WWC 2022: Dottin shines as West Indies beat New Zealand in a thriller

MOUNT MAUNGANUI: West Indian pacer Deandra Dottin held her nerve calm to defend six off the final over to steer her side to a thrilling victory by three runs in the first match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 against the hosts New Zealand, here on Friday.

The first match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 went down to the wire with the West Indies emerging out as victorious.

The home side needed just six off the final over with their set batters Katey Martin and Jess Kerr on the crease. The West Indian skipper Stafanie Taylor picked Dottin to bowl the penultimate over and she, after removing both the set batters steered her side to a thrilling victory. Dottin’s two wickets and a run-out at the non-striker ended New Zealand’s hopes to taste their maiden triumph in the opener.

Set to chase 260, the hosts New Zealand could only manage to score 256 before being bowled out in the final over.

The White Ferns were off to a poor start to the run chase; losing their first wicket for a mere 14 as Suzie Bates departed after scoring cheaply. Following her departure, the side kept losing wickets at a consistent rate.

Sophie Devine, on the other hand, stood firm at the other end and kept the scoreboard ticking single-handedly and went on to score a magnificent century. She appeared top-notch before perishing in the 45th over after scoring 108 off 127 balls with the help of 10 boundaries.

Apart from Sophie, Katey and Kerr showed resistance down the order; scoring a 40-runs partnership, which eventually broke in the final over as Dottin trapped Katey in legs for 44. Similarly, Jess too fell short of the right-arm pacer as she lost her wicket on the second last bowl of the over after scoring a gritty 25.

For West Indies, Dottin, Anisa Mohammed, Hayley Matthews bagged two wickets each, while Shakera Salman and Chinelle Henry struck out a batter each.

Batting first, West Indies finished at 259/9 in the allotted 50 overs, thanks to Matthews’s magnificent century. The right-handed batter carried her bat till the 45th over and scored 119 off 128 balls with the help of 16 boundaries and a six, while the rest of the batters also made valuable contributions to take their side to a commendable total.

For New Zealand, Lea Tanuhu claimed three, while Jess took two. Hannah Rowe and Amelia Kerr struck out a batter each.

CHRISTCHURCH: English skipper Heather Knight has revealed her favourite Pakistan cricketer, said she is a big fan of Mohammad Rizwan.

Knight, who is here for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, made the revelation in an interactive session on the official Twitter handle of England Cricket.

When questioned about her favourite Pakistan Super League (PSL) team, she said Multan Sultans and that Rizwan is her favourite player.

It is pertinent to mention here that the South African woman cricketer Marizanne Kapp also termed Rizwan as a ‘brilliant cricketer’ last year.

ICC unveils Star-studded commentary panel for Women’s WC 2022

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled a star-studded commentary panel for the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup 2022, Pakistan’s Sana Mir also included.

In a press release, shared on the official website of the ICC, the cricket council revealed the star-studded commentary panel which will provide expert opinion during the eight-team tournament in New Zealand from 4 March to 3 April.

The commentary panel includes recognizable voices of Naseer Hussain, Ian Smith, Simon Doull, former Pakistan captain Sana, India’s Sanjay Manjrekar, and Alan Wilkins.

The panel also includes two ICC Hall of Famers – Debbie Hockley and Lisa Sthalekar, while Anjum Chopra, Mel Jones, Lesley Murdoch, Natalie Germanos, Lydia Greenway, Stacy-Ann King, WV Raman, and Kass Naidoo will also be commentating during the global event.

It is pertinent to mention here that the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 will begin on Friday with the hosts New Zealand taking on West Indies in Mount Maunganui.

Australia’s star all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner tests COVID positive

CHRISTCHURCH: Australia’s star all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has tested COVID-19 positive ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022, starting from tomorrow.

The Australian side, jolted by a fresh blow on the eve of the Women’s World Cup as their in-form all-rounder Ashleigh has contracted the widely spread virus.

According to cricket.com.au, Ashleigh will miss at least the first two matches of Australia’s ODI World Cup campaign after her contraction to the virus.

Ashleigh will now isolate in Christchurch for ten days following New Zealand government health rules, which will keep her out of the action in Australia’s games against England on Saturday and Pakistan on Tuesday.

The star-allrounder is however likely to make her way back into the side before Australia’s fixture against New Zealand on March 13 in Wellington.

