The incident occurred in the 18th over of New Zealand’s innings when Southee, on his way back to the dressing room, hit a sanitiser dispenser.

According to the ICC, the right-arm pacer has accepted the sanction proposed by David Boon, ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and thus eliminated the need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Alex Wharf, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Michael Gough levelled the charge.

For the unversed, if a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned.

“We can take on any one,” Jonathan Trott after Afghanistan’s Super 8s qualification

TAROUBA: Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott expressed confidence in his team’s ability to excel in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

An all-round performance on Thursday led Afghanistan to thrash Papua New Guinea (PNG) by seven wickets and into the Super 8s stage of the 20-team tournament.

Afghanistan are currently unbeaten in the mega event, emerging victorious in all three of their fixtures thus far.

Meanwhile, their head coach Jonathan Trott highlighted the talent; his team possesses before claiming that the side has not played their best game.

“I believe we’re very, very talented and when we play our best cricket, we can take on anyone. We’ve seen that,” Trott said after Afghanistan’s victory over PNG.

“I feel that we still haven’t played our best game. There’s still things we need to work on and we’ll be working on those over the next few days to give ourselves the best chance to beat the major teams,” he added.

Trott was delighted with Afghanistan’s qualification for the Super 8s but acknowledged that the team has not won anything yet.

“We still have one game left, an important group game, and that’s going to be a good gauge of where we are against a powerful West Indies side who won an incredible game last night (against New Zealand) from the position they were in,” he added.

“So, it’s nice to have won tonight and got qualification as such. To come to a World Cup and win three is a nice feeling, but also the realisation and reality that we haven’t won anything yet.

“We only achieved the group stage and we’ve got some important cricket matches coming up which we’re going to have to play well in.”

It is worth mentioning here that Afghanistan lead Group C standings of the T20 World Cup 2024 with six points in three matches, closely followed by West Indies, who boasts a similar record but an inferior net run rate.

Mark Wood believes Australia “will play hard and fair” against Scotland

England’s right-arm speedster Mark Wood expressed his hope that arch-rivals Australia would play “hard and fair” in their last ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 group-stage fixture against Scotland.

Australia will face Scotland in their last group-stage fixture on Sunday which could decide England’s fate in the T20 World Cup 2024 even if they manage to beat Namibia in their remaining group match.

Scotland are currently second in Group B standings with five points in three matches while England climbed to the third with three points in as many matches.

The defending champions bolstered their net run rate by decimating Oman by eight wickets and 101 balls to spare.

Earlier, Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood hinted at the possibility of exploiting England’s difficulty in the tournament in the post-match press conference.

“In this tournament, you potentially come up against England at some stage again and they’re probably one of the top few teams on their day,” stated Hazlewood.

“We’ve had some real struggles against them in T20 cricket, so if we can get them out of the tournament, that’s in our best interest as well as probably everyone else’s I think.

“It will be interesting to see, never really been in this position before as a team I don’t think.

“Whether we have discussions or not, or we just try and play again the way we played tonight, that will be up to people, not me.”

Reacting to Hazlewood’s comments, Mark Wood insisted that Australia would not deliberately lose to Scotland.

“I’m absolutely confident Australia will play the game the hardest, that’s the Australian way, that they’ll play hard but fair and try and get the win,” said Wood.

“I think that’s part of being England and Australia, isn’t it?” said Wood.

“I think actually I saw it more as a respect thing if I’m honest that he was saying that England have done well against Australia in the recent past and thinks we’re a big threat and a big team so I have no problem with it.”

Michael Jones ready for Australia challenge amid Hazlewood’s comments

Scotland batter Michael Jones has stated that his side is ready to take on Australia in their last group match in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Jones also welcomed comments made by Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood hinting at the ODI World champions manipulating Scotland’s match to knock out arch-rivals England.

Australia have already secured their place in the next round, the Super 8s and Hazlewood suggested that they could ease up in the game against Scotland this weekend.

However, that scenario now appears less likely after England crushed Oman by eight wickets on Thursday to move above Scotland on net run rate with a final game to come against Namibia.

In this case, if England beat Namibia then Scotland will have to overcome Australia to qualify for the Super Eight.

Michael Jones found Hazlewood’s comments hilarious and joked about wanting to see David Warner opening the bowling for Australia.

“I was watching it live actually, laughing to myself,” said Jones.

“The rivalry between England and Australia is massive. If they want to play that way then happy days. We won’t be complaining. If they want to let David Warner open the bowling or something like that it would be pretty funny.”

Jones stated that he thinks that Australia will bring their A-game against Scotland, however, he also mentioned his team’s aim to win and qualify for Super 8s, irrespective of the circumstances.

“The Australians are renowned for being extremely diligent and extremely professional. I’m absolutely certain they will come out all guns blazing like they do for every game at every tournament.

“At the end of the day our team wants the best result we can get, but on a personal level you want to challenge yourself against the best,” he said.

Pat Cummins denies Australia manipulating England’s World Cup exit

Pat Cummins ruled out the prospect of Australia underperforming against Scotland in a bid to oust rivals England from the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, saying it would be against the “spirit of cricket.”

Bowling spearhead Josh Hazlewood caused controversy this week when he said it would be in Australia’s interests for reigning champions England to be out of the competition.

Australia have already secured their place in the next round, the Super 8s and he suggested they could ease up in their closing Group B game against Scotland this weekend to engineer their bitter rivals’ exit.

That scenario now appears less likely after England crushed Oman by eight wickets on Thursday to move above Scotland on net run rate with a final game to come against Namibia.

In this case, if England beat Namibia then Scotland will have to overcome Australia to qualify for the Super Eight.

England coach Matthew Mott — an Australian — said he hoped Hazlewood was joking and Australia’s Test and one-day skipper Cummins assured him that the bowler was.

“When you go out and play you’re trying your best every time. And if you’re not, it’s probably against the spirit of cricket,” Pat Cummins told reporters in St Lucia.

“I don’t think you can (go into a game not trying to win) -– ever. You’re playing an international game in the middle of a World Cup.

“You still want to try and have a good game and carry that on into the Super Eights. I’ve never stepped onto the field without the mindset of being aggressive like the guys have so far.”

Cummins said he had spoken to Hazlewood and the comments were tongue-in-cheek and “got taken a bit out of context.”

“We’ll go out there and try to play Scotland, who have had a really good tournament so far, so it’s going to be tough,” he said.

“It’s something you discuss as one of the quirks of the set-up, but it does it change the way we play? Absolutely not.

“I’ve never stepped into the field without the mindset of trying to take the game on and be aggressive like the guys have so far.”

Chasing a meagre 96-run target, Afghanistan failed to get the desired start as they lost both opening batters in 2.5 overs with 22 runs on the board.

Gulbadin Naib knitted a 33-run partnership with Azmatullah Omarzai (13) to stabilize Afghanistan’s innings but Norman Vanua dismissed the latter to break the momentum.

Mohammad Nabi joined Naib and together they raised an unbeaten 46-run partnership to take their side across the line.
