Champions Trophy: Gill’s century, Shami’s five-fer help India thump Bangladesh

DUBAI: Shubman Gill’s sublime century and Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul helped India beat Bangladesh by six wickets in the second match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 here at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

India comfortably chased a modest target of 229 runs, losing four wickets with 21 balls to spare.

The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill provided a solid start for Men in Blue, stitching together a 69-run stand. Sharma departed in the final over of the powerplay after scoring 41 runs in a record-breaking knock laced with seven fours.

After his departure, Virat Kohli joined Gill at the crease and formed a steady 43-run partnership to keep India afloat.

The Indian stalwart departed after scoring 22 off 38 balls, hitting only one-four. After his dismissal, two more wickets in quick succession gave Bangladesh faint hope on the score of 144/4 in 30.1 overs.

However, Bangladesh failed to make an impact with the bat and was equally sloppy in the field, dropping crucial catches and missing run-out moments at key moments.

However, Gill continued his majestic strokeplay and reached his 8th ODI century.

He and KL Rahul put on an unbeaten 87-run stand on the fifth wicket, guiding India to a convincing victory against Bangladesh.

Rahul played a composed innings, scoring 41 off 47 balls with the help of two big sixes and one elegant four, while Gill scored 101, striking nine fours and two sixes.

Rishad Hossain was the only silver lining for Bangladesh, taking two wickets for 38 in his ten overs.

Earlier, the Bangladesh team was bowled out on 228 in 49.4 overs after a clinical bowling performance from India.

After opting to bat first, Bangladesh was in early trouble, losing half their side in the powerplay.

The Indian seamers were on a roll as they dismantled the Bangladeshi top order. The Tiger’s top three, Tanzid Hasan (25), Soumya Sarkar (0), and Najmul Hossain Shanto (0), were dismissed cheaply in the first six overs.

Shami and Axar Patel jolted Bangledesh with early blows, taking two wickets in the first ten overs.

After early blows, it was expected that Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s senior duo would lift their team. However, they also perished in a short span of time on nought and five runs, respectively.

But the vital partnership between Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy brought Bangladesh back into the game. The pair added 154 runs on the sixth wicket and took their team to 189 runs after a precarious position of 35 for 5.

Ali scored a cautious knockoff 68 on 114 balls, which included four fours. He was caught by Virat Kohli of Mohammed Shami’s bowling.

Hridoy continued his good knock and scored his first ODI hundred in the 48th over. His valiant knock included two sixes and one four. He was caught (100) on Harshit Rana’s bowling after scoring a century.

Shami was on fire after returning from an injury, took a fifer and rattled the Bangladesh batting lineup. Harshit Rana was equally good, taking three wickets in his seven overs.

‘These are our best players’ Wasim Akram backs Pakistan’s Champions Trophy squad

Former pacer Wasim Akram backed the Pakistan team’s Champions Trophy squad after losing against New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opening match at National Bank Stadium Karachi on Wednesday.

Speaking on a TV show, Wasim highlighted that the current squad includes the best available players and downplayed claims of selection based on personal references.

“If you want me to be brutally honest, I can be. In our culture, we say, these are our kids, don’t criticize them.”

“But I believe these are our best players. If there was someone better, they would have been selected. People talk about ‘parchi’ (selection based on favoritism), but at this level, parchi doesn’t work,” Akram explained.

During the match, the Green Shirts suffered a significant blow as top-order batter Fakhar Zaman sustained an injury in the first over of New Zealand’s innings. He fell awkwardly while fielding, forcing him to leave the ground for medical assessment.

Though he attempted to return to the field after some time, he eventually walked off again, raising serious concerns about his fitness.

Despite the discomfort, Fakhar still came out to bat in Pakistan’s chase of 321 runs. However, he looked far from his usual fluent self, managing a scratchy 24 before getting dismissed.

Earlier today, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Fakhar Zaman could no longer participate in the Champions Trophy and named Imam-ul-Haq as his replacement.

For the unversed, the defending champions and hosts Pakistan began their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a 60-run loss against New Zealand yesterday.

Green Shirts were bowled out on 260 in 47.2 overs after New Zealand’s clinical bowling performance. Khushdil Shah scored the most with his 69 off 49 balls.

Virat Kohli set to break another Sachin Tendulkar record

DUBAI: India star batter Virat Kohli is on the brink of yet another historic milestone, with a chance to surpass the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in his team’s Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh here on Thursday.

The star batter needs just 37 more runs to become only the third player in history to reach 14,000 runs in ODIs, with Tendulkar and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara being the other two.

If Virat Kohli gets there in the match against Bangladesh, he will achieve the feat in his 286th innings—significantly faster than Sachin Tendulkar, who reached the landmark in his 350th innings during a match against Pakistan in Peshawar back in 2006.

But that’s not the only record within Kohli’s reach as he is just 90 runs away from becoming the first Indian to score 1,000 ODI runs against Bangladesh.

So far, he has hammered 910 runs in just 16 matches against the Tigers, with five centuries and three fifties to his name.

It’s worth noting that after today’s match against Bangladesh, Team India will face arch-rivals and hosts Pakistan in the much-awaited Champions Trophy clash on 23 February.

Meanwhile, their final group stage match is scheduled against New Zealand on 2 March.