Fast bowling allrounder Annabel Sutherland and spin-bowling allrounder, Grace Harris are probable to replace Ashleigh in the side’s first two matches of the World Cup campaign.

It is worth mentioning here that the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 will begin on Friday with hosts New Zealand taking on West Indies in Mount Maunganui.

Pakistan beat Bangladesh in ICC Women’s WC Warm-up match

LINCOLN: Pakistan sealed a thrilling victory over Bangladesh by seven runs in their second warm-up match of the ICC Women’s World Cup, here on Wednesday.

Pakistan’s young pacer Fatima Sana, alongside Nashra Sandhu wreaked havoc over the Bangladesh batting line-up; dismissing the latter on 194.

Set to chase a revised target of 201, Bangladesh had a poor start to their innings; losing two wickets for a mere 29 runs as Sharmin Akhter and Shamima Sultana walked back to the pavilion after scoring cheaply.

Fargana Hoque and the skipper Nigar Sultana anchored the innings with a gritty 42-runs partnership for the third wicket before Sultana perished in the 18th over after scoring 15.

Hoque then put on another handy partnership with the newly joined Rumana Ahmed. The pair appeared solid and posted a magnificent 49-runs partnership for the fourth wicket. In the 29th over, however, Fatima castled Rumana for 30; triggering a match-defining collapse.

Following the dismissal, the side began to lose wickets at an alarming rate and in the end were bowled out for 194 in the run chase.

For the green shirts, Fatima bagged four wickets, while Nashra claimed three. Aiman Anwer and Ghulam Fatima, on the other hand, struck out a batter each.

Batting first, Pakistan managed to finish at 199/7 in the allotted 42 overs, thanks to the brilliant knocks of Aliya Riaz and Javeria Khan.

Coming out to bat, Pakistan had a similar start to Bangladesh; losing the first three wickets with just 38 runs on the scoreboard. Javeria and the skipper Bismah Maroof then anchored the innings with a magnificent 73-runs partnership for the fourth wicket.

The pair appeared solid until the 26th over as Javeria departed after scoring a brilliant 44 off 62 balls, laced with five boundaries. Soon after, Bismah also made her way back to the pavilion after managing to score 32. She faced 44 balls and smashed two boundaries.

Following this, the green shirts slipped to 120-6 in the 29th over as Omaima Sohail was dismissed cheaply for a mere two.

Aliya and Fatima then stood up for their team; putting on a valiant 66-runs partnership for the seventh wicket. Both the batters played brilliant knocks to bolster the total. Fatima scored 29 off 33 balls; including two boundaries, while Aliya remained unbeaten with his 45 with the help of seven boundaries.

For Bangladesh, Fariha Trisna and Ritu Moni bagged three wickets each, while Nahid Akter made one scalp.

CHRISTCHURCH: Nida Dar and Aliya Riaz scored fifties after Nashra Sandhu bagged four wickets to assist Pakistan defeat New Zealand by four wickets in their first warm-up match of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2022, here on Sunday.

Batting first the home side – New Zealand could only manage to score 229 in the first innings as Sandhu’s brilliance with the ball bowled out White Ferns for a paltry score in 45 overs.

The home side was off to a poor start; losing two wickets for a mere 11 as Diana Baig and Fatima Sana removed the openers Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine respectively.

Following the early horror, Amy Satterthwaite and Maddy Green batted brilliantly and partnered strongly for the third wicket. The pair appeared solid; both scoring half-centuries and putting on a magnificent 131-runs partnership Green made her way back to the pavilion.

The right-handed batter played a gritty knock of 58 runs and faced 69 deliveries, she also smashed six boundaries in the course of his sensational knock. Satterthwaite, on the other hand, stood firm and kept the scoreboard ticking while her side was losing wickets at the other end.

In the 34th over Satterthwaite also fell victim to the match-defining collapse and she walked back to the pavilion after scoring 80 off 85 balls; smashing seven boundaries.

The lower-order batter Jess Kerr then fought back for her time and scored a quick 34 off 27 balls down the order with the help of three boundaries.

For Pakistan, Sandhu bagged four wickets, while Sana and Ghulam Fatima claimed two each. Dar and Diana, on the other hand, struck out a batter each.

Set to chase 230, Pakistan chased down the total in the last over, thanks to the fifties of Dar and Diana. The pair put on a match-winning 89-runs partnership for the sixth wicket and made the run chase easier in the end.

