Andrew Flintoff leaves England coaching setup after Jos Buttler clash

Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff parted ways with the national team’s coaching setup ahead of the upcoming series against Australia after reports of his strained relations with white-ball captain Jos Buttler.

England is scheduled to play a three-match T20I series and a five-match ODI series against arch-rivals Australia, however, the former all-rounder would not be part of England’s team management during the series.

The 46-year-old Flintoff joined England’s white-ball setup in 2023 and served as the team’s assistant coach during the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

England struggled in the early stages of the tournament, however, they bounced back and reached the semi-finals, where they were defeated by eventual champions India.

There were reports indicating that Andrew Flintoff and team captain Jos Buttler had a strained relationship during the ICC T20 World Cup, which ultimately resulted in the former all-rounder leaving the team.

Notably, Flintoff joined England’s coaching setup on a short-term basis, and he hasn’t held a full-time contract.

Flintoff, recently, conveyed his deep affection for the sport of cricket and expressed his profound gratitude for the opportunity to be actively engaged in the game as a coach.

“Cricket has given me so much. It’s all I ever wanted to do as a kid and I got the opportunity to live my dream,” said Flintoff.

“I feel really lucky to be back here and I want the lads to cherish playing. When you finish playing, you look back and it passes so quickly, but you just take time when you’re out there, just to have a look around and take it in and live in the moment.

“And that’s what I’m doing these days. It’s living in the moment and enjoying it. And that’s something I want the players to do, and the teams that play under me to do as well.”

England captain Buttler likely to miss third T20I against Pakistan

CARDIFF: England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler will miss the third T20I of the four-match series against Pakistan on paternity leave, ESPN Cricinfo reported Monday.

According to the report, Buttler left for London after spearheading England to a comfortable 23-run victory over Pakistan in the second T20I in Birmingham.

The England captain and his wife Louise are expecting the birth of their third child soon.

Notably, Jos Buttler was absent from England’s training session in Cardiff on Monday afternoon and is unlikely to feature in the third T20I against Pakistan, scheduled on Tuesday evening.

Moreover, it is uncertain whether Buttler will return in time for the final T20I against Pakistan but as things stand he is most likely to accompany the England squad on their departure for the West Indies for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday.

Earlier, England’s vice-captain Moeen Ali, who has led the side in 12 ODIs and T20Is, stated that nothing will change if he assumes the England captaincy role in Jos Buttler’s absence.

“I feel I’ve captained enough for England,” Moeen said.

“I’ll be fine. Nothing will change too much, it’s just taking over from what he’s doing and then when he comes back, he takes over.

“Hopefully, the baby comes at the right time where he doesn’t miss too many games.

“For me, it’s just whatever will happen, will happen. It’s not really difficult, to be honest with you, because we speak often, me and Jos. We talk about other things, the team and all that. We’re on the same page anyway.”

BIRMINGHAM: England captain Jos Buttler on Saturday, became only the ninth batter to complete 3000 runs in T20 Internationals.

The wicketkeeper batter joined the likes of Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, Rohit Sharma, David Warner and others in the elusive list.

Buttler amassed the landmark in the 17th over of England’s innings when he took a single off Mohammad Amir for his 73rd run.

The right-handed batter perished in the next over after top-scoring for England with a 51-ball 84 which featured eight fours and three sixes.

  • Virat Kohli
  • Babar Azam
  • Rohit Sharma

Put into bat first, England registered a formidable total of 183/7 on the board, courtesy of Jos Buttler’s captain’s knock.

He put together important partnerships with Will Jacks and Jonny Bairstow respectively to put England into a commanding position after a scratchy start.

With Jos Buttler and Bairstow at the crease, England looked on course to breach the 200-run barrier but Pakistan bowlers pulled things back with tight death bowling to restrict the hosts to a par total.

Shaheen Shah Afridi led the bowling attack for Pakistan with three wickets, followed by Imad Wasim and Haris, who bagged two each.

Moeen Ali ready to lead England in Jos Buttler’s absence

BIRMINGHAM: Spin all-rounder Moeen Ali stated Friday that he is ready to lead England in the absence of white-ball captain Jos Buttler.

England’s white-ball captain Buttler and his wife Louise are expecting the birth of their third child soon. As a result, the wicketkeeper batter may miss a part of the ongoing four-match series against Pakistan or the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Meanwhile, England’s vice-captain Moeen Ali, who has led the side in 12 ODIs and T20Is, stated that nothing will change if he assumes the England captaincy role in Buttler’s absence.

