Pakistan team reaches UAE to compete in Asia Cup 2022

DUBAI: Pakistan Men’s Cricket reached here from Amsterdam to participate in the upcoming Asia Cup, scheduled to commence on August 27.

Pakistan contingent, after concluding the ODI series against the Netherlands, has now reached the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to participate in the forthcoming Asia Cup.

Upon their arrival here, the team will enjoy a rest day in the hotel before starting their training for the multi-national event tomorrow.

National players including Iftikhar Ahmed, Usman Qadir, Haider Ali, and Asif Ali will reach here in the afternoon from Lahore. Whereas, right-arm young pacer Mohammad Hasnain will join the squad after reaching here from the United Kingdom (UK).

It is pertinent to mention here Hasnain was not part of the initial squad, announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board for the Asia Cup, and got the opportunity to make his way back into the team after a gruelling knee injury to Pakistan ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The Green Shirts will start their Asia Cup 2022 campaign on August 28 as they take on their arch-rivals India in an anticipated clash.

AMSTERDAM: Pakistan ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi requested his fans to pray for his speedy recovery and comeback to the national team.

Shaheen, on his way to Dubai along with the national squad, talked to this reporter here and appealed to the nation to pray for the speedy recovery of the left-arm pacer.

“I request the fans to pray for my quick recovery. I’ll be back soon Inshallah,” he stated.

On his departure to Dubai, the left-arm pacer also interacted with the fans and also posed for selfies with them.

Earlier, PCB Medical Advisory Committee and independent specialists suggested the star pacer to rest for four to six weeks in light of the latest scans and reports.

Following this, the left-arm pacer was ruled out of the Asia Cup 2022 and the home T20I series against England and is likely to make his comeback in the home series against New Zealand.

It is pertinent to mention here that the 22-year-old pacer sustained the injury amid Pakistan’s first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Hasnain to replace injured Shaheen for Asia Cup: PCB

LAHORE: Fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain will replace injured Shaheen Shah Afridi in the national squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 scheduled from August 27 in the United Arab Emirates.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday announced the right-arm pacer Hasnain as a replacement to the team’s main strike bowler Shaheen after the latter has been ruled out for the Asia Cup due to a knee ligament injury.

The 22 years old Hasnain will join the side from the United Kingdom where he is currently playing The Hundred tournament representing Oval Invincibles.

Hasnain has represented Pakistan in 18 T20Is in which he has taken 17 wickets.

After concluding the ongoing tour of the Netherlands the national contingent is set to depart for Dubai on Monday, whereas,  Asif Ali, Haider Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed and Usman Qadir will leave for Dubai in the wee hours of Tuesday replacing Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Haris, Salman Ali Agha and Zahid Mehmood.

Pakistan team will face the arch-rivals India in their first encounter of the Asia Cup on August 28.

Pathirana receives maiden call-up as Sri Lanka reveal squad for Asia Cup

COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) unveiled an 18-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022, scheduled to commence on August 27 in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Following his amazing run in the domestic circuit and in the previous edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), young Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana has received a maiden call-up to the national squad for the Asia Cup 2022.

Experienced all-rounder Dasun Shanaka will be leading the Sri Lankan side in the multi-national event. Whereas, most of the names were retained from their previous series against Australia in June.

 

Sri Lanka will start their Asia Cup 2022 campaign against Afghanistan on August 27 in the curtain-raiser. Whereas, the anticipated clash of the tournament between arch-rivals Pakistan and India will take place on August 28.

Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh have already announced their squads for the continental event, while Afghanistan are yet to name their contingent.

‘Shaheen is our best bowler, so we’ll miss him in Asia Cup’ says Shadab

ROTTERDAM: Pakistan leg-spin all-rounder Shadab Khan opined regarding ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi’s exclusion from the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 and acknowledged that the team will miss his services.

Shadab, while interacting with media here, expressed his displeasure on Shaheen’s injury update which resulted in him crashing out on the Asian event and the final ODI against the Netherlands, while clarifying that the national selectors will decide the latter’s replacement.

“Shaheen Shah Afridi has been ruled out of the team for six weeks. He will not be available for selection for the Asia Cup,” Shadab confirmed.

“We will miss him tomorrow. He is our best bowler, so his unavailability will be felt by the entire team. Now, the selectors will decide who’s going to replace him,” he maintained.

The deputy captain of the Pakistan ODI side then went on to share the team’s approach for the third ODI against the Netherlands as the touring side eye to complete a clean sweep against the hosts.

