Babar Azam goes extra mile to reclaim his form ahead of semi-final

SYDNEY: Pakistan captain Babar Azam participated in the optional training session ahead of his team’s scheduled semi-final clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 against New Zealand.

According to the details, the rest of the national team preferred to rest before the all-important semi-final against New Zealand, scheduled for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Babar, who is going through a rough patch, practised alone in the nets to regain his form.

The right-handed batter trained for a gruelling one and a half hours, while team mentor Matthew Hayden accompanied him.

It is pertinent to mention that Babar could manage to score 39 runs in five innings at a dismal average of 7.8 and a strike rate of 48.03.

Openers, bowlers power Blackcaps to outclass Pakistan in Tri-series match

CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand spinners stormed through the Pakistan batting line before openers Fin Allen and Devon Conway pounded the bowlers to clinch a comprehensive nine-wicket win for the Blackcaps in the ongoing tri-series, here on Tuesday.

With the dominating win, Kiwis avenged the earlier defeat by six wickets in their first encounter against Pakistan on Saturday.

Set to chase a paltry 131, Allen smashed half a dozen sixes during his blistering knock of 65 off 42 while Conway contributed with an unbeaten 49 off 46, propelling their side to achieve the target with 23 balls to spare.

The pair raised a phenomenal opening partnership of 117 runs before Shadab Khan struck with the lone wicket for the bowling side as he stumped out Allen.

Earlier, Pakistan went through a dismal day with the bat and failed to hit a single six during the whole innings after they opted to bat first.

Michael Bracewell and Mitchel Santner dismissed two wickets each while Ish Sodhi struck one to jitter the Green Shirts’ batting line before Iftikhar Ahmed and Asif Ali put up a slight resistance as they built a 51-run partnership for the seventh wicket.

The steady partnership between the two was only broken in the last over by veteran pacer Tim Southee who bowled an impressive final over, striking two wickets and conceding just two runs, to restrict Pakistan to 130/7 in the allotted 20 overs.

Iftikhar top-scored for Pakistan with 27 off 27 balls while Asif scored an unbeaten 25 off 20.

On the other hand, Mohammad Rizwan (16), Shan Masood (14), Babar Azam (21), Shadab Khan (8) and Haider Ali (8) failed to impress.

Bracewell had the first breakthrough for New Zealand when he dismissed Rizwan in the 5th over after he faced 17 balls.

Santner joined the attack and ceased Shan Masood’s brief stay on the crease in the 8th over to set off the alarm bells for Pakistan.

No.4 batter Shadab fell cheaply by the left-arm spinner before the skipper Babar, who was looking in fine touch, was sent back to the pavilion by Bracewell in the 11th over.

Blackcaps forced Pakistan to be on the back foot throughout the game as they were reduced to 77/5 in the 14th over when Ish Sodhi dismissed Haider cheaply on 8.

New Zealand will now lock horns against Bangladesh on Wednesday (Tomorrow) while Pakistan faces the latter on Thursday in their final encounter before the final on Friday between the top two teams.

‘Can give short-term success,’ Hafeez on Shadab’s promotion to No.4

KARACHI: Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez remained unpleased with the shuffling in the national team’s middle order during the second fixture of the ongoing T20 Tri-series in New Zealand and claimed that the move can give short-term success only.

In the recently-concluded second match of the ongoing Tri-nation T20 series in New Zealand, Pakistan comfortably outclassed the hosts by six wickets to secure the top berth in the standings.

Pakistan’s T20I vice-captain Shadab Khan, who was promoted to bat at No.4, played a crucial knock of 34 runs in the run chase and bolstered the green shirts to chase the 148-run target with 10 balls to spare.

Former Pakistan captain Hafeez, however, seemed unpleased by the tactics and claimed that it can only benefit the national team for short-term success.

“Promotion of [Shadab Khan] at no 4 & M[ohammad Nawaz] at no 5 can give short-term success but [will] put more pressure & doubts in the minds of middle order batters,” Hafeez tweeted.

“Why they [are] there for??? If no confidence in them then why they are with the team?? Middle order [will] remain an issue,” Hafeez questioned.

Cricket fans, on the other hand, had an otherwise opinion as they claimed that Shadab batting at No.4 can fix Pakistan’s struggling middle-order woes.

“Facing Middle Order problems ?? One Solution: SHADAB KHAN At No.4,” A cricket fan wrote.

Another cricket fan supported Shadab’s promotion in the batting order and also stated that Haider Ali and Asif Ali can be used as finishers.

“I think this batting order is suitable with Shadab coming at the top and we can use Haider’s power-hitting skills and Asif ali as finishers,” he tweeted.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan will come face to face with New Zealand again in their next T20 Tri-series fixture, a win over the hosts can take them to the final.

