World Pool Masters: Defending champion Kazakis suffers an early exit

GIBRALTAR: The defending champion of the World Pool Masters Alexander Kazakis has been knocked out of the tournament after suffering a crushing 7-0 defeat by his Filipino counterpart Dennis Orcollo in his first encounter, here on Friday.

The defending champion Kazakis, who came into the tournament on a high, suffered a crushing 7-0 defeat as Orcollo displayed complete dominance over the Greek in a one-sided clash.

The Greek, who had few opportunities due to his opponent’s clinical effort, lost out on some easy opportunities, preventing him from sealing a single frame.

Orcollo, on the other hand, who has now won 14 racks in a row after coming from 4-0 down behind in his afternoon Preliminary Stage match with Eklent Kaçi, secured a comprehensive 7-0 victory over Kazakis to reach the quarter-finals.

The former champion Orcollo will now face the winner of the Last 16 match between Joshua Filler and Skyler Woodward on Sunday.

The newly crowned World Champion Shane Van Boening, on the other hand, also made a shock exit as the American lost his first encounter 6-7 after an exciting battle with Hong Kong’s Lo Ho Sum, who beat the Estonian Dennis Grabe 7-4 in the opening encounter.

It’s worth noting that this is the first time Van Boening has lost his first match at the World Pool Masters in a decade.

RESULTS OF THE LAST 16
Alexander Kazakis 0-7 Dennis Orcollo
Max Lechner 7-2 Dimitri Jungo
Shane Van Boening 6-7 Lo Ho Sum

Shane Van Boening beats Albin Ouschan to win World Pool Championship

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE: The American pool player Shane Van Boening has beaten Albin Ouschan to win the recently concluded World Pool Championship, here on Sunday.

The 38-years-old pool player managed to seal the first world championship and became only the first American to lift the title after his countryman Earl Strickland in 2002.

Van Boening displayed a dominant performance; wrapping up the final with 13-6
to claim his maiden world title. The American cueist left his Australian counterpart Ouschan with very few opportunities.

Ouschan, who was attempting to emulate Earl Strickland and become only the second player in history to defend his title and win it three times, fell short as Van Boening proved unstoppable.

The victory puts Van Boening in a strong position to retain his spot in the Team USA Mosconi Cup, this November 30-3 December in Las Vegas.
