Sanjay Manjrekar slams India’s ‘silly’ no-handshake policy

MUMBAI: Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has slammed India’s no-handshake policy against Pakistan, describing it as a “silly thing” and against the spirit of the game.

Since the Asia Cup 2025, India refrained from exchanging post-match handshakes with Pakistan across men’s and women’s age-group levels.

With another high-profile India-Pakistan clash scheduled today in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, debate has resurfaced over whether Indian players will continue the policy.

Manjrekar termed the stance inappropriate and urged clarity in approach.

“This ‘no shaking hands’ is such a silly thing that India has started. It’s unbecoming of a nation like ours. Either play properly within the spirit of the game or don’t play at all,” he wrote on his X.

At the pre-match press conference, India captain Suryakumar Yadav downplayed questions regarding the handshake issue, choosing not to elaborate.

“Wait for 24 hours. Eat well, sleep well, we will see tomorrow,” he told reporters.

Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha emphasised that cricket should be played in the right spirit and indicated his team’s willingness to follow tradition.

“Cricket should be played in the right spirit. My personal opinion may not matter, but cricket should be played the way it has always been played. It’s up to them to decide what to do,” Agha said.

Can Australia still qualify for T20 World Cup Super Eight?

KANDY: Australia men’s cricket team find themselves in a tricky position after a shock defeat to Zimbabwe on February 13, leaving their hopes of reaching the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 hanging in the balance.

The upset has blown Group B wide open, with four teams still in contention for the two qualification spots.

Australia are currently placed third in the group, behind Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, holding two points from two matches with a net run rate of 1.100.

However, the 23-run loss has put them at real risk of an early exit.

How can Australia qualify?

Australia are set to face Sri Lanka on February 16 and Oman on February 20, needing victories in both of their matches.

If they win these two matches, they can finish on six points, but qualification may then be decided by net run rate.

If Sri Lanka defeat Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe beat Ireland, leaving Australia, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe tied on six points while Ireland finish on two.

For a clearer path to the Super Eights, Australia would want either Sri Lanka to lose to Zimbabwe or Zimbabwe to lose to Ireland.

In both cases, only one other team would reach six points, significantly improving Australia’s chances of progressing.

What if they lose to Sri Lanka?

Even a defeat against Sri Lanka would not immediately end Australia’s campaign, but it would leave them relying heavily on other outcomes.

If Australia finish on four points, assuming they defeat Oman, Zimbabwe must lose both of their remaining fixtures against Ireland and Sri Lanka.

That combination would put Sri Lanka on eight points, while Australia, Zimbabwe, and Ireland would battle for the second qualifying spot with four points each, likely decided by net run rate.

With the group finely poised, Australia remain alive but walking a tightrope.

Their margin for error is minimal, and both performance and mathematics will determine whether they can avoid a rare early exit from the tournament.

India outclass Pakistan in ACC Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars 2026

BANGKOK: India cricket team recorded their first victory in the ACC Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars 2026 with a convincing eight-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan at the Terdthai Cricket Ground on Sunday.

After opting to bat first, Pakistan endured a difficult outing against a disciplined Indian bowling unit and were bowled out for just 93 in 18.5 overs.

Early strikes left Pakistan under pressure as Yusra Amir fell for one to Saima Thakor, while Omaima Sohail was dismissed for one by Jintimani Kalita, reducing them to 15-2 inside the first four overs.

The middle order failed to recover from the early blows.

Eman Naseer was run out after scoring four, Hafsa Khalid managed just one before falling to Thakor, and Huraina Sajjad added only two before being removed by Radha Yadav.

Amid the collapse, Shawaal Zulfiqar offered resistance with a fighting 23 off 29 balls, including three boundaries, before Yadav struck again.

Anosha Nasir chipped in with 17 but was run out, while Gull Rukh contributed 21 off 28 deliveries, hitting a four and a six, before falling to Prema Rawat.

Chasing a modest target, India completed the task comfortably, reaching the total in just 10.1 overs with two wickets down.

The star of the chase was Dinesh Vrinda, who produced a dominant unbeaten 55 off 29 balls, smashing 12 boundaries to seal the win.

Anushka Sharma supported with a steady 24 off 26 balls before being dismissed by Momina Riasat.

Pakistan did manage an early breakthrough when Waheeda Akhtar removed opener Humaira Kazi for a first-ball duck, but it proved only a minor setback.

