All-round Barmy Army edge Falcons to taste maiden FairBreak victory

KOWLOON: Barmy Army Women’s captain Lauren Winfield-Hill scored a magnificent half-century before bowlers Rumana Ahmed and Kavisha Egodage powered their side to maiden FairBreak Invitational triumph with a close nine-run victory over Falcons Women.

Set to chase 144, the Falcons fell just nine runs short and could finish at 134/9 despite a solid start.

Falcons’ openers Danni Wyatt and Chamari Athapaththu charged on the Barmy Army bowlers straight up as the pair switched a magnificent 77-run partnership in the eighth over before Laura Cardoso dismissed the former to draw the first breakthrough.

Wyatt scored a brisk 44 off just 33 deliveries, laced up with three boundaries and three sixes.

The Falcons then lost two more wickets in quick successions as Theertha Satish (5) and set batter Athapaththu fell in consecutive overs.

Athapaththu remained the notable run-getter for the Falcons with 38 off just 21 balls, hitting two boundaries and four sixes.

The Falcons then ran into a match-defining collapse and kept losing wickets at an alarming rate which stopped the flow of runs and Barmy Army bowlers roared back to restrict them nine runs short of glory.

Egodage and Rumana led the bowling attack for Barmy Army with three wickets each, followed by Cardoso’s two, while Tara Norris could pick up a wicket.

Put into bat first, Barmy Army accumulated 143/6 in the allotted 20 overs with their skipper Winfield-Hill leading the charge with a brilliant half-century.

Winfield-Hill singlehandedly scripted a solid start for her side as he stitched a 50-run partnership with her fellow opener Deandra Dotting, who could score seven off 12 before perishing in the sixth over.

Barmy Army then dealt another blow in the form of Laura Wolvaardt (three off eight) and slipped to 57/2 in the eighth over.

Following two back-to-back dismissals, Winfield-Hill stitched a brief 21-run partnership with Nigar Sultana before finally walking back to the pavilion in the 11th over, briefly after raising her bat for a fighting half-century.

She top-scored for Barmy Army with 54 off 35 deliveries, smashing four boundaries and four sixes.

Barmy Army then lost wickets at regular intervals after their skipper’s dismissal but Sultana held her ground firm and played an anchoring knock of 40 runs before falling in the final over.

Athapaththu led the bowling attack for the Falcons with four wickets while Christina Gough and Gunjan Shukla struck out a batter each.

Diana, Aliya strike before rain washes out Tornadoes-Warriors match

KOWLOON: Tornadoes’ Aliya Riaz and Diana Baig handed back-to-back jolts to Warriors before rain played spoilsport in the fourth match of the FairBreak Invitational tournament 2023 on Wednesday.

Electing to field first, Tornadoes made a flourishing start to the game thanks to a brilliant bowling attack led by the Pakistani duo.

When rain halted play Warriors were 84 for 3 with wicketkeeper Sindhu Sriharsha and Tanya Ruma holding the crease on 17 and 21, respectively.

Diana earned the first breakthrough for Tornadoes, dismissing Esha Oza for a paltry 3 in the third over. Aliya then struck down Ellie Johnstone an over later to restrict the Warriors to 28/3 in the fifth over.

Australia’s Phoebe Litchfield, however, was in fine touch as she scored 27 off 21 and held the fort for the Warriors while wickets tumbled from the other end. Her knock was cut short by Chanida Sutthiruang before the end of the powerplay.

The game witnessed only 12 overs of play before the showers forced umpires to abandon the match. The two teams shared two points each, taking the Warriors to the top of the table with six points from two games.

Carey, bowlers script winning start for Spirit as Barmy Army falter

KOWLOON: Spirit Women’s bowlers put on a tight bowling display to restrict Barmy Army Women to a modest total before skipper Nicola Carey led from the front to power her side to a convincing victory in the campaign opener.

Set to chase 136, the Spirit amassed the total in the 19th over for the loss of six wickets with their captain Carey leading the charge with a sensible 40-run knock.

Openers Sarah Bryce and Sophia Dunkley provided a flying start to the run chase as the pair added 39 runs within four overs before Rumana Ahmed dismissed Bryce, who could score seven off 10.

