Ravichandran Ashwin set to rejoin team in ongoing England Test: BCCI

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will rejoin the team on Sunday’s day four of the third Test against England after he left midway through the match due to a family emergency, the country’s cricket board said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India said Ashwin “will continue to contribute towards the team’s cause in the ongoing Test match” in Rajkot after the player had earlier flown back to his hometown Chennai.

Ashwin will be available to bowl as soon as he is needed despite having spent all of day three off the field on Saturday.

According to the game’s playing conditions, the umpires can waive the requirement for a player to spend as much time back on the field as they spent off it before bowling if their absence was for “wholly acceptable reasons, which shall not include illness or internal injury”.

Ashwin, 37, had to leave the match on Friday’s day two, hours after becoming just the ninth bowler to reach 500 Test wickets.

The off-spinner dismissed Zak Crawley for 15 for his milestone, joining fellow spinner Anil Kumble (619) as the second Indian to achieve the feat.

India bowled England out for 319 to take a handy lead of 126 as their bowlers, led by Mohammed Siraj, delivered in Ashwin’s absence as India were left with 10 players to bat and bowl.

Ashwin’s fellow spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each.

The five-match series is level at 1-1 after England won the opener, but India bounced back in the second match.

Jonny Bairstow bags unwanted Test record against India

RAJKOT: England batter Jonny Bairstow on Saturday set an unwanted Test record against India in the ongoing third Test of the five-match series.

The right-handed batter now has eight ducks, the most by any batter against India in Tests after getting dismissed by spinner Kuldeep Yadav on day three of the ongoing third Test at Rajkot’s Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Notably, Jonny Bairstow has been struggling against India lately. He managed scored only 98 runs in the past five innings at an average of 19.60 without scoring a half-century.

On the other hand, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a rapid hundred before retiring hurt as India stretched their overall lead to 322 with eight wickets in hand to take control of the third test against England on Saturday.

The hosts are left with 10 players for the rest of the match after Ravichandran Ashwin withdrew on Friday night due to a family emergency.

Mohammed Siraj (4-84) and Kuldeep Yadav (2-77) made up for the off-spinner’s absence as they combined to skittle out England – who had started the day on a solid 207-2 – for 319 in reply to India’s first innings total of 445.

India finished day three on 196-2 but Yashasvi Jaiswal, struggling with a back spasm, retired hurt after his scintillating 104, which included five sixes and nine fours.

Shubman Gill was batting on 65 with nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav on three at the other end.
There was no inkling of England’s batting meltdown when they resumed play with eight wickets left at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

For many, it was Joe Root’s debatable reverse scoop when on 18 – attempted against India’s premier bowler Jasprit Bumrah – that shifted the momentum in the hosts’ favour.

Joe Root has not been in great form in this series, and his lean run continued as Yashasvi Jaiswal took the tricky catch at second slip. It was the ninth time in 21 test innings that the former England skipper has fallen to his Indian nemesis.

Kuldeep Yadav bowled a terrific spell that had not just the English batters but even India wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel guessing which way the ball would turn.

The left-arm wrist spinner trapped Jonny Bairstow lbw for a duck and was pleasantly surprised when his ordinary delivery ended Ben Duckett’s blistering 153, which contained two sixes and 23 fours.

Spilled by Rohit Sharma in the slip before he completed 150, Ben Duckett slapped a half-tracker from Kuldeep to Gill at cover. England were pushed further on to the back foot after the lunch break when they lost two wickets in two balls.

Skipper Ben Stokes (41) slog-swept Ravindra Jadeja to Bumrah, while Ben Foakes (13) was snapped up at mid-on by Rohit.

Mohammed Siraj (4-84) went on to york Rehan Ahmed and James Anderson as England gave up their last five wickets for a paltry 20 runs.

Joe Root dismissed Rohit Sharma for 19 when India came out to bat in their second innings but Jaiswal tore into the England attack to swell India’s lead.

The left-hander brought up his hundred with a four off Mark Wood and then dropped his bat, removed his gloves and stood in the middle blowing kisses and looking skywards in celebration.

Shubman Gill brought up his fifty soon after that with a six off Mark Wood as India threatened to bat England out of the contest.

Yashasvi Jaiswal ton keeps India in dominant position against England

Yashasvi Jaiswal retired hurt after hitting an attacking century to extend India’s lead over England to 322 after the tourists’ batting collapse in the third Test on Saturday.

India reached 196-2 in their second innings at stumps on day three in Rajkot with Shubman Gill (65) and nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav (three) batting at the close of play.

India have been left with 10 players to bat and bowl after Ashwin departed the match late Friday due to a family emergency. Devdutt Padikkal came in as a substitute fielder.

