Karachi Kings celebrate Tabraiz Shamsi’s birthday ahead of Qalandars clash

KARACHI: Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) most-followed franchise Karachi Kings celebrated their spinner Tabraiz Shamsi’s birthday ahead of their much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars on Sunday.

Ahead of their fourth fixture of this year’s PSL 8, the Kings threw a birthday party for their spin sensation Shamsi, who turned 33 today.

Taking to Twitter, the Kings shared footage of all squad members participating in the spinner’s birthday celebration.

“Happy Birthday, Tabraiz Shamsi!” wrote Kings.

“Wishing you a year filled with more memorable wickets, amazing performances and lots of celebrations,” the caption added.

It is pertinent to mention that the former PSL champions Kings will lock horns with defending champions Qalandars in the much-hyped clash of the PSL 8 today at National Bank Cricket Arena here and will be eyeing to claim their first triumph in the ongoing extravaganza.

Imad vows fightback after unwanted PSL 8 start

KARACHI: Karachi Kings’ captain Imad Wasim expressed optimism to steer his team to the playoffs of the Pakistan Super League season 8 despite an undesired start in the tournament.

“We still have seven matches in our hand before the playoffs,” he said in a post-match media talk after Karachi Kings lost their third consecutive match of the PSL 8 on Saturday.

“Our focus now is to win our upcoming matches and make a comeback. Good teams make comebacks in tough times. We will try our best to qualify for playoffs.”

He revealed Karachi Kings’ desperate search for their first win in the tournament and an optimal team combination, saying once they get on the winning ways, their chances to qualify will automatically improve.

“We have matchwinners in the team, we just have to figure out a combination,” he said.

Earlier, Martin Guptill scripted a phenomenal comeback for the Quetta Gladiators as he made the first century of the PSL 8 to help Quetta Gladiators edge Karachi Kings by six runs.

“We leaked too many runs in the last overs,” said Imad while crediting Guptill for taking the game away from the Karachi Kings.

“We played poor cricket,” he accepted. “We made mistakes which cost us in all three matches. We played well in phases but couldn’t finish it off well,” he said.

When asked whether he was under pressure after consecutive defeats, Karachi Kings’ captain replied in negation and assured that he would not give up till the very last game.

Kings will next face arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars in a blockbuster clash on Sunday at National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi.

Malik’s fifty goes in vain as Gladiators edge Kings in nail-biter

KARACHI: Shoaib Malik played a gritty 71-run knock in the tense run chase but failed short of trumping Martin Guptill’s century as Quetta Gladiators managed to edge Karachi Kings by six runs in a Pakistan Super League (PSL) eight thriller.

Set to chase 169, the Kings fell just six short of glory as they finished at 162/5 despite a valiant 71-run knock by experienced Malik.

The Kings got off to a frustrating start to the run chase as the home side lost three quick wickets inside the powerplay that dented their march to glory early on with James Vince, who appeared solid with also perishing for a 14-ball 22.

Following the early slump, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade and Shoaib Malik anchored the run chase as the duo added 35 runs to the total before Mohammad Hasnain castled the former to break the crucial partnership. Wade could score 15 off 19.

The Kings then dealt with another major blow as Hasnain struck again in the same over and removed Imad Wasim on five.

Meanwhile, Malik carried on his retaliation and was superbly supported by young Irfan Khan Niazi but some tight bowling by Naseem and Hasnain in the 18th and 19th barred the pair from steering their side to glory despite an expensive last over by Odean Smith, who went for 17 runs.

Malik remained the top-scorer for the Kings with 71 off just 49 deliveries and smashed nine boundaries including a six.

Hasnain led the bowling attack for the Gladiators with 2/29 while Naseem, Smith and Qais Ahmed made one scalp each.

Put into bat first, the Gladiators managed to post a decent 168/7 in the allotted 20 overs at the back of a scintillating century by their opener Guptill.

Batting first, the visitors got off to a poor start as Kings captain Imad ran through their top order by picking up three quick wickets including two in the first over.

Gladiators’ captain Sarfaraz Ahmed attempted to script recovery amid his brief partnership with Guptill but failed as he fell victim to Aamer Yamin on the first delivery after the power-play and could score a mere five off 11.

With the side in heaps of trouble at 23/4, Guptill joined hands with in-form Iftikhar Ahmed and anchored the innings with a gritty 69-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Kings’ experienced pacer Mohammad Amir then ceased the budding partnership in the 15th over as he deceived Iftikhar Ahmed with a short-pitch delivery. The right-handed batter scored 32 off 27 deliveries, hitting three boundaries.

Following Iftikhar’s dismissal, Guptill launched a counter-attack on the Kings’ bowlers and powered his side to a competitive total with little to no help from the other end before perishing on the final delivery off Yamin.

Guptill top-scored with 117 off just 67 balls, laced with 12 boundaries and five sixes while Iftikhar (32) remained the only other notable run-getter for the Gladiators.

The rest of the Gladiators’ batters seemed hapless against the Kings’ bowlers as they could not amass the double figures.

