‘Credit to scientist who sent him to open’: Former pacer takes a dig at Asif Ali

Former Pakistan pacer Sohail Tanvir has slammed the Lahore Qalandars’ decision to make Asif Ali an opener during their match against Peshawar Zalmi in the 14th match of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10.

Asif, who opened the innings alongside Fakhar Zaman, failed to make an impact, returning with the score of 4 off 6 balls.

Chasing a modest 130, Peshawar Zalmi comfortably reached the target, losing three wickets in the process with 20 balls to spare.

Peshawar Zalmi faced early setbacks while chasing, losing Saim Ayub on the third ball of the first over. Soon after, Tom Kohler-Cadmore fell to an outstanding delivery from Haris Rauf in the next over, leaving Zalmi in a precarious position at seven for two.

However, it was Babar Azam and Hussain Talat who took the game away from the Qalandars with a solid 93-run partnership on the fourth wicket.

While speaking during a post-match analysis show, Tanvir jibed at the decision of Asif Ali’s promotion as an opener who usually bats lower down the order.

“Let me give credit to the scientist who sent Asif Ali to open, ” Sohail Tanvir remarked.

Sohail Tanvir noted Asif Ali’s batting position and emphasized his power-hitting skills.

“You sent Asif Ali to open, who has zero technique. He is not a technically sound batter, but only a power hitter. I personally witnessed his technique in the nets; he just swings his bat,” he observed.

The 40-year-old emphasized the technical aspects of Asif Ali’s batting, stating that Asif had no idea how to play a new ball against a quality fast bowler.

“Tackling the new ball against a quality fast bowler, especially on a pitch where the ball is likely to deviate, requires technical skills. Ali’s dismissal clearly showed that he had no clue that Luke Wood’s delivery would inswing,” Tanvir said.

Sohail Tanvir determined to uplift fans with World Championship of Legends glory

Pakistan Champions all-rounder Sohail Tanvir on Saturday, shared that the team is determined to uplift the fans with the World Championship of Legends final victory over arch-rivals India, scheduled today at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.

Tanvir, in an interview with a local news outlet, shared that all the players in the team are eager to give Pakistan fans something to cheer about after the national men’s team’s disappointing run in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

“We got a great opportunity to combine with all the players we shared dressing room with for years and when you play cricket professionally, then you try to be competitive,” Tanvir said.

“There was a great disappointment for people due to Pakistan’s performance in T20 World Cup 2024, so we talked that the Legends league may not have the same level but people will be happy. We saw the response and got the motivation that people are following this league,” he added.

Sohail Tanvir admitted that the World Championship of Legends is not on the same level as the World Cup but stressed that giving their cricket-loving nation happiness is the team’s source of motivation.

“When we came here, Younis [Khan] bhai, Shahid [Afridi] bhai and all the other players, we talked that people in Pakistan are crazy for cricket, so our goal was to bring happiness to those who were watching us play, I mean it couldn’t be the same as World Cup but it would be something, that was and is our motivation,” Tanvir said.

“Now we have one step left. India vs Pakistan final will always be huge no matter where it is played and which league, people will watch. We won the pool match against them but the final is final. I still haven’t forgotten the final against India in 2007. So, let’s see what happens tomorrow, we will do our best to be on the victorious side,” he concluded.

Misbah, Tanvir propel Asia Lions to edge India Maharajas

DOHA: Misbah-ul-Haq scored a fighting 73-run knock to recover Asia Lions to a reputable total before Sohail Tanvir-led bowling attack powered the side to a narrow nine-run victory over Indian Maharajas in the opening match of the Legend League Cricket Masters.

Opting to bat first, the Lions accumulated 165/6 in their allotted 20 overs at the back of an anchoring half-century by Misbah and Upul Tharanga’s gritty 40.

Earlier, the Lions were off to a poor start against the Maharajas as the side lost two wickets inside three overs for just 18 runs as Tillakaratne Dilshan (5) and Asghar Afghan (1) perished cheaply.

Following the slump, Misbah stitched an anchoring 108-run partnership for the third wicket with Tharanga and put the side into a commanding position before the latter perished in the 15th over.

The wicketkeeper batter scored a cautious 39-ball 40 and hit two sixes.

Misbah then put on another vital partnership for the Lions as he put on a brief 23-run stand with skipper Shahid Afridi, who scored a brisk eight-ball 12 before perishing in the 17th over.

The Maharajas then finally got rid of Misbah in the next over, who top-scored for the Lions with 73 off 50 deliveries, laced up with two boundaries and four sixes.

Parvinder Awana and Stuart Binny bagged two wickets each for the Maharajas while Irfan Pathan and Ashok Dinda made one scalp each.

Set to chase 166, the Maharajas fell nine runs short as the side could accumulate 156/8 despite Gautam Gambhir’s fifty.

The skipper top-scored for his side in the run chase with a 39-ball 54 but received no significant support from the other end and thus the Maharajas eventually fell short.

Besides Gambhir, Murali Vijay (25) and Mohammad Kaif (23) remained the other notable run-getters while the rest failed to deliver in the run chase.

Left-arm pacer Tanvir led the bowling attack for the Lions with 3/27 while skipper Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Thisara Perera, Dilshan and Isuru Udana picked up a wicket each.

Sohail Tanvir calls time on international career

Left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir, known for his unorthodox bowling action, announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket on Monday.

Tanvir, who earned a reputation as a specialist T20 bowler, came to the scene for the first when he was picked by Pakistan for the inaugural edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007. His wrong-footed leap and unique bowling style caught everyone by surprise and troubled the batters greatly playing him for the first time.

He took 54 wickets while representing Pakistan in 57 T20Is between 2007 and 2017. He was also part of the Green Shirts’ T20 World Cup-winning team in 2009.  The left-arm quick also played two Tests and 62 ODIs in which he bagged 5 and 71 wickets respectively.

Calling time on his international career, Tanvir said he would ‘continue to play domestic and franchise cricket’

“I am retiring from all formats of international cricket and will continue to play domestic and franchise cricket going forward. Thank you to @TheRealPCB for giving me the opportunity to play for my country” he tweeted on Monday.

Tanvir remained one of the most sought-after players in the franchise leagues around the world. Representing Rajasthan Royal in the first-ever edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), he remained the leading wicket-taker of the season with 22 wickets.

In Pakistan Super League (PSL), Tanvir played for Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators between 2016 and 2022. He has 55 wickets to his credit in 61 PSL matches.
