Mitchell Starc reveals reasons behind his ICC Champions Trophy 2025 withdrawal

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to skip the ongoing ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.

The star pacer was named in Australia’s preliminary squad for the eight-team tournament, however, he later withdrew his name at the eleventh hour, citing personal reasons.

“We understand and respect Mitch’s [Mitchell Starc] decision,” chair of selectors George Bailey said. “Mitch is deeply respected for his commitment to international cricket and the priority he places on performing for Australia.”

Recently, Starc, during an appearance on the Willow Talk podcast in Australia, revealed that the main reason behind his absence was to take a rest and keep his body fit for the ICC World Test Championship Final against South Africa in June.

“There are a few different reasons, some personal views,” Starc said. “I had a bit of ankle pain through the Test series, so I just need to get that one right.”

“Obviously, we have the Test final coming up and a West Indies tour after that. There is some IPL cricket as well.

“But the main one at the top of my mind is the Test final. Get my body right, play some cricket in the next couple of months and then be ready to go for the Test final.”

For the unversed, Australia entered the Champions Trophy without their pace trio, as captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were ruled out of the tournament due to injuries.

Meanwhile, their match against South Africa was abandoned due to rain in Rawalpindi.

They will next face Afghanistan in their last group stage match on February 28 at Lahore’s Gadaffi Stadium.

Champions Trophy: Jos Buttler opens up on captaincy future after Afghanistan loss

LAHORE: England skipper Jos Buttler opened up on his captaincy future after Afghanistan knocked his team out of the tournament in the eighth match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 here at Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

Chasing a daunting total of 326 in a virtual knockout, England were bowled out on 317 in 49.5 overs. Afghanistan Azmatullah Omarzai starred with the ball, taking a five-wicket haul.

With this victory, Afghanistan kept their hopes alive for the Champions Trophy, while England, the runners-up in 2004 and 2013, were eliminated from the tournament after losing their first two matches.

Following the defeat, Buttler, in a post-match press conference, stated that he would “consider all possibilities.”

“It’s tough to say, stood here right now, and I don’t want to make any sort of emotional statements.”

“But I think it’s fair to say that you’ve got to consider all possibilities,” Buttler said.

He emphasized the joys and challenges of being a captain, as well as the current form of the England team.

“I’ve enjoyed it [the captaincy]. I’ve seen lots of people say it doesn’t sit well with me, but I do enjoy it. I enjoy the challenge.”

“Obviously I don’t enjoy losing games of cricket and the results. And of course when they’re not going well, you do look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘Am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution?’ I think that’s what I’ve got to work out.” he remarked.

Jos Buttler further asserted that his future as a captain is not in his hands and will take a little time to think about the leadership role.

“You [the press] are probably not the first people I’d discuss that with,” he said. “I’ll take a little bit of time to work out, personally, what I think is right, and obviously, the guys at the top are in charge, and they’ll have their own views as well.” the skipper concluded.

For the unversed, Jos Buttler guided England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup, his first tournament as captain.

However, the team has struggled since then, losing six of nine matches in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The team experienced a heavy defeat to India in the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup and is now being knocked out of the Champions Trophy with one group match left, having lost consecutively to Australia and Afghanistan.

Champions Trophy: Afghanistan script iconic victory over England in last-over thriller

LAHORE: Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai led Afghanistan to a historic victory over England, knocking them out of the tournament with a thrilling eight-run victory in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 here at Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

Chasing a daunting total of 326 in a virtual knockout, England were bowled out on 317 in 49.5 overs. Azmatullah Omarzai starred with the ball, taking a five-wicket haul.

With this victory, Afghanistan kept their hopes alive for the Champions Trophy semi-finals, while England, the runners-up in 2004 and 2013, were eliminated from the tournament.

The England team got off to a shaky start with 30-2 in the first six overs. Phil Salt (12) was dismissed in the third over, while Jamie Smith (9) was caught off Mohammad Nabi’s bowling.

Consequently, England found themselves under immense pressure. However, Joe Root took control, playing a measured knock with rotation of strike and timely boundaries.

Root and Ben Duckett added 68 runs for the second wicket. Duckett, who had scored a century in the previous match, was dismissed for 38 runs.

Following this, Root’s partnership of 35 runs with Harry Brook briefly steadied the innings. Brook was dismissed for 25 after being caught and bowled by Nabi, leaving England 133-4 in 21.4 overs.

Joe Root continued to anchor the innings from the other end, ensuring stability despite the wickets at regular intervals.

Following Brook’s wicket, the England captain, Jos Buttler, arrived at the crease and rescued the team along with Joe Root. The duo added 83 runs for the fifth wicket.

But Omarzai broke the vital partnership with Buttler’s dismissal, who looked solid with his 38 off 42 balls. He hit two sixes in his brisk innings.

Furthermore, England’s team was rocked again by Liam Livingstone’s wicket, who was caught behind on 10 runs, thanks to Gulbadin Naib’s bowling.

With 91 runs required from 66 balls and only four wickets in hand, England’s chances appeared grim, but Joe Root added another vital 54-run partnership with Jamie Overton to put England in striking distance.

In the 46th over, Omarzai struck again, removing Joe Root, just when England needed a further 39 runs off 24 balls.

Joe Root, who scored his first ODI century since the 2019 World Cup, remained the top scorer with his masterful 120 off 111 balls, laced with 12 fours and one six

In the last over, England required 13 runs from 6 balls with one wicket in hand which proved too much.

