West Indies suffer major blow ahead of Pakistan ODIs

TRINIDAD: West Indies have suffered a setback ahead of their three-match ODI series against Pakistan as fast bowler Matthew Forde has been ruled out due to a shoulder injury.

The series will begin later today at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba. Notably, all three matches in the series will be played at the same venue, with the second and third fixtures scheduled for August 10 and 12, respectively.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed via its official social media channels that Matthew Forde dislocated his left shoulder while attempting a catch during Wednesday’s training session.

Uncapped academy pacer Johann Layne has been named as his replacement for the series.

Layne will join Jayden Seales, Shamar Joseph, Romario Shepherd, and Jediah Blades in West Indies’ pace attack, with Gudakesh Motie as the side’s frontline wrist-spinner.

The hosts head into the ODIs after losing the T20I series 2-1 to Pakistan in Lauderhill.

In ODI history between the two sides, West Indies hold a narrow edge, having won 71 of the 137 matches played. Pakistan have claimed 63 victories, while three games ended without a result.

Matthew Forde equals world record with joint fastest half-century in ODIs

DUBLIN: West Indies’ Matthew Forde joined former South Africa star AB de Villiers in a record-equalling feat, scoring the joint fastest half-century in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

The right-handed achieved the feat in the match against Ireland here in the second ODI. Forde smashed 16 balls 50, leveling Ab de Villiers’ record, which he set against West Indies in Johannesburg in 2015.

Matthew Forde went on to score a 19-ball 58, peppered with two fours and eight maximums.

Put into bat first, the West Indies scored 352 for the loss of eight wickets in their 50 overs, thanks to Keach Carty’s sublime century.

Carty top-scored with 102 off 109 deliveries, laced with 13 fours and a six. Meanwhile, the West Indies were in a precarious position after his dismissal.

Ireland reduced the visitors to 213-5 in 36.4 overs, but it was Matthew Forde who bludged a magnificent fifty, bringing the score to 314 in 46.5 overs.

It is pertinent to mention that Ireland is 1-0 ahead in the three-match series. The home team gave West Indies a drubbing in the first ODI, securing a comprehensive victory by 124 runs.

Andy Balbirnie was named Player of the Match for his 112 off 138 balls.

It is pertinent to mention that the West Indies will play England in a White-ball series following the conclusion of the Ireland tour.

Two uncapped players in West Indies squad to face England

Uncapped all-rounders Sherfane Rutherford and Matthew Forde were both named on Monday in the West Indies’ 15-man squad to face England in a three-match ODI series in December.

The selectors also recalled experienced wicket-keeper/batsman Shane Dowrich, who played his only ODI in 2019, and opener Kjorn Ottley, who played two ODIs in January 2021.

Shai Hope will again lead the team with Alzarri Joseph named as the new vice-captain.

However, the West Indies will be without the experience of Nicholas Pooran, who is preparing for more T20 franchise action, and Jason Holder who is prioritising Test cricket and T20.

Sherfane Rutherford, 25, from Guyana is a batting all-rounder while Matthew Forde, 21, is a fast bowling all-rounder who hails from Barbados but gains his first taste of senior international cricket after making his name with St Lucia Kings.

“Matthew Forde is a whole-hearted cricketer who has been impressive,” said lead selector Desmond Haynes.

“He is one of the players coming through the West Indies academy programme who can form part of the future.”

West Indies failed to qualify for the recent ICC World Cup 2023 in India and Haynes said that the short England series was the first step on the path to rebuilding their ODI reputation.

“England on tour of the West Indies is always filled with excitement and expectation,” he said.

“We expect this to be a hard-fought series, but we also believe this squad will do well in our home conditions.

“We have a clear vision. We are focused on building a solid team. Our main focus is to rebuild for success at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.”

The three-match series starts with two matches at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on December 3 and 6.

The tour then moves to Barbados for the third and final ODI at Kensington Oval on December 9.

West Indies Squad: Shai Hope (c), Alzarri Joseph (vc), Alick Athanaze, Yannic Cariah, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Kjorn Ottley, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Oshane Thomas.
