Hasan Nawaz reveals how his sister helped shape his cricket journey

Pakistan middle-order batter Hasan Nawaz has opened up about his cricketing journey, initial struggles, and highlighted the major role his sister played in shaping his future in the sport.

Speaking candidly on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) YouTube channel in an interview, Hasan shared insights into his early struggles in the sport.

“Before participating in the Kashmir Premier League (KPL), I had not played PCB’s U-16 or U-19 cricket. I came into the spotlight after our team clinched the tournament’s title,” he recalled.

“Playing for the Pakistan team still feels like a dream. My sister called me to Islamabad because she said it’s difficult to play cricket in Layyah [a remote city in Punjab]. I came to the capital in 2018 and lived alongside my sister for five years,” Hasan Nawaz added.

“Initially, my sister bought me a cricket bag and got me admitted to a cricketing academy. She would also drop me off there and pick me up from the academy. So, she played a major part in my life and cricketing journey,” the middle-order batter revealed.

The 22-year-old also highlighted his career-threatening injury in domestic cricket, praising his sister for helping him during his challenging time.

“My sister also helped me in my operation, and I stayed at her house. At that time, my name came to the limelight because I had come back from playing KPL, and people had started recognizing me.”

“It feels really very good when you earn for what you work hard. My first series against New Zealand did not go well, and I have learned a lot from it,” he said.

The right-handed batter made his debut as an opener for Pakistan in the T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year. During the third match of the series, Hasan Nawaz shattered Pakistan’s record for the fastest century in T20Is.

In doing so, he surpassed ace batter Babar Azam’s previous record of a 49-ball century, which he had achieved against South Africa in 2021.

“I felt really happy at that time because if you do well for Pakistan, you feel happy, and I am still going through the phase of learning,” he concluded while recalling his memorable century.

Mike Hesson breaks silence on Babar Azam’s wicket-keeping role

KARACHI: Pakistan’s Head Coach Mike Hesson has opened up on the role of ace batter Babar Azam in the T20I side amid the speculation regarding his wicket-keeping role.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the Pakistan training camp, Hesson clarified the speculations regarding Babar Azam.

Recent media reports have claimed that Babar Azam has been offered a role as a wicketkeeper in a bid to secure his place in the team.

“Babar Azam is not being considered as a wicketkeeping option. There’s been a lot of chatter around this, but Babar is working to secure his place in the side as an opening batter,” he explained.

“There has been no talk with Babar regarding the wicket-keeping role. If he [Babar] could secure his place in the team, he would play alongside Fakhar Zaman or Saim Ayub,” he added.

The newly appointed coach emphasized the needs of modern-day cricket, stressing the need for an aggressive approach.

“No player has been instructed to play with a strike rate of 150. We [Pakistan team] are lagging behind in T20 cricket due to our batting. The players have to play with intent in modern-day cricket,” he concluded.

It is worth noting that Babar Azam is not part of the T20I squad selected for the upcoming series against Bangladesh. The top-order batter, however, has been called to the training camp alongside Naseem Shah, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Wasim Jr.

The right-handed batter last played for Pakistan in the shorter format against South Africa in 2024. Consequently, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were axed from the T20I side amid concerns regarding the adaptability of modern-day cricket.

Shanto dropped as Bangladesh names squad for Sri Lanka T20Is

Bangladesh has named a 16-member squad for the three-match series against Sri Lanka, with former captain Najmul Hossain Shanto left out of the team.

The tigers have made five changes to their squad that have previously faced Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Shanto, who featured in one of only six T20Is played against Pakistan and UAE, has been omitted following his concerning form in the shortest format.

The left-handed batter, who enjoyed a rich vein of form in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka, struggled to find his rhythm in T20Is throughout 2024. The top-order batter only averaged 18.84 in 21 T20Is with just a single half-century.

Opening batter Mohammad Naim has been included in the squad in place of Najmul Hossain Shanto, while experienced pacers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman are also included after recovering from injuries.

All-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin was among the notable inclusions in the Bangladesh squad who earned a recall after more than a year. He is added to the back of his strong performances in Bangladesh’s premier domestic white-ball competitions.

