Maxwell’s record-breaking 154* guides Stars to a thumping victory in BBL

MELBOURNE: Glenn Maxwell – Melbourne Stars skipper went berserk to smash the highest individual score in Big Bash League (BBL) history to guide the Stars to a crushing victory over Hobart Hurricanes, here on Wednesday.

Batting first, the Stars recorded the highest-ever BBL score; by amassing 273/2 in the quota of 20 overs, thanks to Maxwell’s record-breaking 154*. The 33-years-old faced just 64 deliveries; smoking 22 boundaries and four sixes.

Marcus Stoinis too scored an unbeaten 75 to pile on the misery for the Hurricanes. He faced just 31 balls and smashed 10 boundaries including six sixes.

Following this remarkable feat by Maxwell and Stoinis, the Stars finished at the highest BBL score, that is 273/2 in 20 overs; setting a massive target for the Hurricanes.

For the Hurricanes, Josh Kann and Jordan Thompson managed to take one wicket apiece.

Set to chase 274 in 20 overs, the Hurricanes could only score 167/6 in the allotted overs. Despite Ben McDermott’s quick 55 and D’Arcy Short’s 41, the Hurricanes fell way short in the run chase; losing the match by a massive margin of 106 runs.

For the Stars, Brody Couch starred with the ball; taking three wickets, while Beau Webster, Tom O’Connell, and Clint Hinchliffe struck out a batter each.

Boyce hat-trick in vain as Thunder clinch victory by one run in BBL

MELBOURNE: Cameron Boyce’s record-breaking hat-trick went in vain as Sydney Thunder defeated Melbourne Renegades by one run in the 55th match of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL).

Gurinder Sandhu held his nerve calm to successfully defend nine runs in the final over; leaking only seven runs including a six. He also claimed three wickets in the final over.

Set to chase 171, Renegades’ captain – Aaron Finch fought hard with his magnificent batting display; scoring 82 runs off 64 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and two sixes. However, remained unable to pull off the victory as the batter departed on the third delivery of the final over while trying to slog the ball over the midwicket boundary.

Apart from the skipper, only Unmukt Chand could manage to contribute significantly with his 29, while the rest of the batters dismissed cheaply.

For the Thunder, Sandhu bagged three wickets, while Tanveer Sangha took two. Daniel Sams, on the other hand, made one scalp.

Batting first, the Thunder had a brilliant start to their innings as the openers provided a solid 80-runs partnership for the first wicket until Boyce produced a remarkable turnaround; bagging four wickets in four balls including Alex Hales, who scored a brilliant 44 off just 22 balls, laced with seven boundaries and a six.

As a result, the Thunder slipped from 80/0 to 85/4. Soon after, Boyce also dismissed Matthew Gikes for two to dent the Thunder’s position in the match. Usman Khawaja, on the other hand, put on a stellar batting display to anchor the inning on his BBL return, the batter scored an astonishing 77 off 51 balls, including eight boundaries and a six.

Following Khawaja’s departure, Nathan McAndrew’s late cameo guided the Thunder to 170/8 in the allotted 20 overs.

For the Renegades, Boyce starred; taking a five-fer, while Josh Lalor and Zak Evans picked one wicket apiece.

Rogers’ brilliance guide Hurricanes to victory in BBL

MELBOURNE: Hobart Hurricanes’ bowler Tom Rogers returned with a scintillating bowling figure of 3/35 to help the Hurricanes beat Melbourne Renegades by six runs in the 53rd match of the ongoing Big Bash League.

Set to chase 183, the Renegades fell six runs short despite Aaron Finch’s 75 as the Hurricanes bowlers held their nerves calm to restrict the home side for 176 in the allotted 20 overs.

At the toss, the Hurricanes elected to bat first. However, the side could not get off to an ideal start as they lost their first wicket for a mere 12 runs. Caleb Jewell and Matthew Wade then anchored the innings with a brilliant 67-runs partnership. The pair took the side to 79 in the 11th over before Jewell departed. He scored 35 off 28 balls and smoked three boundaries and a six.

Soon after, Wade also walked back to the pavilion after scoring 48; missing his half-century by just two runs. The left-handed batter faced 39 deliveries and hit four boundaries and a six.

Tim David’s late onslaught took the Hurricanes to 182/5 in their quota of 20 overs. David smashed a quickfire 46 off just 20 balls, laced with two boundaries and four sixes.

For the Renegades, Cameron Boyce and Josh Lalor bagged two wickets each, while Zak Evans made one scalp.

Renegades, set to chase 183, had a decent start to their innings as the opening pair of Finch James Seymour provided a 37-runs opening stand. Seymour, who was sailing the ball all over the park perished after scoring a quick 24 off 13 balls and smashed four boundaries and a six.

