T20 WC: Bangladesh edge Zimbabwe by three runs after final-ball drama

BRISBANE: Sean Williams’ powerful knock of 64 off 42 went in vain as Bangladesh seal a thrilling win by three runs against Zimbabwe after an almost anti-climax in the Group 2 match of the ICC T20 World Cup Super 12s, here on Sunday.

Mosaddek Hussain defended 15 runs in the final over with the last delivery adjudged as a no-ball by the umpire as wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan collected the ball in front of the stumps.

The umpire put the stumps back on and called back the jubilant Bangladesh who had already celebrated the victory with Zimbabwe requiring just 4 runs on a free hit but Blessing Muzrabbani failed to take his team home.

Set to chase 151, Zimbabwe had a dismal start as the first four wickets fell inside the powerplay with Wessly Madhevere, skipper Craig Ervine (c), Milton Shumba and Sikandar Raza failing to enter into the double figures.

Williams then took the team out of the crisis as he gathered with Regis Chakabva for a fifth-wicket partnership of 34 runs before a valiant stand of 63 runs with Ryan Burl.

The left-handed batter was sent back to the pavilion in the penultimate over as the Bangladesh skipper ran him out with Zimbabwe just 19 short of the target.

Mosaddek in his dramatic final over pocketed two crucial wickets as he dismissed Brad Evan (2 off 2) before stumping out No 9 batter Richard Ngarava (6 off 3) on the second last ball.

Taskin Ahmed, on the other hand, remained inspirational with the ball as he returned the figures of 3/19 in his four-overs quota.

Earlier, Najmul Hossain Shanto led the charge for his team with a blistering knock of 71 off 55, aiding Bangladesh to raise a respectable total of 150/7

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh went through a woeful start as opener Soumya Sarkar was dismissed for a duck by Blessing Muzarabani in the second over. The right-arm pacer then got rid of No 3 batter Liton Das when he was batting on 14 off 12 in the last over of the power play.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan then combined excellently with the left-handed opener for a valiant 54-run partnership for the fourth wicket and took the scoreboard to 86/2 in 12.4 overs before the former fell prey to Sean Williams. Shakib played a cautious knock of  23 off 20, hitting just one boundary.

Shanto, who top-scored for the side, smashed seven fours and a six during his colourful knock before he fell prey to right-arm spinner Sikandar Raza in the 17th over.

Richard Ngarava, however, bowled an excellent final over, as he dismissed Mosaddek Hossain (7 off 10) and Nurul Hasan (1 off 1) before Afif Hossain ran out on the last ball after he scored 29 off 19.

‘Trying to overcome our mistakes,’ Haris confident in team to bounce back

PERTH: Pakistan right-arm speedster Haris Rauf acknowledged the national team’s poor start to their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 campaign but believes there is plenty of room for them to bounce back.

Haris, while talking at a pre-match press conference here on Saturday, commented on the team’s dismal start to their world cup campaign and expressed confidence in doing well in the remaining fixtures.

“We performed really well in last year’s world cup and were off to a decent start but that has gone by and we’re in the new world cup,” Haris stated.

“No doubt, our start this time was not as good as we lost two close matches. Ups and downs are parts of cricket but everyone knows the effort the team puts in and the belief each of us has in everyone.

“Definitely, we get hurt, as much as the fans do, but in the end, cricket is a game and winning and losing are parts of it.”

The right-arm pacer then revealed that the squad discussed the errors made in the previous two games and is working to correct them.

“We sit together and discussed our mistakes and tried to overcome them. There is still plenty of tournament left, so our strive will do our best in the upcoming matches,” said Haris.

In response to a question regarding the dropped catches off his bowling, Haris admitted that it hurts the bowler but again coined it as a part of the game.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan will take on the Netherlands in a must-win Super 12s match on Sunday.

The Green Shirts endured an opening defeat against arch-rivals India before suffering an upset defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe.

Phillips, Boult power New Zealand to thrash Sri Lanka in T20 WC

SYDNEY: New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips stroked a magnificent century before left-arm pacer Trent Boult wreaked havoc over Sri Lanka to bolster their side to a resounding 65-run victory in an all-important Super 12s fixture of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Set to chase 168, the Sri Lankan batting lineup endured an onslaught from the Kiwi bowlers and crumbled out for a paltry 102 in the 20th over.

The Asian champions had a deplorable start to the run chase as the side lost four wickets for a mere eight runs.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa attempted to fight back with their gritty knocks, however, no support from the rest of the batters, resulted in Sri Lanka falling 67 runs short.

Shanaka top-scored for his side with 35 off 32 balls, while Rajapaksa could score 34 in just 22 deliveries, laced with three boundaries and two sixes.

The rest of the Sri Lankan batters failed to contribute significantly in the run chase and could not get into the double figures.

Left-arm pacer Boult was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand as he returned with magnificent figures of 4/13, while Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi bagged two wickets each.

Batting first, New Zealand finished at a decent 167/7 in their quota of 20 overs, thanks to their right-handed batter Phillips.

The Blackcaps were off to a dismal start as they lost three wickets for a paltry 15 runs in four overs as openers Finn Allen (1), Devon Conway (1), and skipper Kane Williamson (8) perished cheaply.

Following the slump, Phillips and Daryll Mitchell stitched a gritty partnership for the fourth wicket and added 84 runs to the total to anchor the innings.

