Bangladesh announce new vice-captains across formats

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has made a host of changes to its structural leadership across formats ahead of a packed cricketing calendar.

All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been named as the vice-captain of the Test team, whereas Test skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto is named as the former’s deputy in the ODI side.

Shanto will continue to lead the Tigers in the red ball format till the end of the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Meanwhile, opening batter Saif Hassan, who has impressed with his batting in the shorter formats, has been Litton Das’ deputy in T20Is.

The right-hander showcased his batting prowess in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2025. Overall, Saif has played 18 T20Is and has four half-centuries to his name.

“Saif Hassan has been appointed as the vice-captain of the T20 team due to his consistent and impressive performances in the shortest format for Bangladesh. Liton Das has been named captain until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026,” the Bangladesh Cricket Board said in a statement.

Litton Das took over the captaincy of the T20I side in May this year and will captain the side in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Bangladesh are currently playing against Ireland in a two-match Test series. They have already secured victory in the opening match of the series by an innings and 40 runs.

Following the Test series, the Tigers will play a three-match T20I series, which will begin on 27 November.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz gives Bangladesh selection ‘headache’ for Sri Lanka Test

Bangladesh are boosted by the return of star all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz for the second Test against Sri Lanka, but it also provides a selection dilemma for the team management.

The 26-year-old, who missed the first Test due to illness, is ranked number two among Test all-rounders.

Off-spinner Nayeem Hasan, who replaced him in the first Test in Galle that ended in a draw on Saturday, finished with a six-wicket match haul, including a five-for in the first innings.

Head coach Phil Simmons admitted the team now faces a “good headache” in balancing the playing 11.

“Mehidy Hasan Miraz is world-class, no doubt he strengthens us in both departments,” Simmons told reporters on the eve of the game in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo.

“Nayeem was outstanding in Galle. It’s tough to leave someone out after a performance like that. But everyone understands the team requirements. We’ll take a final call after training today.”

One possible workaround being floated is sacrificing a specialist batter — potentially Jaker Ali — to accommodate both spinners.

But Simmons was tight-lipped, saying the final squad would only be confirmed on match day.

Hosts Sri Lanka are grappling with a selection choice of their own, following the retirement of stalwart Angelo Mathews, who called time on his Test career after the Galle game.

Three uncapped players, Pavan Rathnayake, Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Sonal Dinusha, have been added to the squad. Selectors are likely to hand Dinusha his maiden cap.

“Sonal’s a promising left-hander who also offers us left-arm spin. Given the conditions, he fits the bill,” said skipper Dhananjaya de Silva.

Sri Lanka will also be forced to make at least one more change with seam-bowling all-rounder Milan Rathnayake out due to a side strain.

The toss-up is between an extra pacer, most likely Kasun Rajitha, back from a stint of County Cricket with Essex, or a second frontline spinner in Akila Dananjaya, who last played a Test almost six years ago.

The Singhalese Sports Club in Colombo is usually a seamer-friendly venue, but the pitch this time is expected to assist spinners as the game wears on.

Experienced all-rounder named as Bangladesh’s new ODI captain

Bangladesh has named dynamic all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz as their captain in the One Day International (ODI) format.

Mehidy will take over the reins from Najmul Hossain Shanto in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in the upcoming month.

The appointment has resulted in a split captaincy for Bangladesh in all three formats, with Liton Das as the T20I captain and Najmul Hossain Shanto as the Test skipper.

Following the announcement, Mehidy Hasan Miraz expressed gratitude for having the opportunity to lead his country.

“It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the board,” Mehidy said.

“Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer, and I am grateful for the confidence the board has shown in me. I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition and continue giving our best for the country,” he added.

The Bangladesh Cricket operations chairman, Nazmul Abedeen, shed light on the decision to name Mehidy as skipper.

“The board felt that Miraz’s consistent performances with the bat and ball, his ability to fight and inspire the team and his energetic presence on and off the field make him an ideal candidate to lead the ODI side during a transitional time,” Nazmul Abedeen said.

He further said, “We believe he has the temperament and maturity to take Bangladesh forward in this format.”

It is pertinent to mention that Mehidy had led Bangladesh in four ODIs last year, during Shanto’s absence due to injury. His first stint was against Afghanistan, followed by a series against the West Indies. However, Bangladesh lost all four games.

Apart from ODIs, Mehidy also stood in as Test captain in the series against West Indies, helping Bangladesh draw the second Test in Jamaica after losing the first Test.

The all-rounder has played 105 ODIs and is the fourth Bangladesh player to do the double of 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in the format.

Bangladesh opener ruled out of T20I series against Pakistan, replacement named

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday named Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the replacement of all-rounder Soumya Sarkar in their squad ahead of the T20I series against Pakistan.

Soumya Sarkar has been experiencing pain on the right side of his lower back for the past week. Although he was included in the squad, he did not play in the T20I series against the United Arab Emirates, which Bangladesh lost 2-1.

Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan shed light on the injury of Soumya Sarkar, mentioning that he requires two weeks to get fit.

“Following medical evaluation, it has been determined that the injury requires an extended rehabilitation period of approximately 10 to 12 days. This effectively means he will not be available for next week’s three-match series in Pakistan,” Bayjedul said.

Following the injury confirmation of Soumya Sarkar, BCB named all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz as a replacement, currently featuring in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 for Lahore Qalandars.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who is not part of Bangladesh’s ongoing T20I series against the UAE in Sharjah or the upcoming five-match T20I series in Pakistan, sees this PSL opportunity as a chance to prove his T20 credentials and push for a national recall.