Earlier, Pakistan too, had an unwanted start in the run chase as the side lost their first wicket with just four runs on the scoreboard. Sidra Ameen and Javeria Khan then recorded a 42-runs partnership for the second wicket before Sidra perished in the 15th over.

The right-handed batter scored a gritty 34 off 47 balls, laced with four boundaries. Her partner Javeria, who was a touch too slow in the proceedings also made her way back to the pavilion in the next over after managing to score just eight off 29 balls.

The skipper Bismah Maroof and Omaimah Sohail then put on a brief 47-runs partnership before Omaimah perished in the 27th over after scoring 31, while Bismah made her way back in the 34th over; scoring 28 runs.

Dar and Riaz then steered the side to the victory with their match-winning partnership. Dar scored a magnificent 54 off 59 balls; smashing four boundaries, while Riaz remained unbeaten and top-scored with her quick 62 off 52 balls with the help of eight boundaries.

Pakistan Women’s team hold practice session ahead of World Cup

CHRISTCHURCH: Pakistan Women’s Cricket Team held a practice session to race up the preparation for the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup, scheduled in March.

The world-cup bound squad held the practice session after the completion of their mandatory isolation period.

In the first training session of the team, the players participated in physical training and fielding drills.

It is worth mentioning here that Pakistan’s women team will start their world cup campaign against the arch-rival India on March 6 at Bay Oval. The green shirts will play seven matches against the remaining teams.

The top four teams from the group of eight participants will then qualify for the Semi-finals.

CHRISTCHURCH: Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup has arrived in the country to participate in the mega event, set to kick off on March 4.

The world cup bound squad after landing in the country will undergo a mandatory 10-day isolation period and will then be able to participate in the practice sessions.

Pakistan’s women team will start their world cup campaign against the arch-rival India on March 6 at Bay Oval. The green shirts will play seven matches against the remaining teams.

The top four teams from the group of eight participants will then qualify for the Semi-finals.

Pakistan’s Women’s World Cup squad to leave for New Zealand tonight

KARACHI: Pakistan’s 18-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup will depart for New Zealand tonight.

The world-cup bound Pakistan’s squad will leave for New Zealand in the early hours tonight, all the squad members and officials have tested negative for the COVID-19.

The team will reach Auckland first, and will then travel to Christchurch via chartered flight and will then have to undergo a mandatory 10-days isolation period.

Following the departure, the captain of the Pakistan Women’s cricket team – Bismah Maroof talked to the presser and expressed hope to qualify for the semi-final of the mega event.

“We have worked really hard in the training camp. The effort is to reach the semi-final of the event,” she said.

Bismah also shared her views on the opening match of the green shirts against the arch-rival India and said the team will take the field with a different mindset.

“We have to play well from the first match in this type of tournament. Our first match is against India and we will play with a different mindset,” she said.

Bismah also claimed that the team is currently in the good form, while also admitted that the conditions are different in New Zealand.

“Our team is currently in good form and is doing really well. The team has improved a lot in my absence,” she said.

“Conditions in New Zealand are different, but we will try to adjust accordingly,” she added.

Bismah also termed bowling as the strength of the side and is hopeful that the bowlers would do well for the team in the global event. Whereas, she also admitted that the side lacks options for the wicket-keeper and urged to develop more wicket-keepers in the future.

The returning captain went on to add that all the players have been informed about their roles and it may help the team to perform well in the upcoming world cup.

It is worth mentioning here that the upcoming Women’s World Cup 2022, will kick off on March 4 with the hosts New Zealand taking on the West Indies in the curtain-raiser, while the final of the event will be played at Hagley Oval on April 3.

Ghulam Fatima joins the squad after recovering from COVID-19

KARACHI: Pakistan’s leg spinner – Ghulam Fatima has joined the ongoing training camp of the  Pakistan women’s national cricket team for the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup in March.

Fatima, who contracted the widely spread virus the previous week has now recovered from the virus. She has completed the mandatory isolation period and also returned a negative PCR test.

Furthermore, the wicketkeeper batter – Sidra Nawaz also fell victim to COVID-19 and she also joined the squad earlier this week after her recovery.

It is apropos to mention here that the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 will kick off on March 4, while New Zealand will be hosting the mega event. Pakistan, on the other hand, will start their campaign on March 6 against the arch-rivals India.
