WATCH: Jay Shah trolled for repeated appearances in WTC Final Promo

The International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman, Jay Shah, has faced backlash over multiple appearances in the World Test Championship (WTC) final video.

In a 45-second video posted on social media, Jay Shah appeared multiple times. The video begins with a breathtaking shot of the iconic Lord’s Pavilion, then cuts to a slow-motion sequence of Jay Shah walking onto the ground.

The Indian administrator is also seen in conversation with ECB chair Richard Thompson, standing and applauding as he steals a sly glance at the camera, and congratulating South Africa’s current and past players.

Overall, Shah featured in 11 of the 23 shots used in the 45-second-long video.

Following the video release, Jay Shah was criticised heavily for his appearance in the WTC final promo.

One of the critics wrote on a social media platform X: “If you blink at the wrong time, you’ll miss the only shot of Pat Cummins.” Another critic described his appearance as ‘beyond weird.

It is noteworthy to mention that South Africa sealed the WTC title after defeating the defending champions, Australia, by five wickets while chasing a challenging 282-run target here on Saturday.

South Africa were 213-2 at the start of day 4, needing only 69 runs to clinch the title. However, Mitchell Starc struck with the prized wicket of Temba Bavuma, who was removed after a well-made 65 despite struggling with an injury.

With only six runs needed to win, Kyle Verreynne joined Bedingham (21) and contributed four of those runs, including the winning run, thus ending South Africa’s ICC title drought.

Aiden Markram starred for South Africa in the second innings after a forgettable six-ball duck in the first innings. He scored a sublime 136 runs, while Kagiso Rabada was pivotal with the ball for the Proteas, taking nine wickets in the match.

Australian journalist blasts ICC over silence on Jay Shah’s controversial post

Renowned Australian journalist Malcolm Conn has taken aim at the International Cricket Council (ICC), accusing the sport’s governing body of “staggering hypocrisy” following a controversial social media post by ICC chairman Jay Shah.

Shah stirred criticism after he posted a statement on Instagram expressing solidarity with the Indian armed forces amid recent border tensions with Pakistan.

“Our Armed Forces are our pride, and no words are enough to express their valour and commitment in protecting our motherland and people,” Shah wrote.

“We salute our brave men and women in the armed forces who are shielding our nation from terrorism. Let us unite to honour our heroes and build a stronger, more united India.”

While the post was later deleted, it raised eyebrows internationally, especially given the position of Jay Shah as the head of a supposedly neutral global body.

Malcolm Conn, the former chief cricket writer at the Sydney Morning Herald, questioned the ICC’s silence, particularly in contrast to its treatment of Usman Khawaja during Australia’s Test series against Pakistan in December 2023.

Khawaja, born in Pakistan and a practising Muslim, had planned a subtle protest by wearing shoes bearing the messages: “Freedom is a human right” and “All lives are equal” in support of human rights amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

However, after being informed that it violated ICC regulations, he withdrew the idea and instead wore a black armband during the first Test.

Despite the toned-down gesture, the ICC reprimanded Khawaja, citing it as a “personal message”, sparking widespread debate over double standards.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Conn criticised the ICC for its approach to political messaging, particularly for appearing to favour certain voices over others.

“So Usman Khawaja is banned by the ICC from putting a dove on his bat supporting peace in the Middle East, but ICC chairman Jay Shah, son of India’s home affairs minister, can openly support the Indian military during conflict.
Staggering hypocrisy,” he posted.

Cricket West Indies CEO reveals why Jay Shah was elected ICC chairman unopposed

The CEO of Cricket West Indies (CWI) Johnny Grave on Thursday revealed how Jay Shah was unanimously elected as the new Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

During an interview with an Indian news channel, Grave acknowledged the support for the leadership of Jay Shah within the cricketing community.

The West Indian also lauded Shah for his tenure as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as well as his substantial contributions to world cricket.

“The ICC board doesn’t want to waste too much time on internal politics. If you look at Jay’s leadership at the BCCI, it has been wonderful,” Cricket West Indies CEO Johnny Grave said.

“He has hosted the Women’s Premier League, successfully oversaw the 50-over World Cup in India and has signed huge broadcast deals with IPL and for BCCI.”

Grave confidently stated that Jay Shah is exceptionally well-suited to take on the role of ICC chairman. He expressed a strong belief that with Shah at the helm, the interests of global cricket would be significantly advanced.

For the unversed, Jay Shah was the sole candidate for the position after Greg Barclay, who hails from New Zealand, declined to seek a third tenure.