“We will play tomorrow’s match aggressively as per our team’s approach,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan lead the ongoing three-match ODI series against the Netherlands 2-0.

Bangladesh Cricket Board unveils squad for Asia Cup 2022

DHAKA: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022, scheduled to commence on August 27 in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Following Shakib Al Hasan’s appointment as the new T20I captain, the BCB has also revealed their squad for the forthcoming Asian event.

Right-handed middle-order batter Sabbir Rahman made his way back into the national contingent after almost three years of absence.

Pakistan and India have already announced their squads for the continental event, while Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are yet to name their contingent.

It is pertinent to mention here that the 15th edition of the Asia Cup will kick start on August 27 as the hosts Sri Lanka square off against Afghanistan in the curtain-raiser.

Shakib Al Hasan to lead Bangladesh in Asia Cup, ICC T20 World Cup 2022

DHAKA: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday named their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan to lead Bangladesh in the forthcoming Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

Shakib, who was recently given an ultimatum by the BCB for his collaboration with a betting site, has now been handed over the leadership role by the cricket board for the upcoming major assignments – Asia Cup and T20 World Cup.

The star all-rounder responded to the concerns raised by the BCB and withdrew from his endorsement with the allegedly illegal site.

“Shakib has informed us shortly before [now] that he has terminated the contract with the company. He said that all social media posts about that sponsorship will be deleted,” BCB’s cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus said.

Following his appointment as a new T20I captain, Shakib will also lead Bangladesh in the scheduled tri-series against Pakistan and New Zealand ahead of the T20 World Cup.

It is pertinent to mention here that the BCB is likely to announce the T20I squad for the Asia Cup on August 13 (today).

Kohli, Rahul return as India announce squad for Asia Cup 2022

MUMBAI: India’s top batter Virat Kohli and vice-captain KL Rahul returned as India have announced a 15-member T20I squad under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee announced the squad for the forthcoming Asian event. Following a back injury, India’s ace pacer – Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the tournament.

Earlier, Kohli asked for rest in the aftermath of his poor form, whereas, Rahul contracted Covid-19 at NCA while he underwent a recovery after a sports hernia operation.

Taking to Twitter, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for this year’s Asia Cup, scheduled to commence on August 27 in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

It is pertinent to mention here that Asia Cup 2022, which features six teams, will commence on August 27 as the hosts Sri Lanka will take on Afghanistan in the curtain raiser. Arch-rivals India and Pakistan will lock horns in the blockbuster encounter on August 28.

Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of Asia Cup 2022 with a back injury: Reports

MUMBAI: India’s ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 due to a back injury, Indian media reported.

According to the details, India’s senior pacer Bumrah, who last played an away ODI series against England, is likely to miss the upcoming Asia Cup as a result of a gruelling back injury which would require some time to heal.

 

Reports further suggest that the Indian squad for the Asian event will be announced on Monday but there is no clarity if the announcement will be made on the same day.

“Jasprit Bumrah has a back injury and will not play in the Asia Cup. He is our main bowler and we would like him to be back in action before T20 World Cup. We can’t risk him in Asia Cup and the injury could aggravate,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

It is pertinent to mention here that Bumrah is currently enjoying vacations with his family in the United States. His injury is considered a major setback for the defending champions while the young pacer Avesh Khan is likely to replace the veteran in the continental event.

‘Ready to take any batting position as per team’s requirement’ Shadab

LAHORE: Pakistan all-rounder and national team’s vice-captain Shadab Khan expressed his readiness to take any position in the batting order that suited the team’s balance and requirements as the Green shirts have been undergoing preparations for the upcoming overseas tasks.

Ahead of the team’s busy schedule starting with three 50-over matches against the Netherlands followed by Asia Cup 2022, Shadab stated the ODI series would be of great importance as it would earn the team crucial points in ICC Cricket World Cup Super League Standings.

“One-day series is crucial. We will enter the field with our best preparation,” he said.

While responding to a question related to the Pakistan team’s preparation for the blockbuster contest against India in the forthcoming Asia Cup on August 28, Shadab said the team would take the field with a winning spirit.

“As a team, we always enter the ground with a winning mindset, we will do the same in the match (against India),” he stated.

Talking about his batting position in the team the all-rounder revealed that he could bat at any number even as an opener provided what suits best for the team.

” I’m ready to bat at any number depending upon the team’s requirement,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan will play a three-match away ODI series against the Netherlands from August 16 to 21. The side will depart for Amsterdam in the wee hours of Friday, August 12.
