Champions Trophy: Jos Buttler banks on PSL experience ahead of Australia match

LAHORE: England captain Jos Buttler has emphasized the importance of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) experience ahead of their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener against Australia.

Speaking to the media in Lahore, Buttler expressed confidence in his side while acknowledging the challenges posed by local conditions.

“We had a few practice sessions in Lahore, which have been quite beneficial,” he said. “Our top three batters are in great form, and we’ll be looking to step onto the field with a solid combination.”

With England set to face tough competition, Jos Buttler highlighted the significance of putting runs on the board.

“We will try to score as many runs as possible to put pressure on the opposition,” he added.

He recognized the challenges his team faced during their time in India, where the conditions proved difficult and unfavourable.

Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that the valuable experience his teammates gained while competing in the PSL would serve as a crucial advantage.

“The conditions here in Pakistan will be different from India,” he stated. “However, we have players in our squad who have played in the PSL, and they are sharing their experience with us, which is proving to be valuable.”

England will kick off their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign on February 22 against arch-rivals Australia at Lahore’s newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium.

The second group match will be against Afghanistan on February 26, also at Gaddafi Stadium, while their final group stage encounter is scheduled for March 1 against South Africa at the National Stadium in Karachi.

It’s worth noting that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on 20 February revealed their Playing XI for the match against Australia.

England Playing XI for Australia clash: Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith (wk), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (c), Liam Livingstone, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Mark Wood.

Jos Buttler criticizes India’s use of Harshit Rana as concussion sub

England captain Jos Buttler has questioned the decision to bring pacer Harshit Rana as a concussion substitute for batting all-rounder Shivam Dube in the fourth T20I against India on Friday.

Controversy erupted in the fourth game of the five-match T20I series when India brought Rana as a concussion sub for Dube, who copped a blow to his helmet on the second-last ball of the penultimate over of their inning.

After a check-up, the Indian physio allowed Dube to play the final ball and was run out after scoring 53 runs from 34 balls.

He, however, did not take to the field in England’s innings due to the concussion and Rana took the field in his place. Rana went on to take three key wickets, contributing to India’s victory.

England captain raised questions over the decision to allow India to bring the pacer as a concussion sub for a batting all-rounder.

“It is not a like-for-like replacement. We don’t agree with that,” Jos Buttler said after the match. “Either Shivam Dube has put on about 25mph with the ball or Harshit [Rana] has really improved his batting.”

“It’s part of the game and we really should have gone on to win the match, but we disagree with the decision.”

As per the ICC’s playing conditions for men’s T20Is, “The ICC Match Referee should ordinarily approve a Concussion Replacement Request if the replacement is a like-for-like player whose inclusion will not excessively advantage his/her team for the remainder of the match.”

“In assessing whether the nominated Concussion Replacement should be considered a like-for-like player, the ICC Match Referee should consider the likely role the concussed player would have played during the remainder of the match, and the normal role that would be performed by the nominated Concussion Replacement.”

Jos Buttler also lamented that the match officials did not consult with him before the decision.

“There was no consultation [with us]. That’s something I was thinking as I came out to bat – who is Harshit on for? They said he is a concussion replacement, which I obviously disagreed with,” he added.

“It is not a like-for-like replacement. They said that the match referee had made the decision. We had no say in it or any part of it. But we’ll ask Javagal [Srinath] some questions just to get some clarity around it.”

Jos Buttler rejects calls for England to boycott Afghanistan match

England captain Jos Buttler stated that his side’s match against Afghanistan at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 should go ahead after calls for a boycott over the Taliban regime’s assault on women’s rights.

A group of more than 160 British politicians have written to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) calling for England not to play the match against Afghanistan in Lahore on February 26.

Since returning to power in 2021 the Taliban have effectively banned the participation of women in both sports as well as broader public life.

That puts the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) at odds with the rules of the governing body the International Cricket Council (ICC).

However, Jos Buttler said sports and politics should be kept separate.

“Political situations like this, as a player you’re trying to be as informed as you can be,” he told reporters ahead of the first T20 against India in Kolkata on Wednesday.

“The experts know a lot more about it, so I’ve been trying to stay in dialogue with Rob Key (managing director of ECB) and the guys above to see how they see it.

“I don’t think a boycott is the way to go about it,” he added.

“Certainly as a player, you don’t want political situations to affect sport. We hope to go to the Champions Trophy and play that game and have a really good tournament.”

The ECB has resisted calls for a boycott, with chief executive Richard Gould saying instead he would “actively advocate” for collective action by the ICC instead.

The ICC has allowed the Afghanistan men’s team to keep competing in global competitions.

England are clubbed with Afghanistan, Australia and South Africa in the group phase of the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19.

Jos Buttler’s blitz powers England to edge past West Indies

BRIDGETOWN: England captain Jos Buttler played a rampaging 83-run knock to power his team to an emphatic seven-wicket victory over the West Indies in the second match of the T20I series at Kensington Oval on Sunday.

Responding to the home side’s total of 158 for eight, Buttler took the match by the scruff of the neck in belting eight fours and six sixes off only 45 balls to turn a potentially challenging target into a romp.

England 161-3 in just 14.4 overs to take a 2-0 lead heading into the final three matches of the series against West Indies.

Coming to the crease off just the second ball of the innings after Phil Salt had fallen on the first ball to spinner Akeal Hosein, Buttler attacked the West Indies bowling attack from the word go.

Notably, West Indies were missing suspended pacer Alzarri Joseph and injured fast-bowling all-rounder Andre Russell.

Jos Buttler appeared in line to smash his second T20I hundred after being badly dropped by Sherfane Rutherford at extra-cover off Romario Shepherd in the 13th over.

However, the England skipper fell next ball as another attempt to heave over the top found his West Indies counterpart, Rovman Powell at long-off.