According to a statement released by the ICC, Shah will assume the role on December 1, 2024.

“Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah, who has served as the BCCI Honorary Secretary since October 2019 and Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will assume this prestigious role on December 1, 2024,” said ICC.

Former Pakistan captain urges Jay Shah to show “sportsman spirit”

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan urged newly-elected International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah to show sportsman spirit and ensure India’s visit to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025.

Younis welcomed Shah’s appointment as the new ICC Chair and urged the latter to do the needful to uplift the sport of cricket.

“The cricket should uplift with the appointment of Jay Shah as the ICC chief,” said Younis Khan.

“Jay Shah needs to show the sportsman spirit, as with the good initiatives of the ICC chief, India can come to Pakistan to play cricket. In the same way, Pakistan can visit India,” he added.

The T20 World Cup-winning captain also commented on Pakistan’s gut-wrenching 10-wicket defeat against Bangladesh in the first Test of the two-match series and demanded the national team to play for the sake of the country.

“There is always a pressure to play cricket in home conditions. What is the benefit to the players if they cannot absorb the pressure? There is a dire need for the players to boost their morale.”

“Everybody has seen that whether the pitch was fast or slow.

“We have clinched victories at that time when no international cricket was happening in the country.”

Younis Khan then went on to react to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s statement of having no pool of players to perform surgery of the national men’s team.

“I have no idea why the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman has talked about having no talent in domestic cricket,” Younis said.

“We have immense talent in our domestic cricket.”

Jay Shah will pave way for India’s visit to Pakistan: Rashid Latif

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif expressed optimism about the possibility of India visiting Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 after the election of Jay Shah as the new Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled in the February-March window, will be hosted by Pakistan. However, India’s participation in the tournament is still uncertain due to the political tensions between the neighbouring countries.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) representatives, on numerous occasions, said the Federal government will decide to send their national men’s team to Pakistan.

Meanwhile, on 27 August, Jay Shah, who was serving as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, was elected unopposed as the ICC Chairman.

During a discussion on his YouTube channel, Rashid Latif mentioned that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chose not to challenge Shah’s election, which seems like a deliberate strategy to ensure India’s visit to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.

“PCB has not opposed Shah’s appointment for a reason. I think there’s an understanding. If India’s team comes, it will be because of Jay Shah’s efforts, along with support from their government,” Rashid said.

“Approval has already been halfway granted. India is coming to Pakistan,” the former captain predicted.

Remember, reports emerged in Indian media, citing a source from the BCCI, that the Indian team will not be visiting Pakistan for the upcoming ICC event.

Further reports claimed that the board has formally proposed Dubai and Sri Lanka as potential venues for hosting India’s matches.

Previously, India refused to travel to Pakistan to participate in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023. As a result, the continental event was held in a hybrid model with Sri Lanka stepping in as a co-host.

It is worth noting that India has not travelled to Pakistan since the Asia Cup in 2008 due to the long-standing political tensions between the two neighbouring countries.

Jay Shah set to replace Greg Barclay as ICC chairman

Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is reportedly poised to assume the role of chairman at the International Cricket Council (ICC) after allegedly compelling the current head, Greg Barclay, to step down from his position.

Barclay, who hails from New Zealand, assumed the role in November 2020, however, he has recently informed ICC directors about his intention to resign.

Meanwhile, Jay Shah has repeatedly expressed his desire to take over as the ICC chairman, having claimed the support from other boards.

Jay Shah opens up on Kohli, Rohit’s absence from Duleep Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah revealed the reason behind the absence of star batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from this year’s edition of the Duleep Trophy.

When probed about the absence of senior batters from the domestic tournament, the BCCI Secretary gave a blunt reply, stating that they may sustain injury.

Shah’s statement came when India are set to play 10 Tests from September to January. The upcoming busy schedule commences next month when the two-time World Test Championship (WTC) finalists take on Bangladesh in a two-match series.

Jay Shah also coined examples of top cricket-playing nations like Australia and England, asserting that not all of their key players domestic cricket often.

However, contrary to Shah’s claims, England Test captain Ben Stokes recently featured in the County Championship, representing Durham while his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins, is likely to feature in the Sheffield Series, according to a report by ESPN Cricinfo.

“We should not insist on players like Rohit and Virat to play in the Duleep Trophy. They will risk injury. If you have noticed, in Australia and England, every international player does not play domestic cricket. We have to treat the players with respect,” Jay Shah was quoted as saying by ANI.

“Apart from them, everyone else is playing. You should appreciate that,” said Shah.

“One must note that Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer are playing in the Buchi Babu tournament.”
