Shaheen advised two-week rehab with no signs of injury

LAHORE: Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has been advised two-week rehabilitation after he lost his balance while taking Harry Brook’s catch during Sunday’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 final in Melbourne against England.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday confirmed that the star pacer was not seriously injured but pulled a knee discomfort after he landed awkwardly in the match.

According to the PCB media release, a scan conducted on Monday morning prior to the team’s departure for Pakistan confirmed that there were no signs of an injury and the knee discomfort was likely “due to a forced knee flexion whilst landing”.

“The scans were discussed between PCB’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Najeebullah Soomro, and Australian knee specialist, Dr Peter D’Alessandro, and it was reassuring to know that there was no injury. The left-arm fast bowler is feeling better and is in high spirits.” the statement said.

Moreover, the board said that Shaheen will undergo a rehabilitation and conditioning programme specifically designed to strengthen his knee at the National High Performance Centre (NHPC), few days after his arrival in Pakistan.

The statement added that Shaheen’s return to international cricket will be subject to the successful completion of his rehabilitation programme and the subsequent approval by the medical staff.

T20 World Cup: Shadab, Shaheen feature in ICC Team of the Tournament

DUBAI: Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan and the team’s bowling mainstay Shaheen Shah Afridi has been included in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Team of the Tournament.

According to International Cricket Council, four players from England, two from India and one each from Zimbabwe, South Africa and New Zealand also featured in the select XI, following their sensational performances in the recently concluded T20 World Cup.

Pakistan finished as runner-up in the mega-event after they lost to England in the final on Sunday at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Shadab was selected for the team of the tournament for his brilliance in every department of the game.

“Pakistan’s spin-bowling all-rounder was superb in all facets of the game. In the field he set the standard for this team, and with the bat he scored fast down the order, with his 98 runs coming at a strike rate of 168.96.” ICC stated in a media release.

But it was with the ball where Shadab Khan truly excelled. He took 11 wickets at an average of 15, with his economy rate of 6.34 keeping things tight for Pakistan through the middle overs.”

Shaheen Afridi, who arrived at the megaevent just after recovering from a knee injury, looked out of touch at first, but as the tournament progressed, he showed his dominance to the world and played crucial role in the Green Shirts’ World Cup campaign.

“Fitness concerns saw Shaheen Shah Afridi ease himself into the tournament, and a setback in the final forced him to be unable to bowl his final two overs of the competition in unfortunate circumstances.” ICC media release stated

“But the Pakistan strike bowler stepped up when his team needed him to as the tournament got to its crunch point. His removal of Finn Allen set the tone in a brilliant opening spell against New Zealand in the semi-final, and a trademark inswinger did for Alex Hales in the first over of the final. There is no bowler in the world right now that you’d rather have taking that new ball in a T20 International.” the statement added.

2. Jos Buttler (c/wk) (England)

Shaheen Afridi to join national team before T20 WC: confirms PCB

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has attained complete recovery and will be available for selection in the side’s warm-up matches of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

According to the details, Shaheen will join the national squad in Brisbane as per the schedule on October 15, after undergoing his rehabilitation programme under the supervision of the PCB Medical Advisory Committee at the Crystal Palace Football Club.

As a result, Shaheen will be available for selection for the 17 and 19 October warm-up matches against England and Afghanistan, respectively.

The team management, however, will assess his match fitness prior to his participation in the matches.

Speaking on the occasion, Shaheen expressed his excitement for being able to rejoin the squad after recovering from the injury, while also termed it a challenging period to be miles away from the game.

“I am super excited at the prospects of rejoining the national side for the T20 World Cup and playing my part in our Australia campaign. It has been a difficult period for me to be miles away from the game and the team I love the most, and not be part of some gruelling and exciting matches.

“I have been bowling six to eight overs trouble-free for the past 10 days with full run-up and pace. While I have enjoyed bowling and batting in the nets, nothing can replace the feel of the match environment and I can’t wait to be in that setting.

“It has been a rigorous and challenging rehabilitation programme, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it. To be honest, I am feeling fitter than ever before and can’t wait to wear the playing kit and fire a few thunderbolts.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Shaheen suffered from Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) injury during the first Test against Sri Lanka in July and was advised four to six weeks of rest.

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja opened up regarding the fitness of Pakistan’s ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi and asserted that the latter will be fully fit before the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022.

“I spoke to Shaheen Afridi two days ago. He is making great progress and the doctors sent me his videos.”

“He is at 90 % now and they think that he will be battle-ready [for the world cup],” Ramiz added.

Ramiz then further revealed that the star pacer also eyes to play a few practice matches before the highly-anticipated clash against arch-rivals India.

“Knee injuries are technical and sensitive, so our opinion was until that he isn’t 110 %, so we won’t risk him. But when I spoke to him, he said he is already at 110%,” Ramiz shared.

“He told me that he will go (to Australia) to play the practice matches and be ready for India,” he concluded.

“Your success belongs to Allah, not your mindset,” Shaheen wrote as he shared the clip of his bowling.

It is pertinent to mention that Shaheen is not a part of the Green Shirts’ squad for the home T20I series against England as a result of his knee injury.

‘It will be nightmare for batters’ Jayawardene on Shaheen-Naseem duo

DUBAI: Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has lauded Pakistan’s fierce pace battery, saying that the bowling attack will look much stronger during T20 World Cup 2022 with Shaheen Afridi coming back into the side.

“That Pakistan attack will look much stronger with Shaheen Afridi back as well, and the way Haris Rauf bowled. He bowled quickly,” he said in the latest episode of ICC Review.

Shaheen Afridi is currently on his way to full recovery before the World Cup as he has been undergoing rehabilitation in London after facing a knee injury during the team’s Test tour of Sri Lanka in July. He missed out on Asia Cup 2022 and has also been rested for the T20I home series against England.

Jayawardene stated that he was impressed by the young pacer Naseem Shah for his skills, especially the way he swung the ball with that much speed.

“Naseem has been brilliant, I was really impressed by the way he went about things. The skills, especially bringing the ball back into the right-handers, the way he swung the ball with that kind of pace,” said the former Sri Lankan star.

The fast bowling duo of Naseem and Shaheen, he claimed, would be lethal on Australian pitches and pose a massive threat to many opening batters during the t20 World Cup.

“In Australian conditions, those guys will be a handful. Especially for quite a few opening batsmen, it will be a nightmare if Shaheen and Naseem bowl in tandem from both ends.” he maintained.

Naseem’s emergence in T20I cricket has been credited to his phenomenal run in the Asia Cup in the absence of the team’s main strike bowler Shaheen. He took seven crucial wickets throughout the tournament.

It is apropos to mention that the Green Shirts will start their ICC T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against arch-rivals India on October 23 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
