Shubman Gill named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September 2023

DUBAI: Indian opening batter Shubman Gill earned the reward for scintillating performances in the Asia Cup 2023 campaign and ODI series against Australia as he claimed the ICC Player of the Month award for September 2023.

Shubman Gill edged his teammate Mohammed Siraj and England opener Dawid Malan to win the prestigious award for the second time on the back of 480 ODI runs at an average of 80 last month. He previously won the ICC Player of the Month award for January this year.

Gill topped the runs chart in the Asia Cup 2023 with 302 runs in six matches at 75.50. He scored one century against Bangladesh and two half-centuries, including 52-ball 58 against Pakistan in the Super 4 clash.

He continued his brilliant form in the first two matches of the home ODI series against Australia, amassing a total of 178 runs with a fifty and a century.

His impressive run of form also rocketed to the second position in the ICC ODI batting rankings and he is only 5 rating points behind Pakistan’s skipper Babar Azam. Shubman Gill has 830 rating points, while Babar Azam is sitting on top with 835 rating points.

Notably, Gill did not feature in India’s first two games due to an illness and his participation in the high-octane clash against arch-rivals Pakistan is still in the air.

India started their ICC World Cup campaign with a thumping six-wicket victory over Australia, thanks to Virat Kohli and KL Rahul’s anchoring half-centuries.

Meanwhile, in their second match, Jasprit Bumrah returned with figures of 4-39 before Rohit Sharma scored a quickfire century to guide their team to a thumping victory over Afghanistan.

Shubman Gill named ICC Player of the Month for January 2023

DUBAI: India’s young batting sensation Shubman Gill has been awarded ICC Player of the Month for January 2023 after his scintillating form across formats last month.

“Nominated alongside New Zealand’s Devon Conway and fellow countryman Mohammed Siraj, Gill bagged the honours for a brilliant run in white-ball cricket in January,” said ICC on its website.

The right-handed batter smashed a double century last month in the first ODI of the three-game series against New Zealand in Hyderabad. He scored 209 off 149 balls in the nail-biting thriller which India won by 12 runs.

He then went on to score 40 not out and 112 in the other two matches and accumulated 360 runs in the series to become the joint-highest run-scorer in a three-game ODI series alongside Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam, who set this record against West Indies back in 2016.

The 23-year-old also recorded his maiden T20 century in the previous month when he hit an unbeaten 126 to help India clinch the T20 International series against Kiwis with a crushing 168-run victory in the decider.