“Of course, it is exciting for me to join Lahore Qalandars,” Mehidy said in a recent interview.

“It is technically the second time I have got a call-up to a franchise league.

“Nonetheless, it is a good opportunity for me to compete at a very high level. PSL is one of the top tournaments going around. I have done well in the past in the BPL, so I am confident that I can give my best.”

“Definitely, I want to get back into the Bangladesh [T20I] team, and this is one of the ways I can improve myself in the format.”

At Lahore Qalandars, Miraz is set to reunite with senior Bangladesh teammate Shakib Al Hasan, who recently joined the franchise alongside Sri Lanka’s Bhanuka Rajapaksa to bolster a squad depleted by the absence of David Wiese and Sam Billings.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz named ICC men’s Player of the Month for April 2025

Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for April 2025, following his stellar all-round performance in the recently concluded Test series against Zimbabwe.

Mehidy edged out Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani and New Zealand pacer Ben Sears to claim the honour, his first-ever ICC Player of the Month title.

With this, he becomes only the third Bangladeshi cricketer to win the award, after Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan.

Reacting to the news, Mehidy said the award holds special significance for him and reflects the journey he has had so far.

“Moments like these remind me of my journey — being named Player of the Tournament in the 2016 ICC U19 World Cup was a massive encouragement early in my career, and this award feels just as special,” he said.

The 27-year-old dedicated the award to his teammates, coaches, and fans, calling it a motivation to keep performing for Bangladesh at the highest level.

“The ICC Awards are the ultimate recognition for any cricketer, and to receive this from a global vote means a lot to me… This award belongs to everyone who’s supported me,” he added.

As for the performance that earned him the title, it was nothing short of phenomenal.

In the two-match Test series, Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 116 runs at an average of 38.66 and picked up 15 wickets at a staggering average of 11.86.

In the first Test in Sylhet, he was Bangladesh’s standout performer with back-to-back five-wicket hauls, 5 for 52 and 5 for 50, but despite his heroics, Zimbabwe clinched a dramatic three-wicket win.

But Mehidy bounced back in the second Test in Chattogram, delivering a complete performance.

After dismantling Zimbabwe in the first innings, he played a match-defining knock of 104 off 162 balls, his third Test century, before wrapping up the game with another five-for (5 for 32) to hand Bangladesh an innings-and-106-run win, levelling the series 1-1.

ICC unveils nominees for Player of the Month awards for April 2025

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday revealed the nominees for the Men’s Player of the Month for April 2025, featuring Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz alongside Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani and New Zealand’s Ben Sears.

Bangladesh’s dynamic all-rounder Mehidy earned the nomination for his outstanding performance in the Test series against Zimbabwe.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz stood for his team in difficult times with the bat and ball. He took consecutive five-wicket hauls in the first Test. However, his contribution could not save his team from defeat.

In the second Test, Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s excellent all-round performance helped his team level the series. He scored a century in the first innings and a five-wicket haul in Zimbabwe’s second innings to set up a victory for his team.

Meanwhile, the second nominee for ICC Player of the Month is fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani. Heho was pivotal for Zimbabwe in the series against Bangladesh.

He took nine wickets in the match, which earned him the Player of the Match award. He recorded 3-50 and 6-72 figures in the first and second innings, respectively.

Blessing Muzarabani finished as Zimbabwe’s top taker in the series, claiming 10 wickets across two Tests at an impressive average of 20.50.

New Zealand’s fast bowler Ben Sears earned the nomination for excellent performances in the ODI series against Pakistan.

He picked up back-to-back five-fors against Pakistan in the last two ODIs, tormenting the Men in Green’s top-order.

Ben Sears was instrumental in the team’s whitewash, taking 5 wickets for 59 runs in the second ODI, which helped New Zealand secure an 84-run victory.

In the last ODI of the series, Sears again produced a sensational bowling spell, taking 5 for 34 in his nine overs.

Ben Sears’ outstanding bowling performances earned him the Player of the Series award as he bagged 10 wickets at an average of 9.30 at an economy rate of 5.07

Zimbabwe edge ahead in first Test despite Mehidy’s five-wicket haul

Spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed five wickets as Bangladesh managed to restrict Zimbabwe to 273 on Monday for a modest 82-run lead on the second day of the first Test.

Zimbabwe finished the first day in Sylhet in a commanding position after bowling out the hosts for 191 and then racing to 67 without loss.

However, opener Ben Curran fell on 18 to Nahid Rana at the start of the second day, and his partner Brian Bennett, who hit an aggressive 64-ball 57, was removed soon after with the score on 88-2.

Sean Williams (59) was the only other Zimbabwe batter to reach fifty. Wessly Madhevere (24), Nyasha Mayavo (35), and Richard Ngarava (28) all failed to build bigger scores.

Off-spinner Mehidy took the key wickets of Williams, Mayavo, and Ngarava to finish with 5-52 on a wicket that was expected to help the pace bowlers.

Nahid took 3-74 with aggressive bowling in support of Mehidy.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss on the first day and opted to bat first, but his batters were unable to capitalise.

Shanto must now hope that they can make the most of the friendly home conditions to set a formidable target for the visitors.

Bangladesh have won eight of the 18 Tests against Zimbabwe, their highest total against any Test side, with four of them in their past five encounters.

The second and final Test of the series will be played in Chattogram from April 28.