Jaiswal, struggling with his back, retired hurt on 104, and the next man Rajat Patidar was out for a duck from 10 balls.

Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj led the bowling charge with figures of 4-84 to help bowl out England for 319 after the visitors collapsed from 299-5.

Skipper Rohit Sharma departed early on 19, but the left-handed Jaiswal stood strong to build the innings along with Gill before the opener changed gears.

Jaiswal smashed veteran pace bowler James Anderson for six and two fours on successive balls and kept up the charge against opposition spinners with his sweep and reverse sweep.

He raised his third Test ton in just his seventh match with a boundary off fast bowler Mark Wood as he jumped, roared and blew kisses to an applauding crowd.

The 22-year-old, who hit a match-winning 209 in the previous Test, leads the series batting with 435 runs after his 155-run stand with Gill.

Rohit, who hit 131 in the first innings, missed a sweep off part-time spinner Joe Root and England successfully reviewed the decision after the on-field umpire denied the call.

Earlier Ben Duckett hit 153 and skipper Ben Stokes made 41 in his 100th Test but their innings came to a quick halt in the second session.

Siraj wiped out the tail with help from Ravindra Jadeja, who along with fellow spinner Kuldeep took two wickets each.

Left-hander Stokes attempted to hit back after Duckett’s departure but fell to Jadeja’s left-arm spin.

The tourists resumed on 207-2 in reply to India’s 445 but lost two wickets in the space of six deliveries inside the first 30 minutes.

Jasprit Bumrah struck in the fifth over of the day when Root attempted a reverse scoop and Jaiswal caught it at second slip.

Kuldeep got Jonny Bairstow trapped lbw for a duck.

The left-handed Duckett, who smashed 23 fours and two sixes in his 151-ball knock, got to 153 but came to a tame end when he chased a wide delivery from Kuldeep to be caught at cover.

The five-match series is level at 1-1 after England won the opener and India bounced back in the second match.

Ravichandran Ashwin to leave Rajkot Test midway

RAJKOT: India’s experienced spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn himself from the ongoing third Test against England, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Friday.

According to the BCCI, Ashwin opted to leave the ongoing Rajkot Test midway due to a “family emergency”.

“In these challenging times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully supports Ashwin,” stated BCCI in a press release.

“The BCCI extends its heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family. The health and well-being of the players and their loved ones are of utmost importance. The Board requests respect for the privacy of Ashwin and his family as they navigate through this challenging time.

“The Board and the team will continue to provide any necessary assistance to Ashwin and will keep the lines of communication open to offer support as needed. Team India appreciates the understanding and empathy of the fans and media during this sensitive period.”

Earlier today, Ravichandran Ashwin became the second-fastest bowler to take 500 wickets in Test cricket.

Ashwin began the Rajkot Test on 499 wickets and dismissed Zak Crawley (15) to claim his 500th wicket, becoming the ninth bowler to achieve this feat.

He took only 98 Tests to reach the landmark, which is the second-fastest, while Sri Lankan legend Muthiah Muralidaran is the fastest as he took only 87 Test matches.

He is only the second Indian bowler to reach the milestone after fellow spinner Anil Kumble (619).

Meanwhile, Ashwin also became the fifth spinner across the globe to join the elite 500-wicket club after Kumble, Muralidaran, Shane Warne and Nathan Lyon.

Ravichandran Ashwin, 37, has played 98 Tests since his debut in 2011 against West Indies in Delhi and bowled Darren Bravo to claim his first wicket.

In addition to his tally of 500 wickets, he has also scored 3,308 runs including five Test centuries in his 13-year long Test career.

Ben Duckett’s ton keeps England afloat in third India Test

RAJKOT: Opener Ben Duckett led England’s fightback with a brisk century and propelled the visitors to 207/2 in response to India’s 445 on Day 2 of the third Test of the five-match series here on Friday.

The left-handed opener amassed his third Test hundred in just 88 balls as England made 207-2 to cut their deficit by 238 runs after bowling out India for 445.

Duckett, unbeaten on 133 alongside Joe Root (nine) will now resume England’s strong reply on Day 3.

Ben Duckett came out all guns blazing and despite disciplined opening spells by the Indian pacers, smashed regular boundaries amid his 80-ball opening stand of 84 with Zak Crawley, who 15 off 28.

The solid opening stand was broken by Ravichandran Ashwin, who dismissed Crawley after Tea to complete 500 wickets in Test cricket, becoming only the second Indian to achieve the milestone after legendary spinner Anil Kumble (619).

Duckett then partnered with Olly Stone for a 93-run stand and brought up his century in the process by hitting a boundary off Mohammed Siraj, who got out the latter to break the 93-run stand.

