POTCHEFSTROOM: England crushed Rwanda by a staggering margin of 139 runs as they bowled out the weak side for a paltry 45-run total in the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, here on Thursday.

Electing to bat first, openers Grace Scrivens and Liberty Heap dominated Rwanda bowlers with a magnificent first wicket stand of 124 runs and steered the English side to a mammoth total of 185 runs for the loss of five wickets.

Skipper Scrivens played a fine knock of 51 from 43 balls while Heap blasted 64 off 35, laced with 12 boundaries, to drift England in command.

Rwanda, however, underwent a nightmarish batting collapse during the chase as none of their batters crossed the single-digit except for Henriette Ishimwe, who made 12.

England unfolded the carnage thanks to two wickets each for Alexa Stonehouse, Hannah Baker, Ryana MacDonald-Gay, and Davina Perrin.

With their third consecutive win in Group B, England confirmed their place in the Super six stage of the tournament, where three teams from each group will qualify.

Batters power England to edge Pakistan in U19 Women’s T20 WC

POTCHEFSTROOM: England batters Seren Smale and Ryana MacDonald-Gay played vital knocks to power their side to 156/7 before bowlers powered the side to a massive 53-run victory in the ongoing ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

After opting to bat first, England managed to pile up a competitive 156/7 at the back of brilliant knocks by Smale and MacDonald-Gay.

England, after getting off to a shaky start, lost wickets at regular intervals but that did not halt their march towards a big total, thanks to valuable contributions from their batters.

Opening batter and skipper Grace Scrivens laid a solid foundation with her 21-ball 24 before Smale anchored the innings with her sensible knock.

Smale top-scored for her side with 37 off 34 deliveries and hit six boundaries.

Despite Smale top-scoring, MacDonald remained the pick of the batters for England as she struck a quickfire 35 off just 22 balls, hitting three boundaries and a six.

For Pakistan, Anosha Nasir, Zaib-un-Nisa and Areesha Noor picked up two wickets each while Rida Aslam made one scalp.

Set to chase 157, Pakistan could only accumulate 103/5 in their set of overs with only opening batter Shawaal Zulfiqar and skipper Syeda Aroob Shah pushing for the pursuit.

Shawaal made a gritty 25 amid Pakistan’s horrible start before falling in the ninth over.

The right-handed opener also put on a fighting 20-run partnership with Aroob, who remained unbeaten with 34 in 36 deliveries.

Besides them, none of their batters could turn things around for the green shirts and the side was restricted to 103/5 and thus handed a massive victory to England.

Smale also proved her mettle with the ball as she picked up 2/10 while Hannah Baker and Grace Scrivens struck out a batter each.

Meanwhile, in the Group C clash of the ongoing world cup, dominant West Indies thrashed Indonesia by a mammoth 77 runs to go on top in the group standings.

POTCHEFSTROOM: Rwanda’s Henriette Ishimwe returned with splendid figures of 4/13 to aid in her side’s astounding triumph over Zimbabwe by 39 runs in the Group B fixture of the ongoing ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

Set to defend a mere 120 in the allotted 20 overs, Rwanda’s bowlers script an astonishing comeback to bundle out Zimbabwe for a paltry 80 runs.

Despite a shaky start, Zimbabwe at one stage were 60/2 in pursuit before losing the remaining eight wickets for just 20 runs.

Opener Natasha Mtomba and top-order batter Kelly Ndiraya struck a fighting 20 each, while the remaining batters seemed clueless against Rwanda’s bowling attack.

Notably, eight Zimbabwean batters failed to amass double figures while half of them perished for a golden duck.

Henriette led the bowling attack for Rwanda with four wickets while Zurufat Ishimwe bagged two. Gisele Ishimwe, Rosine Irera and Geovanis Uwase, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

Put into bat first, Rwanda too, had a dismal display with the bat as they could only amass 119/8 in the allotted overs.

Rwanda’s top three batters Merveille Uwase (18), Cynthia Tuyizere (30) and skipper Gisele Ishimwe (34) remained the only notable run-getters while their middle and lower-order batters perished cheaply in single figures.

Chipo Moyo was the pick of the bowlers for Zimbabwe as she claimed three wickets while Kudzai Chigora bagged two.

