Virat Kohli ruled out of first ODI against England

LONDON: Former captain Virat Kohli has been ruled out of India’s Playing XI for the first ODI against England due to a groin injury.

Virat, who is going through a rough patch in international cricket and could only manage to score a mere 12 runs in two T20Is in the recently-concluded series, has now ruled out of India’s Playing XI for the first ODI.

Following Kohli’s unavailability, right-handed batter Shreyar Iyer replaced Kohli as India’s No.3 in the first fixture of the three-match series.

According to the details, the veteran batter also did not join the touring side on their way to Nottingham to here due to a medical stopover by the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) medical panel.

The extent of his injury is still not known, however, reports suggest that the 33-year-old will be available for selection in the next fixture at Lord’s on July 14.

Jadeja, bowlers shine as India blunt England to claim series victory

BIRMINGHAM: Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja scored an unbeaten 46 before the bowlers wreaked havoc over the England batting line-up to power the touring side to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.

Indian bowlers dominated the hosts’ batting line-up, bowling them out for 121, resulting in a comprehensive 49-run victory in the second T20I.

Following England captain Jos Buttler’s invitation to bat first, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant provided a solid start for the touring side, charging the hosts’ bowlers with a dominant approach in the powerplay.

The openers, however, could not keep going for long as England’s debutant Richard Gleeson claimed his maiden international wicket by removing Rohit for 31. He faced 20 deliveries and smashed three boundaries and two sixes in the course of his blistering knock.

The rest of the Indian batters then could not capitalize on the solid foundation as they kept walking back to the pavilion after making small contributions.

Gleeson continued to shine on his debut as he removed former top-ranked batter Virat Kohli (1) and another opener Pant to increase his tally to three. Pant scored a quickfire 26 off 15 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and a six.

England right-arm veteran pacer Chris Jordan then wreaked havoc over the Indian middle-order and began to claim wickets at an astonishing rate and soon caused India to slip to 89/5 in the 11th over.

Following another brief collapse, Indian all-rounder Jadeja stood up for his team and played a gritty unbeaten knock of 46 and bolstered the touring side to a commendable total of 170/8 with his late power-hitting, while the tailenders were making their way back with paltry contributions. He faced just 29 deliveries and smashed five boundaries.

For England, debutant Gleeson impressed with three wickets, while Jordan bagged four for 27 in his four overs.

Set to chase 171, the English batting line-up failed completely and could only manage to score 121 before being bowled out in 17 overs.

All-rounder Moeen Ali and David Willey, resisted a bit against the firing Indian bowling with their gritty knocks, while the rest of the batters seemed clueless.

Moeen top-scored for the side with a quickfire 35 off 21 balls, laced with three boundaries and two sixes, while Willey remained unbeaten with 33 off 22 deliveries with the same tally of boundaries.

For India, Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the way with three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal bagged two each. Harshal Patel and Hardik Pandya, on the other hand, struck out a batter each.

Earlier, Edgbaston authorities decided to launch an investigation after several tweets came into the limelight by Indian fans in attendance on the fourth day of the rescheduled Test for experiencing racist abuse at the stands and also complained about the stewards, who fell on deaf ears.

‘Stokes wanted to promote me to hit winning runs against India’ Anderson

LONDON: England veteran right-arm pacer James Anderson revealed the incident from the hosts’ dressing room amid Edgbaston Test against India and claimed the skipper Ben Stokes asked him to score the winning runs for the team.

With England approaching the record target on the final day of the rescheduled Test, Anderson revealed that discussions were taking place about who would bat next, with Stokes – usually England’s No.6 – suggesting that others in the dressing room take the chance of hitting the winning runs.

“Because there was a new ball coming up, they thought, ‘Let’s try and finish it before the new ball. So if we lose a wicket, we’ll send Broady in and he can literally just try and hit every ball for six’. Between 67 and 75 overs or something like that. So then the deeper we got – I think it was about 20 runs left – Broady was like, ‘Right, that’s me done, someone else can go in next’,” Anderson revealed.

“So then Stokesy comes up to me and said, ‘You’ve never hit the winning runs. So if we need four to win, and [Ravindra] Jadeja’s bowling for example, do you fancy going in and hitting the winning runs?’ I just felt really uncomfortable with it. I thought it was a little bit too piss-takey. So I was like, ‘I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that’,” he further claimed.

The veteran pacer then went on to reveal that following this incident no one in the dressing room had padded up to go in and finish the job at No.6 as Sam Billings was the latest batter to have turned down Stokes’s idea of taking the chance to score the winning runs.

“So then he goes to Sam Billings who was batting at seven. ‘It’s a great chance to hit the winning runs in a Test match’. And again, he was like, ‘No, no, no, you’re next, you’re the captain you should go’. So we ended up, 20 runs left, Stuart Broad had decided he wasn’t going in, so he took his pads off,” Anderson disclosed.

“Sam Billings didn’t have his pads on. I wouldn’t put my pads on. And Ben Stokes also didn’t put his pads on. So we had no one padded up for the last 20 runs of that game. That’s how relaxed everyone was,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that England, in the end, did not need a No.6 as they defeated India by seven wickets on the back of an astounding unbeaten partnership between Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow.

