Tayyab, Nasir qualify for CWG Men’s doubles Squash pre quarter-finals

BIRMINGHAM: National players Tayyab Aslam and Nasir Iqbal starred in the Men’s double clash against Ghana’s opponents to qualify for the pre-quarterfinal in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

The Pakistan pair displayed absolute dominance over Ghana’s Ayinh Evans and Anafo Clement in the Round of 32 face-off on Thursday to continue their march further in the competition.

In a one-sided clash, the duo left no room for their opponents to push them on the back foot and dominated both sets to run away with a resounding 2-0 victory with the scores of 11-1 and 11-1.

Tayyab and Nasir will now face Scotland’s Greg Lobban and Rory Stewart in the pre-quarterfinal on Friday and have become a potential hope for another medal for Pakistan in the Games.

Nasir will now team up with his fellow Faiza Zafar to take on New Zealand’s Joelle King and Paul Coll in the Round of 16 Mixed Doubles. Whereas, Amna Fayyaz and Faiza will lock horns with Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold and Aifa Azman in the Round of 16 Women’s doubles.

Bowlers-led South Africa crush Sri Lanka by ten wickets in CWG 2022

BIRMINGHAM: South African bowlers wreaked havoc over the Sri Lankan batting line-up before the openers easily chased down the paltry target in the seventh over to complete a dominating 10-wicket victory for the Proteas.

Batting first, the Sri Lankan batters had a day to forget as the South African bowlers displayed combined effort to topple the Lioness’ batting line-up for a skimpy 46.

Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu remained the only batter to display grit for the side as she top-scored with 13, while the rest of the batters could not get into the double figures.

Right-arm pacer Nadine de Klerk led the way for South Africa with three wickets, while Masabata Klaas followed back with two. Shabnim Ismail, Nonkululeko Mlaba, and Chloe Tryon made one scalp each.

Set to chase a mere 47 in 20 overs, Proteas openers Anneke Bosch and Tazmin Brits easily steered their side to a crushing victory in the seventh over as none of the Sri Lankan bowlers managed to break their opening stand.

Brits top-scored with a run-a-ball 21, while Bosch followed back with a quick 20 off a mere 16 balls, laced with two boundaries.

Inam to start his CWG campaign as Wrestling event embarks on August 5

BIRMINGHAM: Inam Butt, the reigning gold medallist, will begin his Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign on August 5, when the wrestling competition gets underway.

The gold medalist of the previous edition Inam will be competing in the 86kg category and is one of the major medal hopes for the country.

Along with Inam, national wrestlers Inayat Ullah and Zaman Anwar will compete tomorrow in the 65kg and 125kg weight divisions, respectively.

While the wrestling competition, which starts on August 6, will include wrestlers Ali Asad, Mohammad Tahir Sharif, and Tayyab Raza competing in weight classes of 57 kg, 74 kg, and 97 kg, respectively.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Pakistan contingent has thus far claimed two medals in different sporting events. Weightlifter Muhammad Nooh Dastgir Butt claimed gold in the 109+kg category, while Judo player Shah Hussain Shah secured Bronze in 90kg.

Shajar storms into the Men’s 200m semi-finals in CWG 2022

BIRMINGHAM: National sprinter Shajar Abbas finished first in Heat 2 of the Round 1 Men’s 200m and qualified for the semi-finals of the competition.

Shajar, who had an unwanted end to his 100m medal expedition, shone in the 200m category as the sprinter amassed the finishing line in 21.12 seconds and marched further in the competition.

The national sprinter, fuelled with momentum stunned his six opponents in the race including Maldive’s Hassan Saaid, who clocked a season-best time.

Following this achievement, Shajar has become the first Pakistan athlete to qualify for the Athletics semi-final after 30 years.

Shajar’s qualification to the semi-finals has glimmered a ray of hope for a third medal for Pakistan thus far.

PSB announces cash awards for Pakistani medalists in CWG 2022

ISLAMABAD: Director General Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Colonel (retd) Mohammad Asif Zaman announced cash prizes for weightlifter Muhammad Nooh Dastgir Butt, who won gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, and bronze-medalist judoka Shah Hussain, here on Thursday.

Zaman announced that the Rs5,000,000 cash award would be given to the gold-medalist Nooh while Shah would receive Rs1,000,000 for the remarkable feat by the two athletes in the event.

“You’ve made the nation proud with your great achievement,” DG Sports Board congratulated Nooh over the phone and said that the medal-winning athletes would be given a warm reception on their return to Pakistan.

Weightlifter Nooh created history as he set the new Commonwealth Games record by lifting 405kgs and secured the first gold for Pakistan in the ongoing global event.

Whereas, judo player Hussain outclassed his South African opponent to clinch a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Rooman stuns Scotland as Pakistan secure first win in CWG Hockey

BIRMINGHAM: National Hockey team achieved their first win in the Commonwealth Games journey as they defeated Scotland 3-2 in the Pool A match of the men’s hockey event, creating a ray of hope to qualify for the semifinals. 

Rooman netted the ball just six minutes before the final whistle to steer the green shirts to victory, before Afraz Hussain and Abdul Shahid contributed with a goal each.

Scotland dominated the first quarter of the game as they earned their first penalty in the 10th minute. Robert Field was quick to react to play the ball across the area after Jamie Golden’s shot was saved, and Cammy Golden volleyed the ball into the nets to score the opening goal.

