Three uncapped players named in England squad for India Tests

LONDON: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday, announced a 16-man squad for the five-match away Test series against India, featuring three uncapped players Shoaib Bashir, Gus Atkinson and Tom Hartley.

Atkinson had a remarkable stint in the County Championship when he picked up 20 wickets in five matches at an average of 20.20, playing a pivotal role in Surrey claiming back-to-back titles.

Hartley and Bashir, on the other hand, were both part of the England Lions squad that trained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last month.

Shoaib Bashir, who made his professional debut in June after signing a professional contract with Somerset, has thus far played only six first-class matches and picked up 10 wickets at an average of 67.

Hartley too, has a modest first-class record for Lancashire, with 40 career wickets at 36.57.

Meanwhile, England Test captain Ben Stokes, who recently underwent knee surgery last month, is also included in the squad.

However, it remains uncertain whether the dynamic all-rounder would be fit enough to bowl in the series.

Ben Foakes, who was dropped for the Ashes, has been recalled for the India Tests, while Jack Leach and Ollie Pope both return to the squad after recovering from back and shoulder injuries during the English summer.

England’s 16-man squad for the India Tests features four spinners and as many pacers.

England Test squad: Rehan Ahmed, James Anderson, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ben Foakes, Tom Hartley, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Ben Stokes (captain), Mark Wood.

India defend 230 against England to stay perfect in World Cup 2023

LUCKNOW: Mohammed Shami-led bowling attack dismantled England’s batting lineup to power India to a thumping 100-run victory in the 29th match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase a modest 230-run total, England batters failed against a dominant Indian bowling attack and could score 129 runs in response before bundling out in the 35th over.

Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow gave England a decent start by scoring 30 runs for the first wicket before Jasprit Bumrah struck twice, removing Malan (14) and Joe Root (0), on successive deliveries to put India in control.

Mohammed Shami then further dented England’s pursuit with two quick strikes, getting rid of Bairstow (14) and Stokes (0).

Kuldeep Yadav added further to the misery of England as he castled Jos Buttler with a sensational delivery, causing the defending champions to slip to 52/5 in the 16th over.

All-rounders Moeen Ali (15)  and Liam Livingstone then attempted to anchor the run chase. The duo batted cautiously amid their 29-run stand before Shami struck again to deny England a recovery.

Livingstone was then joined by Chris Woakes and the pair could knit a meagre 17-run partnership before both fell in back-to-back overs.

Livingstone remained the top-scorer for England with a 46-ball 27, hitting two boundaries.

Tailenders David Willey and Adil Rashid (13) shared a 24-run partnership to get England past the 120-run mark but could not continue for long as the Indian pacers returned to wrap up the innings.

Willey remained unbeaten with a 17-ball 16 with the help of two sixes.

Mohammed Shami led the bowling attack for India with 4/22, followed by Bumrah’s 3/32 while Kuldeep Yadav bagged two wickets.

England bowlers started off brilliantly after winning the toss and reduced India to 40-3 in the 12th over.

KL Rahul then joined hands with Rohit Sharma to help stabilize the Indian innings with a 91-run stand for the fourth wicket.

David Willey then removed KL Rahul (39) to break the stand to leave India reeling at 131-4.

Rohit Sharma played a cautious knock of 87 off 101 with the help of 10 boundaries and three sixes before a brilliant catch by Liam Livingstone off Adil Rashid sent him back.

Suryakumar Yadav then scored an anchoring 49 off 47, while Jaspirt Bumrah played a 16-run cameo to drag India’s total to 229-9 in their accumulative 50 overs.

David Willey led the bowling charts for England with figures of 3-45, while Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid picked two wickets each.

Hardik Pandya ruled out of ICC World Cup 2023 clash against England

Indian allrounder Hardik Pandya will remain out of the team for their upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 match against England on October 29 in Lucknow, owing to his ongoing recovery from the ankle injury.

Hardik Pandya twisted his ankle last Thursday just three balls into his stint as the first change in the ninth over during the match against Bangladesh.

Following prolonged on-field treatment, he tried running in to bowl but could only hobble towards the crease and eventually limped off the field.

India won the match by seven wickets, with Pandya playing no part in the match after suffering the aforementioned injury.

Subsequently, he missed the next match against New Zealand and was replaced by Suryakumar Yadav, who could only score two runs before being run out.

India went on to win the match by four wickets, courtesy of Virat Kohli’s gutsy 95-run, which propelled India to the top of the ICC World Cup 2023 standings with five wins out of five games.

Set to chase 274, India completed the pursuit for the loss of six wickets and 12 balls remaining to stay unbeaten in the mega event.

Notably, this was India’s first victory over New Zealand after 20 years in an ICC tournament.

Virat Kohli becomes first batter to amass 4000-run landmark in T20Is

ADELAIDE: India’s veteran batter Virat Kohli added another feather to his cap as he became the first batter to score 4,000 runs in T20 Internationals, here on Thursday.

The star Indian batter achieved the milestone amid his steady knock in the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 against England.

Kohli needed 42 runs to complete 4,000 runs before heading into the all-important game. Meanwhile, his half-century – 37th overall and fourth of the mega event – powered him to script himself into the record books.

It is pertinent to mention that Kohli scored 50 off 40 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and a six. Following his steady knock, all-rounder Hardik Pandya muscled India to a commendable total of 168/8 with a blistering 63-run knock.

Kohli is currently the leading run-scorer in T20Is and also became the highest run-getter in Men’s T20 World Cup history earlier this month.

T20 WC: Rohit gets hit on forearm during net session ahead of semi-final

ADELAIDE: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma survived a serious injury as he got a hit on the forearm while practising in the nets on Tuesday ahead of the T20 World Cup semi-final against England.

