Babar will play the role, Peshawar Zalmi want: Inzamam

KARACHI: Peshawar Zalmi’s honorary President Inzamam-ul-Haq has expressed his complete faith in the new skipper, Babar Azam, saying he will definitely fulfil the role which is required by the team.

Babar, who is the latest edition to the Peshawar Zalmi squad, will lead the side in the upcoming eighth edition of the Pakistan Super League, starting from February 13.

“With each passing Babar’s performance is getting better and better,” said Inzamam while speaking to the media during Peshawar Zalmi’s practice session, here on Friday.

“Every player no matter how great he is has his own weak links and sometimes these minor flaws remain intact throughout his career” he added.

Inzamam, however, heaped praises on Babar for his solid batting roots and termed him the best batter in every format.

“He fits in the role that we want, that is why he is picked by the Peshawar Zalmi,” he maintained.

Pakistan’s all-format skipper and Peshawar Zalmi’s incumbent captain, is the highest run-getter in the PSL with 2413 runs in 38 matches, averaging a whopping 42.33.

It is pertinent to mention PSL season 8 will kick off in Multan with a grand opening ceremony match followed by the inaugural match between defending champions Lahore Qalandars and 2021 champions Multan Sultans.

Peshawar Zalmi, on the other hand, will play their first game on February 14 against Imad Wasim-led Karachi Kings at National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi.

Babar excited to captain sports minister Wahab in PSL 8

LAHORE: Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam is eager to command Punjab’s caretaker minister Wahab Riaz in the upcoming edition of the Pakistan Super League.

Babar will represent Peshawar Zalmi for the first time in the PSL, that too as a captain, whereas, left-arm pacer Wahab, who was recently appointed as sports minister in Punjab’s caretaker government, has been spearheading the franchise’s bowling attack since the tournament’s inception in 2016.

Talking to the latest edition of the PCB podcast Babar had a funny take at Wahab playing alongside him for the Zalmi besides being an office-bearer in Punjab’s interim government.

“I’m very excited,” he said on leading the provincial minister in PSL season 8. “We’ll try to go along well but it will be imperative to keep a tight rein on the minister” he quipped on a lighter note.

Meanwhile, Babar, who has the most runs (2,413) in the tournament’s history also offered his gratitude to his previous PSL franchise Karachi Kings, especially the President and CEO ARY Digital Network Mr. Salman Iqbal for supporting him throughout his PSL journey.

“I want to thank Karachi here for supporting me and making me play for the past six years especially Salman Bhai helped me a lot,” he expressed.

He added: “Every HBL PSL edition is super exciting for me because of its competitive nature. There is a different challenge each year as the players with whom you share the Pakistan dressing room all year become your opponents.

“A new franchise, and a new season, this HBL PSL edition holds added significance for me and I am looking forward to making a good start in this journey.

“Sharing the dressing room with different players throughout – one season with Islamabad United and six seasons with Karachi Kings – has helped me a lot. You learn a great deal when you interact with other players, getting to know about their mindset, training regime and the way they handle different situations.

“It is a dream for me to score a century in the HBL PSL as I already have two T20I centuries and a few more in different leagues. I am positive about achieving the three-figure mark in this HBL PSL, and hoping the right time comes soon for a big score.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Super League season 8 will take place from February 13 to March 19 in Multan, Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.

“You are your own magic,” wrote Babar as he shared an elegant picture of him with the ICC silverware.

Notably, the Pakistan captain, who headlined the ICC Awards 2022, received the two coveted trophies from the PCB management committee chair and ICC Director Najam Sethi at Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

Babar had an unforgettable year with the bat in Tests as he was the only player to breach the 2000-run mark in the calendar year 2022. His 2598 runs from 44 matches came at an average of 54.12, which included eight centuries and 15 fifties.

The right-handed batter was equally impressive in the shorter format as the top-ranked ODI batter, who has been ruling the rankings chart since July 2021, accumulated 679 runs in nine matches.

Babar carried on his astounding form in the 50-over format and crossed the fifty-plus score eight times and converted three of those into centuries. Babar finished the year with a stunning average of 84.87.

Najam Sethi presents ICC Awards to Babar Azam

LAHORE: The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management committee Najam Sethi on Wednesday presented the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer and Sir Garfield Sobers ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year awards to Babar Azam.

Babar, who headlined the ICC Awards 2022, has now received the two coveted trophies from the PCB management committee chair and ICC Director Sethi at Gaddafi Stadium here.

Ponting heaps praises on Babar for winning double ICC Awards

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting hailed star batter Babar Azam, who bagged two major ICC men’s cricket awards, saying he is on the ‘upward curve’ and may end up as Pakistan’s ‘all-time greatest’.

Pakistan skipper Babar, who enjoyed a remarkable year with the bat in all three formats, on Thursday claimed the ICC ODI Men’s Cricketer of the Year Award before getting his hand on the most coveted Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year for 2022.

Speaking on the latest episode of The ICC Review, Ponting heaped praises on Babar, highlighting his sound foundation and adaptability as factors that contributed to his meteoric rise across each format.

“Technically, he’s very good,” said the two-time World Cup-winning captain as quoted by ICC.

“He plays spin bowling very well, he plays fast bowling really well, and he’s been able to adapt to different conditions across the world – which is what separates the great players from the good players.”

“The great players are also very strong mentally. You’ve only got to look at when he plays, how long he bats for in Test matches, how he controls the innings in one-day games, how he’s sort of got the ability to go up and down the gears as a batsman when the game and the situation needs him to.”

Ponting, however, expressed that the right-handed batter was probably not at his peak, adding that “most batters come into their prime in the start of their early thirties.”

“You’re sort of working on your game and improving your game right through to a certain point. And that for most guys is it. You look at where Steve Smith and (David) Warner and those guys have been. Steve Smith is probably playing as well as he’s ever played now, along with guys like Kane Williamson as well in their early thirties.

“So I think Babar’s still got a little bit of improvement to come, which is a pretty scary thought with what he’s been able to do, pretty much across all three formats over the last three, four years. I love watching him play. I think there’s some room for improvement, let’s hope we see it.”

Babar had an unforgettable year with the bat as he was the only player to breach the 2000-run mark in the calendar year 2022. His 2598 runs from 44 matches came at an average of 54.12, which included eight centuries and 15 fifties.

The 28-year-old, who has been ruling the ODI chart since July 2021, is in the top five rankings across each format while his consistent performances earned him a place in the ICC Test Team of the Year besides leading the ICC ODI Team of the Year for the second time in a row.

Babar’s exceptional batting class is much more than just the numbers as it came with the additional burden of captaining the side in all three formats.

Pakistan claimed 14 wins from 26 matches through 2022, including eight out of nine victories in ODIs, under Babar’s leadership. He also led his team to the T20 World Cup final last year.

Ponting believed Babar had a lot to improve on the captaincy front especially his ability to handle pressure in tense encounters.

“He looked like he got a little bit flustered at times at the T20 World Cup, certainly the game against India when things got really tight at the end,” said Ponting while admitting “being a captain of the T20 team is never an easy thing to do.”

“I’m sure with a bit more experience under his belt, like he’s done with his batting, I’m sure he’ll find the right way to lead and be a very successful captain of Pakistan,” he added.

Furthermore, the ex-Australian captain opines that the Pakistan skipper may rank among the best cricketers Pakistan has ever produced by the time he ends his career.