The Scots well-coordinated defence effectively neutralized Pakistan’s strong response in the remainder of the quarter.

However, in the second quarter, Pakistan attacked with more vigorous efforts and levelled the lead after 22 minutes when Afraz beat Tommy Alexander with an unstoppable shot on the turn and the goalkeeper was helpless to stop it.

Within a minute Shahid netted the ball to make it 2-1 and put his side in lead at half-time.

Struan Walker scored the equaliser in the 38th minute after both teams exchanged a flurry of attack and defence moves in the thrilling second half.

Scotland started the final quarter with a new zeal and showed fabulous attack skills however Pakistan blocked their efforts to keep the score 2-2.

However, Rooman retaliated in the 55th minute when he received a pass into the D and his shot went off the crossbar and over the goal line to make it 3-2.

With the win, Pakistan are now ranked fourth with four points in pool A with  South Africa sitting in second and New Zealand in third with the same number of points.

Pakistan will now take on pool leader Australia in their final game on August 4.

National Judo player Hussain wins first medal for Pakistan in CWG 2022

BIRMINGHAM: National Judo player Shah Hussain Shah secured the first medal for Pakistan in the ongoing Commonwealth Games as he outclassed South African opponent Thomas-Laszlo Breytenbach in the competition on Wednesday.

Amid Pakistan’s dismal show in the ongoing Commonwealth Games, Judo player Hussain emerged as the hope for the country and secured the maiden medal in the global event.

While the majority of the national athletes in various sports have crashed out of the medal race including the national women’s cricket team. Hussain shone at the glittering event and secured a Bronze medal.

Besides Hussain, national weightlifter Muhammad Nooh Dastagir Butt will be in action in the final of Men’s 109+kg today. Whereas, his fellow Hanzala Dastagir Butt remained unsuccessful in the Men’s 109 kg Final as he finished ninth.

BIRMINGHAM: National players Nasir Iqbal and Faiza Zafar starred in the Mixed Double Squash event in the ongoing Commonwealth Games as the duo outclassed their Sri Lankan opponents to keep the medal hopes alive for Pakistan.

Pakistan’s pair of Nasir and Faiza started their mixed double campaign on a high as they outclassed Sri Lanka’s Sinaly Chanithma and Wakeel Shamil 2-0 to march into the next round.

In a one-sided clash, the duo of Nasir and Faiza dominated Sri Lankan opponents for the majority of the match before running with a consolidating victory with the scores of 11-10 and 11-5.

Another Pakistan pair of Tayyab Aslam and Amna Fayyaz, on the other hand, remained unable to follow the footsteps of their fellows as the pair suffered a crushing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Barbados’ mix Best Meagan and Cumberbatch Khamai.

Besides Squash, Pakistan lost to Australia in the Badminton Women’s doubles event as the top pair of Mahoor Shahzad and Ghazala Siddiqui remained clueless against Australian opponents; suffering a crushing 2-0 defeat.

Australia remain unbeaten as Pakistan end CWG campaign victory-less

BIRMINGHAM: The Pakistan Women’s Cricket Team’s Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign came to a disappointing conclusion when Australia defeated the national team in the group stage to hand the latter their third consecutive defeat in the event.

After losing the opening two matches against Barbados and India respectively, the Green Shirts failed to shine in their third match against Australia as well.

Following three defeats in the Group stage, Pakistan’s chances of capturing the medal ended in the cricket event.

In the match, Pakistan bowlers started on a high as they removed two Australian batters Alyssa Healy and Meg Lanning at a combined score of 19 before Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath scored half-centuries to bolster the side to a commendable 160/2 in the allotted 20 overs.

McGrath top-scored with a magnificent knock of 78 runs off 51 deliveries, laced with 10 boundaries and a six. Mooney, on the other hand, followed back with a brilliant 70 off 49 balls with the help of eight boundaries and a six and remained unbeaten in the process.

For Pakistan, only Fatima Sana and Sidra Iqbal managed to make one scalp each.

Set to chase 161, Pakistan’s batting line-up failed completely and could only manage to score 116/8 in 20 overs, falling 44 runs short of the target.

Captain Bismah Maroof was among the runs for her team but once again conceded too many deliveries as she scored 23 off 32 deliveries with the help of just one boundary. All-rounder Omaima Sohail, on the other hand, scored a run-a-ball 23.

Fatima bettered her 4/41 with the bat as she played an astounding and unbeaten knock of 35 runs off a mere 26 deliveries including two boundaries and as many sixes.

For Australia, McGrath also led the bowling chart with three wickets, while Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown, Jess Jonassen, and Alana King struck out a batter apiece.

Faiza Zafar loses to Indian opponent in CWG Squash plate semi-finals

BIRMINGHAM: National player Faiza Zafar returned an unwanted outcome in the plate semi-final of the Women’s Single Squash competition as India’s Sunayna Sara Kuruvilla outclassed her 3-0.

Faiza, who marched further in the competition after defeating Guyana’s Ashley Khalil in the plate quarter-final on Monday, failed to continue the momentum in the last four.

In a one-sided clash, India’s Kuruvilla handed a crushing 3-0 defeat before dominating Faiza for the majority of the match.

Another squash player Amna Fayyaz, on the other hand, will compete in her respective plate semi-finals tonight.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan’s wait for the medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022 continues as several national athletes have already been ruled out of the medal race.
