BCCI turns down request to host Women’s T20 World Cup

BCCI turns down request to host Women’s T20 World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rejected the offer by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to host the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 amid political unrest in Bangladesh.

The upcoming tournament is originally scheduled to be played in Bangladesh in October, but due to the ongoing unrest in the country, the ICC is considering relocating the tournament.

Due to travel advisories from multiple countries advising against travel to Bangladesh, the ICC asked India to host the tournament. However, the request was declined by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.

“They [ICC] have asked us if we would conduct the [Women’s T20] World Cup. I have categorically said no,” Shah told the Times of India.

“We’re in the monsoon and on top of that we will host the Women’s ODI World Cup next year. I don’t want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups.”

After India rejected the offer, ICC is considering  Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the potential alternative hosts.

For the unversed, the unrest in Bangladesh led to the dethroning of the Sheikh Hasina government.

The new interim government is making an effort to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as per schedule, but the governments of participating teams are reluctant to send their teams to Bangladesh.

“The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB], their security agencies and our own independent security consultants,” an ICC statement said. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants.”

Pakistan, Bangladesh to play Karachi Test without spectators

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday announced that the second Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh, scheduled in Karachi, will be played without spectators.

The second Test is scheduled to be played from 30 August to 3 September, however, due to the ongoing construction work in the National Bank Stadium, the match will be played with empty stands.

“In light of ongoing construction work at the National Bank Stadium as part of preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made the difficult decision to hold the second Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh, scheduled from 30 August to 3 September, without spectators in attendance,” the cricket board said in a statement.

“We understand the vital role that our passionate spectators play in cricket, providing inspiration and motivation to our players.

“However, the health and safety of our fans is our utmost priority. After careful consideration of all available options, we have decided that the safest course of action is to hold the second Test in front of an empty stadium.”

The PCB also announced that the ticket sales have been stopped, however, the fans, who have already grabbed their passes will get a refund.

“As a result of this decision, ticket sales have been suspended with immediate effect. Fans who have already purchased tickets will receive a full refund automatically, with the amount credited to the account details provided at the time of purchase.

“While we deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause, we want to assure our valued fans that the ongoing stadium upgrades are aimed at enhancing their experience.

“The renovations are part of our commitment to making the venue more spectator-friendly and preparing it for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be the first ICC event hosted in Pakistan since 1996.”

BCCI reveals revised schedule of Bangladesh, England home series

BCCI reveals revised schedule of Bangladesh, England home series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the updated schedule for the upcoming home season, featuring series against Bangladesh and England.

The season will commence with a two-match Test series against Bangladesh on September 19. The Test series will go on as per schedule but the venues for some of the white-ball fixtures have been changed.

The first T20I between India and Bangladesh on 6 December was originally planned to take place at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, but it has been moved to Gwalior due to the ongoing construction at the previous venue.

“The first T20I between India and Bangladesh, initially set to be held in Dharamsala on 6th October 2024, will now take place in Gwalior owing to upgrades and renovation work being carried out by the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in the dressing rooms,” the board said in a release.

The upcoming match in Gwalior is set to take place at the newly constructed Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium.

This match marks the return of international cricket to the city after more than a decade, following the memorable India-South Africa ODI in 2010.

Legendary Sachin Tendulkar made history in that game by becoming the first male cricketer to score a double century in ODIs.

The venues for the first and second T20I between India and England scheduled for 22 and 25 January were swapped. This change came after a request from the Kolkata Police to the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

“The Board further announces a swap in the venues of the first and second T20Is against England. Chennai, originally scheduled to host the first T20I, will now host the second, while Kolkata will host the opening T20I instead of the second, as announced earlier.

“The dates for the first T20I (22nd January 2025) and the second T20I (25th January 2025) remain the same. The venue change was necessitated following a request from Kolkata Police to the Cricket Association of Bengal regarding their prior Republic Day commitments and obligations.”

Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss upcoming Test series against Bangladesh

India pace spearhead bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is likely to miss the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh as a part of the management’s plan to carefully handle his workload and ensure his long-term fitness and performance.

Currently, Bumrah is on vacation and has not been involved in any cricketing action since leading India to their second ICC World Cup title during the 2024 tournament held in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA).

The management is considering giving him further rest from the two-match series against Bangladesh to keep him fresh for the important series and the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The Indian cricket team is scheduled to play ten Test matches in the next four matches, including five against Australia and Bumrah is a key cog in their bowling line-up, which is why he might miss the Bangladesh series.

However, the final decision will be made by the Ajjit Agarkar-led Indian selection committee. Meanwhile, experienced batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have reportedly been requested to participate in the Duleep Trophy to get the match practice before a busy Test schedule.

Jasprit Bumrah has faced numerous injuries and was unable to participate in significant events in the past, including the ICC World Cup 2022 in Australia, where India made it to the semi-finals.

LAHORE: Pakistan dropped opening batter Imam-ul-Haq from their 17-member squad for the upcoming two-match home Test series against Bangladesh, starting from 21 August.