Tejal Hasabnis remained unbeaten on 12 off five balls, striking a four and a six to finish the chase in style.

Vinicius bags brace as Real Madrid beat Sociedad, take La Liga lead

MADRID: Vinicius Junior won and converted two penalties as Real Madrid thumped Real Sociedad 4-1 on Saturday to move provisionally top of La Liga.

An impressive performance from Trent Alexander-Arnold on his first start in two-and-a-half months also helped Los Blancos move two points clear of champions Barcelona, who visit Girona on Monday.

Madrid’s convincing display inflicted a first defeat for visiting American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, in his 10th match at the helm of Real Sociedad.

Young striker Gonzalo Garcia and Fede Valverde were also on target for Alvaro Arbeloa’s Madrid, who face an important Champions League play-off match against Jose Mourinho’s Benfica on Tuesday in Lisbon.

“We did great work in attack and in defence… you could tell that we were defending as a team during the whole game,” Valverde told Real Madrid TV.

“We’ve had long weeks where we’ve been preparing a lot, and now we will fight for La Liga and the Champions League.”

Fit to start his first game since early December after a thigh injury, it did not take Alexander-Arnold long to make an impact.

The England defender’s cross was met with a delicate finish by Garcia, starting in place of French superstar Kylian Mbappe, who was feeling some knee discomfort.

“Trent is a very intelligent boy, who understands the game very well, and has quickly understood what we want from him,” Arbeloa told reporters.

“We’re lucky to have a player like this, who can play inside or outside… at set-pieces, with his kick, he can set us off on the counter-attack very well, he’s a great player.”

Real Sociedad pulled level after 21 minutes when Yangel Herrera was clumsily felled by Dean Huijsen in Madrid’s box.

Mikel Oyarzabal powered the spot-kick down the middle, but La Real’s joy was short-lived.

Vinicius won a penalty of his own at the other end when Jon Aramburu tripped him in the area, and the Brazilian sent Alex Remiro the wrong way.

Madrid were rampant, and Valverde netted a fine third in the 31st minute, moving into space on the edge of the box and curling into the top corner.

Matarrazzo sent on Goncalo Guedes at half-time, hoping his team could mount a comeback, but Aramburu conceded another penalty early in the second half.

It was Vinicius running at him once more which provoked it, with the winger nutmegging Aramburu and then eagerly hitting the deck as the right-back slid in.

Vinicius went for the bottom left corner this time, switching directions, and Remiro could not reach his strike.

With Jude Bellingham out injured and Mbappe sitting on the bench, Vinicius seemed to have more freedom to roam and revelled in being the key attacking figure.

“Since I’ve arrived, he’s had games at a really high level… he’s a player who goes beyond the statistics, how he can change a game, condition opponents, the number of players he can attract”, said Arbeloa.

“(Vinicius is) one of the best in the world, I’m lucky to coach him, he’s a great kid with a big heart.”

Garcia came close to a second but Real Sociedad defender Jon Martin, who performed well individually despite his team’s heavy defeat, cleared his effort off the line.

Vinicius was denied a hat-trick by the linesman’s flag as he used his shoulder to convert Arda Guler’s crossed free-kick, but had strayed just offside.

“The first half was tough, we weren’t comfortable… and in general we did badly,” Oyarzabal told Movistar after his team’s unbeaten run was brought to an end.

“We came here in a good dynamic and doing well, a bad game doesn’t have to spoil that.”

Earlier, Villarreal fell to a 2-1 defeat at Getafe in a blow to their hopes of a top-four finish.

The Yellow Submarine, currently sitting fourth, were far from their best, and Mauro Arambarri sent the hosts ahead from the penalty spot shortly before the break.

Martin Satriano extended Getafe’s lead early in the second half, with Georges Mikautadze pulling one back for Villarreal, but Marcelino Garcia Toral’s team could not find an equaliser.

Real Betis, fifth, could move within four points of Villarreal if they beat Mallorca on Sunday.

West Indies cruise past Nepal to seal Super Eight spot in T20 World Cup 2026

MUMBAI: West Indies delivered a commanding performance to defeat Nepal by nine wickets and secure qualification for the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Chasing a modest 136, the Caribbean side made the target look routine, reaching 136-1 in just 15.2 overs with a composed and clinical batting display led by captain Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer.

