IPOH: Japan were crowned the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024 champions as they secured a nerve-testing 4-1 victory over Pakistan in the penalty shoot-out.

Pakistan and Japan, both unbeaten in the tournament, went hard at each other in the final and turned out to be inseparable by the end of the full time as their scores remained tied at 2-2.

Japan started the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024 final on a positive note when Seren Tanaka scored a field goal in the 12th minute.

Their early lead persisted till the conclusion of the first quarter and the entirety of the second despite Pakistan’s several attempts for an equaliser.

Pakistan then finally got the reward for their attacking approach in the third quarter as Ajaz Ahmed struck in the 34th minute.

The Green Shirts then took the lead in an enthralling final as Abdul Rahman in the 37th minute.

Trailing by one goal, Japan scripted a brilliant comeback as Kazumasa Matsumoto netted the equaliser just two minutes into the final quarter.

Both sides then made multiple efforts to score the tie-breaker but the scoreline remained intact at 2-2, forcing the enthralling final to be decided on the penalty shoot-out.

Japan displayed a dominating performance in the penalty shoot-out by converting all four penalties while Pakistan could score one, which came in the third attempt when Ammad Butt successfully buried the ball in the nets.

For the unversed, this was Pakistan’s first appearance in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup final after a long 13-year hiatus.

The national men’s hockey team gave brilliant performances throughout the tournament defeating hosts Malaysia, South Korea and Canada while settling for a stalemate against New Zealand in the group stage.

Pakistan also locked horns with Japan in the round match and held the eventual champions for a 1-1 draw.

IPOH: Pakistan extended their unbeaten run in the ongoing Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024 as they held New Zealand for a 1-1 stalemate in their last group match here on Friday.

Both teams battled hard in the first half but failed to break the deadlock, however, New Zealand’s Luke Holmes earned the advantage for his side with a brilliant field goal in the 35th minute.

The lead did not last long as Pakistan’s Abu Bakr Mahmood scored from a penalty corner to equalize only eight minutes later.

The 1-1 finish ensured Pakistan would march into the final against Japan with an unbeaten streak in the round-robin stage. The final is scheduled for 11 May (tomorrow).

IPOH: Pakistan continued their dominant run as they defeated Canada 5-4, inching further closer to the finals of the ongoing Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024 here on Wednesday.

The undefeated Pakistan side is sitting at the top of the points table with 10 points after four games in the tournament.

Pakistan struggled early on as Canada scored two goals in 17 minutes to take a dominant lead, however, Abu Bakr Mahmood brought Pakistan back into the game with a brace.

Arshad Liaqat, Rana Waheed Ashraf and Ghazanfar Ali followed suit and set up Pakistan’s 5-4 victory. For Canada, Sean Davis scored two, while Harbir Sindhu and Avjot Buttar scored one each.

Notably, Pakistan, as well as Japan, will confirm their place in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024 final if the latter beat Malaysia later today.

Hannan Shahid gave Pakistan an early lead against South Korea, courtesy of a field goal in the third minute before Arshad Liaqat doubled the lead in the 20th minute.

Pakistan’s third goal also came as a field goal, scored by Ghazanfar Ali in the 27th minute while Sufyan Khan converted a penalty corner in the 50th minute to seal a 4-0 victory.

It is worth mentioning that Pakistan had a flying start to their Sultan Azlan Shah Cup campaign with a nerve-testing 5-4 victory over Malaysia on Saturday. They will next face Japan on May 7.

Pakistan earned an early advantage with Hannan Shahid hitting the net with a field goal in the third minute. Meanwhile, Arshad Liaqat further extended Pakistan’s lead in the 20th minute with a brilliant field goal.

Pakistan scored their third goal against South Korea with a field goal by Ghazanfar Ali in the 27th minute, maintaining their attacking momentum.

South Korea made several attempts in the third quarter to reduce the deficit, however, Pakistan’s defence kept them under control.

Meanwhile, Sufyan Khan converted a penalty corner in the 50th minute to seal a 4-0 for Pakistan.

IPOH: Abu Mahmood’s last-minute winner lifted Pakistan to edge host Malaysia 5-4 in a nerve-testing Sultan Azlan Shah Cup fixture on Saturday.

Pakistan had a flying start to the match as they were awarded a penalty corner in the ninth minute which, Sufyan Khan, successfully converted to give his side an early lead.

But Malaysia was quick to respond as Abu Kamal Arzai struck for the home to level the score.

The first quarter ended with the scoreline tied at 1-1 but Malaysia took the lead in the second quarter Arzai scored again.

The third quarter followed the same pattern as Arzai struck again to complete his hat-trick and put Malaysia in control.

Malaysia were in a dominant position at the commencement of the final quarter and it appeared a daunting task for Pakistan to breach their defence but they hit back with back-to-back goals to draw level.

Sufyan and Zikriya Hayat scored in the 50th and 53rd minute respectively.

Malaysia once again took the tide in their favour when Marhan Jalil scored in the 56th minute, just four minutes before the final whistle.

It seemed all over for Pakistan but they pushed hard for the equalizer which came from Sufyan in the 59th minute.

Seconds later, Pakistan was awarded a penalty corner and Abu Mahmood made no mistake to burry it into the nets and steer his side over the line after an enthralling battle against Malaysia.

IPOH: Pakistan hockey team ended their Sultan Azlan Shah Cup campaign on a high note as they held off Japan 5-3 to finish in the top three for the first time after 11 years.

The national side, clinched the bronze medal as they beat Japan in the third-four placing game on Wednesday.

The Green Shirts earned their first medal in the championship after a long hiatus of over a decade. Previously, they claimed the second position and won a silver medal back in 2011.

Kentaro Fukuda scored the opener for Japan in the ninth minute but Pakistan Hanan Shahid neutralized the lead in the next minute with a superb field goal.

Pakistan dominated the opponents in the second quarter as Arbaz Ahmed netted the ball on a penalty corner in the 17th minute before Rooman took the lead to 3-1, four minutes clear of half-time.

After Yuma Nagai cut Pakistan’s advantage to one goal in the 30th minute, Rooman scored his second goal four minutes later to wrestle to take Green Shirts at ease.

In the last quarter, Japan made an excellent comeback as Nagai clawed in with another field goal in the 49th minute before Pakistan’s Abdul Rana sailed his side home.

It is worth mentioning here that Umer-Bhutta led side finished in the fourth position in the round-robin stage of the tournament featuring six teams.

The final of the event will be held today between the hosts Malaysia and Korea on November 10 (Thursday).

IPOH: Pakistan hockey team clinched their first victory in the ongoing six-team Sultan Azlan Shah Cup on Monday as they beat Egypt 4-1 in their last game of the round-robin stage. 

After two defeats and two draws in the first four matches, the Umar Bhutta-led national side has already lost its contention for the title.

Rana Abdul Wahid opened the scoring for the Green Shirts with a penalty stroke in the 12th minute before Muhammad Sufyan Khan doubled the lead in the second quarter on a penalty corner.

Men in Green aggravated their attack in the third quarter as Liaquat Arshad scored a superb field goal in the 38th minute before Sufyan hit the nets for the second time within the next five minutes to steer the side to a dominant 4-0 lead in the game.

For Egypt, Mohamed Ragab scored a consoling goal on a penalty corner in the 50th minute. 

Following their lone win of the tournament, Pakistan finished in fourth after the conclusion of the round-robin stage and will now take on Japan in the 3rd-4th placing match on November 9 (Wednesday).

Meanwhile, Korea will face the hosts Malaysia in the final on November 10 (Thursday).
