Ross Taylor reveals reason behind Pakistan’s early T20 World Cup exit

New Zealand’s legendary batter Ross Taylor opened up on what led to former champions Pakistan’s group-stage exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Pakistan were knocked out of the ongoing mega event after the all-important fixture between co-host United States of America (USA) and Ireland was washed out in Florida on Friday.

Meanwhile, former New Zealand captain Taylor asserted that Pakistan were favourites alongside India to advance into the Super 8s from Group A but their shock loss at the hands of rookie hosts dented their chances of prevailing.

“But no, that’s, you know, I think. Am I surprised? Obviously, the favourites were Pakistan and they needed to go through. But the USA, you know, I guess after that win against Pakistan, that was always the case. And with the weather around,” stated Taylor.

On the contrary, the USA, playing their first-ever T20 World Cup, qualified for the Super 8 stage of the tournament as they shared points with Ireland due to washout.

The USA finished the group stage with five points in four matches.

The host nation received massive praise from Ross Taylor, who predicted that they have two more upsets up their sleeves.

“For now, for them is to, I guess, have a regroup and, a refresh and bring on the Super Eight because, you know, I think, on that side of the draw, anything can happen, as we saw with South Africa and Nepal,” stated Taylor.

“I’m sure this USA team will feel like they’ve got one or two more upsets up their sleeves,” he added.

The legendary batter then credited USA’s Major League Cricket (MLC) for the team’s success on the global stage and claimed that the league would give exposure to the upcoming local talent.

“America, the USA team, they have taken the letter, they’ve gone out there puffed their chest out and played a great brand of cricket.

“I think MLC starting last year would have given them some confidence in playing against world-class players day in and day out.”

India-Canada T20 World Cup 2024 fixture abandoned due to wet outfield

FLORIDA: The 33rd match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 between India and Canada has been abandoned without a ball bowled due to a wet outfield here at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium.

A heavy rainfall in the morning left several wet patches on the outfield and despite a tireless effort from the ground staff, the field could not be made suitable for the action.

The umpires carried out two inspections and decided to call off the match.

As a result of the abandonment, India and Canada shared a point of each.

The inaugural champions finished the group stage unbeaten with seven points in four matches while the associate nation are now third with three points.

India had already booked their spot in the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup 2024 with a hard-fought victory over the co-host United States of America (USA).

Earlier, a crucial Group A fixture between the co-host United States of America (USA) and Ireland was washed out at the same venue and thus marked the end of Pakistan’s journey in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Trent Boult calls T20 World Cup 2024 ‘his last’

Veteran pacer Trent Boult has confirmed that the T20 World Cup 2024 will be his final appearance for New Zealand in the marquee tournament.

Since his debut in 2011, the left-handed pacer has been a key member of the BlackCaps’ golden generation, participating in multiple finals across all three formats for New Zealand.

One of the best exports of new-ball swing from his country, Trent Boult has picked up 81 wickets in 60 matches in the T20I format at an economy of 7.76. He was NZ’s leading wicket-taker in the 2014 and 2021 editions of T20 World Cups.

“Speaking on behalf of myself, this will be my last T20 World Cup,” stated Boult, following his two for seven in a dead rubber T20 World Cup 2024 fixture against Uganda.

Whether Boult will continue to play for New Zealand in any capacity remains uncertain as he had opted out of a central contract in 2022, choosing to play T20 franchise cricket around the world instead.

Despite the huge win against Uganda and a game left in hand, New Zealand have already been eliminated from the race to Super Eight of T20 World Cup 2024 with Afghanistan and West Indies clinching the two spots from Group C.

The Blackcaps began their campaign with a 84-run loss against Afghanistan. They then lost to co-host the West Indies by 13 runs. This is the first time New Zealand have failed to reach the semi-finals of a white-ball ICC World Cup since 2014.

“I think T20 cricket anything can happen. We’re devastated to not qualify. We’ve been outplayed earlier in the tournament and, we haven’t qualified for good reason so it’s unfortunate but that’s how T20 cricket goes,” Boult said.

Reminiscing his journey, Trent Boult spoke about his friendship with fast bowling partner Tim Southee and the bond they have forged over the years.