“I feel I’ve captained enough for England,” Moeen said.

“I’ll be fine. Nothing will change too much, it’s just taking over from what he’s doing and then when he comes back, he takes over.

“Hopefully, the baby comes at the right time where he doesn’t miss too many games.

Moeen further expressed his disappointment with the first T20I against Pakistan being washed out but asserted that the upcoming three matches would be enough for the reigning champions to gear up for the title defence.

“It was obviously disappointing (on Wednesday) because Leeds is a great place to go and play.

“Playing cricket is always the best preparation. I know most of the guys have been playing. A few guys have been training but it’s not the same, so hopefully they’ll get some game time.

“These three games should be enough for the guys to get going and there’s a bit of time in the West Indies, a few training sessions. We’ll be fine. There’s no real excuses from our side.”

Notably, the four-match T20I series between Pakistan and England, scheduled to run from May 22 to 30, will serve as a final opportunity for both teams to gear up for the T20 World Cup 2024 as the previous edition’s finalists will skip the warm-up matches for this year’s mega event.

England captain Jos Buttler upbeat for Pakistan’s bowling challenge

LEEDS: Jos Buttler expressed his excitement for the mouth-watering battle between England’s strong batting and Pakistan’s renowned bowling in the upcoming four-match T20I series, scheduled to commence on Wednesday.

Buttler, while addressing the pre-series conference here at Headingley, talked about the various aspects of the all-important T20I series against Pakistan in a build-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The wicketkeeper batter, however, looks forward the most to the “exciting” clash between his side’s explosive batting abilities and Pakistan’s bowling, which is considered their strength in world cricket.

“I think, we have fantastic batters, including myself and I’m always probably aware of the fantastic bowlers they have like Shaheen, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah,” stated Buttler.

“It would be a really good test with that seam bowling unit so we are looking forward to that challenge,” he added.

Jos Buttler then provided an update regarding the returning Jofra Archer, stating that the right-arm speedster is completely and bowling fast in the nets.

“Big smile on his face. It’s great to see him back and fit and bowling fast, just being back around the group. I know how much he’s missed that so to have him in the sport is fantastic.

“Yeah, [I] faced him in the nets. It’s never that fun but yeah, he’s looking great,” he added.

For the unversed, the four-match T20I series between Pakistan and England, scheduled to run from May 22 to 30, will serve as a warm-up for both teams heading into the T20 World Cup 2024.

Buttler credits Pakistan tour as key part of their journey to T20 WC title

MELBOURNE: T20 World Cup-winning captain Jos Buttler credited England’s Tour of Pakistan in September and October as a key part of their journey to win the recently-concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Buttler, in an exclusive interview with ESPN Cricinfo, commented on England’s journey and T20 World Cup 2022 glory before terming England’s tour of Pakistan for the seven-match T20I series a really good tour for the entire squad.

“I’d say the Pakistan tour – for the group, not just myself and the coach but for everyone involved, just seemed like a really good tour,” Buttler said.

“Lots of bonds were built, and I thought we got back to playing some really good cricket there. It takes a bit of time to get to know people well and get to feel comfortable, and there’s so much talent in the group that, as soon as we feel comfortable, we’re a dangerous team,” he added.

It is pertinent to mention that despite the absence of their regular captain Buttler, opener Jonny Bairstow and all-rounders Ben Stokes and Liam Livingstone, England edged Pakistan 4-3 to win the seven-match series.

The two sides then met in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2022 Final, where Buttler’s men once again sank Pakistan to lift their second T20 title.

PAK v ENG: Moeen unsure of Buttler’s readiness for last two T20Is

LAHORE: England stand-in captain Moeen Ali believed that his side must not risk its key player, Jos Buttler, with the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2022 just around the corner.

England white-ball captain Buttler, who has been recovering from a calf injury, has not played so far in the ongoing seven-match series against Pakistan.

Speaking at a post-match press conference on Wednesday, Moeen did not rule out the possibility of Buttler taking the reigns of the England team for the remaining two T20Is of the series as he had been training in the nets and recovered well.

“Personally, I don’t think we’ll risk such a big player (Buttler) for us with World Cup just around the corner,” he said. “But he might wake up and say that I feel good. We know he has recovered well…So he might turn up tomorrow and say look I seem playing and I’m good,” he added.

Talking about England’s defeat in the fifth T20I after a nail-biting final over, Moeen gave credit to the debutant Aamir Jamal for holding his nerves and bowling really well on his debut to defend 15 runs in the last over.

