‘Target is to win the five-a-side tournament’ Pakistan coach Waqas Sharif

LAHORE: The coach of the National five-a-side Hockey team, Olympian Waqas Sharif has set his target to win the upcoming five-a-side tournament, scheduled in Switzerland next month.

In a video statement, released by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), Waqas claimed to have entered the final phase of the training for the forthcoming five-a-side Hockey tournament and has set his target on winning the championship.

“We have held a training camp for the upcoming tournament and it has entered its final phase. The players are fit and are excited to participate in the event,” Waqas said.

“We are training really hard for the tournament and are expecting fruitful outcomes by winning the title,” he added.

It is apropos to mention here that the five-a-side tournament, is scheduled to kick off on June 04, and the national side will depart for Laussane, Switzerland on June 02.

Pakistan Hockey Team leaves for Indonesia to participate in Asia Cup

LAHORE: Pakistan Hockey Team’s 20-men contingent has left Pakistan for Indonesia to participate in the forthcoming Hockey Asia Cup, starting from May 23. 

Pakistan Men’s National Hockey Team, under the leadership of Umar Bhutta, has left the Allama Iqbal National Airport to travel to Indonesia for the forthcoming tournament.

The national team is accompanied by its manager, Olympian Khuwaja Junaid, head coach Siegfried Aikman, assistant coaches Waseem Ahmed, Sameer Hussain, and Ajmal Khan, and goalkeeping coach Nadeem Lodhi.

Eight teams will compete in the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup, which will be split into two groups and contain 24 matches.

Pakistan will start their campaign by locking horns with the arch-rivals India on May 23 as the two teams are placed in Group A alongside Japan and the hosts Indonesia. Group B, on the other hand, comprises Malaysia, Korea, Oman, and Bangladesh.

PHF announces 10-members squad of five-a-side national team

LAHORE: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) announced the 10-members squad of the national five-a-side team for the upcoming five-a-side tournament, scheduled to be held in Switzerland.

After the conclusion of the training camp, the PHF selected 10 players to travel to Lausanne for the upcoming tournament on the basis of their performances.

The PHF selection committee then announced the 10-members squad after the approval of the PHF President Brigadier (retd) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar.

The Olympian Rehan Butt and Waqas Sharif will serve as the head coach and coach of the side respectively.

It is apropos to mention here that for the tournament, scheduled to kick off on June 04, the national side will depart for Laussane, Switzerland on June 02.

After the conclusion of the training camp comprising 24 players, the PHF selected 20 players to travel to Jakarta for the upcoming Asia Cup on the basis of their performances.

The PHF selection committee then announced the 20-members squad after the approval of PHF President Brigadier (retd) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar.

The forward Umar Bhatta will continue to lead the side, whereas Ali Shan will be acting as the vice-captain. The squad will leave for Jakarta on May 19 for the tournament.

Pakistan Hockey Team’s training camp for Asia Cup commences

LAHORE: Pakistan Hockey Team’s training camp for the upcoming Asia Cup, has been kicked off at National Stadium here on Wednesday.

The training camp comprises 24 players and will be held till May 18 to formally initiate the team’s preparations for the upcoming Hockey Asia Cup.

The national team’s manager Olympian Khuwaja Junaid, Head coach Siegfried Aikman, alongside, assistant coaches Waseem Ahmed, Sameer Hussain, and Ajmal Khan, and goalkeeping coach Nadeem Lodhi are also present at the training camp.

It is worth mentioning here that the Asia Cup 2022 will be played in Jakarta in June this year.

Abdul Sattar Edhi Hockey Stadium to get major renovation

KARACHI: The plan to modernize the Abdul Sattar Edhi International Hockey Stadium has been finalized as Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and the Government of Sindh have awarded the contract for the construction to the Frontier Works Organization (FWO).

According to the details, around 1.5 billion rupees will be spent on the rebuilding of the stadium, which will also include the state-of-the-art indoor gymnasiums and swimming pools.

The boys’ hostel and changing rooms for up to four teams are also part of the renovation plan. Whereas, seats will be installed in the enclosures for the first time.

On this occasion, the administrator of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Mohammad Junaid said that the county will be able to host major events after the up-gradation of the stadium.

“With the efforts of PHF President and Secretary, Sindh Government will now bear all the expenses for the renovation of the stadium,” Junaid said.

“Pakistan will then be able to host major tournaments and events as soon as the stadium completely rebuilds,” he concluded.

PHF calls 24 players for training camp ahead of Asia Cup

LAHORE: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) called 24 players to a training camp to help them strengthen their skills ahead of the Asia Cup in 2022.

The PHF has announced to organize a training camp consisting of 24 players. The National Hockey Camp will be held from May 9 to June 2 at the National Hockey Stadium here.

The players are directed to report to the national team’s manager Olympian Khuwaja Junaid in the afternoon on May 09. Head coach Siegfried Aikman, alongside, assistant coaches Waseem Ahmed, Sameer Hussain, and Ajmal Khan, and goalkeeping coach Nadeem Lodhi will also attend a month-long training camp.

Pakistan Hockey Team concludes Europe Tour, departs from Barcelona

BARCELONA: The 20-members squad of the Pakistan Hockey Team along with the coach Siegfried Aikman departed from here after the completion of the Europe Tour, here on Thursday.

Pakistan, who took on the Netherlands in two matches, Belgium in one, and Spain in two amid the Europe tour have flown back to the country after the conclusion of the tour.

In the last match of the Europe tour, the home side of Spain thrashed the green shirts by 5-3 to avenge the first match defeat in which Pakistan crushed the hosts 4-1.

Pakistan, who started the tour on a high following a thumping 5-3 victory over the Netherlands, could not keep up the momentum as the side lost the second match of the series 4-1.

The green shirts also remained unable to win their only encounter against Belgium, as the latter defeated Pakistan 5-1.

Pakistan thrash Spain 4-1 in the first match of the series

BARCELONA: Pakistan Men’s Hockey Team sealed an astonishing 4-1 victory over the home side of Spain in the first match of the two-match series, here on Tuesday.

Pakistan started the two-match series on a high as the side secured a comprehensive victory over the better-ranked Spain.

The green shirts completely dominated the first half of the match as the side scored three goals, while the home side remained unable to net the ball once.

Rizwan scored the first goal for Pakistan in the first quarter of the game through a short corner. Ijaz Ali then scored the third field goal for Pakistan in the second quarter which resulted in Pakistan taking a three-goal lead over Spain.

The two teams remained involved in a hard-fought second half of the match with both scoring a goal each and the green shirts, in the end, claimed a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Spain. Roman made the fourth strike for the men in green.

It’s worth noting that the two teams will now face off in the second match of the series on May 4.

Pakistan Hockey Team celebrates Eid today in Spain

BARCELONA: Pakistan National Hockey Men’s Team celebrated Eid-ul-Fitar today, who are in Spain for the final leg of their Europe Tour.

The Pakistan hockey team offered Eid prayers at the local mosque here before the team officials, players, and the local community congratulated each other on this auspicious event.

The former Olympian and Manager of Hockey Team Khawaja Junaid, Head Coach Siegfried Aikman, Assistant Coach Wasim Ahmed, along with other support staff also accompany the national side.

It is pertinent to mention here that the national side, which is on Europe Tour, will play a two-match series against the Spanish team on May 3 and 4 respectively. The green shirts also locked horns with the Netherlands and Belgium in the prior stages of the tour.