The run chase began positively as Brandon King and Hope stitched a steady 43-run opening stand.

King scored a brisk 22 off 17 balls, striking four boundaries before falling, but his dismissal did little to slow the momentum.

Hetmyer then joined Hope, and the duo ensured there were no further hiccups, building an unbeaten partnership to guide their side home comfortably.

Hope anchored the innings with an unbeaten 61 off 44 deliveries, registering his 10th T20I half-century with five fours and three sixes, while Hetmyer provided strong support with a fluent 46 not out from 32 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.

Earlier, West Indies’ bowlers set up the victory by restricting Nepal to 133-8 in their 20 overs.

All-rounder Jason Holder was the standout performer, claiming 4/27 in his four overs, while Roston Chase, Shamar Joseph, Matthew Forde and Akeal Hosein chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Nepal’s innings never found sustained momentum after early setbacks.

Kushal Bhurtel fell for just one in the opening over, while captain Rohit Paudel and wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh departed cheaply, leaving the side reeling at 17-3.

Holder and Joseph continued to apply pressure through the middle overs, further denting Nepal’s progress.

A late resistance came through Dipendra Singh Airee and Sompal Kami, who added a valuable 54-run partnership to push Nepal past the 100-run mark.

Airee scored a fighting 58 off 47 balls, including three fours and three sixes, while Kami remained unbeaten on 26 from 15 deliveries with four boundaries.

Islamabad United reveal Shamar Joseph’s replacement for PSL 11

ISLAMABAD: Three-time champions Islamabad United have strengthened their pace attack ahead of the upcoming Pakistan Super League season by signing Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for West Indies pacer Shamar Joseph.

The franchise confirmed the development through its official social media channels, announcing that Muzarabani has been added to the squad for PKR 1.10 crore.

The post welcomed the Zimbabwean quick in a light-hearted tone, signalling excitement around his arrival.

“Blessing your timelines as Blessing Muzarabani joins Islamabad United,” the franchise captioned its post.

Muzarabani brings valuable PSL experience, having previously represented Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings between 2021 and 2023.

During that period, he featured in 15 matches and picked up 21 wickets, establishing himself as a reliable pace option in league conditions.

Islamabad had originally secured Shamar Joseph at his base price of PKR 11 million during the PSL 11 player auction held at the Expo Centre Lahore on February 11.

However, the franchise opted to release the Caribbean fast bowler and reinforce their bowling resources with Muzarabani.

The tall pacer arrives in strong form, having recently starred for Zimbabwe in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, where his four-wicket haul powered his side to a memorable victory over Australia.

Islamabad United remove Shamar Joseph from squad: report

Islamabad United have removed West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph from the squad ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11, Cricinfo reported on Saturday.

According to the report, the pacer is set to be replaced with Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani.

The report also states that the ‘contract has been terminated by mutual consent’.

“Neither the player nor the franchise intend to make a public statement on the matter, and that the decision is set to be approved by the PSL’s technical committee,” it adds.

Joseph was bought by United for 1.10 crore with no other team bidding for him in the player auction.

It is worth mentioning that shortly after he was acquired, the franchise faced backlash from fans over Joseph’s alleged past.

Blessing Muzarabani previously represented Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans from 2021 to 2024.

The 29-year-old will be the second Zimbabwean player, after Sikandar Raza, to feature in PSL 11.

For the unversed, the auction held on February 10 in Lahore was the first of its kind in the league’s history, replacing the draft—a player selection process—that had been used for the first 10 editions since it started in 2016.

The change to the player selection model followed the expansion, which added two new franchises: Sialkot Stallionz and Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen.

The PSL 11 will commence on 26 March across Pakistan.

Retained/direct signing: Shadab Khan (7.00 cr), Salman Irshad (1.2 cr), Andries Gous (1.4 cr), and Devon Conway (6.30 cr).

WATCH: Suryakumar Yadav mimics Usman Tariq’s action

COLOMBO: India skipper Suryakumar Yadav was seen bowling like Pakistan off-spinner Usman Tariq during the team’s net session ahead of tomorrow’s high-stakes encounter in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The video was shared on the ICC social handles with Surya bowling to fellow batters in the nets.

“Suryakumar Yadav reiterates India’s focus on being ready to potentially come up against Usman Tariq,” the caption of the post read.

