Shadman’s ton gives Bangladesh lead against Zimbabwe in 2nd Test

Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam smashed a century in the second Test against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, giving the hosts a lead of 64 runs at the end of the second day with three wickets in hand.

Bangladesh were 291-7 at the close, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz (16) and Taijul Islam (5) remaining not out, in response to Zimbabwe first innings total of 227.

Shadman recorded a career-best knock of 120 and partnered with Anamul Haque in a first-wicket stand of 118 runs, only the 10th time that Bangladesh’s openers had passed the 100-run mark in Tests.

Despite Shadman’s century, the other batters failed to exploit the dry and slow surface at Chattogram after a good start.

Anamul, who was making a comeback to the Test team after three years, scored 39.

Mominul Haque (33) and Mushfiqur Rahim (40) have also struggled to convert good starts into big scores.

Mushfiqur, who failed to pass the 50-run mark in the past 12 innings, was run out by Wessly Madhevere.

Bangladesh were 259-3 at one point, but then lost their next four wickets for 20 runs, thanks to Zimbabwe Vincent Masekesa.

Masekesa, debutant leg-spinner, took three wickets, including those of Bangladesh’s captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and wicketkeeper batter Jaker Ali.

Zimbabwe were earlier dismissed on their overnight score of 227.

Resuming with one wicket in hand, their innings was wrapped up with Taijul’s first ball of the second day.

Taijul finished with figures of 6-60.

Zimbabwe are 1-0 up against Bangladesh in the two-Test series after winning the opener in Sylhet by three wickets.

Bangladesh edge Zimbabwe to take an unassailable lead in T20I series

CHITTAGONG: Towhid Hridoy’s blistering half-century, followed by a combined bowling effort led Bangladesh to beat Zimbabwe by nine runs in the third T20I of the five-match series here on Tuesday.

The narrow victory in the third T20I meant that the home side claimed the series with a decisive 3-0 lead and two matches to spare.

Put into bat first, Bangladesh registered a formidable total of 165/5 in the allotted 20 overs at the back of a crucial fourth-wicket partnership between Hridoy and Jaker Ali.

The hosts, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost two wickets, Litton Das (12) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (6), inside the batting powerplay with just 29 runs on the board.

Following the early debacle, opener Tanzid Hasan put together a cautious partnership with Hridoy.

They added 41 runs for the third wicket before Hasan fell victim to Faraz Akram in the ninth over. He scored 21 off 22 deliveries, hitting one boundary and a six.

Hridoy was joined by wicketkeeper batter Jaker in the middle with the scoreboard reading 80/3 in nine overs.

The duo drove Bangladesh out of trouble and into a dominant position with a sensational partnership.

They dominated the Zimbabwean bowlers and added 87 runs amid their stand, which spanned less than 10 overs.

Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali both perished in the penultimate over, bowled by Blessing Muzarabani, who returned brilliant figures of 3/14 in his four overs.

Hridoy remained the top scorer for Bangladesh with a 38-ball 57 with the help of three boundaries and two sixes while Jaker made 44 off 34, hitting the same number of boundaries.

Set to chase 166, Zimbabwe fell narrowly short of pulling off a miraculous victory, which momentarily seemed possible during Faraz Akram’s late onslaught.

The touring side, after a dismal start, lost wickets at regular intervals and had consequently slipped to 91/8 in 14.1 overs.

However, Akram, coming out to bat at No.10, Faraz put on an astounding 54-run partnership with Wellington Masakadza to keep Zimbabwe in the hunt.

Zimbabwe then needed 21 runs off the final over but Mohammad Saifuddin castled Masakadza on the first delivery to put Bangladesh on top.

Zimbabwe’s No.11 Muzarabani then hit Saifuddin for two consecutive boundaries but he only managed one on the next two deliveries as the touring side needed 12 off the final delivery.

Faraz finished at an unbeaten 34 off 19 balls, the highest by a Zimbabwe batter at number 10.

Saifudding led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with 3/42, followed by Rishad Hossain, who claimed 2/38 while Mahmudullah, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Taskin Ahmed and Tanzim Islam chipped in with a wicket each.

Taskin, Tanzid propel Bangladesh to beat Zimbabwe in T20I series opener

Debutant opener Tanzid Hasan hit an unbeaten 67 after Taskin Ahmed’s 3/14 and guided Bangladesh to an eight-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the first T20I of the five-match series in Chittagong.

The hosts raced to 126-2 in under 16 overs after bowling out Zimbabwe for 124, with Towhid Hridoy finishing unbeaten on 33.

Tanzid smashed eight fours and two sixes in his 47-ball maiden T20I, lofting Luke Jongwe over mid-off for a boundary to complete the match.

“Everyone played well today… but we can still learn from this game and come back well in the next match,” said Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.

“Last couple of days, we trained very hard, and I hope that Tanzid continues his form.”

A record stand by Clive Madande and Wellington Masakadza earlier helped Zimbabwe recover from an early collapse that left the tourists languishing on 41-7.

The pair put on 75 runs together for Zimbabwe’s highest eighth-wicket partnership.

Taskin Ahmed bowled Madande for 43 off 39 balls to break the stand, but Masakadza (34) stayed at the crease until he was run out on the last ball of the innings.

Put into bat first, Zimbabwe lost Craig Ervine for a duck in the second over.

Mohammad Saifuddin then forced debutant fellow opener Joylord Gumbie (17) to give a catch to Taskin at fine leg.

Mahedi Hasan’s next over saw Brian Bennett run out for 16 with skipper Sikandar Raza out leg before first-ball.

Taskin also sent back Sean Williams and Ryan Burl, both of them also going for golden ducks to make it three in the innings, off back-to-back deliveries in the following over, and Saifuddin dismissed Luke Jongwe for two.

“A lot of seniors went missing, we depend heavily on them in batting and they missed out,” said Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza.

“But hopefully we’ll get back better in the next game.”

Madande was given leg before off Saifuddin on 28 but the decision was reversed after review.

Chittagong hosts the second match of the series between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe on Sunday.

The series is Bangladesh’s last before next month’s T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States and West Indies.
