Pant’s century rescues India after early collapse on the opening day

BIRMINGHAM: India’s wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant bailed off the touring side from the horror with a magnificent knock of 146 runs after the English pacemen tested the top order on the opening day of the rescheduled fifth Test.

With the touring side struggling at 98/5, Pant and Ravindra Jadeja came to the rescue and put on an astounding 222-run partnership to see off the trouble.

At the toss of the rescheduled fifth Test between the two sides, England’s newly-appointed captain Ben Stokes put the touring side into bat first after the coin flipped in his favour.

Batting first, India were off to a dismal start as the veteran pacer James Anderson removed both their openers Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara cheaply for a combined score of 46. Gill scored 17, while Pujara could only add 13 to his name.

Following the early horror, Hanuma Vihari and the former Indian captain Virat Kohli looked to anchor the innings and batted sensibly in a bid to ease the pressure.

However, Matthew Potts’s successive strikes trumped their effort; removing both the batters in a span of exactly two overs and causing India to slip to 71/4. The right-arm pacer trapped Vihari in his legs for 20 before casting the former top-ranked batter Kohli for 11.

Anderson then struck his third to add to the touring side’s misery as he removed Shreyas Iyer for a mere 15, courtesy of an astonishing catch behind the wicket by Sam Billings.

Pant and Jadeja then stood up for their side and batted sensibly to avoid the horror as they batted for around 39 overs and added 222 runs at a rapid pace.

The pair appeared unmoved with Pant amassing his fifth Test century on just 89 deliveries and Jadeja bringing up his outstanding half-century.

However, the England captain’s unusual tactics worked for him as the part-timer Joe Root struck gold for his side in just his third over; removing the dangerous Pant, who fell just four short of his 150. In his terrific knock of 144, the left-hander faced just 111 deliveries and smashed 23 boundaries including four sixes.

Following Pant’s exit, Stokes wasted no time to draw another success for his side as he removed the tailender, Shardul Thakur, for one in the next over.

The pair of Jadeja and Mohammed Shami then batted for the remaining five overs and added a crucial 15 runs to the team’s total before the rain-hit opening day concluded with India stable at 338/7.

Jadeja, who is just 17 short of his third Test hundred and Shami (0*) will now resume the proceedings for the touring side on the second day.

For England, Anderson shone again with three wickets, while Potts bagged two. Skipper Stokes, on the other hand, made one scalp.

Anderson returns as England announce Playing XI for home India Test

LONDON: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the Playing XI for their home fifth and final Test against India, veteran pacer James Anderson returned after recovering from an injury.

The hosts England have revealed their lineup for the fifth and final Test of England’s previously scheduled series, which was postponed due to concerns about the Covid-19.

England’s veteran pacer, who missed the final Test against New Zealand of the recently-concluded series due to an ankle injury, has recovered and has been added to the Playing XI for India Test. Whereas, his replacement Jamie Overton remained unable to make it to the side.

It is pertinent to mention here that India are yet to reveal their captain for the Test as Rohit Sharma is doubtful after contracting the widely spread virus, while the deputy KL Rahul was ruled out of the entire tour as he will be travelling to Germany for the treatment.

Anderson ruled out from third Test against New Zealand, Overton to debut

LEEDS: Right-arm seamer from Surrey, Jamie Overton will make his Test debut in the third and final Test against New Zealand as the veteran pacer James Anderson has been ruled out with an ankle injury, England’s Test captain Ben Stokes announced on Wednesday.

Overton, who received a maiden call-up to the Test squad following his incredible run in the ongoing County Championship, will be replacing the injured Anderson to make his Test debut tomorrow.

“Unfortunately Jimmy’s not pulled up as well as we would have liked him too, so Jamie Overton’s going to make his debut this week,” Stokes told Sky Sports.

“It’s unfortunate for Jimmy, but we’ve got a massive test against India coming up as well. I’m not too sure how serious it is, to be honest. He’s just got a bit of a puffy ankle,” he added.

With Overton making his debut in the third Test means his brother Craig Overton will miss out to make it into the Playing XI.

“That’s the only change this week. As tempting as it was to get both twins out there playing for England, Jamie’s the only change,” Stokes announced.

It is pertinent to mention here that England have an unassailable 2-0 lead against the world Test champions, following five-wicket wins at Lord’s and Trent Bridge.

James Anderson presents Hasan Ali with a Lancashire County Cap

MANCHESTER: England’s legendary pacer James Anderson presented his Pakistani counterpart Hasan Ali with a Lancashire County Cap, ahead of their Division 1 fixture of the ongoing County Championship, here on Friday.

Hasan’s county team Lancashire County Cricket Club bid farewell to the right-arm pacer as the Pakistani speedster may leave the squad and travel back to Pakistan if he gets selected in the ODI squad of the upcoming home series against West Indies, scheduled next month.

