Peshawar Zalmi stun leaders Multan Sultans in high-scoring contest

RAWALPINDI: A combined batting and bowling effort led Peshawar Zalmi to a narrow four-run victory over leaders Multan Sultans in the 21st match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Chasing a mammoth 205, the Sultans narrowly missed out on pulling off the highest successful run chase in the ongoing PSL 9 as a six off the final delivery of the innings took them to the 200-run mark.

The leaders got off to a dismal start to the pursuit as they lost their opener Reeza Hendricks (five) in the fifth over with just 45 runs on the board.

They sustained another blow in the eighth over when their skipper Mohammad Rizwan perished while attempting to steal a tight single.

He scored an anchoring 32 off 24 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and a six.

Dawid Malan (19) and Tayyab Tahir (26) put together an anchoring 31-run partnership for the third wicket but both perished in the 12th over, bringing the Sultans down to 91/4 in 12 overs.

Coming out to bat at number six, Iftikhar Ahmed partnered briefly with Khushdil Shah, who managed a mere 11 off 10 deliveries.

Iftikhar then switched gears after his cautious stand with Khushdil and kept the Sultans in the hunt with belligerent hitting.

He was supported well by Chris Jordan, who made 30 not out off just 12 deliveries, but failed to snatch a thrilling victory for his side despite hitting Salman Irshad for a six on the final delivery.

Iftikhar top-scored for the Sultans with an unbeaten 60 off 27 deliveries, peppered with four boundaries and five sixes.

Babar’s decision to bat first paid dividends for the Zalmi as they racked up 204/5 in the allotted 20 overs against Playoffs-bound Sultans.

Zalmi openers Babar and Saim once again gave the former champions a steady start with a blistering partnership.

Their stand yielded 84 runs before Saim perished in the seventh over off Usama Mir.

The left-handed batter fell agonizingly short of his well-deserved half-century, scoring 46 off 22 deliveries, hitting three boundaries and five sixes.

Tom Kohler Cadmore then partnered briefly with Babar for a cautious 13-run stand before falling victim to Mir in the 10th over. He managed just five off nine deliveries.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam stood his ground firm and carried his bat till the 15th over before being cleaned up by Usama Mir after scoring a brilliant half-century.

He remained the top-scorer for Zalmi with a 40-ball 64 which featured seven boundaries and two sixes.

Babar was also involved in an important 51-run partnership for the third wicket with wicketkeeper batter Haseebullah Khan, who made a brisk 31. His 20-ball knock featured three boundaries and a six.

Following Haseebullah’s dismissal in the 17th over, Rovman Powell took the reigns of Zalmi’s batting charge and played an unbeaten 23-run cameo.

He received notable support from Asif Ali (10) and Aamer Jamal, who scored 12 not out off just five deliveries.

Usama Mir led the bowling charge for Multan Sultans with 3/32, followed by Chris Jordan, who bagged two.

Notably, former champions Multan Sultans have booked their place in the PSL 9 playoffs with a victory over Karachi Kings on Sunday.

Mohammad Rizwan-led side are currently at the summit of the standings with 12 points in seven matches. Whereas, Babar Azam’s Peshawar Zalmi are fourth with seven points in as many matches.

Misbah-ul-Haq blames Peshawar Zalmi’s team selection for Islamabad United loss

Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq has blamed the team selection by Peshawar Zalmi as well as tactical decision-making for the loss against Islamabad United during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

Peshawar Zalmi succumbed to a 29-run loss against Islamabad United after they managed only 167 while chasing 197.

Misbah-ul-Haq, during the A-Sports show ‘The Pavilion,’ opened up about the reasons for Peshawar Zalmi’s dismal performance.

“Peshawar Zalmi should blame themselves. They made errors, starting from the team selection,” said the former captain.

“They strengthened their bowling but chose to bowl first after winning the toss. If a team has added two bowlers then they should have batted first,” he further added.

Misbah-ul-Haq also questioned the decision to drop top-order batter Haseebullah Khan and lower-order finisher Asif Ali.

“Dropping Haseebullah was surprising. And they should have played Asif Ali at number six as a proper finisher instead of Paul Walter,” Misbah stated.

For the unversed, Peshawar Zalmi had a horrible start to their chase as they lost both openers in the first over with only one run on the board.

Skipper Babar Azam got run out at the non-striker end, while Saim Ayub was caught in the slip by Salman Ali Agha.

Their batters failed to handle the pressure and soon found themselves slipped to 18-5 inside the power play.

With 179 required off 86 balls and five wickets, Peshawar Zalmi appeared to get bundled out for a paltry total.

However, Aamir Jamal fought back with a one-sided 107-run partnership with Paul Walter, who scored only 29.