Buttler inevitably dominated a second-wicket stand of 129 with Will Jacks, who contributed 38 off 29 balls with five fours and one six.

“It was scratchy for the first couple of balls but when I got going I really enjoyed it. It was great to be back out there,” said Buttler on receiving the “Player of the Match” award

Jacks was the first of two wickets for Shepherd, taken at the second attempt at long-off by Matthew Forde, who had earlier played his part together with the rest of the West Indies lower-order to give the innings useful late impetus after they were put into bat on a surface freshened by steady rain throughout the early morning.

Powell topscored with 43 off 41 balls (two fours, two sixes) but his demise in the 16th over left the innings in trouble at 102 for six. Shepherd’s 22 off 12 balls breathed some late life into the home side’s effort with the support of the tail.

Liam Livingstone was the best of the bowlers with two for 16 and was there at the end to seal victory with an unbeaten 23 off 11 balls.

However, nothing could take the shine off Buttler’s assault which leaves England well-poised to avenge a 2-1 loss to the West Indies in the preceding ODI series.

Buttler named in England squad for white-ball series against West Indies

LONDON: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday, announced a 14-member squad for the upcoming white-ball series against West Indies, marking the return of their regular captain Jos Buttler.

Buttler missed the recent T20I and ODI series against Australia as he continued his recovery from a calf injury.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire leg-spinner Jafer Chohan earned his maiden call-up, becoming the first graduate of the South Asian Cricket Academy to be selected to an England Men’s squad.

Besides Chohan, John Turner and Dan Mousley are the other uncapped players. The duo were a part of the recent white-ball squads against Australia while Turner also toured the West Indies last December.

Harry Brook to lead England against Australia as Jos Buttler ruled out

Harry Brook will lead England in the ODI series against Australia after regular white-ball captain Jos Buttler was ruled out.

Jos Buttler is currently nursing a right calf injury, which ruled him out of the ongoing T20I series against Australia, where Phil Salt is serving as the captain.

It’s worth noting that this will be Harry Brook’s first stint as the captain of England’s ODI team.

Meanwhile, pace bowler Josh Hull is also sidelined for the ODI series with a quad injury. All-rounder Liam Livingstone has been brought into the squad for the five-match series which begins as Trent Bridge on Thursday 19 September.

Previously, England also included Olly Stone in the squad as the replacement for Gus Atkinson, who has been given a rest from the ODI series against Australia.

The right-arm pacer played a pivotal role in England’s 2-1 series victory over Sri Lanka, picking up 12 wickets at an average of 27.41.

He turned heads with his batting skills in the recently concluded series when he scored his maiden century in the second Test at Lord’s while batting at No.8.

Gus Atkinson was initially named in England’s ODI squad which marked the absence of key players like wicketkeeper batter Jonny Bairstow and experienced all-rounder Moeen Ali.

Brendon McCullum vows to push ‘miserable’ Jos Buttler

England’s newly appointed white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum shared his plans for the “miserable” Jos Buttler, stating he wants the latter to enjoy the next three or four years.

McCullum, who reinvigorated England’s Test side alongside skipper Ben Stokes after assuming the head coach role in 2022, seeks to inject a similar approach to the limited-overs teams.

The former New Zealand captain extended his contract until the end of 2027, officially taking over the reins of England’s white-ball men’s teams in January ahead of their tour of India and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

One of Brendon McCullum’s emphases was to revive the fortunes of limited-overs captain Jos Buttler, who according to him, is not naturally expressive.

“He’s not naturally as expressive as some may be but I think he’s done a great job. He’s an incredibly gifted player and he’s a fine leader,” said McCullum.

“My job is to get the best out of him so that all those guys that sit in the dressing room feel like they can be 10 feet tall and bulletproof when they walk out to play.”

The former New Zealand captain added: “Jos and I actually start from a strong base. We know each other, we’re mates, we have similar styles of play.

“If he was to retire today, he’d go down as probably the greatest white-ball player England’s ever produced, so the opportunity for the next three or four years is just to enjoy it.”

Notably, Jos Buttler will miss England’s upcoming T20I series against arch-rivals Australia due to a calf injury but Brendon McCullum backed the skipper he called England’s greatest-ever white-ball player to come good in the twilight of his career.

England stare at potential setback ahead of Australia T20Is

England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler is doubtful for his side’s upcoming home T20I series against Australia, scheduled to commence on September 11.

According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, Buttler suffered a setback on his road to recovery from a calf injury and was consequently ruled out of the T20 Blast quarter-final between Lancashire and Sussex on September 4.

The England captain has been away from professional cricket since England’s defeat in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final against eventual champions India.

He sustained a calf injury in July amid his preparations for The Hundred 2024 and had been gearing up to make his long-awaited return at T20 Blast quarter-final.

Lancashire coach Dale Benkenstein confirmed Jos Buttler’s unavailability to BBC Radio Lancashire.

“We’ve had some bad news on his recovery,” Benkenstein said.

“He had an injury he was recovering from, and he’s sort of tweaked it again. He’s not only just out of our T20s, but I think he’s even struggling to make the international ones. He was very keen to play for us.”

Details further suggested that England are not overly concerned about their white-ball captain’s fitness ahead of the series opener and are hopeful that Buttler would be able to lead in all eight white-ball fixtures against Australia.

England’s T20I squad is set to report to the Utilita Bowl on Sunday ahead of a two-day training camp and that is when England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) medical panel is likely to assess Buttler’s condition.

Buttler is unlikely to keep wickets in the T20I series which hints at broader chances that he would be able to attain enough fitness.

Notably, England do not have an official white-ball vice-captain but Sam Curran and Phil Salt are the strong candidates to lead the former champions in the series if Jos Buttler fails to make a cut.
