Kusal Mendis out of third ODI against New Zealand

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced on Monday that in-form batter Kusal Mendis and three others have been given a break from the upcoming third ODI against New Zealand.

Sri Lanka, with an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, are eyeing a clean sweep over Sri Lanka in the final match, scheduled in Pallekele on Tuesday.

Kusal Mendis, a wicketkeeper-batter, has played a starring role with scores of 143 and an unbeaten 74 in the two previous rain-shortened matches.

Moreover, Kamindu Mendis, Asitha Fernando, and Pathum Nissanka have also been released from the squad.

“The decision was taken by the selectors to give the above players adequate time to recover and prepare for the upcoming Test series in South Africa,” Sri Lanka Cricket said in a release.

The two-match Test series between South Africa and Sri Lanka is set to commence on 27 November, with the first match scheduled in Durban.

Following the first Test, the teams will head to Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth, for the second and final match of the series.

Meanwhile, top-order batters Nuwanidu Fernando and Lahiru Udara along with fast bowler Eshan Malinga have been called up in the Sri Lanka squad as cover for the rested players.

Tim Southee announced retirement from Test cricket

Former New Zealand captain Tim Southee on Friday announced that he will retire from Test cricket after the upcoming Test series against England, with the 35-year-old set to finish up at his home ground in Hamilton.

The irrepressible seam bowler made his debut against England at Napier in 2008 and has been a mainstay of New Zealand Test side since then.

Southee has taken 385 wickets in 104 Tests during his 16-year-long career. He is the second-highest wicket-taker for New Zealand in Test cricket with Richard Hadlee standing at the top with 431 wickets.

“Representing New Zealand was all I ever dreamed of growing up,” Tim Southee said in his retirement announcement.

“To play for the Black Caps for 18 years has been the greatest honour and privilege, but the time feels right to now step away from the game that has given so much to me.

“Test cricket holds a special place in my heart, so to be able to play such a big series against the same opponent my Test career began against all those years ago, and on three grounds that are incredibly special to me, seems the perfect way to end my time in the Black Cap.

“I’ll always be so grateful to my family, friends, coaches, our fans and everyone involved in the game who has supported me and my career over the years.

“It’s been an amazing ride and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Tim Southee captained the side to six wins, six losses and two draws after taking over from Kane Williamson in 2022 before handing over the baton last month to Tom Latham, who led them to a 3-0 Test sweep in India.

Southee’s all-round skills and consistency have seen him become the only player in the world to claim more than 300 Test wickets, 200 ODI wickets and 100 T20 wickets.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive Scott Weenink saluted him as one of the country’s finest players.

“Tim [Southee] has been a constant in the improving fortunes of the Blackcaps and he’ll be remembered as a giant of the modern New Zealand game,” he said.

“Tim has an incredible bank of experience and knowledge of the game and while he may have called time on his playing career, I’d be surprised if we don’t see him in another capacity at some stage in the future.”

Tim Southee is yet to make a decision about his white-ball retirement. He will decide after the three-Test England series, which gets underway in Christchurch on November 28, whether he has one final white-ball farewell in him.

New Zealand face Sri Lanka in three ODIs and three T20s at home from December 28.

Blackcaps coach Gary Stead said Southee’s record spoke for itself.

“Tim’s durability and resilience has been outstanding,” he said. “He’s an incredibly tough competitor who gets himself up for big occasions and is rarely injured.”

“Tim cares deeply about the team, its reputation and performances, and he will be missed within the Blackcaps environment.

“He now deserves some time with his family and I’m sure he will reflect very positively in years to come about his impact and achievements in the game.”

Kane Williamson returns to New Zealand squad for England Test series

Prolific New Zealand batter Kane Williamson has been included in the Test squad to face England after missing their recent 3-0 sweep in India with a groin injury.

The former skipper will once again team up with veteran seamer Tim Southee, who will retire from Test cricket after the three series starting in Christchurch on November 28.

Williamson has scored 8881 runs from 102 matches, the most by any batter from New Zealand, at an average of 54.48.

The Black Caps called up bowling all-rounder Nathan Smith for the first time while uncapped quick Jacob Duffy was also included in the squad.

But Ajaz Patel, who claimed 15 wickets against India, was surprisingly overlooked with Mitchell Santner the spin option, backed up by Glenn Phillips.

Meanwhile, Ben Sears and Kyle Jamieson were not considered owing to their knee and back injuries respectively.

“It’s obviously a big series for the side in terms of the World Test Championship [WTC] and to also now be farewelling someone like Tim Southee only raises it up further,” said Black Caps selector Sam Wells.

The triumph in India propelled New Zealand back into contention for next year’s World Test Championship final, but even a whitewash of England would not guarantee it.

Ben Stokes’ England suffered a 2-1 defeat in Pakistan last month.

“It’s also an exciting time for Nathan to be brought into the Test squad for the first time,” added Wells.

