England down New Zealand to keep T20 WC semi-finals hopes alive

BRISBANE: England openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales laid a solid foundation with a half-century each before the pacers led them to a convincing 20-run victory over New Zealand to keep their hopes intact for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final qualification.

Set to chase 180, New Zealand fell 20 runs short despite a blistering 62-run knock from Glenn Phillips.

The side had a dismal start to the run chase as they lost their openers – Devon Conway (3) and Finn Allen (13) – for a paltry score of 28/2 in five overs.

Following the early setback, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and Glenn Phillips scripted the recovery with an anchoring 91-run partnership for the third wicket.

Williamson, however, was finding it hard to score at a rapid pace unlike his partner Phillips, and as a result, fell to Ben Stokes’ slower delivery while attempting to glide. He scored a run-a-ball 40 including three boundaries.

New Zealand’s batting lineup then began to crumble as James Neesham (6) and Daryl Mitchell fell in the 16th and 17th overs respectively, causing their side to slip to 131/5.

England’s young pacer Sam Curran, who bowled a magnificent final over, struck the gold for his side in the 18th as he undid Phillips to put his side in the commanding position.

Phillips top-scored for New Zealand with 62 off just 36 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and three sixes.

Curran and Chris Woakes bagged two wickets each, while Mark Wood and Stokes made one scalp each.

England, batting first after winning the toss, amassed a decent total of 179/6 in their quota of 20 overs, thanks to brilliant half-centuries from Buttler and Hales.

In a must-win game, the English openers chipped in and laid a solid foundation for a defendable total with a magnificent 81-run partnership.

Hales remained the core aggressor of the 62-ball stand and brought up his 11th T20I half-century.

His stay at the crease, however, remained brief and fell in the 11th over, soon after amassing the landmark. He scored 52 off 40 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries and a six.

England skipper Buttler, on the other hand, stood firm and stitched brief partnerships with Moeen Ali (5), Liam Livingstone (20), and Harry Brook (7) and took his side past the 160-run mark in the 19th over.

The right-handed batter then fell in the same over, courtesy of a brilliant piece of fielding by Tim Southee and Kane Williamson.

He top-scored for the side with a terrific 73 off just 47 balls, laced with seven boundaries and two sixes.

Lockie Ferguson bagged two wickets for New Zealand but was expensive, while Tim Southee, Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi struck out a batter each.

T20 WC: Dhananjaya steers Sri Lanka to comfortable win over Afghanistan

BRISBANE: Dhananjaya de Silva starred with a blistering knock of unbeaten 66 off 42 as Sri Lanka sealed a convincing win by six wickets on Tuesday to push Afghanistan out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

Set to chase 145, Dhananjaya dominated the Afghan bowlers as he smacked six fours and two sixes to take his team home.

Following the defeat, Afghanistan were ruled out of the tournament as they currently sit at the bottom of Group 1 with just two points and have only one game left as they will face Australia on November 4.

Opting to bat first, Afghanistan got off to a cautious start. With the fielding restriction in place, openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Usman Ghani scored 42 runs, but the side was eventually limited to 144/8 as none of their batters could make it into the 30s.

Afghan spinners, Mujeeb ur Rehman and Rashid Khan, on the other hand, put up brave resistance to defend the target as both took two wickets apiece yet their efforts proved insignificant without any support from the pace attack.

After an early scare by Mujeeb in the second over as he dismissed opener Pathum Nissanka, Dhanjaya gathered with Kusal Mendis (25 off 27) to anchor the run chase with a cautious 34-run partnership before Rashid removed the wicket-keeper batter in the eighth over.

Charith Asalanka then joined all-rounder Dhanjaya on the crease and established a strong 54-run partnership in 34 balls to take the scoreboard to 100/2 in 13.2 overs before no 4 batter walked back to the pavilion after scoring 19 off 18.

Sri Lanka sailed comfortably to the target with yet another powerful stand of 42 runs as Bhanuka Rajapksa chipped in with 18 off 14 alongside Dhanjaya.

Earlier in the first innings, Lahiru Kumara provided the first breakthrough to Sri Lanka soon after the powerplay ended as he uprooted the middle stump when wicketkeeper batter Gurbaz was batting at 28 off 24 balls, including two fours and two sixes.

Ghani, however, ended his scratchy knock of 27-ball 27 in the 11th over, falling prey to Hasarange, who bowled superbly throughout the innings and went on to claim the wickets of Rashid Khan and no 9 batter Mujeeb ur Rehman in the last over. The Leg spinner was the pick of the bowlers for the Asian champions as he returned economical figures of 3/13 in his fours quota.

With three brief partnerships in the middle, Afghanistan were able to take its score to 132/5 in 18 overs but Sri Lanka bowled prudently in the last two overs, offering mere 12 runs while they scalped three wickets.

T20 WC: Finch, bowlers shine as Australia ease past Ireland

BRISBANE: Australian bowlers ran through the Irish batting line despite brave resistance by Lorcan Tucker while skipper Aaron Finch led the batting assault with a sensational knock of 63 off 44, aiding the defending champions to seal a comprehensive win by 42 runs against Ireland.

Set to chase a massive target of 180, Ireland were bundled out for 137 in 18.1 overs with Tucker failing to bow in face of a strong Australian bowling attack as he played a valiant knock of an unbeaten 71 off 48 laced with nine boundaries and a six.

Ireland displayed a dismal batting performance as seven of their batters were sent back to the pavilion in single-digit scores while Paul Stirling (11), Gareth Delany (14) and Mark Adair (11) barely make it into double figures.

For Australia, pacers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc bagged two wickets each while spinners Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell took two wickets apiece too. Allrounder Marcus Stoinis also had a scalp to his credit.

