Salman Butt picks Ben Stokes over Pakistan icon in all-time ODI XI

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has picked England all-rounder Ben Stokes over legendary Imran Khan in his all-time ODI XI.

Appearing on a sports podcast, Butt was asked to pick an all-time ODI XI, with no more than two players from one country.

The southpaw picked star players from India, West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and England. He chose Ben Stokes as captain while Proteas batting maestro AB de Villiers was slotted in as an opener and wicket-keeper.

The middle order featured Brian Lara, Viv Richards, Kumar Sangakara, and Virat Kohli.

Butt’s bowling attack combined spin and pace: Abdul Qadir and Muttiah Muralitharan provided the spin options, while Wasim Akram led the fast bowling unit alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Jacques Kallis, with Stokes offering an additional seam option.

However, the most notable omission was Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan.

Explaining his decision, Salman Butt pointed to the balance of the side.

“Two spinners, three genuine fast bowlers — and because Jacques Kallis also bowled at 140 km/h, plus there’s Ben Stokes as well,” he said.

When asked about leaving Imran Khan out, Butt praised his status, alongside highlighting the team’s needs and modern-day cricket.

“Yes, he didn’t fit into this team. As an all-rounder, Ben Stokes was my choice,” he explained.

“He couldn’t find a place, what can we do? I’m not denying Imran Khan’s greatness—he’s a far superior cricketer, and Pakistan has probably produced very few players better than him. But if you look at the context and also consider today’s cricket, it’s not the same as the era in which he excelled,” he explained.

“If you bring any of those players into modern cricket, even one of them, you have to consider everything — fitness levels, their performances over time, their match-winning ability, their leadership, their multiple roles. That’s how I looked at it when I made my ODI XI,” Butt added.

He further clarified his picks, explaining that he had picked players with modern-day cricket parameters in mind.

“Yes, I was asked for an ODI XI, but I tried to consider players across generations. From India, I picked Bumrah and Virat Kohli. Now, of course, people will ask — where is Tendulkar? But the parameters were already given. You have to see how players would also fit into modern cricket,” he concluded.

Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara, Viv Richards, Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes (C), AB de Villiers (WK), Jacques Kallis, Abdul Qadir, Muttiah Muralitharan, Wasim Akram, Jasprit Bumrah

Lahore Qalandars CEO clears air on Imran Khan’s role in Shaheen Afridi’s captaincy

Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana has finally addressed the long-standing speculation surrounding the appointment of Shaheen Shah Afridi as captain and whether former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan had a hand in it.

Shaheen, just 21 at the time, was a surprising choice when Lahore Qalandars named him captain in 2021.

In an exclusive chat with a local sports outlet, Atif Rana clarified that the decision to hand over the reins to Shaheen had nothing to do with Imran Khan.

“Shaheen was made captain by Sameen [Rana],” Atif revealed. “Our team think tank took that decision collectively, and Sameen played a key role in it.”

He explained that while they did meet Imran Khan, who was Prime Minister at the time, the meeting happened after the captaincy decision had already been made.

“We had a meeting with Imran Khan after we made Shaheen Afridi the captain,” Atif said. “At that time, Imran Khan praised our decision and told Shaheen, ‘If you keep playing like this, you will rule world cricket for the next 8 to 10 years.’”

Atif Rana recalled an interesting take from the 1992 World Cup-winning captain. He also shared that even though Imran wasn’t involved in the actual decision-making, his validation meant a lot to the Qalandars camp.

“Imran Khan said he doesn’t consider batsmen as captains, he believes a true captain is a bowler,” he shared. “Hearing such words from such a legend was very special for us and for Shaheen as well.”

Prior to appointing Shaheen Afridi as captain, the franchise had endured a dismal run in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), finishing at the bottom in five out of six seasons from 2016 to 2021.

But the young pacer turned the tide, leading the Qalandars to their maiden PSL title in 2022 and remarkably defending it in 2023, making them the first team in the league’s history to win back-to-back titles.

Wasim Akram reveals his top three Pakistan cricketers of all time

Legendary pacer Wasim Akram has recently unveiled his list of the top three cricketers of all time from Pakistan, which also includes 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan.

Akram, who was commentating during the recently concluded three-match ODI series between Pakistan and Australia, was asked to name the top three Pakistani cricketers.

The former pacer was urged to pick himself, considering his legendary status in Pakistan’s cricketing history, however, he opted against it. He picked his long-time bowling partner Waqar Younis at number three.

“Look, I’ve been told I might go off the script here. I’ve been told that I have to pick myself up, and I’m a bit embarrassed to do that. But number three, I pick Waqar Younis,” Akram said.

Meanwhile, on number two, Wasim Akram picked legendary batter Javed Miandad, who is considered one of the greatest batters of all time.

“Number two is great Javed Miandad. I mean, every time you talk about greats coming out of Pakistan, Javed Miandad, his name is right up there,” he stated.

For the number one spot, Akram picked Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to their first-ever World Cup glory in 1992.

The former captain highlighted Imran’s impact on the game during a time when every team featured a legendary all-rounder like Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee, and Kapil Dev.

“It’s got to be Imran Khan. I’ve seen him in his prime days as a cricketer. I mean, he was a proper all-rounder. That era was the allrounder era—Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee, Imran Khan, and then Kapil Dev from India,” he concluded.
