Jamal, Baig propel Chattogram Royals into BPL final

MIRPUR: Mirza Baig and Aamer Jamal starred as Chattogram Royals sealed a place in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025-26 final with a six-wicket victory over Rajshahi Warriors here at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, on Tuesday.

Set mere 134 to chase in Qualifier 1, Royals hit the winning runs on the third ball of the final over.

Mirza Baig and Mohammad Naim laid a strong foundation with a 64-run stand in 11.3 overs.

Naim 30 from 38 included three fours.

Despite the wicket, Chattogram Royal kept cruising as the Pakistani duo of Hasan Nawaz and Mirza Baig stitched a 34-run partnership, which brought the total to 98 in 15.3 overs.

Despite the wickets, Baig held the innings together and brought his side near the finishing line.

He eventually departed after scoring 45 from 47 balls with the help of four boundaries.

With nine required of the final over, Royals skipper Mahedi Hasan smashed a six and took a double run to take his side into the final. He remained unbeaten on 19 from nine balls.

For Rajshahi Warriors,  Abdul Gaffar Saqlain scalped two wickets.

Earlier, put into bat first, Rajshahi Warriors batting lineup faltered under pressure and were skittled for 133 at the end of their 20 overs.

Sahibzada Farhan and Tanzid Hasan put on a 30-run partnership for the opening wicket in 5.3 overs.

Farhan was caught after scoring 21 off 19, which included a six and two fours.

However, it was Mahedi Hasan’s back-to-back strikes on successive deliveries that turned the game on its head. The spinner first snared Mushfiqur Rahim for a duck and followed up the wicket with the captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, who made eight.

As a result, Warriors were reduced to 49-3 in 8.4 overs.

Despite wickets tumbling around him, Tanzid kept his head cool, but Hasan Nawaz ended his resistance in the 14th over.

He departed after top-scoring for his side with 41 off 37, striking three fours and a six.

Aamer Jamal, meanwhile, cut through the lower order with two wickets as Abdul Gaffar Saqlain hit a quick-fire 32 from 15 to take his side to a competitive total.

The right-hander’s innings included three sixes and two fours.

For Chattogram Royal, Aamer Jamal bowled three overs and picked up two wickets while giving away 27. Mahedi Hasan also managed to pick two, while the rest of the five bowlers also picked one apiece.

Pakistan likely to make one change for second South Africa Test: reports

CAPE TOWN: Pakistan team management is likely to exclude all-rounder Aamir Jamal from their Playing XI for the second Test against South Africa, scheduled to start here at Newlands on 3 January.

Pakistan suffered a two-wicket defeat in a thrilling first Test of the two-match series against South Africa at SuperSport Park.

Reports suggest that the team management is considering including left-arm fast bowler Mir Hamza in the lineup instead of Aamir Jamal.

During the first Test, Jamal recorded scores of 28 and 18 with the bat. With the ball, he took two wickets in the first innings, however, he bowled only nine overs across two innings.

Although the pitch at Newlands typically offers favourable conditions for spin bowlers, it appears that Pakistan’s management is not considering the inclusion of any specialist spinner in their playing XI.

Noman Ali, a left-arm spinner who made a significant impact by claiming 20 wickets at an impressive average of 13.85 during two Test matches against England in October 2024, is expected to stay on the sidelines.

Instead, the team’s management is likely to place their trust in all-rounder Agha Salman, who will take on the role of the sole spinner.

Pakistan squad for Test series against South Africa

“Babar is defensive while Shan looks to attack”: Aamer Jamal on captaincy

Pakistan all-rounder Aamer Jamal drew a comparison between the captaincy styles of Babar Azam and Shan Masood.

Jamal, in an interview with a local news outlet, was asked to share his take on the captaincy of Babar and Shan.

In response to the question, the all-rounder, who made his T20I and Test debut under Babar Azam and Shan Masood’s leadership respectively, stated that both the captains have different mindsets and approach the game differently.

He claimed to have a good bond with both of them before explaining that Babar’s style of captaincy is a bit defensive while Shan is someone who thinks aggressively.

“When it comes to captaincy, both have their own different mindsets. Shan Bhai’s approach is different, and Bobby Bhai’s approach is different. I have very good terms with both of them,” said Jamal.

“I have had good terms with Shan Bhai since the time I played first-class cricket. When I joined the Pakistan team for practice bowling, he treated me very well.

“Both have different mindsets. I believe Bobby Bhai is a bit defensive. He thinks about securing the team first. Shani Bhai is a bit aggressive as he belives if somebody throws punch, you should too.

“As captains, both of them understand you and ask about your needs and what you require,” he concluded.

Remember, Aamer Jamal has been recovering from a back injury he sustained in the ongoing County cricket season.

Jamal joined Warwickshire after a sensational Test debut on Pakistan’s tour to Australia where he picked up 18 wickets in three matches.

However, the Pakistan all-rounder could only represent Warwickshire in two County Championship matches and one Vitality Blast fixture.

He was last seen in action for the side on June 8 and has been sidelined since then as he suffered a back injury.

Aamer Jamal’s stint with Warwickshire cut short due to injury

Pakistan all-rounder Aamer Jamal left Warwickshire midway due to a back injury he sustained in the ongoing cricket season.

Notably, Aamer Jamal’s contract with Warwickshire was originally supposed to expire on July 19 but his rehabilitation progress indicated that he would not be able to attain complete fitness by then and thus the contract was mutually terminated prematurely.

“This is my first experience with a significant injury, and it’s been challenging to accept. I’m now focused on getting back to full fitness and resuming play,” Jamal was quoted saying by Warwickshire.

“I would have liked my time with the Bears to have gone differently, but I appreciate the support from everyone at the club and wish them success for the rest of the season,” he added.

Warwickshire performance director Gavin Larsen praised Jamal’s determination and attitude throughout his injury and rehabilitation before expressing his desire that the all-rounder will recover soon to be able to represent his country.

“Aamir has worked incredibly hard with our medical and strength and conditioning team,” said Larsen, “but unfortunately, we’ve run out of time to get him back on the field and bowling at full pace,” stated Larsen.

“It’s disappointing because he showed tremendous potential in Australia with his pace and aggression. I know he’s very disappointed not to have demonstrated his capabilities to the Bears fans.

“We can’t fault Aamir’s attitude during his rehab. I am confident he will return fit and ready to represent Pakistan soon. We wish him all the best.”