Jamal launched a controlled onslaught on Islamabad United bowlers, hitting shots across all sides of the park during his 87-run knock from 49 balls.

He smashed a total of 14 boundaries including six sixes.

However, Shadab Khan broke the partnership by removing Walter and castled Jamal in the next over to seal the deal for his side.

With 45 needed off two overs, Zalmi managed only 15 runs and suffered their third loss in the PSL 9.

Shane Watson lauds Sarfaraz Ahmed’s leadership skills

Shane Watson, the head coach of Quetta Gladiators, praised the leadership qualities of former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed despite losing captaincy ahead of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

Sarfaraz Ahmed led Quetta Gladiators for eight consecutive seasons before he was replaced by Rilee Rossouw for the ongoing season.

However, Shane Watson stated that Sarfaraz is a leader on the field and is supportive of the new captain.

“He’s such a great leader and he leads on the field whether he’s got the C placed beside his name or not. He’s been exceptional,” said Watson while speaking to a local sports channel.

“The support that he gives him (Rilee) has been exceptional. So, it’s a real credit to Sarfraz the ways he’s taken it on and he continues to lead.

“He’s just his natural leader anyway. So even if he doesn’t ever have a C beside his name, he certainly knows how to be able to add the value he needs to.

The former Australian all-rounder also heaped high praise on Saud Shakeel, who has been impressive with his batting at the top order, scoring 164 runs in five games at a strike rate of 150.45.

“Saud is a highly skilled young man, his balance with Jason Roy and his ability to play spin and fast bowling make him a perfect fit for the opening slot.

Meanwhile, Watson appreciated the “exceptional” batting prodigy Khawaja Nafay and termed him a future prospect for Pakistan.

“Khawaja Nafay has exceptional power and bat speed. His skill and power make him a promising prospect for Pakistan cricket.

Wason also shared his experience of coaching Quetta Gladiators and expressed contentment with the way the team has played in the tournament so far.

“It’s an absolute privilege to be the head coach of a team like Quetta Gladiators. I’ve been very happy with the way the guys have played.

“For me, the most important thing about being the head coach was setting up an environment where the players feel that they can be at their very best and they certainly have throughout the whole tournament so far.

“Everyone has put their hand up when the teams needed them.”

Aamir Jamal’s blitz in vain as Shadab Khan-led Islamabad United edge Peshawar Zalmi

RAWALPINDI: Shadab Khan’s all-round performance trumped Aamir Jamal’s batting heroics to help Islamabad United edge past Peshawar Zalmi in the 20th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here on Monday.

While chasing 197, Peshawar Zalmi managed to reach 167-9 in 20 overs, losing by 29 runs.

The visitors had a horrible start to their chase as they lost both openers in the first over with only one run on the board.

Skipper Babar Azam got run out at the non-striker end, while Saim Ayub was caught in the slip by Salman Ali Agha.

Islamabad United bowled tight lines and Peshawar Zami soon found themselves slipped to 18-5 inside the power play.

With 179 required off 86 balls and five wickets, Peshawar Zalmi appeared to get bundled out for a paltry total.

However, Aamir Jamal produced an innings similar to his fighting 82-run knock in the third Test against Australia last month.

Jamal fought back with a one-sided 107-run partnership with Paul Walter, who scored only 29.

Shadab Khan topped the bowling charts with the figures of 3-41. Hunain Shah and Rumman Raees managed two wickets each.

Earlier, Peshawar Zalmi opted to field first and drew first blood as Saim Ayub bowled Alex Hales on the first ball of the innings.

Colin Munro hit Ayub for a six and a four in the next over, but the bowler had the last laugh as he dismissed the batter while attempting for another boundary.

With Islamabad United stranded at 28-2 in three overs, skipper Shadab Khan and Salman Ali Agha joined hands to help the team recover.

They knitted a 65-run partnership for the third wicket in 44 balls to push the team’s total to 90 in 10 overs.

However, Salman Irshad got Agha caught behind in the 11th over to break the partnership and force a comeback for the visitors.

Agha went to the pavilion after a gutsy 37 off 25, which featured four boundaries and two sixes.

Khan was joined by Jordan Cox for another brilliant partnership which accumulated 68 runs in 39 balls, dominated by the captain.

Khan played a blistering innings and hit 10 boundaries including six sixes on his way to a 51-ball 80 before Luke Wood got the prized wicket with 161 runs on the board.

Azam Khan then played an unbeaten cameo of 29 runs from 14 balls with the help of four boundaries and one six to push the team’s total to 196-4 in their allocated 20 overs.

Cox remained unbeaten at 26 off 20, featuring two boundaries and one six.

For Peshawar Zalmi, Saim Ayub led the bowling charts with figures of 2-15, while Wood and Irshad bagged one wicket each.
