New Zealand holds on for a hard-fought draw as Rachin and Ajaz star

KANPUR: New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra played a determined innings against India in the closing session of day five to help his team avoid defeat in the first test here on Monday.

With a 284-run target in mind, the Kiwi batters resumed their innings on the final day of the test with an overnight score of 4/1. Tom Latham (2*) and William Somerville (0*) gave the side a solid start, adding 76 runs to the team total before Somerville was dismissed by Umesh Yadav on 36. Kane Williamson walked out to bat and began to neutralize the situation; he played a gritty innings and began to build a partnership with Latham. But, just as things were looking up for the Black Caps, they lost their opener, Latham, for 52 runs after being bowled out by Ravichandran Ashwin with 118 runs on the board.

Williamson appeared to be in great shape at one end, but wickets were falling at an alarming rate at the other. Williamson, too, fell short and was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja on 24 (112). As a result, the team’s seven wickets were lost for only 37 runs, and the scoreboard read 155/9. Rachin and Ajaz, on the other hand, delivered gritty knocks to keep their team from losing in the first. Rachin faced 91 balls and scored 18 runs without being out. Ajaz, on the other hand, scored 2 off 23.

The Indian bowlers did a pretty good job of triggering a collapse in the New Zealand batting order, but they were unable to take the final wicket. Jadeja was their standout bowler in the second innings, taking four wickets, including the crucial wicket of Williamson. Ashwin, on the other hand, was equally impressive, taking three wickets for 35 runs. Yadav and Axar Patel both took a wicket.

India’s Shreyas Iyer, however, was declared player of the match for his magnificent 105 runs in the first and 65 in the second.

The second and final test between India and New Zealand will be started from 3rd December at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The Blue Caps could not start their day to the fullest as both the batters were sent back to the pavilion after adding a few runs into their previous score. Saha remained unbeaten on 61 as India declared their innings on 234/7 and set 284-runs target for Black Caps.

Axar takes five-fer as India take the lead against New Zealand

KANPUR: Indian spinners Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin destroyed New Zealand’s batting line-up to dismiss them for 296.

India took the lead of 63 runs against New Zealand at the stumps on day 3. The Blue Caps started their innings with the 49-runs lead and scored 14/1 at the end of the day. Kylie Jamieson provided an early breakthrough to his side as he dismissed Shubman gill for just 5. Mayank Agarwal (4*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (9*) will resume the proceedings for India on day 4.

Resuming at the overnight score of 129/0, Black Caps’ set opening pair Tom Latham and Will Young stretched their opening stand to 151 before Ravichandran Ashwin got Young for 89. Latham was looking firm at one end but the Kiwis lost their second wicket as their skipper Kane Williamson departed without scoring much as the batter only scored 18 and was trapped in legs by Umesh Yadav.

Indian bowlers started to shift the pressure on to the Kiwis and they started to play a little too much defensive yet began to lose wickets in a constant fashion. New Zealand lost their last nine wickets for just 99 runs.

Latham was their top-scorer as he missed out on his century by just five runs and was dismissed by Axar for 95 runs.

Axar was the stand-out performer for India as the spinner bagged five-wickets haul and initiated the collapse. Ashwin on the other was also very clinical as he dismissed three batters. Ravindra Jadeja and Yadav took one wicket each.

India beat New Zealand to give new T20 skipper Rohit winning start

JAIPUR: India gave Rohit Sharma a winning start as captain by securing a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20 international despite a late wobble in Jaipur on Wednesday.

The hosts were cruising towards a target of 165 as Rohit struck a quickfire 48 and Suryakumar Yadav made 62.

India, from needing 23 from the final four overs with eight wickets in hand, stuttered badly to leave them still requiring 10 off the last over, bowled by part-time seamer Daryl Mitchell.

But Rishabh Pant struck the winning boundary over mid-off with two balls to spare to put India 1-0 ahead in the three-match series.

It was an encouraging start to life as skipper for Rohit, who took over from Virat Kohli in the shortest format following India’s shock Super 12 exit at the T20 World Cup.

“Towards the end we saw it wasn’t easy. Was a great learning for the guys because those guys haven’t batted in that situation before for India,” said Rohit.

New Zealand, without usual captain Kane Williamson, were playing just three days after their World Cup final loss to Australia in Dubai.

India made a bright start to their chase before opener KL Rahul was caught off Mitchell Santner for just 15.

But the home side, with new coach Rahul Dravid in the dugout for the first time, took total control through Yadav and Rohit.

Yadav, who was given the man-of-the-match award, struck six fours and three sixes in his 40-ball innings before he was clean bowled by Trent Boult, who earlier removed Rohit, in the 16th over.

New Zealand dragged themselves back into the contest in the closing overs, but stand-in skipper Tim Southee turned to Mitchell instead of leg-spinner Todd Astle in the 20th over and Pant got India over the line.

“We played our best cricket and took it deep,” Southee said.

– Guptill, Chapman impress –

Earlier, half-centuries by Martin Guptill and Mark Chapman propelled the visitors to 164 for six.

The Kiwis lost Mitchell for a duck, bowled in the first over by seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Guptill and Chapman then put together a 109-run second-wicket partnership, hammering the Indian bowling attack at will.

Chapman scored 63 in 50 balls but fell to Ravichandran Ashwin as he tried to hit the off-spinner over the leg-side boundary. Ashwin also dismissed Glenn Phillips, lbw, in the same over for nought.

But Guptill continued with his lively innings, smashing four sixes and three fours in his 70 off 42 balls before being caught at deep mid-wicket. Wicketkeeper Tim Seifert tried to accelerate but was caught off Kumar for 12.

Kumar finished with figures of 2-24 while Chahar and Mohammed Siraj took one wicket each.

The teams will meet in the second T20I on Friday in Ranchi.

‘Ban IPL’ trends in India after back-to-back defeats in T20 WC

KARACHI: Indians in huge numbers demanded a ban on the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they believe it destroyed their team.

‘Ban on IPL’ became a social media trend after India lost back-to-back matches against Pakistan and New Zealand in T20 World Cup 2021. Pakistan beat India by 10 wickets followed by New Zealand defeating them by eight wickets on Sunday.

With two defeats in a row, India is fifth in Group 2 of the mega event and their position in the tournament now highly depends on ifs and buts.

India set world record of scoring no boundary in 10 overs

DUBAI: India have now become the only T20I team that failed to hit a boundary in between 10 overs in the shorter format of the game.

In their T20 World Cup contest against New Zealand on Sunday, the Indian batting line failed completely. No boundary was scored by Indian batsmen between over 7-17.

It was the first time such a thing happened in T20I history. India set this record amid their poor form started in the T20 World Cup after losing to arch-rivals Pakistan by 10 wickets in their first match.

With another defeat in the mega event, India are fifth in Group 2 with no win so far. They will now face Afghanistan in their third match on November 3.

New Zealand beat India to win their first match in T20 WC

DUBAI: Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson partnered strongly to drive New Zealand to eight-wickets win against India in T20 World Cup here at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