“Nathan is an exciting talent with a proven first-class record and I’m sure he will bring a lot of skill and energy to the group.”

Wells admitted it was tough to leave out Patel, but the decision was made given the expected home conditions and Santner’s recent Test form.

The Black Caps are again led by Tom Latham, who took over from Southee last month and led them to what he called one of New Zealand’s “greatest series wins” in India.

Following the Christchurch Test, the series moves to Wellington and then Hamilton for Southee’s last hurrah.

Kusal Mendis, Avishka Fernando help Sri Lanka beat New Zealand in first ODI

Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando both slammed centuries to set up a convincing 45-run victory for Sri Lanka in the rain-interrupted first ODI against New Zealand on Wednesday.

Kusal, 29, struck a career-best 143 and Avishka hit 100 as Sri Lanka posted a commanding 324-5 in 49.2 overs before rain stopped play.

New Zealand, chasing a revised target of 221 off 27 overs, were restricted to 175-9 in the day-night game played at Dambulla.

The Kiwis started off confidently but then lost five wickets in less than five overs for the addition of just 22 runs.

It was Maheesh Theekshana who triggered the collapse with the wickets of openers Will Young and Tim Robinson, who shared an 88-run stand in just 79 balls.

Robinson fell to a sharp stumping by Kusal, and four balls later, Theekshana bowled Young to swing the momentum towards Sri Lanka.

From there on, it was downhill all the way for the visitors as the rest of the batsmen failed to live up to the task.

“When you lose two set guys, it can be difficult on these wickets,” said Kiwi skipper Mitchell Santner. “We tried to keep firing shots, but if you lose wickets in clumps, it’s a challenge.”

Earlier, Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando stitched together a 206-run partnership from 215 balls for the highest second-wicket partnership in ODIs for Sri Lanka against New Zealand.

Their effort eclipsed a 21-year-old record held by Sanath Jayasuriya and Hashan Tillakaratne, who added 170 against the Black Caps in the 2003 World Cup in Bloemfontein.

The stand was also the highest partnership for any wicket at Dambulla in ODIs.

“I thought it would be tough for us (with the wet ball) and it also didn’t turn too much,” said Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka. “Avishka [Fernando] and Kusal [Mendis] batted really well and the best thing was that both of them scored hundreds.”

For Avishka, it was his first century since 2021, breaking a dry spell after a string of low scores.

Avishka’s 115-ball knock, including nine fours and two sixes, came to an end when he was caught while attempting a sweep shot off Ish Sodhi. It was his fourth ODI hundred.

Kusal’s century was also his fourth in ODIs and first this year. His knock was the highest individual score at Dambulla, surpassing India’s Shikhar Dhawan’s 132 in 2017.

A cameo 40-run knock by Asalanka off just 28 balls capped a fine day with the bat for the islanders.

It was New Zealand paceman Jacob Duffy who dismissed Kusal, caught at extra cover by Henry Nicholls. Kusal’s brisk 128-ball knock was studded with 17 fours and two sixes.

Sri Lanka’s batters seized control after Asalanka won the toss and opted to bat first.

Opener Pathum Nissanka was dismissed early for 12, but Kusal and Avishka made the most of the conditions.

The New Zealand spinners struggled to rein in the Sri Lankan batsmen, who kept the scoreboard ticking at over 6.5 runs per over.

Rain halted play just one ball into Sri Lanka’s innings, causing a 39-minute delay. Downpours returned with four balls left in the Sri Lankan innings.

The ODI action will next move to Pallekele where the remaining two games of the series will be played on Sunday and Tuesday.

New Zealand suffer major blow ahead of Sri Lanka ODIs

New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out of the ODI series against Sri Lanka with a leg injury, days after taking a hat-trick against the same opposition.

Ferguson went off for treatment straight after becoming the sixth New Zealander to take a T20I hat-trick during his second over in Sunday’s series-levelling win in Dambulla.

Seamer Adam Milne replaces the 33-year-old white-ball specialist and will join the squad in Dambulla ahead of Wednesday’s first ODI of a three-match series.

“We’re gutted for Lockie [Ferguson],” said New Zealand coach Gary Stead. “He showed in the space of just two overs what an asset he is with the ball and he’s also brought a lot of leadership to this group.”

“He’ll be a big miss heading into an important ODI series for us. We’re hopeful his recovery will be short and he’ll be back out on the field in no time.

“Adam [Milne] is a like-for-like replacement who brings genuine pace and plenty of international experience, so we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the group.”

The second and third ODIs between Sri Lanka and New Zealand will be played in Pallekele on November 17 and 19.

The first ODI will also be played at Dambulla, on November 13, with the next two shifting to Pallekele on November 17 and 19.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli under fire after India’s whitewash against New Zealand

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma came under fire Monday as India chewed over a 3-0 Test series home defeat to New Zealand, with critics calling the team ageing and low on confidence.