Bangladesh has a busy schedule ahead, with three T20Is against Sri Lanka and Pakistan before the 2025 Asia Cup.

The series against Sri Lanka will commence in Bangladesh on July 10 in Pallekele, followed by the second T20I on July 13 in Dambulla. The final match of the series will be played on July 16 in Colombo.

Bangladesh squad:

Litton Das (capt, wk), Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain Emon, Mohammad Naim, Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali, Shamim Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rishad Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mohammad Saifuddin.

Bangladesh’s dramatic collapse hands Sri Lanka dominant win in series opener

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka secured a resounding 77-run victory over Bangladesh to go 1-0 up in the opening match of the One-Day International (ODI) series here at the R Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday.

Chasing a 245-run target, Bangladesh were bundled out for just 167 runs in 35.5 overs.

Bangladesh were cruising at one stage as the scorecard read 100 in the 16th over. However, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s wicket on the third ball of the over triggered a humiliating collapse for the Tigers.

Ultimately, Bangladesh lost seven wickets for five runs in the span of just five overs.

Bangladesh lost their debutant Parvez Hossain Emon early in the chase, whose ephemeral 13 runs of 16 balls ended in the fourth over.

However, Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 71-run partnership at a run-a-ball steadied the visitors in the run chase, bringing the score to 100 in 16 overs.

Shanto’s (23) wicket sparked a collapse that the Tigers could never recover from. Soon after Litton Das (0), Towhid Hridoy (1), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (0) went in quick succession as wickets fell in heaps.

Tanzid Hasan remained the top scorer with his 62 off 61 deliveries, laced with nine fours and a six, while lower-order batter Jaker Ali scored 51 off 64 balls, with the aid of four boundaries and four maximums.

For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga was the standout bowler, picking up four wickets and giving away just 10 runs in 7.5 overs. Kamindu Mendis supported him well with three scalps in five overs.

With an explosive spell, Wanindu Hasaranga also achieved the milestone of reaching 100 ODI wickets in 64 matches.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 244 runs in 49.2 overs.

Skipper Charith Asalanka starred with the bat, scoring his fifth ODI hundred, rescuing the Islanders from a precarious 29-3 in 6.1 overs.

The left-hander smashed four sixes and half a dozen fours on his way to 106 off 123 balls.

For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed took four wickets while Tanzim Hasan Sakib bagged three wickets.

The second ODI of the three-match series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be played on 5 July at the same venue.

THIS player likely to replace Shadab Khan as T20I vice-captain: reports

Pakistan wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Haris is set to replace Shadab Khan as the national team’s vice-captain for the Bangladesh T20I series.

Shadab Khan, who was appointed as Pakistan’s T20I vice-captain earlier this year, has reportedly been struggling with persistent discomfort in his shoulder.

After medical evaluation, surgery was deemed necessary, and Shadab is now likely to travel to the UK to have the procedure done.

Mohammad Haris, who has represented Pakistan in 17 T20Is, has vast leadership experience. The 24-year-old has captained both the Pakistan Shaheens and the Pakistan A team.

Moreover, Pakistan also won the Emerging Asia Cup in 2023 under Mohammad Haris’ captaincy, defeating arch-rivals India in the final.

It’s worth noting that Pakistan gears up for their upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, scheduled to begin on July 20 in Dhaka.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to announce the squad for the series later this week, with preparations set to begin on July 7 in Karachi.

A training camp will be held at the National Bank Stadium to fine-tune the squad ahead of the short tour.

Notably, the star trio of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi, all rested for the previous home series against Bangladesh, are reportedly set to remain on the sidelines, with no clear timeline for their return.

Pakistan will arrive in Dhaka on July 16 before facing the Bangladesh cricket team in the first T20I on Sunday, July 20.

The second and third T20Is are scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, and Thursday, July 24, respectively. All three matches will take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

The two teams recently faced each other in a three-match T20I series at the Gaddafi Stadium, where Pakistan achieved a clean sweep against Bangladesh.

Shadab Khan starred in the opening match of the series as Pakistan clinched victory over Bangladesh by 37 runs.

The all-rounder gave an all-round performance, scoring 48 off 25 and taking two crucial wickets to secure an emphatic win for the Green Shirts.
