Liverpool great Gerrard opens up on Salah’s ’emotional’ outburst

Liverpool great Steven Gerrard believes the club still needs Mohamed Salah as he urged the star forward to “reverse away” from an extraordinary outburst where he accused the faltering Premier League champions of “throwing him under the bus”.

The Egypt international was omitted from the squad that travelled to Italy for Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win at Inter Milan following a blistering attack on manager Arne Slot and the club hierarchy after being left on the bench for last weekend’s 3-3 draw at Leeds.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher labelled Salah a “disgrace” for his comments, but Gerrard urged the player and management to reunite for the good of everyone at Anfield.

“He’s obviously really upset he’s not playing, which I respect,” former Liverpool captain Gerrard told TNT Sports.

“A couple of lines about throwing people under the bus, wrong. Need to reverse a little bit away from that, to deal with that with the manager.”

Gerrard added bust-ups between players and management were nothing new.

“I’ve seen this and I’ve lived it with (Luis) Suarez when he fell out with Brendan (Rodgers) face to face.

I’ve been there and done it myself. I did the Salah statements in 30 seconds against (Manchester) United and got sent off,” he explained.

“So no one’s perfect and we’ve all had head loss as players, where we’ve done emotional things,” said Gerrard, who hoped Salah would eventually realise he had been a “bit emotional and a bit hasty”.

Salah’s remarks sparked reports that Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer in history could leave Anfield in January despite signing a lucrative new contract in April.

The 33-year-old posted a picture of himself training alone in Liverpool’s weights room on Tuesday.

Salah’s outburst has piqued interest in Saudi Arabia, with a source at the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) telling AFP it will do “whatever it can” to buy him.

Gerrard, however, said: “At the end of the day, Liverpool need Mo Salah back playing well, scoring goals because he is the best player, the best scorer, and he will help them get out of this.

If this goes on, this is bigger than what we all know and what we see.”

Salah is set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations after next weekend’s home Premier League match against Brighton.

An unused substitute at Leeds, Salah told reporters at Elland Road: “I said many times before that, I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden we don’t have any relationship.

“I don’t know why but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.”

Salah made his explosive comments in the midst of a dismal season for both him and Liverpool.

He has played a key role in Liverpool’s two Premier League titles and one Champions League triumph during his iconic spell on Merseyside.

But he has scored just four goals in 13 Premier League appearances this season, with Liverpool 10th in the table.

Shahid Afridi praises record-breaking Rohit Sharma

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi praised India’s talismanic batter Rohit Sharma for breaking his record of hitting the most sixes in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

A week earlier, Sharma etched his name into the history books after shattering Shahid Afridi’s record for most sixes in ODIs during the clash against South Africa.

The right-handed batter reached the landmark in his 277th match.

Most Sixes in ODIs

RG Sharma (IND): 2007–2025 — 271 inns, 11516 runs, 355 sixes

Shahid Afridi (PAK): 1996–2015 — 369 inns, 8,064 runs, 351 sixes

Chris Gayle (WI): 1999–2019 — 294 inns, 10,480 runs, 331 sixes

Sanath Jayasuriya (SL): 1989–2011 — 433 inns, 13,430 runs, 270 sixes

MS Dhoni (IND): 2004–2019 — 297 inns, 10,773 runs, 229 sixes

Afridi, who held the record for 15 years, spoke about Sharma’s ability and expressed his views on the feat.

“Records are meant to be broken, and this too is now bettered. I am happy that a player I have always liked has broken this record,” he said.

My record of the fastest century stood for nearly 18 years, but it was finally broken. Records are set by one player, and another comes and breaks them. This is cricket,” Afridi explained.

“I played alongside Rohit for the Deccan Chargers in my only IPL season. During practice, I watched him bat, and his class impressed me. I knew he would one day play for India, and he has proved himself as a classy batter.”

The six-hitting maestro also talked about the ace duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, calling them the cornerstones of India’s batting line-up.

“It’s a fact that Virat and Rohit are the backbones of the Indian batting line-up, and the way they have played in the recent ODI series, it can confidently be said that they can play until the 2027 World Cup,” the 48-year-old said.