Rohit Sharma on the verge of major ODI milestone in Champions Trophy

DUBAI: India captain Rohit Sharma is on the verge of achieving a major ODI milestone during the second match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh here at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Rohit is just 12 runs away from entering the elite 11,000-run club in ODIs, and if he gets there against Bangladesh in India’s Champions Trophy opener, he’ll become the second-fastest to reach the milestone in terms of innings.

Currently sitting at 260 innings in ODIs, Rohit is on the verge of surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, who reached the landmark in 276 innings.

Only Virat Kohli has done it faster, achieving the feat in just 222 innings. Interestingly, if Rohit crosses the mark today, all three of the fastest batters to 11,000 ODI runs will be Indians—Kohli (222), Rohit (260*), and Tendulkar (276).

The milestone will also place Rohit in an exclusive club of Indian batters who have scored over 11,000 runs in the format, joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Virat Kohli.

Khushdil Shah breaks silence on ‘parchi’ chants after New Zealand loss

Pakistan all-rounder Khushdil Shah has finally spoken out about the relentless chants of “parchi parchi” (a term used to suggest favouritism in team selection) that have followed him throughout his career.

The left-hander addressed the criticism head-on after Pakistan’s 60-run loss to New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy opener in Karachi yesterday.

Despite playing a fighting knock of 69 off 49 balls in a failed chase of 321, Khushdil once again found himself on the receiving end of fan taunts.

But instead of lashing out, he chose to respond with composure, making it clear that his focus has never been on personal milestones.

“If I were playing for myself, you wouldn’t have heard those [parchi] chants today,” Khushdil Shah said while speaking to journalists in the mixed zone.

“I have never played for individual records. My goal is always to contribute to the team’s success, whether people acknowledge it or not. I try to score runs without worrying about my wicket.”

The left-hander, who showed some resistance alongside Naseem Shah in Pakistan’s collapsing chase, revealed that they were determined to take the game deep.

“Naseem and I were discussing that if we could take the game to the last over, we had a chance. But with no wickets left in hand, it wasn’t possible,” he said.

Khushdil Shah, who has been a consistent target of criticism from a section of the fanbase, admitted that he’s grown used to the negativity.

“People have been chanting slogans at me for two years now. It’s become a habit. I even tell them, ‘Go on, chant some more,'” he said.

“This is a big tournament happening on our home soil. It’s important for people to support the team instead of tearing down players. It’s disappointing when your own fans do this at your home ground.

“It shouldn’t happen, but I’ve learned to handle it and just focus on my game.”

Fakhar Zaman ruled out of Champions Trophy 2025: sources

Pakistan faced a major blow ahead of the much-awaited ICC Champions Trophy 2025 clash against arch-rivals India as opening batter Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury, sources confirmed on Thursday.

Fakhar, who sustained an injury during Pakistan’s group-stage clash against New Zealand in Karachi, will not be traveling with the team to Dubai for the match against India. The ICC is expected to make an official announcement regarding his replacement soon.

The injury occurred in the very first over of New Zealand’s innings when Fakhar fell awkwardly while fielding, forcing him to leave the ground for medical assessment.

Though he attempted to return to the field after some time, he eventually walked off again, raising serious concerns about his fitness.

Later, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a statement saying, “Fakhar Zaman is being assessed and examined for a muscular sprain, and further updates will be provided in due course.”

Despite the discomfort, Fakhar still came out to bat in Pakistan’s chase of 321 runs. However, he looked far from his usual fluent self, managing a scratchy 24 before getting dismissed.

With no other specialist opener in the squad apart from Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan now faces a major selection headache ahead of the crucial Champions Trophy match against India.

The defending champions and hosts Pakistan began their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a 60-run loss against New Zealand yesterday.

They will now travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the much-awaited clash against arch-rivals India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 23. Pakistan will then return home to face Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on February 27.

Salman Ali Agha reveals the key factor behind Pakistan’s defeat

KARACHI: Pakistan vice-captain Salman Ali Agha pointed out the team’s weaknesses after their defeat against New Zealand in their opening match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 at the National Bank Stadium on Wednesday.

Will Young and Tom Latham’s centuries and clinical bowling performance propelled New Zealand to a comprehensive victory against Pakistan by 60 runs.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Salman emphasized the need for better batting performances and consistency. He stressed the importance of turning starts into substantial innings and described Fakhar Zaman as vital for a good start.

“We need to convert our 40s and 50s into big scores; otherwise, winning matches will remain difficult, as we saw today.”

“If Fakhar had opened today, the powerplay score could have been different. But today wasn’t our day, and that’s why we lost the match,” Salman remarked.

Agha also highlighted the necessity of better strike rotation to build partnerships and maintain momentum. The all-rounder emphasized consistency as a crucial factor for competing with top teams.

“To become a strong force, we must maintain consistency. We can’t afford to perform poorly in one match and then exceptionally well in the next—we need to deliver consistently,” he said.

Reflecting on the team’s strategy, Agha revealed that Pakistan had aimed to limit New Zealand to a total below 300, considering the pitch conditions favourable for a chase.

However, their slow start in the batting powerplay—scoring just 22 runs—prevented them from gaining the required momentum.

“We planned to restrict them to around 270 or a maximum of 300 runs, as it was a chaseable target with a good start. But our poor start in batting cost us the momentum, ultimately leading to our failure in reaching the target,” he explained.

Following this setback, defending champions Pakistan will now travel to Dubai, where they will face arch-rivals India on February 23.