Hasan, who is currently the leading wicket-taker, has been rewarded for his outstanding performance when the veteran pacer praised him on behalf of the players and the club and also presented him with the county cap.

“On behalf of the players, Hasan. I just want to say thank you for your efforts. As Chilly said, you’ve not been here for long, but you’ve had a huge impact and put [on] some match-winning performances,” Anderson said ahead of presenting the cap to Hasan.

“I know this is your last week, so let’s go out on a high, send you off with a win, some more wickets, hopefully,” Anderson added.

Anderson again thanked Hasan, on behalf of their team while also expressing his hope to have the Pakistani speedster in the team again.

“But I really hope again, on behalf of the players and the club, I hope this isn’t the last we see of you, we’d love to have you back in the future,” Anderson concluded.

It is apropos to mention here that Hasan is likely to travel back after his side Lancashire’s ongoing fixture against Essex as he may get a national call up to represent Pakistan against West Indies in the home ODI series.

Anderson, Broad return as England name squad for New Zealand Tests

LONDON: Veteran English fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad returned to the side as England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) named a strong 13-members squad for the first two Tests of the summer season against New Zealand.

England, which will be on their first assignment with the new captain Ben Stokes and the head coach Brendon McCullum have recalled their experienced pacers Anderson and Broad. Whereas, Yorkshire batter Harry Brook and Durham seamer Matthew Potts are called up for the first time.

Brook and Potts are the leading English batter and bowler respectively in the ongoing County Championship 2022. The right-handed batter Brook has so far scored 758 runs at an average of 151.60, including three centuries and four half-centuries.

Potts, on the other hand, has also been impressive as the right-arm pacer is the season’s leading bowler with 35 wickets and four five-wicket hauls.

Rob Key, the Managing Director of the England Cricket termed the ongoing period as the ‘New Era’ for England and claimed to have named a strong squad with a blend of experience and youth.

“This is the start of a new era for our Test team under the stewardship of Ben [Stokes] and Brendon [McCullum]. With a blend of youth and experience, we have selected an exciting squad that can compete with New Zealand in next month’s Test series,” Key said.

“We have rewarded players in Harry Brook and Matty Potts who have had outstanding starts to the County season, and they deserve the opportunity to stake a claim at this level.

“It promises to be a mouthwatering series, and I can’t wait for the team to start against a very good New Zealand side. It is a fascinating prospect for everyone connected with the sport in this country,” he concluded.

The three-match Test series is a part of the ICC World Test Championship. The England team will be looking to climb the rankings after a disappointing start to the second edition of the Championship. The side currently holds the ninth position following their series defeats against Australia and West Indies.

‘I’m going to disturb him’ Hasan on sharing dressing room with Anderson

LANCASHIRE: Pakistan’s right-arm pacer Hasan Ali, who is set to represent Lancashire in the ongoing County Cricket Championship 2022, said that he will disturb the veteran fast-bowler, James Anderson.

Hasan, who is set to play six matches for Lancashire during his stint as an overseas player for the side, said he is excited to share the dressing room with Anderson.

“I’m very excited and looking forward to sharing the dressing room with their players; obviously we have Jimmy bhai, Jimmy Anderson, so I’m very happy and very excited,” Hasan told ESPNcricinfo.

The Pakistani speedster further revealed that he never interacted with Anderson before but now he will and he will disturb him a lot to learn some new things.

“Honestly, I never spoke with him before. But now I’m going to have a lot of questions to ask him. I’m going to disturb him,” he said.

“We know he’s a great bowler. He swings the ball both ways. I’m going to learn how he swings the ball both ways, especially the cross-seam ball. I’m going to learn it,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that Anderson is currently the third-highest wicket-taker in Test history. The right-arm pacer has also been representing Lancashire since 2002.

‘Followed Asif to learn bowling wobble seam’ Anderson

KARACHI: England’s pacer James Anderson revealed that he learned bowling wobble seam delivery after watching Mohammad Asif of Pakistan in 2010.

Speaking to 7 Cricket, Anderson responded to a query about his command on wobble seam delivery.

“It was before the 2010/11 Ashes, David Saker was our bowling coach. He said Kookaburra doesn’t swing for the huge amount of time, so something else in the locker as a bowler was crucial here in Australia for success,” Anderson shared.

“In summer 2010, we played against Pakistan and Mohammad Asif was bowling this ball which just wobbled a little bit, it was not seaming nor swinging, he was just trying to nip off the seam,

“So I spent the whole summer practising that and working on it and was comfortable to bowl here [in Australia] which actually brought success for me throughout that series,” he revealed.

It must be noted here that Asif was one of the best swing bowlers of his time. He represented Pakistan in 23 Tests, 38 ODIs and 11 T20Is, bagging 165 wickets.
