Vaughan supports Buttler for England’s limited-overs captaincy

LONDON: England’s former captain Michael Vaughan has put his weight behind Jos Buttler to lead his side in the limited-overs format while calling him the best white-ball player in the world.

After England’s white-ball skipper Eoin Morgan is reportedly set to retire from international cricket, Vaughan backed wicket-keeper batter, Buttler, for the role, in his recent column for The Telegraph.

“For me, it’s a no-brainer that Jos Buttler takes over that role. He’s the best white-ball player in the world, he’s got a very smart cricket brain, and he’s got that calmness you need,” said Vaughan in his column.

Vaughan also advocated for Buttler’s inclusion in the Test squad as he believed the wicketkeeper fit well with the aggressive mindset of England’s new regime under head coach Brendon McCullum and skipper Ben Stokes.

“England have this fearless, aggressive nature, and the balls don’t seem to be doing as much in the UK as they have done in previous seasons. If something as radical Buttler as Test opener was ever going to work it would be now, under this management group of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum,” he concluded.

The 31-year-old known for his aggressive batting style has a phenomenal record both in T20I and ODIs. His powerful knock of 162 off 70 balls remained instrumental when England smashed the highest total in ODI cricket, recently against the Netherlands.

In all, Buttler scored 4120 runs in 151 ODIs averaging 41.20 with 10 centuries and 21 half-centuries. Meanwhile, he appeared in 88 T20Is, scoring 2140 runs at an average of 34.5 with 15 half-centuries and a century to his name.

Buttler’s onslaught powers England to better their ODI World Record

AMSTERDAM: England National Men’s Cricket Team have smashed the highest total in the history of ODI cricket as the touring side finished at 498/4 in the allotted 50 overs in the first ODI, here on Friday.

England’s wicket-keeper batter Jos Buttler carried on his sublime form with the bat and propelled his side to the highest ODI total.

In the record-breaking innings, England were off to an unwanted as the side lost their explosive batter Jason Roy, who was castled by his cousin Shane Snater for a combined score of one.

The young opener Phil Salt alongside the former top-ranked T20I batter Dawid Malan then anchored the innings and laid the foundation of a commendable total.

The pair put on a magnificent 222-run stand for the second wicket with both scoring centuries before Salt fell to Logan van Beek in the 30th over. He scored 122 off just 93 balls with the help of 14 boundaries and three sixes.

Malan, however, who was a touch slow then entered into another match-defining partnership with England’s hero of the day Buttler.

Buttler’s astounding knock then changed the dynamics of the match as his blistering century soon saw England cross the 400-run mark in the 44th over.

In the 45th over, the depleted home side found a moment to cherish as Pieter Seelaar struck twice in two consecutive balls to remove Malan and the skipper Eoin Morgan.

The left-handed batter faced only 109 deliveries and smashed a dozen boundaries including three sixes in his anchoring knock of 125 runs. Captain Morgan, on the other hand, bagged a golden duck in a high-scoring match.

The sudden blow, however, did not affect the touring side much as the newly-arrived Liam Livingstone joined the party and sailed the ball all over the park.

The right-handed batter Livingstone further added to the misery of the home side when he took Phillippe Boissevan’s 46th over for 32 runs with the help of four gigantic sixes and two boundaries.

The touring side then lost their march toward the 500-run mark by a thin margin as they finished at the new highest ODI total of 498/4 in the allotted 50 overs.

England’s top-scorer Buttler remained unbeaten on 162 off just 70 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and 14 sixes. His 150 was the joint-fastest in the ODIs.

Livingstone, on the other hand, who earlier missed the opportunity to smash the fastest ODI fifty finished not-out on 66 off just 22 balls including six boundaries and as many sixes. The right-handed batter, however, has marked himself into the record book with the second-fastest ODI fifty after South Africa’s Ab de Villers.

The home side bowlers had a day to forget as they were taken for plenty in their respective allotted overs. Seelaar, however, was their pick of the bowlers with his two wickets while van Beek remained the most economical with a wicket.

It is pertinent to mention here that England have bettered their own record of the highest ODI total. The second-ranked ODI side previously scored 481/5 against Australia in 2018.

T20 World Cup: Jos Buttler stars as England thrash Australia

Jos Buttler scored an unbeaten match-winning fifty as England thrashed Australia by eight wickets in their T20 World Cup group stage match in Dubai on Saturday.

The wicketkeeper-batter remained not out at 71 from 32 deliveries after hitting five boundaries and as many sixes as England reached the 126-run target in 11.4 overs.

Jos Buttler put on a 66-run opening partnership with Jason Roy (22 from 20) as well.

England won the toss and chose to bowl. The decision proved to be the right one as their bowlers ran riot over the Australian batting lineup.

Aaron Finch-led side were dismissed for just 125 in their 20 overs. The skipper top-scored with 49-ball 44 with four boundaries to his name. However, it was not enough for the side to post a competitive total.

Chris Jordan was the pick of the bowlers with his three-wicket haul. Chris Woakes and Tymal Mills bagged two wickets each as well.

‘Would love to dismiss big players like Kohli, Buttler’ Usman Qadir

Karachi: Pakistan’s leg-spinner Usman Qadir has set his eyes on dismissing world-class batters, including Virat Kohli, Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler.
The 27-year-old Usman, son of legendary leg-spinner Late Abdul Qadir, opined that bowling to top-quality batters increases the confidence of a bowler.
“There are so many world-class players like Morgan, Jos Buttler, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. When you pick up the wickets of such batsmen, your confidence goes to the next level and it also gives you experience. So I would really want to bowl to these batsmen and dismiss them,” Usman Qadir told Cricket Pakistan.
On the other hand, Usman was in awe of captain Babar Azam, who has the ability to put pressure on the opposition by keeping the scoreboard ticking.
“In the 3-4 games that I have played in the PSL, I realized that it is difficult to bowl to Babar. He has the capability to hit boundaries at will and is always keen to take singles and rotate strikes. He even puts away good deliveries for boundaries,” Usman Qasir added.
It must be noted that Usman is currently in Abu Dhabi and he will be representing Multan Sultans in PSL 6 remainder.