Earlier, Australia put up a dominant batting show throughout the innings despite an early scare as opener David Warner was dismissed in the third over after Ireland invited the hosts to bat first.

Following the early breakthrough, Mitchell Marsh and the skipper gathered for a strong 52-run partnership for the second wicket and took the scoreboard to 62/1 in eight overs before the right-arm pacer Barry McCarthy got rid of the No 3 batter Marsh.

Captain Finch then went on to build another superb 70-run partnership in just 36 balls with No 5 batter Marcus Stoinis, who had scored the fastest T20I fifty for Australia in the previous match against Sri Lanka and steered Australia to a commanding position in the game.

Finch smashed five fours and three sixes during his scintillating knock while Stoinis contributed 35 off 25 laced with three fours and a six.

Ireland bowled on tight lines in the death overs as George Dockrell and Josh Little offered three runs each in the 18th and 19th over, respectively, before Tim David and Matthew Wade squeezed out 17 runs off the last over bowled by Mark Adair.

McCarthy was the pick of the bowlers for the Irish side as he returned impressive figures of 3/29 in his four overs quote while Little remained the most inexpensive bowler as he offered just 21 runs at an economy of 5.25 and grabbed two wickets.

South Africa edge India, dent Pakistan’s semi-final berth hopes

PERTH: South African batters David Miller and Aiden Markram smashed a half-century each to power their side to chase down the 134-run target and sealed a tense five-wicket victory over India in the Super12s fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

South Africa’s win over India exerted a major dent in Pakistan’s chances to make their way to the semi-final of the mega event despite defeating the Netherlands earlier in the second match of the tripleheader.

Set to chase 134, South Africa were off to a tense start as the side lost three wickets for just 24 runs inside the power-play.

Following the early attack launched by the Indian pacers, Markram and Miller stitched a gritty 76-run partnership for the fourth wicket and anchored the run chase.

Markram scored 52 off 41 balls with the help of six boundaries and a six before falling victim to Hardik Pandya in the 16th over.

Miller remained unaffected by Markram’s dismissal and powered his side to complete a tense final-over run chase.

He top-scored for his side with an unbeaten knock of 59 in just 46 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and three sixes.

For India, Arshdeep Singh bagged two wickets, while Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin and Pandya struck out a batter each.

Batting first after winning the toss, India had a poor start to their innings as they lost half of the side for just 49 runs as captain Rohit Sharma (15), KL Rahul (9), Virat Kohli (12), Deepak Hooda (0) and Hardik Pandya (2) perished cheaply as right-arm pacer Lungi Ngidi wreaked havoc in his opening spell.

Following the slump, Yadav stood up for his team and embarked on recovery for his side as he stitched a fighting 52-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Dinesh Karthik.

Yadav was the main aggressor of the gritty stand and scored the majority of the runs.

Left-arm pacer Wayne Parnell then brought an end to Karthik’s struggling knock as he struck in the 16th over to provide his side with a much-needed breakthrough. The wicketkeeper batter could score six off 15 deliveries.

The Indian batting tail then crumbled against the strong South African bowling attack as their key batter Yadav, too, fell in the 19th over.

Yadav top-scored with a magnificent 68-run knock in just 40 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and three boundaries.

Ngidi led the bowling attack for South Africa courtesy of his astounding bowling figures of 4/29, while Parnell returned with 3/15.

Pakistan cruise past Netherlands to seal first T20I win in Australia

PERTH: Pakistan’s mainstay Mohammad Rizwan starred with a strong 49-run knock after bowlers dominated Dutch batters to help Pakistan ease past the Netherlands to achieve their first-ever T20I win on Australian soil, here on Sunday in the Super 12s Group 2 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Shadab Khan led the charge for the Green Shirt as he returned sensational figures of 3/22 in his four overs quota

Set to chase 92, Pakistan comprehensively reached the target with 37 balls to spare and for the loss of just four wickets.

Rizwan top-scored for the side with a cautious 39-ball knock and remained one run short of his fifty as he fell prey to Paul van Meerkan in the 13th over.

Skipper Babar Azam, however, remained unfortunate as he failed to make it into the double for the third consecutive time in this T20 World Cup when substitute fielder van der Merwe ran him out with a direct hit at the bowler’s end.

Following Babar’s dismissal, Fakhar Zaman, who replaced Haider Ali in the playing line-up, joined Rizwan on the crease for an anchoring partnership of 37 runs and took the scoreboard to 53/1 in 7 overs before Brandon Glover dismissed the left-handed batter in a caught-behind wicket.

Opting to bat first, Netherlands batters showcased a dismal batting performance as eight of their batters failed to enter into double figures. Apart from a brief 35-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Colin Ackermann and skipper Scott Edwards none of the batters stood up to the challenge posed by Pakistan bowlers.

Ackermann top-scored for the side with a cautious 27-ball 27 while skipper Edwards contributed 15 off 20. The duo went back one after another in the 15th and 16th over, respectively and set the alarm bells ringing for the Netherlands.

Pakistan’s main strike bowler Shaheen Afridi provided the first breakthrough in the third over as the opener Stephan Myburgh was caught at fine leg by Mohammad Wasim Jr after scoring 6 off 11 while his partner Bas de Leede retired hurt after Haris’ bouncer hit him on the grille in front of the nose in the sixth over.

Leg spinner Shadab struck on the very first of his spell as No 4 batter Tom Cooper (1 off 2) pulled straight to mid-wicket where he found Wasim Jr.

Following the dismissal of Edwards, the rest of the batters were bundled out in single digits as the wickets kept on falling at regular intervals with Rauf and Wasim Jr dominating in the death overs.

For Pakistan, apart from Shadab, Wasim Jr bagged two wickets while Shaheen, Mohammad Nawaz and Naseem took a scalp each.