Azmatullah Omarzai bowled the penultimate over superbly and took the wicket of Adil Rashid on the second last ball to take Afghanistan to a historic victory in their maiden outing of the eight-nation tournament.

Apart from Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi took two wickets for Afghanistan, while Rashid, Naib, and Fazalhaq Farooqi each added to the victory with one scalp apiece.

Earlier, Ibrahim Zadran’s sublime century propelled Afghanistan to a massive total of 325 in their allocated 50 overs.

Zadran’s record-breaking 177 off 146 deliveries included six huge sixes and 12 elegant boundaries.

After opting to bat first, Afghanistan got off to a shaky start as opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz (6) was bowled by Jofra Archer in the fifth over.

Archer struck again, removing Sediqullah Atal (4) and Rahmat Shah (4), leaving Afghanistan at 37-3 in 8.5 overs.

After the early inroads from England, Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (40) joined the opening batter, Ibrahim Zadran, steading the innings.

The duo formed a 103 runs-vital partnership to take Afghanistan to 140 in 29.3 overs. Shahidi was dismissed off Adil Rashid. His brisk knock included three fours. However, Zadran continued his dominant display, reaching a well-made half-century.

Following the captain’s wicket, emerging all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai (41) joined the half-centurion Zadran to add a 72-run stand, providing Afghanistan a strong platform for the last ten overs.

Omarzai’s quick-fire 41 off 31 balls featured three sixes and a four before he was caught off Jamie Overton. Zadran, meanwhile, remained the anchor, reaching his sixth ODI century off 106 balls.

In the last phase of the innings, Mohammad Nabi joined the centurion Ibrahim Zadran; together, they forged 111 runs partnership of just 55 balls. Nabi’s explosive 40 off 24 balls included three sixes and two fours.

Both Zadran and Nabi fell in the penultimate, but their efforts helped Afghanistan post a formidable total of 325.

For England, Jofra Archer was the stand-out bowler with his three wickets, while Liam Livingstone chipped in with his two wickets.

‘We can’t replace entire team with U19 players’: Aqib Javed backs Pakistan’s current squad

Pakistan interim head coach, Aqib Javed, has dismissed the notion of making wholesale changes to the national team following their disastrous ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.

Addressing the media in Rawalpindi, Aqib pointed out how fans often look for a singular reason behind defeats but emphasized that losses are a collective team effort.

“A common fan watching the match wants an explanation for why the team lost. But there’s no single reason or just one or two players to blame—the entire team lost,” he said.

Aqib Javed defended the squad, expressing his belief that this was Pakistan’s best available team.

“Shaheen, Haris, and Naseem—everyone knows they are our best pacers and the future of Pakistan,” he stated.

“As for Babar Azam, tell me, who else is at his level right now? People keep saying to change the team entirely, but look at the experience level—except for Babar, no one in this squad has played 100 matches.

“Yes, they have talent and past performances to back them up, but in recent games, they underperformed. That doesn’t mean they don’t belong in the team.”

Aqib Javed also reminded critics that this same group of players had achieved historic victories in Australia and South Africa.

“This is the same squad that won series in Australia and South Africa, creating history. We’ve already introduced several new players and are trying to build a stronger team,” he said.

“Just because we lost doesn’t mean we should overhaul the squad and bring in an entire U19 team.”

Despite Pakistan’s struggles in the Champions Trophy, Aqib believes the team is improving overall.

“In my opinion, this team is already getting better and is heading in the right direction. But, unfortunately, we didn’t perform well in the Champions Trophy,” he concluded.

Notably, the defending champions and hosts Pakistan have crashed out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in the group stage after consecutive defeats against New Zealand and India.

The Green Shirts will now face Bangladesh in their final group-stage match on February 27 in Rawalpindi, but the result will have no bearing on their campaign.

Aqib Javed explains Irfan Khan, Sufiyan Muqeem’s exclusion from Champions Trophy squad

Aqib Javed, the interim white-ball head coach of Pakistan, explained the reasons behind the exclusion of spinner Sufiyan Muqeem and middle-order batter Irfan Khan from the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Aqib Javed addressed the media in Rawalpindi on Wednesday ahead of tomorrow’s Champions Trophy clash against Bangladesh.

During the media conference, he was asked about the exclusion of young cricketers Irfan Khan and Sufiyan Muqeem from the squad.

In response, Aqib emphasized the importance of differentiating between performances in different formats, while highlighting the lack of ODI experience of both players.

“We often mix T20I performances with ODIs and other formats,” he explained. “Irfan Khan has played only eight ODIs so far, and he hasn’t delivered any innings that made us feel we missed him or that he created a significant impact.”

Aqib Javed then provided a detailed breakdown of Sufiyan’s selection journey and clarified that he is still in the plans.

“We picked him based on his potential. He made his ODI debut in South Africa, and before that, he performed well in T20Is in Zimbabwe, which earned him a spot on the South Africa tour,” he added.

“But the reality is, he has played only one ODI so far, hasn’t played many List A matches, and hasn’t even made his first-class debut yet.

“We rested Abrar Ahmed from the last ODI against South Africa to ensure he [Sufiyan Muqeem] at least got a game. We brought him in ourselves, and we know exactly where and how to utilize him in the future.”