It is pertinent to mention that current Rwanda’s side are the first team to represent the country at a cricket world cup.

Besides the duo, the rest of the Irish batters failed to amass double figures.

Natasha Codyre was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand with 3/6 while Tash Wakelin claimed 2/12. Kayley Knight, Olivia Anderson and Abigail Hotton struck out a batter each.

In response, New Zealand eased through the pursuit in the seventh over after losing just one wicket.

BENONI: Shweta Sehrawat and skipper Shafali Verma continued their top-notch form in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup to help India seal a comprehensive win over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday.

Shweta, who scored an unbeaten 92 against South Africa on Saturday, continued her exceptional form as she scored 74 not out against UAE and played a pivotal role in India’s second consecutive triumph in the group stage.

Put into bat first, India piled a mammoth 219/3 in their allotted 20 overs courtesy of a strong batting display by their top-three batters.

Batting first, Indian openers Shweta and skipper Shafali laid a solid foundation for a big total as they accumulated 111 runs in the ninth over.

Both batters took on the UAE bowlers with great dominance but Shafali was the core aggressor of their astonishing stand as she struck 78 off just 34 balls, hitting 12 boundaries and four sixes.

Following the skipper’s dismissal, wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh joined Shweta in the middle and made sure the side do not lose momentum as she added further to the misery of the UAE bowlers with her quickfire knock of 49 runs in just 29 balls before falling in the 19th over with India already amassing 200-run mark.

Meanwhile, Shweta remained unbeaten on 74 as India finished at 219/3. She faced 49 deliveries and struck 10 boundaries.

For UAE, Indhuja Nandakumar, Mahika Gaur and Samaira Dharnidharka struck out a batter each.

Set to chase a mammoth 220, the UAE batting lineup failed completely and could only manage to score 97/5 in 20 overs.

Opening batter Lavanya Keny (24) and Gaur (26) remained the only two notable run-getters while the rest seemed clueless against the strong Indian bowling attack.

Parshavi Chopra, Mannat Kashyap, Titas Sadhu and Shabnam MD made one scalp each for India.

In another Group D fixture, hosts South Africa thrashed Scotland by 44 runs to secure their maiden victory in the mega event.

Following the outcome of both fixtures, India continued to lead the group standings with four points, while South Africa surpassed UAE to secure the second spot with a better net run rate.

Prottasha stars as Bangladesh edge Sri Lanka in U19 Women’s T20 WC

BENONI: Bangladesh batter Afia Prottasha and Shorna Akter struck half-centuries to aid their side to thrash Sri Lanka by 10 runs in the ongoing ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

Put into bat first, Bangladesh piled a commendable 165/2 in their quota of 20 overs at the back of brilliant half-centuries from Prottasha and Shorna.

Bangladesh openers Prottasha and Misty Shaha gave them a solid start with a 75-run opening stand with the former leading the charge.

Sri Lanka finally found a moment to cherish in the 12th over when Rashmi Nethranjali castled Prottasha before Shaha got run out in the same over as Bangladesh slipped to 79/2.

Prottasha remained the top-scorer for her side with 53 off 43 balls, hitting five boundaries and a six, while Shaha could score 14 off 24.

Following the slump, wicketkeeper-batter Dilara Akter and Shorna charged on the Sri Lankan bowlers and added an unbeaten 86-run stand in just 51 balls, propelling Bangladesh to a decent total.

Shorna was the core aggressor of the match-defining partnership as she remained unbeaten with her quickfire 50 off just 28 deliveries including three fours and two sixes, while Dilara struck 36 off 27 deliveries.

Nethranjali remained the only Sri Lankan bowler to find a breakthrough as she returned with figures of 1/30, while the rest went wicketless.

Set to chase 166, Sri Lanka fell 10 runs short despite the fifties from captain Vishmi Gunaratne and Dewmi Vihanga.

Earlier, the side had a dismal start to their run chase as they lost both their openers Nethmi Senarathna and Sumudu Nisansala cheaply; causing the side to slip at 24/2 in the fourth over.

Following the slump, Sri Lankan skipper Gunaratne and Vihanga anchored the run chase as they raised 96 runs for the third wicket but remained too slow.

