Stallions skipper Haris picks strongest opposition in Champions Cup

Wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Haris, who will lead the Stallions in the upcoming Champions One-Day Cup, has picked the strongest opposition in the tournament.

During his appearance on the ARY News show “Sports Room,” the right-handed batter said that Mohammad Rizwan-led Markhors (previously Wolves) would be the strongest opposition to face in the Champions Cup.

“Our side will be the strongest in the tournament, but the strongest opposition would be Mohammad Rizwan’s team. We will enjoy playing against them,” he said.

Responding to a question, the wicketkeeping batter expressed hope that the Champions One-Day Cup would become a game-changing tournament for Pakistan cricket.

“In terms of quality, all the international players are available in the tournament. When I bat in domestic cricket, I do not get international-level bowlers. However, all those bowlers will be available in this tournament which is a good thing,” he said.

According to Mohammad Haris, the upcoming tournament provided a good opportunity for players to perform and make their way to the national squad.

In this regard, he said that he and his team mentors have decided to give more chances to youngsters and back them throughout the tournament.

“Other teams would also want to do the same to allow youngsters to show their skills and to learn from the international stars,” he added.

The Stallions skipper revealed that he is eyeing a comeback to the Pakistan national squad with his performance in the Champions Cup.

“Being a wicketkeeper, batter and captain, my goal is to perform and make a comeback to the team. This tournament is very important to me and I will try to play in the position that is required in the Pakistan team,” he said.

On the importance of mentors, he said that team players were very happy with the decision as they will have a lot to learn from the senior players.

“All the players welcome having such mentors who are very helpful to them. They do not hesitate to talk to mentors due to their easy-going nature,” Mohammad Haris added.

The five-team tournament will commence on 12 September (today) with Markhors facing Shadab Khan-led Panthers in the opening match. Meanwhile the final is scheduled to be played on 29 September.

The Champions One-Day Cup will feature the country’s top cricketers. This 50-over tournament will be played in a single-league format, where five teams will be mentored by stalwarts such as Misbah-ul-Haq (Markhors), Saqlain Mushtaq (Panthers), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Dolphins), Shoaib Malik (Stallions) and Waqar Younis (Lions).

Babar Azam reveals reason behind dropping Aamir Jamal, Mohammad Haris

LAHORE: Pakistan’s white-ball captain Babar Azam on Monday revealed the reason for the exclusion of all-rounder Aamir Jamal and wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Haris from the national squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and England.

During the team’s pre-departure press conference, Azam clarified the reasons for excluding Jamal and Haris from the upcoming series, leading to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

“I agree that Haris didn’t get many opportunities after the T20 World Cup [in 2022]. However, he got the chance during [Pakistan Super League] PSL 9 but unfortunately, he wasn’t able to perform there,” Babar Azam stated.

He further shed light on the fact that Haris is a top-order player, and the Pakistan team has a settled top-order, which is also a reason for Haris’ exclusion.

“Haris plays in the top order which already includes me, [Mohammad] Rizwan, Saim [Ayub] and Fakhar [Zaman] which is why there were limited opportunities for him” he added.

The star-batter also acknowledged Aamir Jamal’s talent as an all-rounder but clarified that his best performances came in Test cricket and a player cannot be selected for T20I based on Test performance.

“Aamir Jamal performed in Test cricket and Test performance cannot be compared with T20s. He is a fine all-rounder. He needs some more time and more matches under his belt which will get him further polished for T20 cricket,” he concluded.

It is worth mentioning here that the Pakistan men’s cricket team is currently participating in a three-day training session here ahead of their three-match T20I series against Ireland.

The team is scheduled to depart for Dublin on 7 May, where they will play three T20Is at Clontarf on 10, 12, and 14 May 2024. All three matches will start at 3 PM local time.

The three-match away series, followed by four T20Is in England, will serve as a stepping stone for the Green Shirts to boast their preparations for this year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA).

Ahmed Shehzad levels serious allegations on Mohammad Haris

LAHORE: Test cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has levelled serious allegations against wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris for getting selected for the national side.

Speaking to a private news channel, Ahmed Shehzad accused Mohammad Haris of ‘running’ a campaign to get his place back in the national side.

“Muhammad Haris hired a PR Team that ran a campaign on social media and demanded his inclusion in the national side,” Ahmed Shehzad added.

He said that Haris has not performed well in domestic cricket and has only scored a ‘few’ runs in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine.

“Mohammad Haris scored just one fifty in the PSL 9,” Ahmed Shehzad added and asked why Haris should be selected for the team despite his ‘poor’ performance.

He also criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for ‘ignoring’ deserving players who have been performing well in domestic cricket for the past 10 years.

“What should the players, who don’t have money to run a campaign, do?” he asked.

It is pertinent to mention here that Mohammad Haris was not included in the squad announced for the upcoming series against Ireland and England.

Haris takes responsibility for Afghanistan series loss

SHARJAH: Young opening batter Mohammad Haris has taken the responsibility for Pakistan’s dismal performance in the recently-concluded T20I series against Afghanistan.

Haris, who scored just 22 runs in three innings, apologized to the cricket fans of the country for his consistent failures with the bat during the series.

“Dear my nation. Not the result we wanted. I am responsible as I did not provide a good start for my team.” he maintained in a Twitter post on Tuesday.

“Really sorry but we will learn from this experience and come back stronger In ShAA Allah,” he added.

It may be noted here that Afghanistan beat Pakistan 2-1 in the maiden bilateral series between the two sides. Although the Green Shirts bounced back in the final T20I to achieve a consolation win, the inexperienced batting lineup underwent batting collapses which led to forgettable results in the first two matches.
