Pakistan Cup: Table-toppers KPK, Balochistan secure fourth-round triumphs

KARACHI: In the ongoing Pakistan Cup, the table-toppers Kyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Balochistan secured fourth-round victories over Sindh and Central Punjab (CP) respectively, while Southern Punjab (SP) edged past Northern, on Tuesday.

In the 12th match of the ongoing domestic event, KPK have strengthened their top position with a thumping victory of 113 runs over Sindh.

Batting first, the defending champions managed to score 220 before being bowled out in the last over.

Ahmed Khan and Sameen Gul provided a gritty 70-runs partnership for the ninth wicket to anchor the innings when the side was stranded at 121-8. Ahmed scored 44, while Sameen top-scored with his 46. Young wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Haris, on the other hand, scored an important 33 off 35 balls, up the order.

For Sindh, Danish Aziz led the way with three wickets, while Abrar Ahmed and Sohail Khan bagged two each. Mir Hamza and Anwar Ali, on the other hand, managed to make one scalp.

Set to chase 221, Sindh’s batting line-up failed and was bowled out for a mere 107; handing a thumping 113-runs victory to KPK.

The right-handed opening batter Khurram Manzoor resisted a bit with his gritty 26, while the rest of the batters walked back to the pavilion after scoring cheaply.

For KPK, Khalid Usman starred; taking a five-fer, while Arshad Iqbal and Sameen claimed two wickets each. Asif Afridi, on the other hand, struck out a batter.

In the 10th match of the Pakistan Cup, the second-ranked Balochistan sealed a crushing eight-wicket victory over CP, thanks to the unbeaten century from Imran Butt.

Set to chase a skimpy 180, Imran’s brilliance drove the side to the victory in the 37th over. The right-handed batter scored an unbeaten 100 off 168 balls, laced with eight boundaries, while Haseebullah and Abdul Wahid Bangalzai also chipped in with 32 each.

For CP, Qasim Akram and Raza Ali Dar managed to pick one wicket apiece.

Batting first, CP batters failed to bolster their side at a commendable position as the side could only score 179 before being bowled out in the 28th over.

For CP, Qasim and Raza showed resistance with the bat also as Raza scored a valiant 39, while Qasim top-scored with an astonishing 63. The rest of the batters, on the other hand, remained clueless in front of Balochistan’s bowling attack.

For Balochistan, Yashir Shah and Akif Javed took three wickets each, while Khurram Shahzad picked two. Amad Butt, on the other hand, claimed one wicket.

In another match of the ongoing domestic event, SP edged past Northern by 67 runs to secure their first victory of the tournament.

Batting first, Salman Ali Agha’s power-show with the bat powered the side to a commendable total of 284 before bowling out in the 49th over.

Salman scored a terrific 171 off 204 balls, laced with 18 boundaries and six maximums, while the rest of the batters could not contribute significantly.

For Northern, Aamir Jamal took three wickets, while Athar Mehmood, Mubasir Khan, and Musa Khan picked two wickets each. Imad Wasim, on the other hand, claimed one wicket.

Set to chase 285, Northern bowled out for 217 in the 44th over despite brilliant knocks of Mubasir and Rohail Nazir. Mubasir top-scored with 63, while Rohail scored a valiant 40 but the two could not steer their side to the victory as the rest of the batters made their way back after scoring cheaply.

For SP, Aamer Yamin, Khushdil Shah, and Muhammad Imran bagged two wickets each, while Mohammad Abbas Afridi and Salman made one scalp each.

Pakistan Cup: CP, Sindh, and KPK register second-round wins

KARACHI: Central Punjab (CP), Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) registered wins in the second-round matches of this year’s Pakistan Cup of the ongoing domestic season, here on Friday.

In the fourth match of the ongoing Pakistan Cup, Sindh sealed a consolidating six wickets triumph against Balochistan with 51 balls to spare.

Set to chase 210, Sindh comfortably chased down the total in the 42nd over, thanks to the fifties from Sharjeel Khan and Omair Bin Yousuf.

