T20 World Cup 2024: Jasprit Bumrah adjudged Player of the Tournament

India’s ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah was adjudged the Player of the Tournament at the back of consistently brilliant performances in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

India, on Saturday, ended their 11-year ICC title drought when they came from behind to snatch a nerve-wracking seven-run victory over South Africa, who played their first-ever Men’s World Cup final.

Meanwhile, Bumrah was instrumental in India’s road to glory as he took 15 wickets at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17, backed up by the best bowling figures of 3/7.

Jasprit Bumrah also finished the T20 World Cup 2024 as the second-highest wicket-taker.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Bumrah shared he usually keeps his emotions in check and does not usually cry after matches but the emotions were taking over him.

“Usually, I am the one who tries to keep my emotions in check and get the job done but today I do not have many words, I do not usually cry after a game but the emotions are taking over.

“We were in trouble but we are really over the moon to win from that stage. My family is here, we came close last time and we got the job done, there is no better feeling than to get your team through in a game like this.

“It just felt good, tried to keep myself in a bubble and tried not to think too far ahead.

“When the big day comes, you have to do it, throughout the tournament I felt very clear. I always think about one ball and one over at a time, do not think too far ahead. Emotions can take over, it was taking over but you have to keep it in check but now that the game is over, it can come out and you can scream and shout. (When he was asked to bowl the 16th over) I saw the ball was a bit scuffed up and it would reverse a bit, thought which would be the most difficult shot for the batter and was able to execute it,” he concluded.

Jasprit Bumrah played a pivotal role in scripting India’s comeback in the T20 World Cup 2024 final with his last two overs in which he conceded only six runs and took an important wicket. His match figures read 4-0-18-2.

Ricky Ponting predicts highest run-scorer, wicket-taker for T20 World Cup 2024

Legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting has unveiled his predictions for the highest run-scorer and the top wicket-taker for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, starting from June 1.

Ponting predicted that Indian pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah would be the leading wicket-taker at the mega-event. Meanwhile, for the highest run-getter, Ponting picked Australian top-order batter Travis Head.

The former captain appreciated Bumrah’s ability to swing the ball as well as his impressive economy. Bumrah claimed 20 wickets in 13 games at an economy of 6.48 during the recently concluded IPL.

“My leading wicket-taker for the tournament will be Jasprit Bumrah. I just think an outstanding performer, and contributor for a number of years now. He’s just come off an outstanding IPL,” Ponting told The ICC Review.

“What he can do with the new ball, he swings the new ball, he has the seam up. But at the end, his economy rate at the end of the IPL was less than seven runs an over.

“He takes wickets. He does bowl a lot of the hard overs too. When you bowl the hard overs in T20 cricket, it gives you a chance to pick up a lot of wickets along the way. So, I’m going with him.”

Ricky Ponting then praised Head for his batting prowess across formats in the last two years. Head scored crucial centuries in the finals of the ICC World Test Championship and ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

“My prediction for the leading run-scorer will be Travis Head. I just think everything he’s done, whether it be red-ball or white-ball in the last couple of years, has been of the highest quality. I think he’s playing fearless cricket at the moment,” Ponting said.

“His IPL had its ups and downs, but when it’s been good, it’s been very good. And it has won games of cricket for his team,” Ponting noted.

“And it’ll be exactly the same for Australia. So, look, he might not be the most consistent on the way through this tournament, but he’ll be right up there, I’m sure, with the leading run scorers. And as I’ve said, if he spends any amount of time at the wicket for Australia, he’ll win more games than ever.”

Jasprit Bumrah included in India’s squad for final England Test

India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will return to the team for the last Test against England in Dharamsala, confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday.

Bumrah was rested from the fourth Test, which India won by five wickets and clinched the series with an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

Meanwhile, top-order batter KL Rahul remained unavailable for selection due to a quadricep tendon injury and is currently in London to consult with doctors.

“The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring him and coordinating with specialists in London for further management of his issue,” Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.

The BCCI also shared an update about the injured pacer Mohammed Shami who missed the Test series owing to a heel injury and underwent surgery recently.

“He is recovering well and will soon head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to commence his rehabilitation process,” Shah said of Shami.

Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul out of fourth England Test

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from the fourth Test against England and batsman KL Rahul has been ruled out due to injury, the country’s cricket board said Tuesday.

Bumrah played a key part in India’s last two victories as the hosts took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series but he has been released from the match in Ranchi starting Friday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said: “The decision was taken keeping in mind the duration of the series and amount of cricket he has played in recent times.”

Rahul played the opener but missed the next two matches due to a quadriceps injury and “his participation in the final Test match in Dharamsala is subject to fitness”.

Medium-pace bowler Mukesh Kumar joined the team in Ranchi after he was released from the third Test, which the hosts won by 434 runs on Sunday.

Waqar Younis tells Shaheen Afridi to copy Bumrah World Cup blueprint

Pakistan legend Waqar Younis on Monday advised misfiring strike bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi to learn from India seamer Jasprit Bumrah if he wants to make an impact at the ICC World Cup 2023.

Shaheen Afridi is struggling with his pace and fitness and has been unimpressive in all three games at the ICC World Cup 2023 where his four wickets have come at a cost of 139 runs.

