Meanwhile, uncapped opening batter Ryan Rickelton and seamer Ottniel Baartman have also earned their maiden call-ups on the back of their impressive performance during SA20.

Rickelton ended the tournament as the highest run-scorer with 530 runs at an average of 58.88 and a tremendous strike rate of 173.77.

Yuvraj Singh named as ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Ambassador

The International Cricket Council (ICC) unveiled former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Ambassador on Friday.

The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies from 1 June to 29 June.

Singh will participate in the World Cup promotional events in the United States before and during the tournament.

He will also attend the much-anticipated match between archrivals India and Pakistan in New York on 9 June.

The former all-rounder expressed his excitement about being the ambassador of the T20 World Cup and shared his best memories from the tournament.

He set the stage on fire during the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, hitting six sixes in an over against England. India went on to win the tournament by defeating Pakistan in the final.

“Some of my fondest cricketing memories have come from playing at the T20 World Cup, including hitting six sixes in an over, so it’s very exciting to be part of this edition, which is set to be the biggest one yet,” Yuvraj said.

“The West Indies is a great place to play cricket with the fans coming to watch creating a vibe that is completely unique to that part of the world, while cricket is also expanding in the USA and I’m excited to be part of that growth through the T20 World Cup.

“India’s clash against Pakistan in New York is going to be one of the biggest sporting fixtures in the world this year, so it’s a privilege to be a part of and to witness the best players in the world playing in a new stadium.”

Ben Stokes opts out of England squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024

England allrounder Ben Stokes has confirmed today that he does not wish to be considered for selection ahead of this summer’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will take place in June in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA).

The England Test captain’s primary focus is to get fully fit to bowl not only for the summer of Test cricket, which includes two three-match Test series against West Indies and Sri Lanka respectively but for all cricket in the future.

“I’m working hard and focusing on building my bowling fitness back up to fulfil a full role as an all-rounder in all formats of cricket,” Stokes said commenting on his decision.

“Opting out of the IPL and the World Cup will hopefully be a sacrifice that allows me to be the all-rounder I want to be for the foreseeable future.

“The recent Test tour of India highlighted how far behind I was from a bowling point of view after my knee surgery and nine months without bowling.

“I’m looking forward to playing for Durham in the County Championship before the start of our Test summer.

“I wish Jos (Buttler), Motty (Matthew Mott) and all the team the best of luck in defending our title.”

England’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 defence will start on 4 June against Scotland at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Notably, Ben Stokes hit the winning run in the final of the ICC World Cup 2022 against Pakistan to help England lift their second T20 World Cup title.

They will then play group matches against Australia, Oman, and Namibia in Barbados and Antigua before qualification for the Super 8s and knockout stages.

Babar Azam reinstated as Pakistan’s white-ball captain ahead of T20 World Cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday reinstated Babar Azam as the white-ball captain of the national team ahead of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be played in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA).

PCB officially announced Babar Azam’s appointment as captain on their social media accounts. “Babar Azam appointed as white-ball captain,” the PCB posted.

“Following unanimous recommendation from the PCB’s selection committee, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi has appointed Babar Azam as white-ball (ODI and T20I) captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team.”

His first assignment during his second tenure will be a five-match home T20I series against New Zealand, commencing on April 18 in Rawalpindi.

The star batter had previously led Pakistan in white-ball cricket from 2019 to 2023 before stepping down following the team’s dismal performance in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Pakistan failed to qualify for the semifinals as they finished fifth in the standings with eight points.

After his resignation, PCB appointed Shan Masood as Test captain, while Shaheen Afridi was handed responsibility to lead the T20I side.

Afridi had an unwanted start to his captaincy reign, which started with a five-match away series against New Zealand in January this year.

Pakistan succumbed to a 4-1 series defeat and Shaheen’s future as a captain straightaway came under scrutiny.

SLC denies exploiting loopholes to save Hasaranga for T20 World Cup

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has denied exploiting technical loopholes to save star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga from missing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 matches later this year.

Hasaranga on Tuesday, came out of Test retirement after the third ODI against Bangladesh and was subsequently named in the Sri Lanka squad for the Test series against the same opposition.

However, he was slapped by the International Cricket Council (ICC) with a two-match ban for breaching ICC’s Code of Conduct during the third ODI, ruling him out of the Test series, scheduled to commence on March 22.

He received a 50 per cent fine and accumulated three demerit points for his offence, which brought his total demerit points to eight in 24 months.

The all-rounder was already on five demerit points after receiving three demerit points in the third T20I against Afghanistan in Dambulla last month.

Now, with the addition of the latest demerit points, he has breached the threshold of eight demerit points, which, according to article 7.6 of the Code, have been converted into four suspension points.

The four suspension points equate to a ban from two Tests or four ODIs or T20Is, whatever comes first.

Hasaranga was named in Sri Lanka’s Test squad after coming out of retirement. As a result, he was banned from two Test matches but would have otherwise missed four T20Is in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

This raised eyebrows among the cricket circles about Hasaranga taking his retirement back to avoid missing games in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

SLC clarified that the all-rounder had expressed his desire to return to Test cricket before the third ODI against Bangladesh through an email on 16 March, owing to his improved fitness.

“It was about two weeks ago that he told us he was open to playing Tests again,” Ajantha Mendis, a member of Sri Lanka’s selection committee told ESPNcricinfo.

“We know how it looks, but this decision was taken well before the final ODI.”