“I look at it with very fond memories. We bowled a lot of overs together. I know the partnership very well, and obviously a very good friend on and off the ground. So yeah, nice to wind back the clock a little bit and see a bit of swing bowling at the top. Hopefully, a couple more still to come.”

For a cricketing nation which has had a lot of success and many proud moments in the last decade, the debate on whether this is the ‘end of an era’ had risen leading into the World Cup, one that has been fuelled since their elimination, “It’s a hard one to forecast,” Trent Boult said.

“I think there’s still some tremendous talent inside that dressing room and coming through the ranks in New Zealand cricket. So, we’re a proud nation and I think it will continue to go that way,” he concluded.

New Zealand will end their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on June 17 against PNG at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Trinidad.

Former cricketers react after Pakistan’s T20 World Cup exit

Former champions Pakistan were knocked out of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 after the all-important fixture between co-host USA and Ireland was washed out in Florida yesterday.

The USA, playing their first-ever T20 World Cup, qualified for the Super 8 stage of the tournament as they shared points with Ireland due to washout.

Besides Pakistan, Ireland have also been eliminated from the Super 8s stage.

The USA finished the group stage with five points in four matches. Whereas, Pakistan could attain a maximum of four points if they manage to beat Ireland in their last group fixture, scheduled on June 16.

Pakistan’s early exit from the 20-team tournament shook the world, prompting reactions on social media from cricketers and analysts from across the globe.

The former England captain took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account and shared his opinion on the USA’s qualification as well as Pakistan’s ouster.

“USA through to the Super 8s … Cricket is going to catch on in the States… !! Pakistan are out … at the moment they are a long way off being a good white-ball side,” Vaughan posted.

Meanwhile, the former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq expressed his disappointment over the Green Shirts’ performance.

“It’s very saddening, heartbreaking, and embarrassing to watch Pakistan Team exit from the super 8 of the T20 World Cup tournament. I really believe that we need to put Pakistan first before we take any actions and decisions and we should all reflect on each mistake we made, as individuals and collectively,” Mushtaq posted.

On the other hand, former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer expressed his opinion that Pakistan’s exit from the tournament was due to their own shortcomings, not because of rain in Florida.

“Contrary to popular belief, Pakistan didn’t get knocked out because USA v IRE got rained off. They got knocked out because Pakistan lost to the USA,” Jaffar posted.

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper batter Kamran Akmal stated the fact that the Green Shirts played below par average, resulting in their elimination.

“It is really very disappointing and sad that Pakistan team could not reach to the Super Eight, but it is also a bitter fact that Pakistan team played below the average cricket. Now it’s time to rectify the problems,” Akmal posted.

Hazratullah Zazai replaces injured spinner in Afghanistan squad

Afghanistan have announced top-order batter Hazratullah Zazai as the replacement for injured off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman featured in Afghanistan’s tournament opener against Uganda, however, a recurrence of the index finger injury kept him out of the following games against New Zealand and Papua New Guinea (PNG).

The off-spinner also missed the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to the same injury and is now out of the ongoing tournament after confirmation from the ICC.

The ICC Event Technical Committee approved Afghanistan’s request to replace the off-spinner with Zazai, who was with the squad as a travelling reserve.

Zazai played the last of his 43 T20Is in February against Sri Lanka. He has scored 1138 runs in the format at a strike rate of 133.09.

They are leading Group C standings of the 20-team tournament with six points, closely followed by West Indies, who boasts a similar record but an inferior net run rate.

New Zealand inserted Uganda to bat first and Trent Boult proved the decision right as he picked back-to-back wickets in the first over with one run on the board.

Uganda failed to recover after a disastrous start and kept losing wickets at an alarming rate. They were subsequently bundled out at a paltry total in 18.4 overs.

Kenneth Waiswa was the only batter to amass the double figures as he top-scored for the associate nation with 11. Whereas, Fred Achelam (9) was the only other notable contributor.

Tim Southee spearheaded New Zealand’s bowling attack with the bowling figures of 3-4, while Boult, Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra claimed two wickets each.

This nine-wicket victory was New Zealand’s first victory in the ongoing tournament after being knocked out after two back-to-back losses against Afghanistan and West Indies.