“I don’t know if there is a problem with his fitness,” Waqar, who is in India as a commentator, told AFP.

“The missing link in his bowling is discipline and he is over trying to get wickets.

“When you do the same thing again and again, like Shaheen is bowling to get his yorker going, then batsmen know that and they are ready for it.”

Waqar Younis suggested Shaheen Afridi should follow the example set by Bumrah who he described as a “top bowler.”

The Indian spearhead is the joint top wicket-taker in the ICC World Cup 2023 with eight wickets at just 11.52.

New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner and fast bowler Matt Henry also have eight victims each.

India thumped Pakistan by seven wickets in Ahmedabad on Saturday, with Shaheen unable to help Pakistan defend a meagre 192-run target.

In contrast, Bumrah dismissed Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan with two well-executed deliveries to finish with 2-19 in seven overs.

“Bumrah is creating pressure and his line is top of the off stump. He bowled so well against Pakistan and created pressure to get wickets,” said Waqar.

Shaheen, 23, has been leading Pakistan’s new-ball attack since taking 16 wickets in five World Cup games in the United Kingdom four years ago.

He has been likened to former great Wasim Akram who with 414 Test and 502 ODI wickets was regarded as one of the best left-arm pacers to have played cricket.

But former India allrounder Ravi Shastri blasted the comparison during the Pakistan-India match, saying: “Shaheen is no Wasim Akram”, claiming that the Pakistan star is “not special.”

Waqar believes that the absence of regular new-ball partner Naseem Shah — ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2023 with a shoulder injury — may have had a detrimental effect on Shaheen’s performances so far.

“Naseem is a good bowler and doesn’t give many runs away,” said Waqar of the 20-year-old.

“When Naseem creates pressure, batsmen take chances with other bowlers and they get wickets.”

Waqar Younis said Pakistan’s bowling was “lacking discipline” at the World Cup where three games have yielded two wins and one loss.

“I don’t think it’s because of missing just one bowler, but it’s because they are not keeping it simple.”

Pakistan, who beat the Netherlands and Sri Lanka before losing to India, next face Australia in Bengaluru on Friday.

Shaheen Afridi presents a gift for Jasprit Bumrah’s newborn

COLOMBO: Pakistan speedster Shaheen Shah Afridi took the internet by storm with his kind gesture towards Jasprit Bumrah on the sidelines of the rain-hit PAK vs IND clash in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shared the wholesome interaction of the two rival pacers.

In the video, the left-arm Pakistan pacer can be seen presenting Bumrah with a gift for his newborn baby.

Shaheen Shah Afridi also extended well wishes for the infant while Bumrah expressed gratitude for his kind act.

The highly-anticipated PAK vs IND clash of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 has been postponed to the reserve day on Monday, due to persistent rain, followed by a wet outfield here.

When the rain intervened, India had raced to 147/2 in 24.1 overs with KL Rahul (17*) and Virat Kohli (8*) at the crease.

With no further action possible on Sunday, Rahul and Kohli will resume India’s first innings on the reserve day tomorrow.

Earlier, after being put into bat first in the high-octane PAK vs IND clash, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India a flying start with a magnificent 121-run partnership.

The pair dominated Pakistan’s bowling attack including their pace trio of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah.

Both Gill and Sharma, who struggled against the trio in the previous PAK vs IND clash on September 2, made a sensational comeback.

The duo frustrated Pakistan bowlers before Shadab Khan finally struck in his third over, removing Sharma, soon after he amassed his half-century.

Rohit Sharma smashed six boundaries and four sixes on his way to a brisk 49-ball 56.

Gill, on the other hand, soon followed the footsteps of his captain and walked back to the pavilion in the next over after being outdone by Shaheen Shah Afridi’s slower delivery.

He scored a 52-ball 58 which featured 10 boundaries.

Following the back-to-back blows, star batter Virat Kohli and returning KL Rahul batted cautiously amid their unbeaten 24-run partnership for the third wicket before rain interrupted the PAK vs IND clash.

After the dark clouds scattered and the rain finally decided to ease out, the umpires carried out several field inspections and opted not to resume the action due to a wet outfield.

Sri Lankan groundsmen made desperate efforts to dry out the wet areas by using sponges and fans and when they apparently got the situation under control, rain returned and eventually forced the match to be decided on the reserve day.

Jasprit Bumrah to miss India-Nepal Asia Cup 2023 fixture

India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah on Sunday flew back home due to personal reasons and will miss the team’s group match against Nepal in the Asia Cup 2023, a source told AFP.

Rain looms over the final Group A fixture in Pallekele on Monday, a match which will decide the second team after Pakistan to move into the Super Four Stage of the 50-over tournament.

India’s opening match against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday was abandoned after just one innings due to rain, which is threatening to disrupt more games in the tournament seen as a tune-up to the upcoming World Cup in India.

Even if Monday’s match is washed out India will enter the next stage as they shared points with Pakistan, who thrashed Nepal in the Asia Cup 2023 opener.

Jasprit Bumrah, who has returned to the team after a long injury lay-off and made 16 with the bat in India’s 266 all out, is expected to be back by the next match.
