Pakistan edge past Ireland to seal consolation victory in T20 World Cup

FLORIDA: A combined bowling effort, followed by Babar Azam’s unbeaten knock led Pakistan to beat Ireland by three wickets in the 36th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here at Central Broward Regional Park on Sunday.

Set to chase 107, Pakistan amassed 111/7 with seven balls to spare.

Pakistan had a shaky start to the pursuit as Saim Ayub and Mohammad Rizwan could add 23 runs amid the first wicket partnership as Mark Adair got rid of the former in the fifth over.

Ayub scored a run-a-ball 17 with the help of two fours and a six.

Rizwan was quick to follow Ayub as he perished in the next over after scoring 17 off 16 deliveries.

Following the back-to-back blows, Fakhar Zaman (5) joined skipper Babar Azam briefly and the two added 13 runs for the third wicket until the left-hander fell prey to Curtis Campher in the ninth over.

Pakistan then lost three more wickets in quick succession and thus slipped to 62/6 in 11 overs.

Babar Azam was then joined by Abbas Afridi when Pakistan needed 45 off 54.

Abbas and Babar batted cautiously and brought Pakistan in touching distance with a crucial 33-run stand that lasted with the former’s dismissal in the 18th over. Abbas scored a gutsy 17 off 21 balls.

Shaheen Shah Afridi then took the game away from a blistering cameo and sealed Pakistan’s consolation with a six. He made an unbeaten 13 off just five balls.

Babar Azam remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with a 34-ball 32 with the help of two boundaries.

Barry McCarthy was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland with three wickets, followed by Curtis Campher, who took two. Whereas, Ben White and Mark Adair made one scalp each.

Sent into bat first, Ireland managed to utilize full 20 overs and registered a decent total on the board, which seemed out of reach after the batting powerplay.

Ireland had a disastrous start to their innings as Pakistan’s new-ball bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Amir ran through their top order with successive strikes, leaving them reeling at 32/5 in six overs.

Right-arm pacer Haris Rauf continued the momentum as he picked up a wicket in his first over to add further to Ireland’s misery.

Ireland were in heaps of trouble being 32/6 in 6.3 overs.

However, Gareth Delany, who came out to bat at No.7, launched an astounding recovery for the European side with a gutsy knock.

He put together a one-sided partnership with Mark Adair. The seventh-wicket stand yielded 44 runs in just five overs before Imad Wasim provided Pakistan a much-needed breakthrough with Delany’s demise.

Delany remained the top-scorer for Ireland with 19-ball 31, which featured one four and three sixes.

Ireland lost two more quick wickets and were consequently slipped to 80/9 in 14 overs.

But their batting tail retaliated against a strong Pakistan bowling attack and batted through the allotted overs.

Josh Little added valuable runs for Ireland at the backend with an unbeaten 22 off 18 deliveries while Ben White scored a 20-ball five.

Imad Wasim and Shaheen Shah Afridi bagged three wickets each for Pakistan, followed by Mohammad Amir with two while Haris Rauf picked one.

It is pertinent to mention that both Pakistan and Ireland are out of the Super 8s race of the T20 World Cup 2024 after the crucial Group A fixture between Ireland and the USA was abandoned without a ball bowled at the same venue on Thursday.

Pakistan’s last T20 World Cup 2024 match likely to be affected by wet outfield

FLORIDA: Former champions Pakistan are scheduled to play their last match in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland but the wet outfield at Central Broward Regional Park may lead to a delayed start of the match.

According to the details, it rained cats and dogs in Lauderhill on Sunday night and the weather remained overcast till the morning.

As a result, the outfield of the Central Broward Regional Park is damped and has many wet patches which may lead to a delayed start or may be abandoned.

For the unversed, Florida’s weather has been far from ideal for the cricket action as the previous two Group A fixtures between India and Canada and Ireland and USA were abandoned without a ball bowled.