Babar leads Pakistan to thrash New Zealand in T20 Tri-series

CHRISTCHURCH: Pakistan captain Babar Azam led the way with a magnificent knock of 79* in the run chase and powered his side to a dominating six-wicket win over New Zealand in the second match of the ongoing Tri-nation series.

Set to chase 147, Pakistan comfortably steered to victory in the 19th over with six wickets to spare, thanks to a terrific match-winning from their captain Babar.

The touring side had an unwanted start to their run chase as they lost their key batter Mohammad Rizwan early, who could manage to score four off 12 deliveries.

Left-handed batter Shan Masood failed to contribute in the run chase as he bagged a two-ball duck and Pakistan, as a result, slipped to 37/2 in the sixth over.

Following the slump, Babar then joined hands with Shadab, who was promoted to bat at No.4, and set the tone for the run chase as the pair added crucial 61 runs for the third wicket.

Babar played an anchoring role in the partnership and soon brought up his half-century, while Shadab was accelerating the proceedings with a quickfire cameo.

Blair Tickner, however, halted Shadab’s heroics in the 13th over and provided his side with a much-needed breakthrough. He scored 34 off just 22, laced with two boundaries and as many sixes.

Mohammad Nawaz (19) then added vital runs for their team and put on a brief partnership with Babar and put Pakistan on the verge of a second victory in the ongoing tri-series.

Babar top-scored for his side with a brilliant knock of 79 not out off just 53 deliveries and smashed 11 boundaries. His sensible knock earned him the player of the match award.

Haider, on the other hand, scored 10 off just two deliveries, courtesy of a six and a boundary.

Tickner led the bowling attack for New Zealand as he bagged two wickets but was expensive, while Tim Southee and Trent Boult struck out a batter apiece.

Batting first after winning the toss, New Zealand were off to a poor start as the side lost their opener Finn Allen (13) at a combined score of 16 in the third over.

Devon Conway then joined hands with skipper Kane Williamson and anchored the innings with a gritty 61-run partnership for the second wicket.

Williamson and Conway remained too slow amid their second wicket as they conceded 52 balls in the proceeding.

Conway, while attempting to accelerate his knock, fell victim to Mohammad Nawaz in the 11th over. The left-handed batter top-scored for the side with 36 off 35 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and as many sixes.

The left-arm spinner then castled Williamson in his next over and caused New Zealand to slip to 88/3 in 13 overs. He scored 31 off 30 including a boundary.

Following the slump, Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman stood up for their team and added 42 runs at a quick pace and powered the home side to a commendable total before Shahnawaz Dahani struck in the 18th over to remove Phillips for 18.

The hosts then began to lose wickets at an alarming rate, courtesy of a brilliant 19th over from Haris, who bagged three wickets including that of Chapman, who scored a quickfire 32. His 16-ball knock included three boundaries and two sixes.

Besides Haris, Mohammad Nawaz and Mohammad Wasim Jr bagged two wickets each, while Dahani made one scalp.

New Zealand delegation to visit National Stadium for security review

KARACHI: The security delegation of New Zealand Cricket (NZC) will visit the National Stadium on Saturday to assess the security arrangements in the country ahead of their limited-overs tour of Pakistan later this year.

According to the details, the security delegations will also hold a security briefing meeting with the law-enforcement agencies at SSU Headquarters here.

During their visit to the stadium, the delegation comprising experts assess the security arrangements before passing on their recommendations to NZC.

The final decision regarding the tour will then be taken in accordance with the clearance from the security delegation.

It is pertinent to mention here that New Zealand will tour Pakistan in September and October to play a three-match ODI series and T20I series.

Whereas, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also offered the NZC to play two additional T20Is in a bid to prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, scheduled in October.

It is worth mentioning here that the NZC called off their Pakistan tour in the eleventh hour last year in September, citing security concerns.

NZC pays compensation to PCB for abruptly ending last year’s tour

KARACHI: The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has paid the compensation amount to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for abruptly pulling out of the tour at the eleventh hour last year.

The amount of the compensation has not been revealed yet but as per the sources the PCB will make a handsome revenue from the New Zealand’s upcoming tour to the country.

The NZC has reportedly paid the compensation for the financial loss suffered by the PCB including hotel rents, security, marketing, broadcasting, and more.

Following this development, the working relationships between the cricket boards are likely to restore back to normal while New Zealand’s invitation to Pakistan to play a tri-nation series can be considered another.

Pakistan, on the other hand, will likely respond to the invitation after finalising the schedule of the England’s tour to the country in October.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Blackcaps pulled out of their scheduled Pakistan tour minutes before the commencement of the first ODI in Rawalpindi on September 17, 2021, and opted to return home, citing security concerns.

The cancellation also resulted in England withdrawing from their tour to Pakistan, which was scheduled a month later than that of New Zealand.

Following this challenging phase for the Pakistan Cricket, the chairman of PCB Ramiz Raja announced to address NZC at the International Cricket Council (ICC) and to ask the NZC pay the compensation.