Earlier, the Indian captain also pondered on the question regarding facing Usman Tariq and his unique bowling action.

“Even in the exam, if a question comes out of the syllabus, we have to do it,” he replied to the reporter.

“You can’t leave it. He’s a different character, but we can’t surrender to him. We have practiced and are all very excited,” he added.

Tariq, inspired by former Indian captain MS Dhoni, has caught eyebrows with his unique action.

Tariq has been in impressive form in the ongoing tournament, claiming five wickets in two matches so far.

Overall, he has picked up 11 wickets in four T20Is, maintaining an outstanding average of 7.90 and an economy of 5.93.

During Australia’s recent T20I series tour of Pakistan, Australian batter Cameron Green was seen making a gesture that many interpreted as questioning Tariq’s action.

This was not the first time Tariq’s bowling has been scrutinised. Tariq was previously reported during PSL 9 and PSL 10, but his action was officially cleared on both occasions.

Addressing the scrutiny last year, Tariq explained that the natural bend in his elbows often creates confusion.

“There are two corners on my elbow that make it hard for me to straighten,” he said in an interview last year.

“I gave two tests at labs in Pakistan, and my action was cleared within a week. I didn’t get told to change anything. I was confident because I knew I was not throwing.”

Markram, Jansen lead South Africa rout of New Zealand

AHMEDABAD: Marco Jansen’s four-wicket haul, backed by a sublime 86* from skipper Aiden Markram, led South Africa to a seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the Group D fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

South Africa chased down 176 in 17.1 overs with aggressive stroke play, losing only three wickets in the process.

Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram provided a rollicking start. The pair made light work of the chase with 62 in 4.4 overs.

Markram remained the core aggressor with elegant stroke play while De Kock played second fiddle.

The stand culminated with De Kock’s wicket, castled by Lockie Ferguson for 20.

Despite the wicket, New Zealand were unable to stem the runs flow with Ryan Rickelton and Markram both capitalizing on lightning fast outfield.

Rickelton was caught after scoring 21 from 11 with the help of a six and two fours.

At this stage, South Africa were 102-2 in 7.4 overs.

Meanwhile, Markram continued on his charge and never allowed New Zealand bowlers to dominate

South Africa eventually cruised to victory with Markram remaining unbeaten on 86 from 44 balls, laced with four maximums and eight fours.

David Miller, on the other hand, chipped in with 24 off 17, including a six and four.

For New Zealand, there was nothing much in the bowling ranks as Rachin Ravindra, James Neesham, and Lockie Ferguson scalped one apiece.

The victory consolidated South Africa top spot in Group with six points from three games.

Earlier, South Africa pacer Marco Jansen’s four-wicket haul restricted New Zealand’s batting lineup from posting an imposing total

Asked to bat first here under lights at the Narendra Modi Stadium, New Zealand managed 175-7 in 20 overs.

Finn Allen and Tim Seifert were off to a flyer, racing to 33 in 3.2 overs.

Siefert, who remained cautious, was the first wicket to fall as Jansen snared him for 13.

After an early wicket, struggling Rachin Ravindra came to the crease and was involved in a brief 24-run stand with Allen.

The last over of the powerplay saw New Zealand losing the plot as both batters were sent back by Marco Jansen.

The tall left-arm pacer first removed Ravindra, thanks to a sharp catch from David Miller at short third position. The soutpaw could only manage 13 from eight, including a six and a four.

Second, he bagged the prized wicket of Allen on the final ball of the over to leave BlackCaps reeling at 57-3 in six overs. Allen’s 31 off 17 included two sixes and four boundaries.

The BlackCaps’ woes were further compounded when Keshav Maharaj castled Glenn Phillips for just one.

With New Zealand 64-4 in 6.4 overs, Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell came to the fore and rescued their side with a crucial 74-run partnership off 44 balls.

The pair soaked up the pressure and took the score to 138 runs in 14 overs before New Zealand again lost their way with late South Africa strikes.

They lost three wickets in quick time as James Neesham played a little cameo off 23 from 15, with the aid of three fours, to take them to a respectable total.

Daryl Mitchell scored 32 off 24, striking a six and two fours, whereas Chapman top-scored with 48 from 26 balls. His knock featured two sixes and six boundaries.

For South Africa, Marco Jansen took 4-40 in four overs while Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, and Lungi Ngidi scalped one apiece.