Following his departure, Finch then partnered with Shaun Marsh and the pair put on a century partnership for the second wicket. The Renegades appeared to be in a solid position but, Marsh perished after scoring a magnificent half-century. He scored 51 off 38 balls.

With the Marsh’s departure, the Renegades began to lose wickets at an alarming rate as the top-scorer for the side – Finch also walked back to the pavilion after scoring 75 off 52 balls. He smoked seven boundaries and a maximum, but, could not guide the Renegades to the victory.

For the Hurricanes, Rogers starred with the ball; taking three wickets, while Sandeep Lamichhane took two. Riley Meredith, on the other hand, bagged one wicket.

Marsh’s heroics guide Scorchers to a comfortable victory in BBL

MELBOURNE: Mitchell Marsh’s brilliant 59 trumped Max Bryant’s 81 as Perth Scorchers sealed a thumping victory over Brisbane Heat in the 52nd match of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL), here on Monday.

Set to chase 156, the Scorchers had a decent start to their innings as the openers provided a fair 45-runs opening stand, but, the side soon slipped to 48/2 as both the openers – Kurtis Paterson and Josh Inglis walked back to the pavilion in a space of six deliveries.

Paterson scored 26 off 20, while Inglis only managed to score 18. Following their departure, Marsh and Colin Munro put on a handy 84-runs partnership to cement the table-toppers position in the run chase.

Marsh scored a quickfire 59 off just 34 balls, laced with six boundaries and three sixes, while Munro approached rather defensively as the batter scored 24 off 28; smashing two boundaries including a six.

Ashton Turner (18*) and Aaron Hardie (6*) finished the run-chase for the Scorchers in the 19th over.

For the Heat, Mitchell Swepson bagged two wickets, while Matthew Kuhnemann and Michael Neser claimed one wicket each.

Batting first, the Heat batters struggled throughout the innings, and apart from Bryant, none of their batters could able to make an impact with the bat. The side kept losing the wickets at a consistent rate as their batters kept departing after scoring cheaply.

Bryant, on the other hand, stood firm and played a valiant inning of 81. He faced 56 balls; smoking seven boundaries and four sixes. With the late contribution from Jimmy Peirson, the Heat finished at 155/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Peirson scored a quickfire 31 off 19 balls, including a boundary and two sixes.

For the Scorchers, Jason Behrendroff and Peter Hatzoglou took two wickets each, while Andrew Tye, Ashton Agar, and Marsh made one scalp each.

For his brilliant all-round performance, Marsh was adjudged as the player of the match.

Strikers stun Sixers with an emphatic run-chase in BBL

ADELAIDE: In the 51st match of the ongoing edition of Big Bash League (BBL), the home side Adelaide Strikers sealed a stunning victory against Sydney Sixers by eight wickets, here on Monday.

The strikers chased down a target of 162 with eight wickets in hand and 15 balls to spare, thanks to their top-order batter Ian Cockbain, who scored an unbeaten 71 to power his side to their sixth victory.

Set to chase 162, the Strikers had a decent start to their innings as the openers provided a solid 45-runs stand. The duo of Matt Renshaw and Henry Hunt appeared in top-notch as the pair powered the side to 45 in the fourth over before Hunt fell victim to Ben Dwarshuis. Hunt scored a quick 15 off just nine balls, including a boundary and a six.

Renshaw then partnered with Cockbain and put on a fifty-runs partnership for the second wicket. Renshaw departed in the 10th over, soon after reaching his half-century. He scored 50 off 31 balls, including seven boundaries.

Cockbain, on the other hand, did not hold back and kept sailing the ball all over the park. He scored a fiery 71 not-out on a mere 42 balls, laced with five boundaries and four sixes. With a handy 27* from Jonathan Wells, the pair managed to seal the sixth victory for the home side in the 18th over.

For the Sixers, Dwarshuis and Hayden Kerr claimed one wicket apiece.

Batting first, the Sixers too, had a decent start to their innings as the side was 72/1 in the 10th over, but, collapsed to 83/4 in the 13th over. The fumble prevented the Sixers from amassing a massive total as the visiting side could only score 161 for the loss of seven wickets in their quota of 20 overs.

Jack Edwards scored a run-a-ball 34, followed by the top-scorer and the lone warrior with the bat for the Sixers – Justin Avendano, who scored a quickfire 52 off 29 balls, including a boundary and five sixes. His heroics, however, could not help his side to post a commendable total.

For the Strikers, Fawad Ahmed led the bowling chart with his three wickets, while Peter Siddle bagged two. Henry Thornton and Renshaw, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

Following this victory, the Strikers have strengthened their fourth position on the points table, while the Sixers remained at the second.