“Unfortunately I manage to get one (six) but it was a very good last over and you can’t take anything away from him (Jamal),’ said England’s captain.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan beat England by six runs to go 3-2 up in the historic seven-match T20I series.

‘Won’t take risk on Buttler before World Cup’ England coach Mott

KARACHI: England white-ball head coach Mathew Mott reiterated that the side would not take undue risks with Jos Buttler ahead of ICC T20 World 2022 in Australia.

England white-ball captain Buttler, who has been recovering from a calf injury, has not played so far in the ongoing seven-match series against Pakistan.

Mott, while speaking at a post-match press conference, expressed that Buttler might get a chance in the last two matches of the series.

“With regard to Jos (Buttler), he’s still a while off, he’s not a player we want to take a risk on at this stage, so close to the World Cup, and it was a reasonably significant injury that he had,” he said.

“But we’ll just try and see how we go and maybe in the last game or two we might give him a chance,” he added.

Talking about the nail-biting fourth T20I between the two teams, the England coach called it an ‘amazing game of cricket’ and ‘fantastic opportunity’ for the player to learn how to play under pressure.

Pakistan defeated England by just three runs in the final over after a sensational display of pace bowling by pacer Haris Rauf in the 19th over.

“When we sent them (Pakistan) to batting, we were expecting 200 but they made that (167-run target) enough” he maintained.

Pakistan have levelled the series 2-2 following their win on Sunday with the fifth game scheduled at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

‘Should be a wake-up call’ Jos Buttler on Ben Stokes’ ODI retirement

DURHAM: England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler has opened up on the shocking ODI retirement of Ben Stokes and said that his retirement should be a wake-up call.

Stokes, who announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday, citing that the three formats are unsustainable for him, shook the cricketing fraternity regarding the gruelling schedule for the cricketers.

“Three formats are just unsustainable for me now. Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel that I am taking the place of another player who can give Jos and the rest of the team their all. It’s time for someone else to progress as a cricketer and make incredible memories like I have over the past 11 years,” Stokes said.

The world cup-winning all-rounder then made strong remarks about the busy schedule on Tuesday morning by saying that ‘we are not cars’.

“We are not cars, you can’t just fill us up with petrol or diesel,” he stated.

“We had a Test series and then the one-day team had a series going on at the same time – that was a bit silly,” he maintained.

After England’s fifth defeat out of the seven matches since Eoin Morgan’s retirement, newly-appointed England captain Buttler urged that it should be a wake-up call for the authorities.

“It should definitely be a bit of a wake-up call. Absolutely. Especially with the magnitude of the player. Ben’s one of the most recognisable players in world cricket, someone everyone wants to see play in every format,” Buttler said in a post-match press conference after England’s 62-run loss to South Africa in the series opener.

“I’m sure there’s more to it than the schedules etc but I think in international cricket you always want your best players playing if possible,” he further added.

England’s white-ball captain Buttler then went on to term Stokes’ ODI retirement bittersweet as it will give Stokes ample time to give it all in the longest form of the game.

“It’s bittersweet as an England fan. There’s a bit of sadness that Ben is no longer available in this form of the game. But our loss in ODI cricket is certainly going to be England’s gain in Test cricket,” Buttler stated.

“That’s his favoured format and his priority, especially now he’s captain, and I’m sure it will give him much more longevity in the purest form of the game,” he added.

Buttler to lead as ECB announces white-ball squad for India series

LONDON: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the white-ball squads for their home series against India under the leadership of newly-appointed captain Jos Buttler.

Buttler, who took up the captaincy role yesterday after England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan hung up his boots from international cricket, will be leading a completely different side in T20Is from their ongoing fifth Test against India.

The Lancashire seamer Richard Gleeson earned his maiden T20I call-up and could make his debut in the forthcoming home series against India. He is the joint-most leading English wicket-taker in the ongoing Vitality Blast, having taken 20 wickets.

Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jonny Bairstow, however, will be part of the ODI squad. Meanwhile, Root’s inclusion in the ODIs will result in Dawid Malan losing his spot at No.3.

The young all-rounder Harry Brook, named in both ODI and T20I squads is likely to be the main beneficiary of Morgan’s retirement and looks set for an opportunity in the middle order.

England’s key leg spinner Adil Rashid, who will miss the series in order to make the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, provided a long-awaited opportunity to Matt Parkinson, who will be playing his first white-ball international after nearly a year.

The home side will lock horns with India in three T20Is and as many ODIs from July 7 to 17.