The mounting run rate left the duo with no choice but to slog hard at almost every ball which resulted in Vihanga falling briefly after her half-century. She scored 55 off 44 balls and smashed nine boundaries including two sixes.

Following her departure, none of the batters could contribute significantly in the run chase and Sri Lanka, consequently, fell 10 runs short with Gunaratne unbeaten on 60.

She top-scored for her side with 60 off 54 balls with the help of eight boundaries and a six but was unable to steer her side to glory.

Marufa Akter led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with 2/19 while Disha Biswas struck out a batter.

Meanwhile, in another Group B clash, Australia thrash the United States of America (USA) by nine wickets and 68 balls to spare.

Putting the USA into bat, Australian bowlers ran through the USA batting lineup and bundled them for a paltry 64 in the 16th over.

Maggie Clark took two wickets for just 14, while Amy Smith, Lucy Hamilton and Ella Hayward made one scalp each.

Set to chase a paltry 65, Australia eased through by losing just one wicket in pursuit and amassed the total in just the ninth over.

POTCHEFSTROOM: Eyman Fatima played a crucial knock of unbeaten 65 from 60 balls after lively fielding efforts put Pakistan on top as they beat Rwanda by eight wickets in their opening match of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, here on Sunday.

The young Pakistani women’s side dominated the opponents with superb all-round performances on the field to reduce Rwanda to 106/8 in the allotted 20 overs.

Pakistan, however, reached the target with 13 balls to spare as Fatima and skipper Aroob Shah led the batting charge after the Green Shirts were once stuck at 36/2 in the 8th over.

Aroob made an unbeaten 20 runs from 21 balls while Fatima smashed 11 boundaries during her match-winning half-century.

Opting to bat first, Rwanda underwent complete batting chaos in the middle after skipper Gisele Ishimwe and opener Cynthia Tuyizere stitched a valiant second-wicket partnership of 52 runs.

Following an early scare in the first over when Areesha Noor Bhatti cleaned up Merveille Uwase in the first over, Ishimwe and Tuyizere tried to bring sanity before Pakistan triggered a batting collapse with three run outs and a wicket each to Zaib-un-Nisa, Anosha Nasir, Areesha and Aroob Shah.

With a cautious knock of 45-ball 40, Ishimwe top-scored for the side with seven of their batters failing to cross the double figures. Tuyizere, on the other hand, made 21 from 37 balls.

The inaugural edition of the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup kicked off with a major upset as Bangladesh thumped Australia by seven wickets with 12 balls to spare.

After opting to bat first, Australia could raise a skimpy 130/5 in their allotted 20 overs despite a cautious half-century by Claire Moore.

Bangladesh bowlers put on a dominating show as they kept things tight for Australia right from the start as openers Kate Pelle (5) and Paris Bowdler (7) perished cheaply at a combined score of 22.

Moore and Ella Hayward then attempted to anchor the innings with a gritty 76-run partnership for the third wicket but remained too slow as they conceded 79 balls in the process.

Moore, who brought up her half-century in 47 balls, perished briefly after and remained the top-scorer for Australia with 52 off 51 deliveries.

Australia then lost a couple of more wickets in the death overs with Hayward also departing after a cautious 35-run knock in 39 balls.

The rest of the Australian batters fell clueless against the Bangladesh attack which halted the side from amassing a big total.

Bangladesh in response looked more comfortable in their 131-run pursuit as they lost just three wickets in the expedition.

Unlike the final result, the start to Bangladesh’s pursuit remained quite rough for the Asian side as they lost their opener, Misty Saha, for a golden duck.

Opening batter Afia Prottasha and wicketkeeper-batter Dilara Akter then anchored the run chase with a solid 66-run partnership for the second wicket before both perished in the same over.

Right-arm pacer Chloe Ainsworth provided a much-needed breakthrough to Australia as she removed Dilara and Prottasha on the first and last delivery respectively.

Dilara remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with 40 off 42 deliveries, while Prottasha scored 24 in 22 balls.

Following their departure, Shorna Akter and Sumaiya Akter then charged on the Australian bowlers and stitched a match-winning 51-run partnership before steering their side to glory in 18 overs.