The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) men’s national selection committee announced the squad on Wednesday for the ICC World Test Championship fixtures.

The first Test will be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from 21-25 August, while the second Test will be held from 30 August-3 September in Karachi.

Meanwhile, the home team’s training camp will commence at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on 11 August and will be supervised by red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie and assistant coach Azhar Mahmood.

The Bangladesh cricket team is scheduled to arrive in Islamabad in the wee hours of 17 August and is expected to train in the same afternoon.

Shan Masood will continue to lead the Test team, while left-handed middle-order batter Saud Shakeel has been appointed as the new vice-captain of Pakistan’s red-ball team.

Saud takes over from Shaheen Shah Afridi as part of the selectors’ strategic decision that is aimed at managing Pakistan’s lead fast bowler’s workload management during a busy season.

It’s worth noting that the Pakistan cricket team is scheduled to play nine Tests, 14 T20Is and, at least, 17 ODIs during the period from 21 August 2024 to 5 April 2025.

Pakistan’s 17-member Test squad for Bangladesh series features 13 players, who were involved in the last series against Australia in December/January 2023-24.

Uncapped Mohammad Huraira and Kamran Ghulam as well as Test player Mohammad Ali have been rewarded for their consistent performances in the domestic circuit as well as for Pakistan Shaheens.

Meanwhile, pace sensation Naseem Shah is returning to the red-ball side after a 13-month hiatus.

Kamran Ghulam aggregated 1,025 runs in 11 first-class matches in the 2023-24 season and then scored 148 runs in three innings against Bangladesh ‘A’ in Darwin last month, including 100 not out in the first match.

He was part of the squad for the home series against New Zealand in December/January 2022-23 but didn’t feature in the drawn two-match series.

Fast bowler Mohammad Ali has been recalled after last featuring in the opening two Tests against England in 2022.

He took 24 wickets in six first-class matches in the 2022-23 season, followed by 47 wickets in 14 first-class matches in the 2023-24 season.

In the two four-day matches against Bangladesh ‘A’ in Darwin, Ali took nine wickets, including six for 63 in the second innings of the second match.

Meanwhile, Huraira stroked a sparkling double-century against Bangladesh ‘A’ in Darwin last month. He also had a stellar last couple of first-class seasons.

In the 2022-23 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Huraira was the only batter to break the 1,000-run barrier, aggregating 1,024 runs in 11 matches for Northern.

In the 2023-24 first-class season, the 22-year-old right-hander scored 961 runs in 14 matches for the Faisalabad Region and Higher Education Commission (HEC).

He was part of the squad for the tour to Sri Lanka in July 2023 but didn’t feature in the series, which Pakistan won by 2-0.

Imam-ul-Haq, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali (injured), Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Jnr (injured), Noman Ali and Sajid Khan were the players who failed to retain their places in the Test side.

Imam-ul-Haq managed 57 runs in two Tests against Sri Lanka and then scored 94 runs in the Perth and Melbourne Tests, Faheem took one wicket in the Perth Test, Sajid claimed three wickets in the Sydney Test, while Nawaz and Noman didn’t play in any of the Tests.

WATCH: Shakib Al Hasan confronted by Bangladesh fans amid political unrest

Bangladesh cricket fans lambasted former captain Shakib Al Hasan, a member of parliament belonging to Sheikh Hasina Wazed’s party, for keeping mum during the recent political unrest in the country.

Shakib Al Hasan, who is currently in Canada to play the GT20 league, was confronted by Bangladeshi fans who chanted slogans against him. The all-rounder did not respond and walked away silently.

https://a-sports.tv/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Fans-confront-Shakib-Al-Hasan-amid-GT20-Canada.mp4

Shakib was elected a member of the National Assembly on a ticket of the Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina Wazed.

Earlier in a similar incident, Shakib Al Hasan landed in hot water due to being ‘tight-lipped’ on the recent anarchy in the South Asian country.

He was recently questioned about it by a fan in the GT20 Canada 2024 but Shakib, in response, asked, “What did you do for the country?” His remarks further enraged the cricket fans.

When probed about the incident, the Chairman of the Cricket Operations Committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board Mohammed Jalal Yunus asserted that he was unaware before stating that Shakib should not have made such comments.

“I haven’t seen the video, so it wouldn’t be right for me to comment. However, what he did was certainly not correct. Everyone has contributions in different areas, and questioning Shakib’s contributions wasn’t appropriate.” Jalal said.

Mashrafe Mortaza’s residence set on fire

On Monday, angry demonstrators set fire to the home of former captain Mashrafe Mortaza, a former Khulna Division member of parliament belonging to the Awami League.

He had secured the seat in Bangladesh’s general elections earlier this year for the second time in a row as an Awami League candidate,. Following Sheikh Hasina Wazed’s departure from the nation, demonstrators damaged and set fire to Mashrafe Mortaza’s home.
