Graeme Cremer returns to Zimbabwe squad after seven-year hiatus

Former Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer will wear the national colors again after nearly seven years, as he has been recalled for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, starting October 29 in Harare.

Cremer, who last represented Zimbabwe in 2018, had stepped away from cricket to pursue a professional career in golf and relocated to the UAE, where his wife works as an airline pilot.

However, the veteran spinner recently returned home and reignited his cricketing ambitions through local club competitions, a move that has now paved the way for his international comeback.

The Zimbabwe selectors have rewarded Cremer’s persistence, drafting him into a largely unchanged 15-member squad that went unbeaten through the ICC Africa Regional Qualifiers earlier this year.

He replaces fast bowler Trevor Gwandu in the lineup, as Zimbabwe continue preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

All-rounder Sean Williams remains unavailable due to personal reasons, Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed.

The series against Afghanistan will be played entirely at the Harare Sports Club, which also hosted the one-off Test earlier in the tour.

The T20Is are scheduled for October 29, 31, and November 2.

Former Zimbabwe captain Cremer set to return after seven-year break

Former Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer has returned to the fold after a seven-year break and is available for international selection.

The leg-spinner who led Zimbabwe from 2016 to 2018 has played 96 One Day Internationals (ODIs), 19 Tests, and 29 Twenty20 Internationals.

However, in 2018, he gave up cricket for golf and then moved with his family to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he was involved in coaching stints, including at the Rajasthan Royals Academy.

Graham Cremer made his comeback after featuring in the National Premier League, the 45-over club competition in Zimbabwe, where he plays for the Defending champions, Takashinga Patriots Cricket Club, and is the leading wicket-taker after two matches.

Following his appearance in domestic competition, he is eligible for selection to the national side and could be in line for September’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers, which is scheduled to be played in Zimbabwe.

Graham Cremer shared his thoughts after returning to the national domestic circuit.

“It’s amazing being back. Kwekwe was my home ground for many years, so it was great walking out and being part of Takashinga, which is such a prestigious club, he said.

“They welcomed me into the team, and it was an amazing team environment. I’m really happy with the start,” he added.

It is noteworthy to mention that Zimbabwe’s one of the most experienced players, Brendan Taylor, also made his comeback to the Zimbabwe national side after serving a three-and-a-half-year ban for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code.

The right-handed batter is currently taking part in the second Test against New Zealand in Bulawayo. The 38-year-old remained the top scorer with 44 runs for his team in the first innings.

“We are close friends, myself and Brendan, so it was an amazing feeling being on the field with him again and nice to see him score some runs,” Cremer said of Brendan Taylor.

“It’s great watching him bat, and then walking out onto the field with him, just how we communicate because we have played so much cricket together. It really helps someone like that out with me,” he concluded.