Stop clock to permanently feature in ODI, T20Is from ICC T20 World Cup 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that stop clocks will be permanently used in all limited-overs international fixtures starting from the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

ICC made the usage of stop clocks mandatory on March 15 following the annual Board meetings. This rule was implemented to help save time during matches.

The rule was implemented on a trial basis during the three-match ODI series between West Indies and England in December last year.

Initially, it was decided that the trial would run for six months, starting from December 2023 and ending in April 2024.

However, the positive results of the trial led the cricket governing body to implement the stop clock rule as a playing condition for international limited-overs fixtures.

“Results presented to the Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) demonstrated that approximately 20 minutes had been saved per ODI match,” the ICC stated in a press release.

“The feature has now been added as a mandatory playing condition in all Full Member ODI and T20I matches from 1 June 2024.

“As per the stop clock rule that was trialled in men’s white-ball cricket, the fielding side is expected to start a new over within 60 seconds of the completion of the previous over.

An electronic stop clock will be displayed on the ground and the third umpire will be responsible for starting the countdown.

The clock will count from 60 seconds to zero and in case the fielding side fails to complete their over within the time limit, they will receive two warnings.

Further violations of the 60-second rule will result in a five-run penalty per incident.

“There are a few exceptions to this rule, and the clock, if already started, can be cancelled in certain situations.

“These include, when a new batter comes to the wicket between overs, an official drinks interval has been called, the umpires have approved the onfield treatment of an injury to a batter or fielder and the time lost is for any circumstances beyond the control of the fielding side,” the ICC added.

Rohit Sharma to captain India at ICC T20 World Cup 2024

Rohit Sharma will captain India at the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States and West Indies, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed.

Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid will continue as India’s head coach until the conclusion of the mega-event.

“In the 2023 (final) at Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after 10 straight wins, we won hearts,” said Jay Shah, at a function to rename the Rajkot stadium late Wednesday.

“I want to promise you that in 2024 in Barbados we will lift the trophy under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy,” he added.

Rohit Sharma will be leading India for the second time in a T20 World Cup as he previously led his side in the last World Cup in 2022.

India crashed out of the semi-final as England registered a thumping ten-wicket victory and then went on to win the final as well.

Rohit Sharma stayed out of the T20I format since then, before making a comeback in the format during the recent Afghanistan series.

Hardik Pandya led India in T20I during Sharma’s absence, while Suryakumar Yadav took charge in the T20I series against Australia after the 50-over World Cup 2023.

Notably, Rohit Sharma led India to the final of the ICC World Cup 2023 at home where they lost against Australia, extending India’s trophy drought.

The last global tournament team India won was in 2013 when they clinched the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni.

Meanwhile, Rajkot Stadium was renamed the Niranjan Shah Cricket Stadium, in honour of a former BCCI secretary, ahead of the third Test against England starting Thursday.

It was previously called the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Kieron Pollard named in England’s coaching setup for T20 World Cup 2024

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has included former West Indies captain Kieron Pollard in their coaching staff for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to be played in West Indies and United States of America (USA).

England roped in Pollard to help them with local knowledge of the conditions in the Caribbean during their defence of the T20 World Cup title which they won in 2022 under Jos Buttler.

“Pollard will join the England Men’s team specifically for the T20 World Cup as an assistant coach and to provide expertise of local conditions,” said ECB in a press release.

Notably, England won their first ICC trophy in the West Indies by defeating arch-rivals Australia in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2010 under Paul Collingwood.

Meanwhile, West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard is a veteran in T20 cricket, having played 637 matches and amassing over 12000 runs at an impressive strike rate of 150.58.

Pollard has also picked over 300 wickets in T20 cricket at an average of 25.19.

He is the only player to play more than 600 T20 games and the third-highest run-scorer in T20 cricket.

Pollard was also part of the West Indies squad during their victorious ICC T20 World Cup 2012 campaign in Sri Lanka.

He has also served as the batting coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians since 2022, after winning five IPL titles with them as a player.

Meanwhile, England have recently concluded their tour of the Caribbean, where they lost the ODI series 2-1 and the T20I series 3-2 against the West Indies.

The much-anticipated clash between arch-rivals Pakistan and India during the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to be played on 09 June 2024 in New York, a report suggested.

The match is likely to be a day match considering the difference in timezone to cater to the South Asian audience.

Notably, this is the first time that the United States of America (USA) has secured the right to host an ICC event.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be jointly hosted by the USA and West Indies.

The official schedule of the event has not been announced yet, however, reports suggest that the next edition of the T20 World Cup will run from 4 June 2024 to 30 June 2024.

Grand Prairie in Dallas, Broward County in Florida and Nassau County in New York will be T20 World Cup 2024 venues as the event is staged in the USA for the first time.

In this connection, an agreement has been reached for the construction of a 34,000-seat modular stadium in Eisenhower Park, a purpose-built sports and events park in Nassau County, New York, on awarding the required permit next month.

The existing venues in Grand Prairie and Broward County will be increased in size by modular stadium solutions to expand seating, media and premium hospitality areas subject to final agreement.

A number of other venues around the USA, including George Mason University in Washington, the new home of MLC team Washington Freedom, have also been identified as potential venues for pre-event matches.

It is pertinent to mention that the upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup will feature a record 20 teams and will be played using a different format.

The United States of America (USA) and West Indies earned direct qualification by virtue of being hosts, while the other teams include, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, England, India, Ireland, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the first-timer Uganda.