Stars crush Renegades with a convincing victory in BBL

MELBOURNE: In the 46th match of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL), Melbourne Stars handed a crushing defeat to Melbourne Renegades; defeating the latter by six wickets with 33 balls to spare, here on Thursday.

At the toss, Renegades’ captain – Nic Maddinson opted to bat first after the bat flipped in his favour. Batting first, the Renegades’ batters struggled throughout the innings following the scary start to the side as Pakistan’s speedster got two wickets in his opening over. As a result, none of their batters could able to go big. The side, eventually, restricted at 122/7 in the allotted 20 overs.

Jake Fraser-McGurk scored a valiant 32, but, was a touch too slow as the batter faced 39 deliveries and could only hit two boundaries. The top scorer for the Renegades today, Aaron Finch scored 45 off 44 balls, including three boundaries and a six. The rest of their batters could not even manage to score in double-figures.

For the Stars, Rauf, Adam Zampa, and Qais Ahmed claimed two wickets each, while Brody Couch made one scalp.

Set to chase a paltry 123, the Stars had a similar start to their innings; losing two wickets for a mere 15. The Stars’ skipper – Glenn Maxwell along with  Joe Burns, however, anchored the innings with a valuable 52-runs partnership for the third wicket. Burns, who was struggling to go big, departed after scoring 17 off 19 balls and could only hit one boundary.

Maxwell, on the other hand, kept going and went on to smash an astonishing half-century. The batter kept the scoreboard ticking with little to no assistance from his fellow batters. Maxwell’s heroics helped the Stars chase down 123 in the 15th over. He scored a terrific 68 off 45 balls, laced with eight boundaries and a six.

For his brilliant performance, Maxwell was adjudged as the Player of the Match.

Following this victory, the Stars have now claimed the fifth position, while the Renegades remained at the bottom.

Hurricanes end Thunder’s winning streak in a sea-saw BBL contest

MELBOURNE: Hobart Hurricanes’ combined batting and bowling effort helped the side defeat Sydney Thunder by nine runs to end the latter’s winning streak, here on Thursday.

Hurricane’s top-order batters – Matthew Wade and Caleb Jewell starred with the bat before Riley Meredith took 3/29 to assist the side to victory against the Thunder.

Batting first, the Hurricanes had an average start to their innings as the openers Ben McDermott and Jewell provided a fair 29-runs partnership before McDermott walked back to the pavilion after scoring 18.

Wade and Jewell then partnered strongly for the side. The duo batted brilliantly and added an 89-runs partnership for the second wicket. Both the batters scored magnificent half-centuries, but, Jewell could not get going as the young left-hander departed after scoring a brilliant 51. He faced 32 balls; smashing five boundaries and three sixes.

Wade, on the other hand, kept scoring runs when his side was losing wickets at an alarming rate. He batted valiantly and remained not-out for a well crafted 83 off 54 balls. He smoked 10 boundaries and two sixes.

Wade’s heroics helped the Hurricanes to post a commendable total of 177/6 in the allotted 20 overs.

For the Thunder, Gurinder Sandhu bagged two wickets, while Mohammad Hasnain, Daniel Sams, and Tanveer Sangha shared one wicket apiece.

Set to chase 178, Thunder were off to a poor start as the side lost their first wicket for a mere five runs. Last match’s hero – Alex Hales and Tanveer Sangha looked to anchor the innings following an early dismissal. The duo appeared in top-notch; adding 62 runs partnership for just 23 balls. The duo, however, could not extend their stay on the crease as Hales departed after scoring a quickfire 38 off just 17 balls, laced with seven fours and a boundary.

Following his departure, Sangha, too, soon dismissed after putting on a brief partnership with Sams. The pair could add 25 runs for the third wicket as Sangha walked back to the pavilion after scoring 31 off 19 balls, including three boundaries and a six.

Following Sangha’s dismissal, the side began to lose wickets at a consistent rate and could only score 168 despite Nathan McAndrew’s valuable 30; losing the match by just nine runs.

For the Hurricanes, Meredith and Jordan Thompson claimed three wickets each, while Sandeep Lamichhane bagged two. D’Arcy Short, on the other hand, made one scalp.

Following this victory, the Hurricanes have now moved up to the fourth position, while the Thunder remained at the second.

BRISBANE: In the 46th match of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL), Adelaide Strikers’ Rashid Khan took a six-fer, handing Brisbane Heat a crushing defeat by 71 runs, here on Wednesday.

Strikers’ Rashid, returned with a stunning match figure of 6/17 in his quota of four overs despite leaking 11 runs in his first over.