According to the Indian media reports, Rohit took some rest and applied an icepack before resuming his training again but mostly played defensive shots to make sure that his movements were alright.

The Indian captain was undergoing usual practice drills when he faced a powerful blow on his forearm while attempting a pull shot against the dog thrower. Rohit looked in pain and received immediate medical treatment.

Team sources said the captain is doing fine and should play the semifinal against England on Thursday, reported Indian media.

It is pertinent to mention here that India topped the Group 2 standings in the Super 12s stage with four wins and a lone defeat against South Africa. The Men in Blue will now take on England at Adelaide Oval on Thursday in the second semifinal of the mega event.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will face New Zealand in the first semi-final tomorrow at Sydney Cricket Ground.

India captain defends controversial run-out to seal England sweep

LONDON: India captain Harmanpreet Kaur insisted her side had committed no “crime” after sealing victory over England at Lord’s on Saturday with a run-out at the non-striker’s end.

England were eyeing a remarkable win in the third women’s one-day international when India bowler Deepti Sharma ran out non-striker Charlie Dean, who was well out of her ground.

Dean’s 47, batting at number nine, had given England, who were 53-6, hope of chasing down a target of 170. Instead they were bowled out for 153 as India won by 16 runs to complete a 3-0 series sweep.

An emotional Dean broke down in tears when her dismissal was confirmed before sportingly shaking hands with her opponents.

Despite being allowed under cricket’s rules, running out a non-striker backing up has long been regarded as unsporting by many within the game.

But it was only this week the International Cricket Council reiterated the dismissal, known as a “Mankad” after India’s Vinoo Mankad, who ran out Australia batsman Bill Brown backing up in a 1948 Test in Sydney, was completely legitimate.

This was both teams’ first match at Lord’s since England beat India in the 2017 Women’s World Cup final.

And while some boos were heard following Dean’s dismissal, Kaur was adamant Sharma had done nothing to overshadow either the victory or India pace great Jhulan Goswami’s last match before international retirement.

“Today whatever we have done I don’t think it was any crime, it is part of the game and it is an ICC rule and I think we just need to back our player,” Kaur said.

“I don’t think (Sharma) has done something wrong and we just need to back her.”

England seamer Kate Cross said she would never take a wicket in this way but added: “I think it’s a dismissal that’s always going to divide opinion. That’s all that’s ever going to get said about it: some people are going to like it, some people aren’t.

“Deepti chose to dismiss Charlie Dean that way. I’m more disappointed for Charlie Dean that she couldn’t get a fifty at Lord’s today because she looked set to do that.

“If we’re looking at the real positives, then maybe that’s the only way they could have got Deano out today.”

‘History tells you that India struggle against left-arm pacers’ Nasser

LONDON: Former England captain and renowned commentator Nasser Hussain heaped praises on Pakistan left-arm speedsters Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Amir while claiming that India have a history of struggling against left-arm pacers.

Hussain, in a press conference, post India’s historic ODI series victory over England in their backyard after 2014-15, heaped praises on the bench strength of the Men in Blue.

The former England captain also advised the touring side to play courageously and suggested their batters become familiar with left-arm bowlers.

“India are a very strong team, but they need to learn from what happened in the past. In the last T20 World Cup in the UAE they were a bit timid with the bat, so they need to stop being that,” Hussain said.

“When you have Pandya and Pant in the middle order and then Jadeja that rope to follow, you don’t need to be timid at the top,” he stressed.

Hussain then went on to mention a few occasions when left-arm pacers wreaked havoc over the Indian batting line-up and gave reference to the Pakistan-India clash at the previous year’s ICC T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

“They need to play to left arm [pace bowling] a little bit better. History tells you that Shaheen Shah Afridi blew them away one evening in Dubai, Mohammad Amir blew them away one afternoon at the Oval in a final, and Reece Topley has blown them away here [at Old Trafford],” he stated.

“They need to be a bit more tensed to their batting, so some of their seamers will come down in a T20, in the last two overs with 20 to win. One of those seamers will need them to get across the line,” he added.

Topley’s six-for aids England stun India in second ODI to keep series alive

LONDON: Reece Topley stormed through the Indian batting line with a six-wicket haul to help England beat India by 100 runs in the second One-Day International, here at Lord’s on Thursday.

Fast bowler Topley shone with his career-best figures of 6/24 as India were bowled out on 146 while chasing a 248-run target posted by England.

India displayed a mediocre batting show as England’s pace attack effectively dismantled their top order forcing India to distress on 31/4 within the 12 overs.

Topley led the charge for England getting rid of the opening pair early. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma went back without scoring while his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan fell cheaply on 9.

Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant fell prey to Brydon Carse on a duck while Virat Kohli’s rough patch with the bat continued to haunt the star batter as he ended up getting an outside edge on David Willey’s bowl.

After the initial collapse, India’s middle order put up a slight resistance with Suryakuymar Kumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami building a few unstable partnerships to push the scoreboard to 140/6.

The Blue shirts underwent another collapse in the lower order losing the last four wickets by adding just 6 runs to the total.

For England, apart from sensational bowling figures produced by Topley, Willey, Carse, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone bagged a wicket each.

Earlier, the hosts reached a competitive total of 246 with help of astounding knocks by Moeen Ali, Willey, Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow after being put to bat by the Indian skipper.

Moeen remained the top scorer of the match with his cautious knock of 47 off 64 balls, including two boundaries and two sixes.

Meanwhile, Willey and Livingstone scored glittering 41 and 33, respectively, after Bairstow smashed 38 at run a ball in the top order.

England have now levelled the three-match ODI series 1-1 after the victory with the final encounter to be held on Sunday at Manchester.
