midwicket by a diving Latham.

Henry, troubled by back spasms at Lord’s, then dismissed Jofra Archer (eight) after a top-edged cut was brilliantly caught by wicket-keeper Tom Blundell, standing up to the stumps.

Tongue’s miscued drive off Henry was well-held one-handed, at the second attempt, by a back-pedalling Nathan Smith at mid-on to give the 34-year-old paceman his seventh five-wicket haul in 35 Tests.

FIFA World Cup: South Korea coach optimistic about knockouts despite defeat

South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo told his team to keep their heads up and channel their disappointment into sealing a spot in the World Cup knockout rounds after a 1-0 defeat to Mexico.

Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu dropped the ball to gift the co-hosts the only goal of a largely dull game on Thursday.

The narrow victory at a delirious Guadalajara stadium sent Mexico into the last 32 as Group A winners.

South Korea are still in a strong position to join them, sitting second in the group after beating the Czech Republic 2-1 in their opening match.

Hong’s men face South Africa on Wednesday in Monterrey knowing that a draw will guarantee they advance.

“The result is quite disappointing but the players executed their plans well overall,” Hong said, according to Yonhap News Agency.

“It’s a shame we conceded the goal the way we did, but the players gave their best effort.”

He added: “We don’t need to hang our heads, no matter how disappointing this outcome is.”

After a dreary first half in which South Korea had plenty of the ball without creating anything, Luis Romo’s goal just after the break turned out to be the winner.

Goalkeeper Kim came out for a high ball, collided with his own defender and dropped it, leaving Romo with an empty net.

Kim, 35, who missed the birth of his first child because he was preparing for the World Cup, told reporters he lost concentration.

There was also suggestions of a miscommunication with Lee Gi-hyuk, the defender he bumped into on the way down before dropping the ball.

“My call might not have been heard clearly, and it was a situation where various factors were involved,” said the goalkeeper.

South Korea will be favourites to defeat South Africa, who were beaten 2-0 by Mexico and rescued a late 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic on Thursday.

South Africa will be short of maximum strength because of suspensions, but Hong warned: “We can’t be thinking about which key players won’t play for them because it could make us feel complacent.

“I watched both of their matches so far and they have good speed. We have to be well organised against them.”

FIFA World Cup: Achraf Hakimi reacts to trial appeal rejection

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has shared his thoughts after a French court rejected his appeal against rape accusations.

The 27-year-old has been facing accusations of raping a 24-year-old woman at her home in Paris in 2023, after which an investigation was launched.

In February 2026, an investigating judge ordered a trial. But French media have reported that Hakimi’s recent appeal to have the trial dismissed has been denied.

After the appeal was rejected, Hakimi took to his social media account and shared a cryptic message.

“Justice looked me in the eyes and said to me: “If you weren’t famous, there never would have been a case,” he wrote.

The Paris-Saint-Germain (PSG) defender said he remained silent for years, believing that patience and trust in the justice system would lead to the right outcome.

“I chose to remain silent for years. I thought that staying dignified, being patient, and trusting the justice system would allow the right decisions to be made,” he continued.

The Morocco captain said a narrative that was not his own was being told at the expense of his family, his life, and what he described as the truth, adding that he sometimes felt he had become an easy target.

“Today, a story that is not mine is being told at the expense of my family, my life, and above all, the truth. Sometimes I feel like I’ve become an easy target.”

“I’ve been waiting for this trial since day one. And now I’m looking forward to it. Finally, I will be able to speak,” he concluded.

It is worth noting that all three of Morocco’s league-stage matches are scheduled in the United States. If his side advances to the knockout stages, he could be barred from entering Canada or Mexico for Morocco matches.

For those unaware, Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey, who is also facing similar charges, has been denied entry to Canada ahead of his side’s clash against Panama at the World Cup co-hosts.

The 32-year-old Partey has pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault by four different women between 2020 and 2022.
