HOUSTON: Portugal defender Ruben Dias has been ruled out of his side’s opening FIFA World Cup 2026 against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Head coach Robert Martinez announced that Dias will be unavailable for the opening game after sustaining an injury during a World Cup friendly against Nigeria.

“Rúben is not at 100 per cent; there is no point in taking risks. He is recovering and will be available later,” he said.

Before the tournament began, Dias expressed confidence in his side’s ability to lift the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy.