Pandya stuns England as India bounce back in first white-ball encounter

SOUTHAMPTON: Hardik Pandya soothed India after a crushing red-ball defeat, with his sensational all-round performance as the touring side beat England by 50 runs in the first T20I, here on Thursday.

All-rounder Pandya smashed a blistering half-century off 30 balls coupled with pivotal knocks played by Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar Yadav, enabling their side to reach a massive total of 198 in the first innings.

However, England’s chase fell short of expectations as six of their batters failed to get into double figures while Pandya maintained his sublime form and claimed four wickets to knock the hosts out on 148.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma tried to compensate for his absence in the Edgbaston Test after testing Covid positive as he blasted quick 24 runs off 14 balls, hitting four boundaries before he was caught behind the stumps on Moeen Ali’s delivery in the third over.

Hooda and Yadav carried the momentum forward for the Blue Shirts as both the batters moved the scoreboard at an accelerating pace. Hooda scored 33 off 17 balls laced with three fours and two sixes while Yadav made 39 off 19 including four boundaries and three sixes.

Meanwhile, Pandya combined excellently with Yadav and Axar Patel to upset England’s bowling attack as he pushed the ball for six boundaries and a huge six during his scintillating knock of 51 off 33 balls.

On the other side, England’s skipper Jos Butler went back on a duck after being bowled out by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the first over, forcing the hosts to get off to a poor start.

Pandya wreaked havoc on England in the fifth over dismissing stong-looking Dawid Malan on 21 followed by a cheap dismissal of Liam Livingstone on a duck in the same over. Jason Roy also fell cheaply on four by Pandy in the 7th over.

England were shattered by the tourists on 33/4 before rookie Harry Brook and left-hander Moeen Ali built a strong partnership of 61 runs. The side underwent another collapse in the 13th over as spinner Yuzendra Chahal removed the pair in the same over.

The rest of England’s batting line lacked vigor as it began to lose wickets at regular intervals and the side was eventually bowled out for 148 in the 20th over.

For India, Pandya starred with the bowl while Chahal and Arshdeep Singh grabbed two wickets each. Bhuvneshwar and Harshal Patel made one scalp apiece.

With the early win, India now have a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against England with the second match scheduled on July 9 at Birmingham.

India slip below Pakistan in WTC points table after slow-over penalty

DUBAI: India have been slipped below Pakistan in the World Test Championship standings after being docked two points by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for slow over-rate in the rescheduled fifth Test against England.

India, which lost the final Test in a frustrating manner despite setting a commendable 378-run target, have found themselves in another unpleasant situation as the touring side have been slipped to the fourth position in the latest WTC standings following the penalization of two points.

Following India’s slump, Pakistan have acquired the third spot in the standings edging past the former by a thin margin. After the penalty, India have 75 points (point percentage of 52.08) just below Pakistan (52.38%).

The ICC has further announced to fine the touring players with 40 percent of their match fees for the offence.

According to Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalized one point for each over short. Resultantly, England lost two points from their total tally.

Meanwhile, Pakistan have an opportunity to further strengthen their hold on the third spot as the Green Shirts are due to tour Sri Lanka to contest in a two-match Test series, later this month.

Edgbaston to investigate racism allegations by Indian fans during final Test

BIRMINGHAM: Edgbaston decided to launch an investigation following the allegations raised by the Indian fans regarding the racist abuse on the fourth day of the recently-concluded final Test.

Several tweets came to the limelight by fans in attendance on the fourth day of the rescheduled Test for experiencing racist abuse at the stands and also complained about the stewards, who fell on deaf ears.

The official Bharat Army Twitter account confirmed the racism allegations raised by several cricket fans and claimed to work with Edgbaston to share the feedback.

“Sad to say many of our members experienced racist abuse from a very small minority of individuals. We will work with Edgbaston to share all your feedback. Thank you to those England fans who stood by us,” The Bharat Army tweeted.

Following that, the England and Wales Cricket Board’s official Twitter account also expressed disappointment over the accusations and promised to cooperate with Edgbaston to begin the investigation.

“We are very concerned to hear reports of racist abuse at today’s Test match. We are in contact with colleagues at Edgbaston who will investigate. There is no place for racism in cricket,” the cricket board tweeted.

Meanwhile, Edgbaston chief executive Stuart Cain, in a statement, claimed that he was ‘gutted’ by the racism allegations.

“I’m gutted by these reports as we’re working hard to make Edgbaston a safe, welcoming environment for all,” Cain stated.

“Having seen the initial tweets, I’ve spoken personally to the gentleman who raised them and we’re now speaking to the stewards in this area to establish what happened. Nobody should be subject to any form of abuse at Edgbaston. So, once we’ve got all the facts, we will make sure this issue is addressed swiftly,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that the ECB has already started the investigation after the former Yorkshire CCC player Azim Rafiq made racism allegations and claimed to have experienced ‘inhuman behaviour’, whereas, an independent panel of the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) will hear the cases in due course and as per the normal practice of the ECB.

Resuming their run chase at 259/3, Bairstow and Root carried the momentum of their overnight partnership and displayed no signs of rusting.

Root and Bairstow, who were unbeaten on 76 and 72 respectively, soon amassed their centuries as they seemed unmoved by the Indian bowling attack.