Phillips was the main aggressor in the all-important partnership, while Mitchell was holding his ground firm before Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva castled him in the 15th over.

The right-handed batter could score 22 off 24 deliveries.

Phillips, however, seemed unaffected by Mithcell’s dismissal and kept the scoreboard ticking single-handedly and turned his brilliance into a century in the 19th over.

He top-scored for his side with a terrific knock of 104 off just 64 balls with the help of 10 boundaries and four sixes.

New Zealand’s spinning all-rounder Mitchell Santner remained unbeaten with a handy 11 off just five deliveries, which included a vital six in the final over.

The rest of the New Zealand batters, however, could not amass double figures.

Kasun Rajitha led the bowling attack for Sri Lanka with 2/23, while Maheesh Theekshana, Hasaranga de Silva, Dhananjaya de Silva and Lahiru Kumara struck out a batter each.

WATCH: Gutted Shadab Khan cries after Zimbabwe upset Pakistan

PERTH: An emotional video of all-rounder Shadab Khan has been making rounds on social media platforms following Pakistan’s upset defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12s fixture on Thursday.

In the video, the Pakistan all-rounder can be seen down on his knees and crying at the upset defeat against Zimbabwe.

One of the team’s supporting staff can also be seen tapping on Shadab’s shoulder and consoling him.

Shadab played a crucial role for Pakistan to restrict Zimbabwe to a paltry total as he picked up three wickets and conceded only 23 runs.

The right-handed batter then came out to bat at number five when Pakistan were 36/3 in the eighth over and needed a further 95 runs in 74 balls.

He then stitched an important 52-run partnership with Iftikhar Ahmed before falling to Sikandar Raza in the 14th over, while attempting to hit back-to-back sixes.

His dismissal triggered a frustrating batting collapse and Pakistan, consequently, fell just one run short to endure an upset defeat in the ongoing mega event.

Bowlers power Zimbabwe to upset Pakistan in T20 World Cup

PERTH: Zimbabwean bowlers produced a remarkable performance and powered their side to defend a paltry total to upset Pakistan in the third match of today’s tripleheader in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Set to chase a paltry 131, Pakistan fell just one run short of victory as they could amass 129/8 in their quota of 20 overs.

The Green Shirts had a poor start to their run chase as the side lost both their key batters – Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan – cheaply inside the first power-play for four and 14 respectively.

Iftikhar Ahmed then partnered briefly with Shan Masood for the third wicket and added 13 runs for the third wicket before the former fell victim to Luke Jongwe in the eighth over.

Following his dismissal, Shan joined hands with Shadab Khan and stitched a valiant 52-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The vital partnership between Shan and Shadab seemed to have put Pakistan in command as they cruised to 80/3 in 13 overs before Sikandar Raza struck for his first to provide the all-important breakthrough to his side.

Shadab fell after scoring 17 off 14 with the help of a six.

Coming at number six, Haider Ali bagged a golden duck and caused Pakistan to stutter at 88/5 in the 14th over.

Shan, who was playing the anchoring role, could not carry his bat till the end and fell to Zimbabwe’s key all-rounder Raza in the 16th over. He top-scored for his side with a gritty 44 off 38, laced with three boundaries.

Following the slump, Mohammad Nawaz and Mohammad Wasim Jr put on an important partnership for the seventh wicket and added 34 runs.

Amid their seventh-wicket stand, Pakistan were looking favourites to clinch the victory but Nawaz’s dismissal in the final over brought Zimbabwe back into the game. He could score 22 off 18.

Pakistan then needed three runs on the last delivery and Wasim Jr punched the ball down the ground but sharp work in the deep by the Zimbabwean fielder barred them from taking two runs and force the match to go into the super over.

Pakistan, consequently, could score 129/8 in 20 overs and endured an upset defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe by just one run.

Raza was the pick of the bowlers for Zimbabwe as he bagged three wickets for 25, while Brad Evans claimed two. Blessing Muzarabani and Jongwe struck out a batter each.

Batting first, Zimbabwe could manage to score 130/8 in their quota of 20 overs despite their opener providing a flying start.

Zimbabwean opening pair of Wessley Madhevere and Craig Ervine charged Pakistan bowlers right from the start and added 38 runs in just four overs.

Pakistan speedster Haris Rauf then struck in his first over to break the flourishing partnership and hand Pakistan a much-needed breakthrough as he removed Ervine for 19.

Madhevere’s stay also remained brief at the crease and perished in the next over as Mohammad Wasim Jr trapped him in his legs for 17.

Sean Williams then attempted to anchor the innings with a gritty knock of 31 and stitched two vital partnerships for his side with Milton Shumba and Sikandar Raza respectively.

Shadab Khan, however, put an end to Williams’ inning in the 10th over as he castled the latter for 31. He faced 28 deliveries and smashed three boundaries.

Following Williams’ departure, Zimbabwe ran into a frustrating collapse as the side lost four wickets in a span of just five deliveries and slipped to 95/7 in the 15th over.

Ryan Burl and Brad Evans then stood up for their team and stitched a vital 31-run partnership for the eighth wicket to guide Zimbabwe to a comparatively decent total of 130/8 in 20 overs.

Evans scored 19 before falling to Wasim Jr in the final over, while Burl remained unbeaten on 10.

Mohammad Wasim Jr led the bowling attack for Pakistan as he returned with astounding figures of 4/24, while Shadab bagged three. Haris, on the other hand, made one scalp.