“To be that far behind in the game and go out and play like that showed real bravery and skill,” England quick Mark Wood said of Duckett’s knock.

“The way India changed the field and then he’d hit it somewhere else, it was such a skilful innings against a good attack.”

“I’m delighted, the way him and Zak go out together and put pressure on the opposition,” said Wood, who took four wickets in India’s innings.

Earlier in the day, India resumed their first innings at an overnight score of 326/5 with Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav on strike.

The overnight pair of Jadeja and Kuldeep could add five runs to India’s tally before both perished in a span of six deliveries, bringing India down to 331/7.

However, important contributions from Dhruv Jurel (46), Ashwin (37) and Jasprit Bumrah (26) lifted them to a formidable total.

Express pacer Mark Wood remained the star with the ball for England, picking up four wickets, while Rehan Ahmed bagged two.

Tom Hartley, Joe Root and James Anderson struck out a batter apiece.

Ravichandran Ashwin becomes the second-fastest to take 500 Test wickets

RAJKOT: Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has become the second-fastest bowler to take 500 wickets in Test cricket during the first innings of the third Test against England here on Friday.

Ashwin began the Rajkot Test on 499 wickets and dismissed Zak Crawley (15) to claim his 500th wicket, becoming the ninth bowler to achieve this feat.

In addition to his tally of 500 wickets, he has also scored 3,308 runs including five Test centuries in his 13-year long Test career.

Before taking his 500th wicket, he was charged by the umpire for running in the middle of the pitch during India’s first innings. This resulted in a five-run penalty for the hosts.

Ashwin was reprimanded by on-field umpire Joel Wilson on the morning of day two in Rajkot and England started their innings with five for no loss as a result of the offence.

India get five-run penalty after Ashwin run in danger zone

RAJKOT: India were penalised five runs after the umpire charged batter Ravichandran Ashwin for running in the middle of the pitch in the third Test against England here on Friday.

Ashwin was reprimanded by on-field umpire Joel Wilson on the morning of day two in Rajkot and England will start their innings with five for no loss as a result of the offence.

Ashwin attempted to argue his case with Wilson, who then put his arm around the batsman’s shoulder and indicated five to signal the penalty.

According to the laws of cricket, “deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch” is an offence.

“It is unfair to cause deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch. If the striker enters the protected area in playing or playing at the ball, he/she must move from it immediately thereafter,” law 41.14 states.

“A batter will be deemed to be causing avoidable damage if either umpire considers that his/her presence on the pitch is without reasonable cause.”

Prior to Ashwin, fellow spinner Ravindra Jadeja was also warned for running on the pitch on the opening day.

England will now start their first innings with five runs on the board after being awarded the penalty runs in the 102nd over of India’s first innings.

Former England captain Alastair Cook called out Ashwin for deliberately run in the danger zone to gain an advantage during bowling in England’s innings.

“Is it deliberate? Yes, it is,” Cook said. “It’s a tactical ploy that you can disturb the middle of the wicket because Ashwin wants as much help [as possible] when he can bowl.”

Ravindra Jadeja reacts after mix-up with debutant Sarfaraz Khan

RAJKOT: Seasoned India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja broke silence on his mix-up with debutant Sarfaraz Khan on the opening day of the third Test against England.

Sarfaraz came out to bat at No.6 after skipper Rohit Sharma’s dismissal with Jadeja unbeaten on 84.

By the time cautious Jadeja reached 99, Sarfaraz had already notched up his maiden Test half-century, conceding just 48 deliveries.

He appeared eager to let his senior achieve the milestone and enthusiastically ran down the wicket when Jadeja timed one off James Anderson almost straight to Mark Wood at mid-on in the 81st over of the innings.

Jadeja took an early stride but then changed his mind while Wood picked up the ball and dislodged the stumps at the non-striker’s end with Sarfaraz well short of his crease.

The Southpaw wasted no time and took a single on the next delivery to bring up his fourth Test century. However, his celebration lacked the usual spark and energy, presumably due to the unfortunate run out of the youngster.

A mix-up leading to Sarfaraz Khan’s run-out left Indian skipper Rohit Sharma fuming in the dressing room and the visuals of him throwing his cap in distress quickly went viral on social media.

Ravindra Jadeja also found himself at the receiving end from cricketing fans, who termed the all-rounder “selfish”.

He later took to Instagram to express his disappointment over the incident and lauded the debutant for a courageous knock.

“Feeling bad for [Sarfaraz Khan] it was my wrong call. Well played,” wrote Jadeja on his Instagram story.

Despite an agonizing end, Sarfaraz managed to make his debut a memorable one as the right-handed batter left his supporters and fans impressed with a blazing 62. He only conceded 66 deliveries in the process and smashed 10 boundaries including a six.