Skipper Imad led the bowling attack for the Kings with 3/16, followed by Yamin’s 3/37 while Amir made one scalp.

KARACHI: The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management committee Najam Sethi met injured pacer Shahnawaz Dahani on Saturday and inquired about his health.

Right-arm pacer Dahani, who was poised to represent Multan Sultans in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season eight had an early exit from the extravaganza after sustaining an injury to his right-hand finger.

PCB confirms PSL 8 to continue as planned

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday confirmed that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season eight would continue as scheduled in Karachi despite the KPO attack.

Following a heartwrenching attack on the Karachi police chief’s office on Friday evening, uncertainty surrounded the future of the extravaganza in the largest city.

However, the PCB has confirmed that the ongoing league will continue as per plan as the incident was “an isolated one” and was “unrelated to cricket”.

“The HBL PSL 8 will continue as planned after it has been established and confirmed that Friday’s incident was an isolated one, which was unrelated to cricket. We have been working very closely with all stakeholders, including the local and foreign security experts, who have provided assurances and comfort that the event can proceed as there was no threat to cricket,” said PCB Management Committee Chairman Najam Sethi.

“The PCB takes the safety and security of all those involved in the HBL PSL 8 very seriously. To ensure no stone is left unturned, Presidential-level security has been provided to the teams and officials. These unprecedented arrangements are similar to what were in place for international matches that have been highly praised and appreciated by the visiting teams and officials.

“The PCB remains committed to providing complete safety and security to all the participants and, as always, will continue to work very closely with the security experts and law enforcing agencies to ensure the players and officials are comfortable and being well looked after so that they can enjoy their stay in Pakistan and continue to entertain the fans and followers with their cricketing skills and talent.”

Consequently, the home side Karachi Kings will take on Quetta Gladiators at National Bank Cricket Arena at 7 PM with both sides to field full-strength contingents.

It is pertinent to mention that the National Bank Cricket Arena will host seven more PSL 8 matches till February 26 before the action shifts to Rawalpindi and here.

Rossouw, Usama star as Multan Sultans thrash Peshawar Zalmi

MULTAN: Mohammad Rizwan and Rilee Rossouw struck magnificent half-centuries amid Multan Sultans’ 210/3 before Usama Mir-led bowling attack bundled Peshawar Zalmi on 154 to claim a dominating 56-run victory in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season eight.

Set to chase a mammoth 211, Zalmi bundled out for 154 in the 19th over despite a quickfire half-century by young batter Saim Ayub.

The visitors got off to a flying start with young opener Mohammad Haris charging on Sultans’ bowlers but Ihsanullah dented Zalmi’s march on the first delivery of his spell as he trapped Babar Azam in his legs, who could manage just nine with the bat.

Haris then kept on charging on the bowlers despite an early blow and received equal support from Saim as the pair added brisk 47 runs for 26 deliveries before a mix-up between the wickets brought an end to Haris’ impressive knock.

The wicketkeeper batter scored 40 off just 23 deliveries with the help of a boundary and four sixes.

Zalmi then lost another wicket in quick succession as Usama removed in-form Tom Kohler-Cadmore on just three and forced Zalmi to slip to 95/1 in the 11th over.

Rovman Powell then partnered briefly with Saim as the duo took Zalmi to 130 before Asif Afridi broke the budding partnership by removing the former on 23.

Powell’s dismissal triggered a frustrating collapse with Saim also perishing briefly after amassing his half-century before eventually bundling out on 154 in the 19th over.

Saim remained the top-scorer for the Zalmi with a quickfire 53 off 37 deliveries including three boundaries and as many sixes.

Usama and Ihsanullah led the bowling attack for the Sultans with three wickets each while Abbas had two.

Put into bat first, the home side Sultans took on the hapless Zalmi bowling attack and amassed a mammoth 210/3 in their set of 20 overs at the back of brilliant half-centuries by Rizwan and Rossouw.

The home side had a decent start to their innings as their opening pair of Shan Masood and Rizwan provided a solid foundation for a big total with a gritty 54-run partnership.

Masood, who was struggling to score freely finally perished in the eighth over while attempting to play a lap sweep off Salman Irshad but ended up nicking the ball straight to wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris. He could score 20 off 25 deliveries.

Following Masood’s dismissal, Rizwan partnered strongly with Rossouw and added another vital partnership for his side and scored his second half-century of the ongoing season before falling to Sufiyan Muqeem in the 14th over.

The right-handed batter scored 66 off 42 deliveries, laced with nine boundaries and a six.

Following Rizwan’s dismissal, Rossouw launched an onslaught on Zalmi’s bowlers as he scored a quickfire 75 off just 36 deliveries including 12 boundaries and two sixes.

Following his dismissal in the 19th over, his countrymate David Miller (23) and Kieron Pollard (15) carried the momentum in the final over and sealed 19 runs off it to power Sultans to a mammoth total.

Irshad led the bowling attack for Zalmi with two wickets while Muqeem could pick one.