The cricket superpower went down by 25 runs on Sunday in the third Test inside three days at Mumbai for only their second series whitewash at home. It sealed New Zealand’s historic first-ever Test series triumph on Indian soil.

For India there is little time to fix things — they travel to Australia for a five-match Test series starting on November 22.

“Losing 3-0 at home is a tough pill to swallow and it calls for introspection,” former skipper Sachin Tendulkar wrote on social media.

“Was it lack of preparation, was it poor shot selection or was it lack of match practice?”

India went into the series against the Black Caps second in the ICC Test rankings, behind Australia, and as clear favourites.

But repeated batting collapses — they were 46 all out in their first innings in the opening Test — set alarm bells ringing. It hardly got much better from there.

“I accept the fact that we were not good enough with the bat in the entire series,” said skipper Rohit Sharma.

It particularly showed the Indian batsmen’s surprising inability to handle spinners on turning pitches in their own backyard.

Mitchell Santner took 13 wickets in the second match while Mumbai-born New Zealander Ajaz Patel took 11 in the third Test to condemn India.

With Australia looming large, the form of 37-year-old Rohit and superstar batsman Kohli, 35, is of particular concern to Indian cricket fans. Rohit made 91 runs in three matches. Kohli is just 93.

“The cold fact is that this is now a team in transition with key figures ageing, out of form and low on confidence,” the Times of India newspaper wrote.

“Two of their stalwarts, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, seem to be in a state of terminal batting decline with a strange reluctance to acknowledge it and take corrective action like polishing their game by playing in domestic cricket,” it added.

Indian media reported that all senior players, including Rohit and Kohli, had been advised to play the domestic Duleep Trophy four-day matches, but the players refused due to a “lack of motivation”.

“They should have had some practice, definitely,” former India captain Sunil Gavaskar told the Indian Express.

“I know we beat Bangladesh and therefore it looked as if it was going to be a cakewalk against New Zealand,” Gavaskar added.

“But New Zealand, obviously, had a better attack, with cricketers who have played in India and in the IPL, who have a sense of what Indian pitches do.”

Rohit and Kohli retired from T20 cricket after the team’s World Cup triumph in June.

Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, 38, and Ravindra Jadeja, 35, also suddenly look like age is catching up with them, critics said.

Pakistan can beat India in Test: Wasim Akram after New Zealand’s 3-0 win

Legendary pacer Wasim Akram made a bold prediction on Monday that Pakistan could defeat India in a Test match after the latter’s clean sweep defeat at home against New Zealand.

The Kiwis became the first team to clean-sweep India at home in a three-match Test series after they defeated the hosts in the third Test at Mumbai on Sunday.

India struggled against New Zealand spinners during the Test series with Ajaz Patel taking 15 wickets in three matches and Mitchell Santner taking 13 wickets in the only match he played.

After the historic loss, Wasim Akram talked about the possibility of a Test match between long-standing rivals Pakistan and India while commentating on the ongoing first ODI between Pakistan and Australia in Melbourne.

During the conversation with fellow commentator Michael Vaughan, Akram predicted that Pakistan would have the upper hand on spin-friendly pitches.

“I would want to see a Test series between India and Pakistan,” remarked Vaughan

“It will be massive. It will be good for the game, for two cricket-crazy nations.” Akram replied.

“Pakistan have a chance to beat India in Tests now on a spinning track. They have been hammered by New Zealand 3-0 at home.”

Akram’s confidence in Pakistan is backed by their recent 2-1 series victory against England in the home Test series.

Pakistan were in heaps of trouble after succumbing to an innings and 47 runs defeat in the opening Test of the series.

The under-fire hosts needed a miracle to fight for the series glory and they made four massive changes to their squad for the remaining two Tests, which marked the ouster of big names like Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah.

Consistent domestic performer Kamran Ghulam replaced Babar, while the dynamic spin duo of Sajid Khan and Noman Ali came in as Shaheen and Naseem’s replacement.

The spin duo dismantled England in the remaining two Tests and picked up 39 out of their 40 wickets, while another late entrant Zahid Mahmood bagged the solitary wicket.

The mid-series additions Sajid Khan and Noman Ali played a pivotal role in marking an astounding turnaround for Pakistan, who recovered from 0-1 down to beat England 2-1 and seal their first Test series victory at home since 2021.

Kane Williamson ruled out of second India Test

Prolific New Zealand batter Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the second Test against India, which begins in Pune on October 24, as he continues to recover from a groin strain.

The former captain was included in the tour squad, but delayed his departure and missed the first Test in Bengaluru, which New Zealand won by eight wickets.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said in a statement that Williamson was making progress, but was still not ready.

“We’re monitoring Kane and he’s tracking in the right direction but isn’t yet 100% fit,” he said.

“We’re hopeful to see further improvement over the coming days and have him available for the third Test.”

“We’ll give him as much time as possible to get himself ready, but certainly continue to take a cautious approach.”

Williamson, who is New Zealand’s greatest Test run-scorer, experienced groin discomfort during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle last month.