Natthakan Chantham then joined Dunkley in the middle and put on a crucial partnership for the second wicket. The duo batted sensibly and added 28 runs to the total before the former departed after scoring a 17-ball 23.

Chantham’s dismissal sparked a collapse and the Spirit soon slipped to 72/4 in the ninth over with Dunkley also falling victim. She scored brisk 35 off 20 deliveries, laced up with three boundaries and as many sixes.

Following the setback, Carey played a captain’s knock and put on a gritty fifth-wicket partnership with Kerry-Anne Tomlinson.

The pair batted cautiously and added 46 runs to the total in 38 deliveries before Spirit two more quick wickets as Tomlinson (20) and Nensi Patel (2) perished in successive overs.

Carey, however, held his ground firm and steered her side to glory in the 19th over with a fighting knock and a little help from Nattaya Boochatham, who scored a run-a-ball six.

Carey top-scored for the Spirit with 40 off 30 deliveries, hitting six boundaries.

Put into bat first by the Spirit, Bary Army could only post 135/5 in their set of 20 overs despite Shemaine Campbelle’s brisk 33 runs down the order as their top order faltered.

Barmy Army openers Deandra Dottin and Lauren Winfield-Hill scripted a promising start but Mahika Gaur ceased the budding partnership in the third over as she got Dottin (8) caught behind.

Following her dismissal, Bary Army ran into a collapse and consequently slipped to 86/5 in the 14th over with Winfield-Hill (22) and Kavisha Egodage (30) remained the notable run-getters.

Campbelle, alongside Tara Norris (17), looked to settle things down for Barmy Army with an unbeaten 49-run partnership and powered Barmy Army to a competitive total, which, however, was not enough in the end.

Betty Chan and Mahika Gaur bagged two wickets each for Spirit while Ayabonga Khaka made one scalp.

Litchfield’s 77 propels Warriors to thrash Sapphires in FairBreak Invitational

KOWLOON: Phoebe Litchfield’s magnificent 77-run knock in the run chase aided Warriors Women to seal a dominating seven-wicket victory over Sapphires Women in the second fixture of the FairBreak Invitational Tournament 2023.

Set to chase a mere 112, the Warriors accumulated 115/3 in just 12.4 overs at the back of a scintillating knock by Litchfield.

The Warriors’ openers scripted a decent start for their side in the run chase as the opening pair of Hayley Matthews and Litchfield added 28 runs for the first wicket before the former perished in the fourth over after scoring nine off seven.

The Warriors then jolted with another blow as Katherine Sciver-Brunt trapped Esha Oza (1) plumb to draw another success for the Sapphires in the next over.

Following the slump, skipper Sindhu Sriharsha joined Litchfield in the middle and helped her to raise an astounding 70-run partnership for the third wicket.

Litchfield was the core aggressor of the third-wicket stand and scored the majority of the partnership runs before a run out brought down the curtains on her brilliant knock in the 12th over.

She top-scored for the Warriors with a 37-ball 77, which featured 16 boundaries and a six.

Following Litchfield’s dismissal, Sriharsha then put on a brief partnership with Mignon du Preez (9*) and made sure to script a winning start to her side’s campaign. She remained unbeaten with a cautious 10 off 23 deliveries.

For Sapphires, Sciver-Brunt and Erin Burns could pick up a wicket.

Put into bat first, the Sapphires’ batting lineup failed to put up a big total on the scoreboard as could amass 111/7 in the allotted 20 overs.

The Sapphires had a similar decent start but ran into a collapse after losing the first wicket and could not recover from it as the Warriors’ bowlers exerted domination to restrict them to a meagre total.

Wicketkeeper batter Babette de Leede remained the top-scorer for the Sapphires amid a dismal show with the bat, scoring 24 off 36 deliveries, while opener Katie Mack followed with a 19-ball 21.

Kathryn Bryce led the bowling attack for the Warriors with 3/25, followed by Amanda-Jade Wellington’s 2/15, while Jess Kerr and Matthews made one scalp each.