The abandonment of the USA-Ireland match marked the end of Pakistan’s journey in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Besides Pakistan, Ireland and Canada were also eliminated from the Super 8s race.

The USA finished the group stage with five points in four matches. Whereas, Pakistan could attain a maximum of four points if they manage to beat Ireland in their last group fixture, scheduled on June 16.

England advance to Super 8s as Australia avoid Scotland scare

SAINT LUCIA: Defending champions England qualified for the Super 8 stage of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 as Australia edged past Scotland in a thrilling clash here at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Scotland, in a must-win clash, failed to defend their 180-run total as Australia chased the target with two balls to spare after losing five wickets.

Australia started the chase cautiously and lost two wickets inside the powerplay with 34 runs on the board.

Mark Watt then bowled a peach of the delivery to rattle Glenn Maxwell’s stumps with 60 runs on board.

Marcus Stoinis joined Travis Head on the crease and together they turned the game on its head. They knitted an 80-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Head top-scored for Australia with a 68-run knock from 49 balls with the help of nine boundaries including four sixes.

Meanwhile, Stoinis struck nine boundaries and two sixes on his way to a 29-ball 59.

However, both batters fell in quick succession, leaving Australia needing 26 runs from the last three overs.

Tim David then played a 14-ball cameo of 24 runs to help his side cross the finishing line with a massive six.

Scotland’s Safyaan Sharif and Mark Watt picked two wickets each.

Sent into bat, Scotland lost the opening batter Michael Jones in the first over, however, George Munsey and McMullen helped their side recover with their belligerent hitting.

Together they added 89 runs in the next eight overs, with McCullen leading the charge, until Glenn Maxwell dismissed Munsey to halt Scotland’s momentum.

Munsey scored 35 runs from 23 deliveries with the help of three sixes and two fours.

McCullen also followed his partner to the pavilion soon after scoring a 34-ball 60, which featured two boundaries and six sixes.

Matthew Cross then played an 18-run cameo, while skipper Richie Berrington held one end to push his side’s total to 180-5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Richie Berrington scored an unbeaten 42 off 31, laced with one boundary and two sixes.

For Australia, Maxwell claimed two wickets while Zampa, Ashton Agar and Nathan Ellis one wicket each.

David Wiese bids farewell to international cricket

Namibia’s star all-rounder David Wiese, who also represented South Africa, has announced retirement from international cricket following his side’s loss against England in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday.

In his last match, the veteran all-rounder bagged one wicket and scored a blistering 27 off 12 deliveries, featuring two boundaries and two sixes. However, he could not get his team across the line as Namibia lost the 10-over clash by 41 runs.

“I mean, [the next] T20 World Cup is still two years away, I’m 39 years old now, so, in terms of international cricket, I don’t know if there’s much left in me,” Wiese said in the post-match press conference.

“Obviously, I [would] still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I’ve still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play.

“But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me personally with Namibia. I’ve had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time.”

Weise started his international career with South Africa during a T20I against Sri Lanka in 2013.

He represented South Africa in white-ball cricket from 2013 to 2016 before making himself unavailable to play county cricket for the English county Sussex.

He was also part of South Africa’s squad in T20 World Cup 2016 in India, where the Proteas were knocked out in the Super 10 stage.

He played 20 T20Is and six ODIs for South Africa, scoring a total of 194 runs and taking 33 wickets across both formats.

Following a five-year break, he returned to international cricket after being selected in Namibia’s squad ahead of their first-ever T20 World Cup campaign in 2021.

The pace-bowling all-rounder played his first game for Namibia against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.

The marquee event, jointly hosted by the UAE and Oman, witnessed the resurgence of Wiese as he led Namibia to their first victory in the tournament against the Netherlands.

He helped his side chase a 165-run target with an unbeaten 66 off 40.

The veteran all-rounder had a brilliant tournament as he finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer with 227 runs from eight games, including an unbeaten 43 in a losing cause against Pakistan. He also picked six wickets.