Set to chase 162, the Strikers had a poor start to their innings; losing the first two wickets for a mere 17. The openers Nathan McSweeney and Chris Lynn departed after scoring cheaply. McSweeney scored five, while Lynn managed to score seven.

Lachlan Pfeffer and Ben Duckett then anchored the innings for the home side. The pair recorded an important 45-runs partnership before Pfeffer fell unlucky; getting run out by Peter Siddle. He managed to score 23 off 24.

Following his departure, the Heat began to lose wickets at an alarming rate and slipped from 62/2 to 67/6 as Duckett too departed after top-scoring with his 24 off 18 balls.

Rashid then wrecked the Heat’s lower order and the home side soon bundled out for a skimpy 90; handing a comfortable 71-runs victory to the Strikers.

For the Strikers, Rashid bagged six wickets, while Matthew Short claimed two. Siddle, on the other hand, made one scalp.

Batting first, the Strikers’ batters provided a combined batting effort as all their batters made significant contributions before Rashid’s brief on-slaught down the order assisted the side to amass 161/4 in the allotted 20 overs.

Short scored 27, followed by the top-scorer for the Strikers – Jake Weatherald, who scored 35 off 31 balls, including one boundary and as many sixes. Rashid, on the other hand, scored a quickfire 13 off just four balls; smashing two sixes.

For the Heat, Will Prestwidge bagged two wickets, while Matthew Kuhnemann and Mujeeb Ur Rahman shared one wicket apiece.

VICTORIA: Ben Dwarshuis’s took a five-fer to help Sydney Sixers seal an emphatic victory over Melbourne Renegades by 45 runs in the 45th match of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL).

Dwarshuis returned with a stunning figure of 5/26; assisting the Sixers bowling out the Renegades for a skimpy 106, while chasing 151.

Batting first, the Sixers were off to the worst possible start; losing their first wicket for none as Josh Philippe bagged a three-ball duck. Jack Edwards and Daniel Hughes then partnered briefly; adding 44-runs to the team’s total before Hughes walked back to the pavilion after scoring just 17.

The skipper – Moises Henriques then joined Edwards at the crease and added 27 runs for the third wicket. Edwards departed in the 11th over after scoring a valiant 40 off 34 balls, including three boundaries and a six.

The side then began to lose wickets at a consistent rate as Dan Christian departed in the 17th over; scoring 22, whereas, Pakistan’s leg-spinner Shadab Khan walked back to the pavilion after scoring a quickfire 12 off seven balls; smashing two boundaries.

Henriques, on the other hand, missed his half-century and dismissed after scoring 49. He faced 35 balls and scored five boundaries and a six. Following his contribution, the Sixers, in the end, managed to post a commendable total of 150 on the scoreboard.

VICTORIA: In the previously postponed 27th match of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL), Perth Scorchers handed a crushing defeat to the struggling Melbourne Stars, here on Tuesday.

The table-toppers Scorchers edged past the Stars by a 47-runs victory, thanks to their batter Laurie Evans’ magnificent 69.

At the toss, the Scorchers’ captain – Ashton Turner elected to bat first after the bat flipped in his favour. His openers, however, failed to provide a solid start to the side; managing just a 22-runs opening partnership as Kurtis Patterson fell short to Pakistan’s speedster – Haris Rauf.

Evans and Nick Hobson then partnered strongly and provided a solid 83-runs partnership for the second wicket. The pair put their side in command before Hobson walked back to the pavilion after scoring 46 off 36 balls, including six boundaries. Evans, on the other hand, stood firm and went on to smash a brilliant half-century. He scored 69 off 46 balls, laced with two boundaries and five sixes.

The skipper Turner also chipped in down the order; scoring a quickfire 47 off 26 balls; smashing three boundaries and as many sixes. His brilliance, in the end, helped the Scorchers to post a massive total of 196/3 in the allotted 20 overs.

For the Stars, Rauf bagged two wickets, while Adam Zampa managed to make one scalp.

Set to chase 197, the Stars had even a worse start to their innings; losing their opener Nick Larkin for a combined score of one. Beau Webster and Joe Burns then anchored the innings for the Stars; adding 58-runs to the team’s total for the second wicket. Burns, however, fell short after scoring 20. He faced 17 balls and smashed two sixes.

The Stars then began to lose wickets at a consistent rate and the top-scorer for the side – Webster also departed after scoring a fighting 63 off 47 balls, laced with seven boundaries and two sixes. Following his departure, the Stars’ batting tail did little to no contribution; resulting in the side, restricted for 149/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

For the Scorchers, Matthew Kelly starred; picking four wickets, while Jason Behrendorff, Peter Hatzoglou, Andrew Tye, and Ashton Agar shared one wicket apiece.