“You need to preserve both these players. When India face weaker teams, they can try some new players and rest Virat and Rohit,” he added.

He also slammed India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, for his decisions.

“The way Gautam started his stint, it looked like he thought whatever he says is right. But after some time, it is proven that you are not always right,” he concluded.

Sahibzada Farhan breaks into top five in ICC T20I rankings

DUBAI: Pakistan’s top-order batter Sahibzada Farhan continued his upward trajectory in the ICC Men’s Player Rankings as he broke into the top five of T20I batters on Wednesday.

Farhan, who dominated the recently concluded home T20I tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe as the leading run-scorer, has climbed to fifth place with 752 rating points, edging past India’s Tilak Varma.

His surge reflects a period of sustained consistency that has quickly elevated him into the global elite of the format.

Pakistan also continue to hold a firm grip on the top spot in the T20I all-rounders category, with Saim Ayub retaining his No.1 ranking.

India’s Hardik Pandya, meanwhile, moved up three places to fourth, closing in on the upper tier.

There was encouraging movement for Pakistan in the Test batting charts as well. Middle-order batter Saud Shakeel broke into the Top 10, climbing one spot to reach a 10th position.

In the Test bowling rankings, however, there was a slight dip for Noman Ali, who slipped to fourth after Australia’s Mitchell Starc jumped three places into third on the back of strong Ashes outings.

Pakistan’s ODI bowlers also enjoyed a rankings boost. Shaheen Shah Afridi moved up two places to 19th, while Haris Rauf gained one spot to reach 22nd.

BBL 15: Sydney Sixers reveals Babar Azam’s unique jersey number

Sydney Sixers have given their marquee overseas signing, Babar Azam, a distinctive identity ahead of the Big Bash League (BBL) season 15, unveiling a customised jersey number for him.

The former Pakistan skipper, who arrived in Sydney this week to begin his BBL stint, will wear the number 056, a creative adaptation of his usual 56.

The franchise introduced the unique number across their social media platforms, releasing images of Babar at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) sporting his new look.

The tweak comes out of necessity, with Mitchell Starc, a mainstay at the Sixers, retaining the traditional 56 jersey.

The club showcased the pairing with a playful reveal captioned, “056 x 56 🔥 Babar wears 056, and Starc will wear 56 in BBL|15.”

The Sixers followed up the announcement with a short teaser video marking Babar’s arrival, showing the star batter walking into the dressing room with the simple caption: “He’s arrived.”

His inclusion is among the most anticipated features of BBL 15, which begins December 14 and runs through January 25, 2026, with 44 matches, most in prime-time evening slots.

Pakistan’s presence in this year’s competition is set to be one of the strongest in recent editions. Alongside Babar and Shaheen Afridi, several other national players were snapped up in the BBL 15 auction.

Mohammad Rizwan and Hassan Khan will represent the Melbourne Renegades, Haris Rauf joins the Melbourne Stars, Shadab Khan links up with the Sydney Thunder, and Hasan Ali features for the Adelaide Strikers.

Virat Kohli closes in on leader Rohit Sharma in ODI Batting Rankings

DUBAI: Virat Kohli continued his climb back toward the top of ODI batting, with the India great making noteworthy gains in the latest ICC Men’s Player Rankings.

Once the No. 1-ranked ODI batter for over three years, Kohli has not held the top spot since Babar Azam overtook him in April 2021.

However, his resurgence has been fuelled by a prolific three-match ODI series against South Africa, where he amassed 302 runs and was named Player of the Series.

His consistency pushed him two places up to No.2 in the ODI batting charts, now sitting just eight rating points behind teammate and current top-ranked batter Rohit Sharma.

Rohit, who scored 146 runs during the series, retained his position at the summit.

India’s next ODI assignment, a home series against New Zealand beginning January 11, now carries added intrigue, with Rohit and Kohli set for a direct battle for the premier batting spot.

KL Rahul also continued his steady rise, moving up two places to No.12 following his reliable contributions through the South Africa series.