He remained an integral part of the Namibian side since then, playing nine ODI and 34 T20I matches for the country. He scored 760 runs across two formats and picked 41 wickets.

England crush Namibia in rain-hit clash to boost Super 8s hopes

ANTIGUA: A combined batting and bowling effort led England to a comfortable 41-run victory over Namibia in a must-win ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash here at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Thursday.

Set to chase 126 as per the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, Namibia could manage 84/3 in the allotted 10 overs.

Namibia got off to a shaky start to the daunting total as their openers Nikolaas Davin Michael van Lingen found it hard to score freely against a dominant England bowling attack.

The pair added 44 runs in six overs before Davin decided to retire out after scoring 18 off 16.

David Wiese was promoted to No.3 to accelerate the flow of runs.

The all-rounder took on the attack to the England bowlers with clean hitting. He was supported by Lingen as the pair brought up 36 runs in just three overs before the latter perished.

Michael van Lingen top-scored for Namibia with a cautious 33 off 29 deliveries, hitting one boundary and three sixes.

But, Wiese, who perished on the fourth delivery of the final over was the pick of the batters for Namibia for his blistering 27 off 12 deliveries.

For England, Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer claimed one wicket apiece.

Put into bat first in a crucial match that was eventually reduced to 10-over a side, England registered a massive total on the board, courtesy of a third-wicket partnership between Jonny Bairstow and Brook.

The defending champions, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost both their openers Jos Buttler (0) and Phil Salt (11) inside 2.1 overs with just 13 runs on the board.

Following the early hiccup, Bairstow launched an astounding counterattack by taking Namibia bowlers to the cleaners in a one-sided 56-run partnership with Brook.

Bernard Scholtz provided a much-needed breakthrough to Namibia on the first delivery of the eighth over when he got rid of Bairstow, who scored a quickfire 31 off 18 deliveries with the help of three fours and two sixes.

Harry Brook then switched gears after Bairstow’s dismissal and further bolstered England’s total at the backend. He was supported by Moeen Ali (16) and Liam Livingstone (13), who added quick runs with handy cameos.

Brook top-scored for England with an unbeaten 47 off just 20 deliveries, laced up with six boundaries including two sixes.

For Namibia, Ruben Trumpelmann bagged two wickets while David Wiese and Scholtz could pick up one wicket each.

Imad Wasim takes responsibility of run-chase debacle against India

FLORIDA: Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim took responsibility for the failed run-chase against India in a blockbuster ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash.

Imad, while addressing the pre-match press conference ahead of Pakistan’s last fixture against Ireland, talked about what went wrong for the Green Shirts against fierce rivals.

India set Pakistan to chase 120 on a tricky Nassau County International Cricket Stadium surface. The Green Shirts had a decent start to the pursuit but ended up losing the match by six runs.

Imad Wasim came out to bat when Pakistan were 73/3 in 12.2 overs, needing a further 47 runs off 46 deliveries.

The all-rounder revealed that the plan was to take the run-chase against India deeper but he could not execute the plans properly.

“Our game plan [against India] was to take the chase deep. The wicket was tough to bat on. I let the team down because usually when I go in these situations, I stay very calm and finish the job,” stated Imad.

“Finishing this chase was my job which I couldn’t do, and I am very hurt by that. But this is life, sometimes you make mistakes. I believe my planning was right but the execution wasn’t good,” he added.

He then went on to opine that Pakistan are left way behind the other teams in terms of mindset.

“In my opinion, the reason for our defeat [In the World Cup] was our mindset. We need to take the fear of failure out of our minds and try something new. It is all about mindset, other teams have also changed their thinking, we are behind them because we didn’t change our way of thinking,” he added.

In response to a question regarding the need for major changes in the team, Imad Wasim said it was not his domain but “drastic” changes are required right now.

“It’s not my domain but I think there need to be changes. There should be a drastic change so that we can move forward and fight with world cricket in the way that cricket is played now,” Imad concluded.