Sharjeel top-scored with his 73-ball 53, while Omair remained unbeaten for 52. He faced 86 balls and smashed seven boundaries to steer his side over the line.

For Balochistan, Yasir Shah led the way with two wickets, while Asad Shafiq and Khurram Shahzad picked one wicket each.

Batting first, Balochistan could only manage to post a paltry 209/9 in the allotted 50 overs, despite Abdul Wahid Bangalzai’s century.

The side had a poor start to their innings; losing half of their batting line-up for a mere 75. Bangalzai fought back with his gritty knock of 136 but remained a little too defensive as the batter faced a mammoth 203 deliveries, the rest of the batters, on the other hand, failed to contribute significantly to the team’s total.

For Sindh, Shahnawaz Dahani, Abrar Ahmed, and Danish Aziz bagged two wickets each, while Mir Hamza and Mohammad Asghar managed to make one scalp each.

In another second-round match, KPK thumped Southern Punjab (SP) by six wickets and 91 balls to spare.

Despite a poor start, the defending champions comfortably steered to the victory in the 35th over, thanks to the half-centuries from Sahibzada Farhan and Adil Amin.

Farhan scored 50 off 106 balls, top of the order, while Adil remained unbeaten with his 57 and guided his side to the triumph. The right-handed batter faced 111 balls and smashed six boundaries.

For SP, Rahat Ali claimed two wickets, while Salman Ali Agha and Hassan Khan made one scalp each.

Batting first, the SP batting line-up failed completely and could only manage to score 183 before being bowled out in the 42nd over. Sharoon Siraj fought hard with his stunning knock of 53 runs, but he too could not power his side to a commendable total as he received no support from the other end.

For KPK, Khalid Usman picked three wickets, while Kamran Ghulam and Arshad Iqbal bagged two each. Asif Afridi and Sameen Gul, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

In the sixth match, CP defeated Northern by 30 runs in a rain-affected contest.

After being put in to bat first, the CP managed to score 193 in the allotted 25 overs, thanks to Muhammad Akhlaq’s outstanding unbeaten 70-runs knock. The top-order batter faced 86 deliveries and hit eight boundaries including a six in the course of his anchoring innings.

The side’s opener Rizwan Hussain and Ahmed Shehzad also contributed significantly with brilliant knocks of 31 and 34 respectively.

For Northern, Musa Khan claimed two wickets, while Imad Wasim, Salman Irshad, and Mehran Mumtaz struck out a batter each.

Set to chase 194, the home side Northern’s batting line-up failed completely and could only manage to score 163; handing an easy 30-runs victory to the CP.

The top-order left-handed batter Umar Amin resisted a bit with his gritty 34, while the rest of the batters walked back to the pavilion without disturbing the scoreboard much.

For CP, Wahab Riaz shone with four wickets, while Ahmed Bashir and Qasim Akram bagged two each. Usman Qadir and Raza Ali Dar, on the other hand, picked up a wicket apiece.

Faisalabad, Multan, Islamabad to host Pakistan Cup from March 2

LAHORE: Defending Champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) will take on Central Punjab (CP) in the opening match of the Pakistan Cup on March 2 at Iqbal Stadium – Faisalabad, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Saturday. 

The last tournament of domestic season 2021-22 will be played from March 2-31 across three venues, Faisalabad, Islamabad, and Multan. Sindh will meet Southern Punjab (SP) whereas Balochistan and Northern will also play simultaneously on the opening day of the Pakistan Cup.

The event will feature 33 matches on a double league basis. As many as 10 matches from Multan will be live telecasted on PCB’s official Youtube channel. Semi-finals and final will also be telecasted, the decision regarding the right holder will be disclosed closer to the time.

A handsome prize purse of one crore has been set up for the event. The winning team will get 50 lacs whereas runners-up will purse 25 lacs. The best player of the tournament, batter, bowler, and wicket-keeper will get 10 lacs each. Player-of-the-final will receive 35,000 while prize money of 8 lacs will be distributed among the best player in each match.