In the bowling department, Kuldeep Yadav was the standout mover, climbing three spots to No.3 among ODI bowlers.

South Africa’s batters also reaped rewards despite losing the series 2–1, with Quinton de Kock jumping to No.13, Aiden Markram up to 25th, and Temba Bavuma reaching 37th in the ODI rankings.

There was movement in the T20I charts as well, most notably with South Africa’s Dewald Brevis breaking into the top 10. The 21-year-old moved up three places to eighth after South Africa’s opening T20I against India.

Among bowlers, India’s dominant win in Cuttack propelled Axar Patel (13th), Arshdeep Singh (20th), and Jasprit Bumrah (25th) up the pecking order.

In Tests, Australia’s Mitchell Starc made one of the week’s biggest leaps. Consecutive Player-of-the-Match performances in the first two Ashes Tests, where he collected 18 wickets, lifted the left-armer three places to a career-best No.3 ranking.

Meanwhile, England’s batting struggles saw Harry Brook slip to fourth, with Kane Williamson and Steve Smith each climbing a spot behind Joe Root.

Pakistan begin FIH Pro League campaign with Netherlands defeat

Defending champions Netherlands opened their FIH Pro League campaign with a commanding 5–2 victory over debutants Pakistan at the Santiago del Estero Hockey Club in Argentina.

Pakistan stunned the Dutch early, taking the lead through a moment of brilliance from Hannan Shahid.

The young forward carved his way in from the left flank, slicing through the Dutch defence before smashing his shot past Mauritz Visser to announce Pakistan’s arrival in the competition.

But the Netherlands, seasoned campaigners and among the favourites once again, settled quickly.

A sharp tackle from Thierry Brinkman triggered their first major surge down the right, with Koen Bijen finding space upfront to level the score before the end of the first quarter.

Just moments before the break, Timo Boers made it 2–1 with a tidy penalty-corner strike, the first sign of what would become the decisive difference between the sides.

Pakistan hockey team refused to fade, and early in the second quarter, Sufyan Khan dragged his team back into the contest with a penalty-corner conversion to make it 2–2 at half-time.

The match, though, ultimately shifted in the third quarter as the Dutch showcased their set-piece precision.

Tijmen Reyenga restored their lead with another penalty-corner finish, and Boers added his second of the match shortly after, again from a dead-ball situation.

Duco Telgenkamp then produced a sharp finish from the baseline to stretch the advantage to 5–2, completing a dominant period for the defending champions.

Reyenga’s impact on both ends of the field earned him the Player of the Match award, as the Netherlands closed out the final quarter with composure and control.

Pakistan, despite the defeat, showed glimpses of their potential and will now turn their attention to the remaining fixtures of the mini-tournament.

They face hosts Argentina on December 12, meet the Netherlands again on December 13, and wrap up their first Pro League outing against Argentina on December 15.

Tickner rushed to hospital as New Zealand bundle West Indies for 205

WELLINGTON: New Zealand fought back to claim first day honours in the second Test against the West Indies, but the home side were rocked when seam bowler Blair Tickner was taken to hospital with a nasty injury.

New Zealand were 24-0 at the close of play after bowling the West Indies out for 205 in 75 overs.

Tickner was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, taking 4-32 from 16 overs, but his day ended prematurely when he was injured fielding and left on a stretcher.

Tickner attempted to dive for a ball on the boundary and failed to get up after falling heavily. New Zealand Cricket said he had suffered a left shoulder injury.

Medical staff rushed to Tickner’s aid, and after some worrying moments, he eventually sat up before being taken away to an ambulance.

Captain Tom Latham was seven not out and Devon Conway on 16 after the opening pair made it safely through to stumps against nine overs from the new ball.

Latham earlier won the toss and chose to bowl, only to see the West Indies reach 66-0 before the breakthrough came.

Tickner then took two wickets in two overs to get New Zealand underway, causing headaches with his accurate line and length.

The West Indies lost opener John Campbell three balls after lunch for 44, including six fours, but consolidated to be 175-4 at tea before losing six wickets for just 30 runs in the final session.