Sarfaraz Khan says ‘father’s dream’ fulfilled after India debut

India’s Sarfaraz Khan on Thursday said his Test debut has been a dream fulfilled for his father after he impressed with an attacking 62 against England in the third match.

A prolific run-getter in Indian domestic cricket, Sarfaraz got his Test cap from former captain Anil Kumble with his teary-eyed father, Naushad Khan, and wife looking on in Rajkot.

Sarfaraz made the most with his 48-ball fifty to take the attack to the opposition bowlers and shine on a day of centuries by skipper Rohit Sharma (131) and Ravindra Jadeja (110 not out).

“I felt really happy,” Sarfaraz told reporters.

“Coming to the ground for the first time and got the cap in front of my father. I was six years old when he started my cricket,” the 26-year-old said.

“It was my dream to play for the Indian team in front of him. It was a dream to play for India during his lifetime.”

Sarfaraz, often criticised for being overweight, has been knocking on the selectors’ doors for more than three years while scoring in the domestic Ranji Trophy and has a first-class average of over 69 in 45 matches and a best of 301 not out.

Sarfaraz Khan came out to bat after Rohit’s departure and, following a nervous start, found his rhythm with boundaries to entertain the crowd.

He reached his 50 after a dominant show against the spinners and raised the bat to his family and the applauding dressing room.

“I was padded for almost four hours. I kept thinking that I have kept so much patience in life and there is no harm in keeping some more,” he said.

“After I went in, was nervous for first few balls but I have practised and worked so hard that everything went well.”

Sarfaraz burst into the limelight with a record 439 in school cricket in 2009 but his career later hit roadblocks and controversies.

Hailing from a small town in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Sarfaraz was once charged with age-fudging after failing a bone test report and was later booted out of a training camp due to indiscipline.

He played the Indian Premier League and was once selected by Royal Challengers Bangalore, but could never cement his place in the XI and was also advised by skipper Virat Kohli to lose weight.

But Sarfaraz, who plays domestic cricket for Mumbai, is happy to realise a dream his father had set out to achieve.

“It was my father’s dream to play for India but unfortunately it couldn’t happen due to some reasons and there wasn’t much support from home then,” Sarfaraz said.

“Then he worked very hard on me and is now doing on my brother. It was the proudest moment of my life.”

Sarfaraz Khan was finally run out after a mix-up with Jadeja, but his innings left the opposition camp impressed.

“I thought Ben (Stokes) wanted to keep attacking fields so we could create a chance. And fair play to him, he had the courage to go over the top on a few occasions,” England assistant coach Paul Collingwood said.

“He sweeps really well and put the bowlers under pressure. On debut, it takes a lot of courage to come out and play like that.”

Rohit, Jadeja tons put India in command against England

RAJKOT: Skipper Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja scored centuries and recovered India to 326/5 at Stumps on Day 1 of the ongoing third Test against England here on Thursday.

Opting to bat first, the hosts found themselves in deep trouble as their top-order batters Yashasvi Jaiswal (10), Shubman Gill (0) and Rajat Patidar (5) fell cheaply.

Their back-to-back dismissals had India reeling at 33/3 inside the first overs.

Following the slump, all-rounder Jadeja joined his captain Sharma in the middle and the duo launched an astounding recovery.

Jadeja and Sharma soaked the pressure exerted by the aggressive visitors and kept the scoreboard ticking.

They added a mammoth 204 runs in their exquisite partnership with Sharma bringing up his 11th century soon after the Tea break.

The marathon stand was the hosts’ first century-plus partnership and the highest so far by either India or England in the ongoing five-match series, currently squared at 1-1.

Rohit Sharma fell in the final session off Mark Wood, falling into the short-ball plan set up by England. He remained the top-scorer for India with 131 which featured 14 boundaries and three sixes.

Following Sharma’s dismissal came India’s emotional debutant Sarfaraz Khan.

The right-handed batter announced himself in style, smashing regular boundaries and pushing England onto the backfoot.

He put together a one-sided 77-run stand with Jadeja, scoring 80 per cent of the runs.

Sarfaraz had an agonizing end to his sensational knock as a mix-up, followed by a direct hit from Wood, resulted in him packing.

He smashed nine boundaries and a six on his way to a 66-ball 62.

Ravindra Jadeja brought up a well-crafted century in the dying minutes of Thursday’s action and celebrated by swinging the bat in his trademark sword dance.

He remained unbeaten on 110 alongside Kuldeep Yadav (1*) and will now resume India’s first innings on Day 2.

Mark Wood was the pick of the bowlers for England, picking up three wickets while Hartley made one scalp.