Tickner had support from debutant Michael Rae, who snared 3-67 from 18 overs in his maiden Test.

Shai Hope was the best of the visiting batsmen, scoring 48 from 80 deliveries with eight fours, supported by Campbell and 33 from Brandon King.

Injury-depleted New Zealand named two debutants in their side, with wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay and seamer Rae replacing regular gloveman Tom Blundell and Matt Henry.

The West Indies were also forced into changes after Tagenarine Chanderpaul was injured in training the day before the match, replaced by King at the top of the order.

Kavem Hodge came in for Alick Athanaze, and fast-bowler Anderson Phillip replaced Johann Layne.

Late penalty drama helps Liverpool edge past Inter Milan

Liverpool bounced back from a damaging row with Mohamed Salah by beating Inter Milan 1-0 on Tuesday and kicking their Champions League campaign back into life thanks to a late penalty which left the Italians baffled and livid.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s spot-kick in the 88th minute gave the Reds a huge win at the San Siro in the absence of Egypt star Salah, who was left in England after publicly criticising manager Arne Slot at the weekend.

Liverpool fans loudly chanted Slot’s name at the end of a largely drab match which was decided by Felix Zwayer’s decision to give the English champions a perfect chance to snatch the points which Szoboszlai gobbled up.

“The penalty did look soft but that’s given anywhere else on the pitch,” said Andy Robertson to Amazon Prime.

“We all needed it. We know the results and performances aren’t good enough. It’s important this club is in the Champions League. It was a huge result for all of us.”

Inter’s players were enraged at the awarding of the penalty for a light shirt tug by Alessandro Bastoni on Florian Wirtz, but it gave Slot a happy end to a troubled few days.

The closest either team came to scoring before then was when Ibrahima Konate had his close-range header ruled out, after a lengthy VAR check, for a Hugo Ekitike handball in the 37th minute.

“We are disappointed, angry, a bit of everything,” said Inter midfielder Piotr Zielinski to Sky Sport in Italy.

“It was a good performance, we lacked a little something in the final third to put it into the net, but the refereeing decisions… If they give penalties for this, then everything will be a penalty.”

Tuesday’s win puts Liverpool on 12 points from six games and inside the top eight positions which offer direct qualification for the last 16, ahead of Wednesday’s fixtures.

Inter, meanwhile, are fifth on the same tally but have lost their last two European fixtures and created nearly nothing against an injury-hit Liverpool who were missing not just rebel star Salah but also unfit Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo.

Last season 16 points was enough to skip the play-offs and Cristian Chivu’s team are by no means guaranteed that as they host Arsenal before travelling to Borussia Dortmund in their final two league phase fixtures.

And another defeat in a big game means dropping out of the top eight is a real prospect.

Liverpool’s trip to Milan has been dominated by Salah’s extraordinary criticism of Slot, who on Monday admitted that he had “no clue” as to whether the rebel attacker had played his last game for the Reds.

Salah sparked a firestorm when he said he felt like he had been “thrown under the bus” by the club and no longer had a relationship with Slot after being left on the bench for Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Leeds, the third match in a row for which he has been relegated to the role of substitute.

His outburst led to Saudi Arabian sources saying on Tuesday they wanted to recruit the 33-year-old in January, even though he signed a new contract in April.

“It’s difficult but it’s a collective difficult situation that we’re all in,” said Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

“Between Mo and the club, things are going on and he’s not here today, that’s the reality. I don’t think anything has changed in terms of our focus and determination.”

Liverpool had won just four times in 15 matches in all competitions coming into Tuesday’s match but Inter failed to pile any early pressure on their opponents.

Inter didn’t have their first shot of any description until the 37th minute while Liverpool, who were nowhere near their best, had good attempts from Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch before Konate’s header was eventually ruled out.

That woke up both Inter and a strangely flat home crowd of nearly 74,000 and Lautaro Martinez ended up wasting the best chance of the first half when he headed Bastoni’s cross too close to Alisson Becker.

But the second half was a total flop and as the minutes passed, it became clear that a stalemate was fine for both teams until Szoboszlai rifled home his controversial winning penalty.
